  2. skip networking in windows, worth it or no?

Date: 05/18/06 (MySQL Communtiy)    Keywords: mysql, browser, sql, web

Hey folks, another newbie-to-mysql-on-windows question here, and many thanks again to the help on my previous one...

In my previous mysql experience on unix-like platforms, it was generally considered a Good Thing to turn off networking if you didn't "need" it, just talking directly to the mysqld instead. In cases where a local web stack on the same box was all that ever needed to talk to mysql, this worked well, and unless I'm smoking crack, it even seemed to perform a little better than chatting on 3306 using TCP/IP and worrying about telling either the daemon or the firewall (or both) to restrict such conversations to localhost.

Somewhat naively, I tried to do this in Windows today and got some unexpected results.

I'm working with an old version of coldfusion and modern mysql and recently discovered that rather than the "use an old version of Connector J" method mentioned in the Macromedia knowledge base, I can just install the nice current version of the mysql ODBC Connector, then set up a system DSN right in Windows. I tell coldfusion to use this "ODBC socket" and poof, things seem pretty quick. So great, I think, now that I'm not using the old Connector J which seemed to require a TCP/IP method, now I should be able to skip networking in the mysql daemon and just tell the system DSN config where the "socket" is.

Not so simple! I turned off networking (using mysql Administrator, since I'm trying to "be GUI" about this) and as expected, it uncommented "skip networking" in the my.ini file. However, after this, Windows couldn't start the mysql service anymore. Furthermore, the Administrator and Query Browser didn't seem to be able to connect without a port number. As soon as I re-enabled networking by editing the my.ini file, everything was fine.

Did I miss something? Am I smoking crack? Should I just leave well enough alone and use networking with mysql configured to only allow connections from localhost and Windows told not to expose 3306 to the outside world?

All opinions welcome - just please don't suggest "use something other than crutsy old cold fusion" because unfortunately that's not really an option. TIA!

A pal recommended DotEasy for my webhost and I'm happy with their service but I just got the following info from them because it's time to renew. Almost another $100/yr for spam/virus protection? Also, can I do better than 100MB for storage? Thanks for the advice. This community is most helpful!

    - Unlimited Hosting: $119.40 / 12 Month(s)
    - Free 100MB Storage Upgrade (option will auto renew)
    - Spam & Email Virus Protection: US$41.70 / 6 Month(s)

TOTAL : US$161.10 (plus another $41.70 for the full 12 months of spam/virus protection) so $202.80

  4. trouble with thunderbird configuration out of school....

Date: 05/19/06 (Mozilla)    Keywords: virus, web

all right, i seem to have this issue whenever i come home from my college, and i've just never had the time to try to deal with it until now, since i'm here at home through the summer.

when i'm up at my school, thunderbird works and functions properly. but when i come home (we only have dial-up access here currently) i can't get thunderbird to access my main email (my school email). when i used outlook express (prior to thunderbird, before OE disappeared from my computer), all i had to do was change the outgoing server address to our server here at home and that would be it. but that doesn't seem to work for thunderbird, and i'm getting fed up with this, because the webmail base program that my salem (my school) offers, does not offer virus scanning through it since it's an internet program.

any help that any of you could give me would be GREATLY appreciated. thanks.....

  5. Putting an email sender on my page

Date: 05/19/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: html, asp, web, spam

    Hey guys,

I'm looking for your advice and help on an email related question. Specifically, I want to create a system that allows visitors to my website to send email messages to third parties using their own email address with one-click. I heard that this is a questionable practice, used by spammers, no less--but I've seen it used also on a lot of legitimate websites, which usually encourage you to fill in your name and emaill address and click to send a prewritten text to a government official. Case in point: http://www.transalt.org/e-bulletin/2006/May/0518.html#parks

That is one site among many that implement this stuff. I guess what I'm trying to find out is how do they do it? You'd have to rig up the protocols of the email server to accept sending email to third parties, right? I have no problem setting up the form itself, but am confused about these two things: 1) how to rig up an email server to send email from a different email account (and not just one time only!) and 2) how to relay the information a visitor types from the website to the email server. (I guess I need to use something like asp to sort that out?)

At any rate, please help. If this is not the right forum, can anyone direct me to a forum where I can pose this question????

    Thank you!!!

Date: 05/22/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: software, web

So as part of a community service project, I am trying to record books on "tape" for an elementary school teacher using the computer. I have a microphone, and have successfully recorded using the sound recorder software that comes with windows. But this software will only record for 60 seconds at a time. I tried looking around on the web for some other free recorders, but they seem to be limited to 60 second tracks also. I'm not looking for anything fancy (I don't need to add in other instruments, do mixing, etc, etc) but I would like something that would record longer tracks. Does anyone know of any free software out there that I could use for this purpose?

I'm looking for some advice. The professor in one of the classes my wife is taking found out I am a web designer (actually a web programmer) and wanted to know if I would design a site for a small business he has on the side. I've not talked to him about exactly what he wants but I imagine it to be a simple site showing his wares and how to contact him, possibly with an online shoping cart of some sort. DO you know any sites I can check to see what I should be charging him (what is normal for my area geographically)? Should I charge by the hour or the page count? I can add some extra features via PHP but am unfamiar with how to charge for that as well. Also, is asking that I can show off his site in my portfolio a standard condition or an unusual one? Thanks in advance for any advice!

  10. need help with Active Control.. ??

    Date: 05/22/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

I'm a sorta "new" web designer, I've only made a few sites.. and with this last one I made I have run into a problem. It seems the buttons on the page are prompting the "Click to Run ActiveX Control on this Webpage".

I have no clue why this is happening or how I can stop it. The buttons were made in frontpage, the easy way, no images or codes of my own.

I was just wondering if anyone knows why it does this and most importantly how I can fix it. A few people told me its been happening and I want to fix it before more people notice or just leave the site because its annoying.

    Heres the page : http://www.xlentlowriders.com/Pages/000000.htm

I have been having trouble with a few websites in Firefox lately. They don't look like they load fully. I tried loading them in IE and everything is perfect.

I ran spybot and found the following thing pop up:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\AntiVirusOverride!=dword=0 Kind=Registry.

Is this a virus? Did something get changed and I didn't know it?

If there is anything you can tell me, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks.

  13. A little help would be most appreciated!

Date: 05/22/06 (HTML Help)    Keywords: web

A couple of months ago, one of my webpages decided to stop showing any of the pictures, and I can't seem to get them to display properly anymore. I'm a bit stumped, because I'm pretty sure I haven't messed with the coding, though I might very well have without even knowing it. Hopefully, someone here can help me.

This is the page in question. It looks perfectly alright as local files on my computer, but as soon as I upload them, all the pictures go missing. Also, the coding of this page gets really screwed up. I'm fairly sure I never meant for half of that to be in Chinese.

I hope someone can tell me what it is I'm doing wrong.

Also, while I'm posting, is there any way to align text so it won't take all the space on the page like here, but will have a margin? It's not so bad on it's own, but it looks a bit hard to read when it's pressed up against the scrollbar in the frames on the page, especially in Firefox, since the code for changing the colours of the scrollbar doesn't work there like it does in IE.

  18. Putting Your Own Templates On A Website

Date: 05/24/06 (HTML Help)    Keywords: templates, html, web

Alright, I've volunteered to make / maintain my church's website, and it turns out that I know absolutely nothing about doing this.

I've downloaded a template from Boxed Art and I've also downloaded a program (SEEdit) to view the template, because I couldn't open the .html files with TextEdit.

I don't know where to begin. My webhost (iPower) uses an application-like thing called vDeck (here's a screenshot of it), and I'm not sure how to go about installing these templates and putting them to use.

One of the template pages is an .html file that looks like this:

  19. 2 questions

    Date: 05/23/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

So I just officially entered the world of professional Web development (yay!) and am now maintaining a Web site for the museum located at my university. The site is ugly, so I won't link it until I've made it pretty :).

So I have two questions for you guys:

    1. Do you guys know of a Web site where I can run my site for ADA compliance? I've searched on the Web and heard that they exist, but I can't find it anywhere.

    2. Is there a tool that I can use to build a site structure? What I mean by that is that I want a visual map of the location of all the files on the Web site ... a way that I can both visualize and conceptualize the site map. I know exacly what I'm thinking of but having trouble describing it ... maybe you know what I mean?

    Thanks for your help!
