  3. Web Based Anon Chat Room Audio Streaming

    Date: 11/08/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: browser, web, yahoo

    Anyone know of any web based chat rooms where a user can create a room and play audio to everyone in the room?

    The Hitch is...I'd like it to allow anon or non registered people to join the room.

    For example, Yahoo can do this with Voice Chat, but you have to have a user ID.

    My goal is to have an easily accessible webpage to stream audio with minimal 3rd party requirement. (such as a standalone application or a specific media player) Anything that is built into a browser would be fine.

    Any thoughts? Thanks!

  4. Viewing sites in IE after failing in Firefox

    Date: 11/08/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser, web, microsoft

    (x-posted from '[info]'firefoxusers - someone there suggested the IETab extension, but any other ideas?)

    I've been noticing a problem recently with viewing sites in IE after I view them in Firefox. I use Firefox as my usual web browser, but if a site fails to work properly in Firefox I open up IE to look at it. Unfortunately, a lot of the time, when I try to view the site in IE I just get a blank white browser window. Is this some kind of attempt by Microsoft to f**k with people who use Firefox (which I wouldn't put past them) or a bug in my system? And how can I stop it from happening?

    OS: Windows XP SP2
    Firefox: 1.0.7
    IE: Don't know the formal version number, but the latest version.

    PS: If you can't help, please don't fill up my inbox with exhortations to boycott sites that aren't accessible to Firefox. I know the arguments, but these are sites I need to use.

    There are several rules and guidelines that web developers/designers/admins should follow. I am making a suggestion to add to the list of guidelines..

    142) Web domains are like naming your child. Think of all the possibilities before you decided on a domain name. Could this name be misunderstood? Could your domain name be too long? Please consider the following resources..
    www.expertsexchange.com - The Experts Exchange or Expert Sex Change?
    www.penisland.net - Are you looking for Penis Land or Pen Island?
    www.therapistfinder.com - Therapist... Rapist.. There are pretty similiar professions, right?

    Thanks to the Sun for this article.

    So, folks.. Please be considerate, logical, and creative when choosing your next domain name.

I just want to get this done, and I do not really have a budget to go and buy/licence a solution that should just be out in the wild. Do you all have any ideas?

    I had something lined up, but unfortunately it fell through. I'm working on an open source friendster/myspace clone called Appleseed (more info at appleseed.sourceforge.net).

    I want to set up a test site called appleseedproject.org but I can't afford hosting. Are there any resources for setting up a test site for open source web projects? I'm kind of at a point where local development has stalled and getting the software out in the wild could help out a lot.

  13. joomla help

    Date: 11/09/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, oscommerce, web

    ok. i need some advice. i run a website that is currently JUST a forum (phpbb)...and i'm wanting to add more to the site... so i installed joomla (pretty much the same as mambo).

    i searched the forums, but couldnt find an easy enough to understand answer on this, so i thought i would see if any of you have experience in doing this:

    i guess my "pre-question" is, well... joomla and mambo are almost the same (like how zencart and oscommerce are)... and i'm wondering if i find a bridge for mambo, if i can install it and have it work with joomla?

    my major question is, i want to integrate my ALREADY EXISTING phpbb with my NEW joomla (aka so existing user accounts will carry over from the forum to joomla). how would i go about doing this?

    my current phpb:
    http://www.undergroundchurches.org/forum
    my new joomla:
    http://www.undergroundchurches.org/main

    and example of the two (except this one is using mambo, not joomla) used together:
    http://xsisterhoodx.com

    notice how the accounts are the same for the forum and the main area, and the "latest forum posts" show up on the main page.

    anyone have any ideas?

  15. A system call that should never fail has failed.

    Date: 11/10/05 (C Sharp)    Keywords: html, web

    I'm writing a program that basically is supposed to go to a site that has a mailing list archive on it and download each message from the archive, month by month. I've got all the parsing stuff taken care of to where it's getting the correct links and downloading the correct messages, etc. I've also got it so that it'll download about 6 months of messages. After that, I get a socket exception with the message "A system call that should never fail has failed." Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

    More details
    I'm using the System.Net.WebClient class to get the content of the page. First I get the content of the index page and parse the relevant links out. Here's the index page, I'm grabbing the links that say "date."

    After that, it goes into each month's archive and downloads all of the messages and writes them to a text file(after stripping out the html, etc.)

    If I just do 5-7 months, they work just fine. After that, I get the following error with the following stacktrace:

    Unable to read data from the transport connection: A system call that should never fail has failed. at System.Net.ConnectStream.Read(Byte[] buffer, Int32 offset, Int32 size)
       at System.IO.StreamReader.ReadBuffer()
       at System.IO.StreamReader.ReadToEnd()
       at MListGetter.Form1.getPage(String address) <==this method should download the message
       at MListGetter.Form1.getMsgText(String url)
       at MListGetter.Form1.processMonth(String dateline, String url)
       at MListGetter.Form1.button1_Click(Object sender, EventArgs e)

    Here is the text of the method where the exception is thrown:
    private string getPage(string address)
    {
    	System.Net.WebClient cl =  new System.Net.WebClient();

    	System.IO.Stream s = cl.OpenRead(address);
    	System.IO.StreamReader sr =  new System.IO.StreamReader(s);

    	string res = sr.ReadToEnd();

    	sr.Close();
    	s.Close();
    	cl.Dispose();

    	return res.Replace("\n", "\r\n");
    }

    I would be eternally grateful to anyone who can shed some light on this.

  18. ASP.NET 2.0 MailMessage issues

    Date: 11/11/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: web

    I'm converting a 1.1 webform to 2.0, and I'm having an issue trying to fix an obsolete class. System.Web.Mail has been obseleted so now I have to convert to the System.Net.Mail. I'm having a problem because now for some reason when I try to add the "from" and "to" parts of the email its giving me an error of "Value of type 'String' cannot be converted to 'System.Net.Mail.MailAddress.'" ...ummmm... so would an INTEGER be more appropriate? It also says, "Property 'To' is 'ReadOnly'." ....huh?

    Here's the code:

    Try
    Dim sMailMessage As String
    sMailMessage = fcnSendForm()

    Dim sErrMsg As String = fcnInsertDB()
    If sErrMsg.Trim <> "" Then

    Dim objMM As New MailMessage
    objMM.Subject = "Systems & Facilities Request Form ERROR"
    objMM.Body = sErrMsg & vbCrLf & vbCrLf & vbCrLf & sMailMessage
    objMM.From = "xxxxxxxxx@xxx.com" <----ERROR here type string can't be converted
    objMM.To = sErrorRecipient <------ERROR here property "to" is ReadOnly
    objMM.Priority = MailPriority.High
    SmtpMail.SmtpServer = sSMTPserver
    SmtpMail.Send(objMM)
    End If

    Any help would be greatly appreciated
