How exactly does one go about switching hosts?

I've been on Rydia.net's Domain Account for about a year and I'm interested in switching to DreamHost's Managed Web Hosting, but I'm not entirely sure how.

I have the domain and a whole whack of things on it, not to mention a POP3 account that I use for just about everything. Will I have to download everything onto my computer then upload it onto the new host? What about the POP3? And how do I switch domains?

    Thanks a lot!

    Rock on. <3

  2. I need some help

Date: 06/14/05 (Web Hosts)    Keywords: html, web, hosting

I'm building a website because I'm starting a small online business (I make jewelry and monsters).

    I need good bandwidth.
I need enough space to store lots of photos (or a good, affordable, dependable photo hosting site)
And preferrably some kind of thing to help me make order forms and the ability to have people pay with paypal.
It can't be too expensive, cause I'm poor...That's why I'm starting the business.
I know enough html, so I don't need a ton of programs to help me build the site, though I need to figure out the ordering thing.

Suggestions for good places would be very much appreciated.

  3. Hoping that someone can help me.

    Hi there,

I'm at my wits end and I'm hoping that there is someone who knows more about this than I do who can help me, but, I'm getting ahead of myself.

Two years ago, I started a small business, I plan weddings and sell wedding related items. In August of that year, at the recommendation of another wedding planner, I created a website and had it hosted by Zanuc.com.

My problem is, Zanuc has gone MIA. They said that their sites were being hosted by CMG Web Hosting which doesn't exist. I've been trying to find out what happened to my account (that is paid in full through August of this year)

I wasn't so upset, becasue the site was still running, but, this week, it has gone missing. I spoke to the Assoc. Director at Peak-10 which is the company that hosts the servers for Zanuc and he had no idea that Zanuc had done this to their customers. According to him, the machines he hosts for Zanuc are running fine.

Any ideas what I can do?

    Thanks.Gail

I've been approached to design and maintain the official website for a small band. I've never made a professional website for anyone before, so I didn't even think about charging or anything when I made the original offer, but I know that it would be quite a bit of work so now I'm not sure how much I should be asking for in terms of payment. I'm thinking a lump sum for design and setup, then a flat monthly rate for maintenance. I've been told that general montly rates usually go around $60 US, is that a fair price? But I'm not at all sure how much to charge for the lump sum, especially since I'm not sure what the design and content will include. Can you give me some estimates?

  5. Suggestions?

Date: 04/23/05 (Web Hosts)    Keywords: php, mysql, sql, web, hosting

I manage two domains, each under 10MB. For the past two years, they've been hosted with dr2.net, but then service got spotty and then they merged with Mesopia and the reviews got worse.

So, I'm looking to switch both domains to a new shared host. After checking out webhostingjury.com, I like the features of the standard plan of u-hs.com but the price seems a tad too steep. Looking for something in the area of $10 to $25 a year. One of the domains I expect to migrate to PHP and MySQL in the next few months.

    Suggestions?

  6. free calendar app that doesn't suck?

Date: 01/13/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: html, sql, java, web, yahoo, google

i'd like to add a calendar to my site. it doesn't need to be editable by visitors to the page, only by me.. but it does need to have functionality that would allow visitors to flip through different months and see what days i'm available. ideally it could also be colorcoded based on different categories (completely available, someone has requested me but nothing is confirmed, not at all available.)

i have come to ask the experts if you know a useful app for this purpose. i'm definitely not a true webdev person... i only know basic html and a little sql/javascript/etc. i googled, but most of the results were for calendars which remain on the site of the calendar's creator (e.g. calendar.yahoo.com) vs. ones which could integrate into my own site's design.

(to give you an idea of my preferences, some of my favorite web-based tools are flickr, allconsuming.net (and 43 things), dodgeball, yelp, etc.)

any advice would be greatly appreciated =]

  7. bookmark management help!

Date: 12/29/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, browser, web, google

I would like to automatically update my homepage with a list of bookmarks that I find while I surf the net. It should be as simple as clicking a button on my browser such as "Link This!" whenever I find a webpage I like. And a window like this appears for me to add information:

Categories can be added and customized.

The link that is added will be automatically reflected on a webpage.

Does anyone know how this is accomplished? Or what should I google for more information? Is this PHP?

Many thanx for any help! :)

    Edit: Problem solved! Thank you!

Lo there everone, I done a website.

    http://www.superstringdesigns.co.uk

Only problem is that it looks perfect in Internet Explorer but just plain bad in Firefox. Does anyone with experience in these matters have any ideas why? I know it's my fault because IE is worse than Firefox in all respects so I've done something wrong somewhere, but I've fiddled and jiggled away and I still can't get the content div to cover all the... err... content in Firefox.

Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope!

    Edit: All fixed now.

  9. the web hosting question...

Date: 12/14/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, mysql, database, sql, web, apache

I was wondering if anyone could recommend me a webhost that will meet the following requirements:

+ I want as much control as possible. If I decide one week I want to mess around with OracleDB, I want to be able to install it. If I want to use Ruby on Rails, I want to be able to install that too. I basically want to be able to do as much server administration as possible

+ I have the following musts: PHP 5, Apache, MySQL(preferred, but some kind of database)

+ I need a decent amount of space and bandwidth, but not a whole lot.

I have considered a dedicated server, but it seems to be far too expensive for now at least. Any ideas?

  10. PHP + MySQL 4.1

Date: 01/20/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, mysql, database, sql, web, apache

    FIXED. Thanks to '[info]'afromann, '[info]'cowsandmilk, and '[info]'nentwined!

I've been looking around since yesterday and just can't seem to find a definitive answer -- how exactly do you use MySQL 4.1.x with PHP 4.x?

Needing some of the functionality available in MySQL 4.1 (and since our host has that as well), I installed it, updated my phpMyAdmin settings, and came across "Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client" message. So I went looking for a fix for that. It told me I had to use the mysqli extension for PHP, but since I installed PHP using the installer (I am on a Windows machine, with Apache), I uninstalled PHP, downloaded the binary zip... but can't find the mysqli extension in the extensions folder in the zip.

So now I am in a quandary. The mysqli extension is not in the binary zip; is it only for PHP5? But the host we're on has MySQL 4.1.x AND PHP 4.x! The manual says something about compiling PHP with support for the mysqli extension -- do I have to recompile PHP4, is that it?

Help, advice, suggestions, etc would be very much appreciated, thanks.

    Windows XP Pro
Apache 1.3 (I'm using Apache 2.0 on ANOTHER machine)
    MySQL 4.1.16
PHP... well, none as of the moment, but I was using PHP 4.3.x; I'm trying to install 4.4.2

(Ask if there's anything else needed.)

Update: I thought it would be good to post an update since the update might be significant and people don't always check other comments. :)

Actually, I just got phpMyAdmin working -- not exactly sure what happened there, as the only thing I did was create another mysql user with access to all the databases and use that for phpMyAdmin. I thought my problem was fixed but now I'm trying to log into the webapp I'm working on, to no avail -- the script just plain dies (no warnings, errors, messages, nothing) when I call mysqli_connect( host, user, pw, database). Echoing before and after that line--

    echo 'before call';
    $link = mysqli_connect( host, user, pw, database ) or die( 'Error: ' . mysqli_connect_error() );
    echo 'after call';

The ONLY output is "before call". NONE of the code after the connect gets run, and obviously the die() didn't work either (or didn't output anything within the parentheses, anyway). Hence I'm a little confused why phpMyAdmin is working (without recompiling php, and without the extension dll either since I can't find it) but my script can't. I'm assuming it's BECAUSE I haven't recompiled PHP, so... yeah.

Fix: I'm not sure why phpMyAdmin can connect using php4 without having to use MySQL's old password hashing algorithm for its user, but it's probably just amazing that way. Used the OLD_PASSWORD() function to change the password for my script's user, and now it's working fine again with the ordinary mysql_* calls. :)

  11. ...but I'm NOT connecting to SQL Server 2005...

Date: 01/19/06 (SQL Server)    Keywords: database, asp, sql, web, microsoft

Okay, here's one for you. Not sure whether I should be posting here or in '[info]'csharp; figured I'd try here first.

Trying to set up a SqlConnection in C#.NET (2005 Express Edition). When I test the connection, I get the following error:

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings, SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)

All well and good... except the machine to which I'm trying to connect is running SQL Server 2000, not 2005.

There is no connection string as of yet-- it's simply trying to locate the database and access the data (which, I should add, I can do just fine with Enterprise Manager, Query Analyzer, etc.). All I have right now is an "Add Connection" dialog box that has the DSP (Microsoft Sql Server Database File (SqlClient)) and the physical path to the database file (\\edison\c$\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Data\Hospital Rates_Data.MDF). I hit "test connection," and up comes the error.

I am aware of this article at support.microsoft.com. SQL Server 2000 was installed on this machine at least a year before 2005 was released, so that's not the problem (at least, not as they explain it here).Still, I attempted the workaround, and the user they specify does not exist, so I assume that 2005 was never installed on that machine. I've found no help through a websearch; is there no one that doesn't ask questions specifically related to ASP.NET? Sheesh.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd be grateful. Thanks.

  14. Javascript blues

    Hey all,

I'm no Javascript aficionado, and I'm working on a web site that I didn't create. I've never had a problem with these menus before, and I code by hand, using HTML-kit... someone else had to work on this page and I have a sneaking suspicion they pulled it into Frontpage or VBstudio or something, because the formatting got all retarded (stripped quotes, weird tabs, extra returns) and now then Javascript menus don't work. I went through the file and put as many things back in place as I could stand, but it doesn't really seem to be fixing the problem. I didn't notice any other major differences, and I'm not really well read in Javascript - so I can't really debug like an expert. That's where you guys come in. Can you help?

The menus on this page (or without a video selected if you prefer) don't work - meaning when you float over the top navbar, there are supposed to be menus that drop down (well, appear) and they don't. The right way looks like this.

The code for the broken one looks like this:

Any suggestions would be absolutely adored!

I'm designing a non-profit website and got inspired by the work of Piet Mondrian. I was curious on what the best way to go about creating something similar to the linked picture. I want to make various sized squares of different colors as the header of my webpage. Some of the squares will be links where the color changes when the mouse hovers over it. I'm looking for a way to do this with HTML and/or CSS. My first thought is a series of one cell tables with different background colors. However, this seems bulky with a lot of repetition. Anyone else have any ideas?

Date: 01/23/06 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: html, asp, java, web

So basically I've been assigned to write up a training sign-up web app for my company, and basically when we were working on it some static HTML versions were written up just for show and not for actual functionality. Thing is though that now I gotta use the exact same site design but now give it ASP.Net functionality. I know this sounds easy but I gotta deal with a site built with ALOT of Dreamweaver added code like non-editable tags (great goddamn idea that was,) and image swapping javascript. I don't want to have to rebuild this entire site from scratch, but I also don't want ot go and CONSTANTLY be making stupid design revisions to get it to look like the original page. Any ideas about this? Or is this really not as hard as it sounds?
