Does this exist?
Date: 05/10/06
(HTML Help) Keywords: html, web, linux
I'm looking for a Web page that can translate normal text into displayed HTML code, but I'm not sure if such a site exists.
For example, some sort of page where I could input the following block of text (noting the bold, italics, and paragraphs):
Condoleezza Rice's abrupt dismissal of a letter from Iran's president might only strengthen hardline attitudes and mistrust of America, some Iranians warned Tuesday.
As President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad began a high-profile visit to a key Muslim country, Indonesia, a former top Iranian official said Rice's response will give new justification to those who oppose ties with the U.S.
Iran's former ambassador to France, Sadeq Kharrazi, said the letter -- the first from an Iranian head of state to an American president in 27 years -- "could have been a turning point in relations."
... and have it spit out:<p><b>Condoleezza Rice</b>'s abrupt dismissal of a letter from Iran's president might only strengthen hardline attitudes and mistrust of America, some Iranians warned Tuesday.</p><p>As President <b>Mahmoud Ahmadinejad</b> began a high-profile visit to a key Muslim country, Indonesia, a former top Iranian official said Rice's response will give new justification to those who oppose ties with the U.S.<p><p>Iran's former ambassador to France, <i>Sadeq Kharrazi</i>, said the letter -- the first from an Iranian head of state to an American president in 27 years -- "could have been a turning point in relations."</p>
... which could then be easily copied and pasted.
All it would be required to do is simple HTML -- bold, italics, links, lists, and paragraphs -- although if it comes down to it, only paragraphs are truly necessary. Essentially, programs like Frontpage do this if you work in the WYSIWYG editor and then immediately view the code, but a Web-based system would be easier for what I'm trying to do.
Does anyone here know of such a site? (Or, alternatively, a free program that could be run on a Linux machine to do the same thing.) Thank you for any help!

VB.Net used to add files to SQL Server
Date: 05/09/06
(Asp Dot Net) Keywords: database, asp, sql, web
Christ I post so much to this group that its like if I keep doing it I'm automatically entered in a raffle..
Anyways I have a ASP.Net/VB.net webform that allows a user to upload a file into a SQL Server database. I can't figure out how to get the file to be inserted correctly though. We have to use a data access class, but I can modify it to my needs. I also need to pass this to a stored procedure on the database, as opposed to using commands in the vb code.
This is how I get the file:
Dim strFileName As String = _
fileupload1.PostedFile.FileName.Substring _
(fileupload1.PostedFile.FileName.LastIndexOf("\") + 1)
Dim fileLength As Integer = CInt(fileupload1.PostedFile.ContentLength)
Dim fileContent(fileLength) As Byte
fileupload1.PostedFile.InputStream.Read(fileContent, 0, fileLength)
I keep getting all sort of casting errors and other crap when I try and pass this through my stored procedure. I don't think my error lies in there, because it looks like its not being "converted" to the proper format or it just isn't going over properly. I can't seem to find any tangible "good" info online about this. Can anyone help out? Thanks.

Ammo?

Candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong organizational skills are required. Military or civilian agency experience desired. Ammunition and PEO Ammo experience is preferred.
I saw the above in an ad for a web designer at a major telecom company. Is ammunition software or a server type or something related to web development? I've never heard of it personally and find it extremely odd they'd need someone with actual ammunition experience.

hit counters
Date: 05/14/06
(WebDesign) Keywords: php, web
I want to put hit counters on my pages and I've found a lot of websites that offer free counters but I'll admit I'm being rather picky about the image of the counter. I just don't like the counters offered and a lot of websites seem to offer the same images for their counters.
This site: http://hellocounter.com/index.php lets you provide your own images but when I try to use their service it doesn't let me select the picture I uploaded.
Anyone know of another website that offers hit counters while letting you provide your own image, or know the code to make your own hit counter?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

How To Enable window.status in Firefox

Strangely you cannot set browser window status bar using javascript (by setting window.status) in Firefox. There are two simple ways you can enable it.
Open about:config in browser and search for dom. disable_window_status_change. Change it to false.
Additionally in Firefox v1.0, this can be changed via “Tools → Options → Web Features → Enable JavaScript / Advanced [...]

Hello everyone! I'm new to this community. I love website designing and have been designing sites for about nine years now. I am completely self-taught in my website design and really love doing it. As a result I am highly considering turning my love for design into a career. I am currently in college and and very unsure where to start. I was wondering if anyone can just give me a feel of what I should be going into to or any advise of what to take or not take. I want to learn a lot more about design and how to use things like Java, Flash, and improve the knowledge I already have so I can not only make my personal site better but use it in my possible career. I was also wonder how the job market for a website designer is and what the work is like. And, finally, if anyone wants to check out my personal site you can visit it here and please tell me what you think. Thank you!

Webloc/url conversion
Date: 05/15/06
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: web, google
Okay, I tried Google, and other lj communities, now I'm hoping you can help me.
I was living a roommate who had a Mac. (OS X G5?). I had many, many files stored on it. The roomie moved out, and eventually put all those files onto a DVD disk. Now I have a PC. I was able to successfully transfer most of the data (images, iTunes, text, etc,) onto my computer.
BUT...
All the internet links I had saved on the Mac are weblocs, and I can't open them on my pc. I tried to find ways to convert them, but all the info I found was for people who had Macs, and wanted to work offline, and much of the "help" was in technospeak, and I was lost. :/
Is there a way to exract the url's from the weblocs, without using a Mac? (I no longer have access to one!) Thank-you in advance!

How To Use SAJAX (AJAX Framework) from HTML

Sajax is an useful ajax framework to simplify ajax based development for languages like PHP, Ruby etc. Not many realize Sajax can be used equally well from plain old html pages (as in .html or .htm). Export GridView to Excel
Date: 05/16/06
(Asp Dot Net) Keywords: html, asp, web
Hey gang, I've got an odd Internet Explorer/MS Excel behavior that I need to figure out and fix.
My xls.aspx.cs:
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
GridView grdExcel = (GridView)grdReport;
Response.Clear();
Response.Buffer = true;
Response.AddHeader("content-disposition"
, "attachment;filename=rpt.xls");
Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCache
ability.NoCache);
Response.ContentType = "application/vnd.ms-excel";
Response.Charset = "";
this.EnableViewState = false;
System.IO.StringWriter oStringWriter = new System.IO.StringWriter();
System.Web.UI.HtmlTextWriter oHtmlTextWriter = new System.Web.UI.HtmlTextWriter(oStringWriter);
Response.Write("");
//this.ClearControls(grdExcel);
grdExcel.RenderControl(oHtmlTextWriter);
Response.Write(oStringWriter.ToString());
Response.End();
}
public override void
VerifyRenderingInServerForm(Control control)
{
return;
}
Common code example from all over the net.
What happens: When clicking on my link to download the excel doc, I am finding that "Open" in IE does not work. I can save the document to my local drive and then open, but when I try to click the link and select "Open" it tells me:
"'C:\Documents and Settings\user\local settings\temp net files\content.IE5\0L6RCHUN\rpt[n].xls' could not be found. Check the spelling of the file name, and verify that the file location is correct.
If you are trying to open the file from your list of most recently used files on the File menu, make sure the file has not been renamed, moved, or deleted." (note: file path location isn't exact. just giving general idea of temp location)
But, if I click ok on that excel window error, and then return to the IE window and click on the link once more (now MS Excel is open).... My excel document opens properly.
I'm using:
MS Excel 2003 (11.5612.5606)
IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519
Windows XP Pro ver. 2002 SP 2
.NET 2.0/C#
(FYI: Works beautiful in Firefox.)
Anyone experience anything similar?
UPDATE: If I set Caching to private, it works. (Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.Private);)

looking for a good, free GUI mysql client for windows
Date: 05/16/06
(MySQL Communtiy) Keywords: php, mysql, browser, database, sql, web
I'm currently working on re-engineering a web stack completely to use mysql as a back end instead of (shiver) a bunch of Access files. I've used mysql for years both personally and professionally, but being a UNIX dork I've almost exclusively done so from the command line. Whenever I've needed something a little more user-friendly than that, I've installed a web tool like phpmyadmin.
However in this case, I'm working in an all-Windows shop (mostly server 2003) and I know that I'm going to be passing this on to someone in a couple years. As I document various tasks, I'd like to use a desktop client with a GUI interface for doing things like "browsing" the database, modifying stuff now and then, etc.
I see that mysql.com has a nice "administrator" and "query browser" available and they're pretty nice - but neither is really what I'm looking for in terms of something that has a GUI interface and actually manipulates the data itself. Unfortunately I cannot count on a successor knowing much SQL or being comfortable on the command line.
I'm guessing there are many free tools out there but would love to start out on whatever people who already love to use such things find the most mature, featureful, easy to use, etc. So, any suggestions? TIA!
EDIT - solved, thanks!

Site critique
Date: 05/17/06
(WebDesign) Keywords: web
I would love to get some general feedback on my portfolio website as well as help on a specific page. http://www.akiree.com
I am a very amateur web designer/builder - as in I just build sites for my stuff and must use a design program. I built this site using a combo of dreamweaver 4 and 8 (updated in the middle) I am personally thrilled with it, it "looks" like I wanted it to. But I am sure that there is some coding stuff that could be fixed, changed etc. I am up for any constructive criticism although bear in mind there are many thing I just don't know how to do.
The advice I would like is on my resume page. http://akiree.com/pages/Resume.mht As saved from word, it is a mht file. This makes it not viewable or alterable in Dreamweaver and apparently not viewable in firefox or I think mozilla. I use IE and so can see it fine. What can I do about this? I want to have something alterable through Dreamweaver so that I can add a "PDF version" button. Which will then raise a whole other set of questions about making PDF's but I'll do that later.... Should I just type everthing into Dreamweaver and if so how do I keep the formatting?
Third question - I am considering adding a background to the whole shebang, a nice woodgrain something so that it looks like the book is on a table. Does there happen to be a place I could find something like that or will I have to work on making my own. (Semi proficient in photoshop)
Edit: The site is not truly finished - the "everything else" link goes to a section of the site that has not been uploaded.
Thank you for all your help
Akiree

a good hosting service
Date: 05/18/06
(WebDesign) Keywords: asp, web, hosting
So I have a question -- can you guys recommend to me a good Web host service and/or domain name registration service? I've been designing for awhile but I've never had my own domain, so I'm (somewhat) clueless as to what makes a good service and a good price. Right now, I'm looking Shieldhost.com to host the site and at IPower to register the domain.
I like the aspect of the free domain for life with Shieldhost's Webplus Year-long purchase, but I wonder if it is worth spending $20 extra for 3 GB of space and 50 GB bandwidth (over their beginner level). How many hits (give or take) is 100 GB bandwidth per month?
Also, a couple old imacs have come into my possession, and I was debating just hosting the Web site off my own ISP ... though I am wary about this idea because I do not know how reliable they are, and I'm also aware that my upload times are much, much slower than download times. Has anyone had a good/bad experience hosting their own Web site?
The site will be a portfolio site, so I don't anticipate high volumes of traffic but I do plan to post larger files on the site. Any advice you could give me is very much appreciated :).

Adding random quotes to lj
Date: 05/18/06
(HTML Help) Keywords: html, web
This website provides an HTML code so you can add random quotes to your website/LJ. For some reason, when I paste the HTML code into my entry box on the Update Journal page, the entry box does not have a quote inside (the box is blank). However, the HTML code works on the website because the preview box has a quote inside.
Does anyone know how to fix this HTML code so I can paste it into one of my LJ entries and have random quotes appear? Any help would be great.
Thank you! :)
EDIT: I tried the website that antisora commented with below but my entry still ended up blank. Here is my code:
