design rates
Date: 05/03/06
(WebDesign) Keywords: web
Hello all,
I just moved to the Bay Area and I wanted to know what the going rates are for web design. I've been working in house for a company for a long time and am getting back to freelancing and I have no idea what hourly or per page rates are anymore. Though I don't need it at the moment, print graphic design and layout rates would be useful, too. Any information would be very helpful. Thanks!

FTP access
Date: 05/02/06
(WebDesign) Keywords: web
This isn't so much web design related as much as data transfer... I'm trying to figure out the best way to solve this issue.
My client has a PC with a few hundred scanned photos on it that need to make their way to my machine. I tried the obvious, burning the files onto a CD, but my mac won't read the CDs that their PC burns no matter what the settings are.
My two ideas are 1) I can download an FTP client on their computer to get the photos to my server and then on to my mac, or 2) there must be some way to connect the two machines, via USB or Firewire?
Any insight on either of these methods would be super helpful. I'd much rather not download a new program onto their computer since they're luddites and a little scared by things like that.

Calendar
Date: 05/03/06
(PHP Development) Keywords: php, web
I have a need for a particular set of functions in a calendar application for events (for use by a group that schedules events).
Basically, I want to have:
* Authenticated users adding events to the calendar.
* Anonymous users being able to search events in the calendar.
* Relatively flexible event scheduling, e.g. "third thursday of every month", "alternate fridays", etc.
* Relatively flexible event searching, e.g. "show me all events of type X in or near postcode Y" (and much more complex searching than that, too).
Now I'm reasonably resigned to the fact that I'm going to have to code a lot of this to get the searching functionality working the way I want it to at least, but can anyone offer me some starting points? I've looked at a few PHP calendar packages such as ExtCalendar2, phpCalendar, and WebCalendar, and also the PEAR Calendar class, but does anyone have any experience extending / modifying these to give me the sort of functionality I'm after?

I need something smaller...
Date: 05/03/06
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: browser, web
I'll start by explaining my job. I install wireless antennas on customer's houses for internet access. After they're mounted, I have to configure them via their web interface, connected directly with a cat5 cable. I'm currently using a laptop (gateway 200stm) but it's still too cumbersome for my job. I'm looking for something smaller, like maybe some type of pda, that has an ethernet port and internet explorer (or an equivalent browser). Any suggestions?

Website design...
Date: 05/03/06
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: html, web
Hey guys, I'm new here, and I've got a question about web design / building a website.
My church wants to have a website (a fairly interactive one), and I'm trying to find an inexpensive web designer, or a program that would let me or someone else design a good-looking site for a reasonable price.
Someone called my pastor, and said that she could make a site with Front Page for free. This is a sample of her work, and I'm not that impressed. I don't want our website to fall into the catgegory of 'typical church websites'... I want it to look nice, and I want people to enjoy it.
Can anyone recommend a program / web designer? I've been looking at Dreamweaver. How long would it take me to be able to make a site with that (I have a bit of HTML knowledge, and it mostly comes from manipulating someone else's coding)? I'm quite taken with this site (it's a template). How difficult would it be for me to make a design similar to that with Dreamweaver? How hard would it be to 'update' a template like that with new information / blogs? Would I need Dreamweaver to do that?
I apologize for all of my questions... I'm just praying that our church site won't look... cheesy. Any help would be extremely appreciated. If this post isn't permitted, I'll gladly delete it. :)

Indexing Documents
Date: 05/04/06
(IT Professionals) Keywords: web
OK, here is the scenario...
We are looking to create a searchable file repository on our internal web server (intranet) to replace an out-of-control network share.
File types are all over the grid, but the predominant ones are pdf, doc, xls and ppt. There also some others, but they are not as important.
Is there a reliable way to extract the text to allow it to be searched? I have found various products that accomplish this, but these can get quite pricey or are platform specific. What I am looking for is a methodology that can be utilized regardless of the platform.
I don't want to rely on system utilities like htdig or the IIS Index tool. I can open doc and xls and see the text, so I could potentially search them, but there is no discernible text in the pdf file I tried.
TIA

Improving myself

(Web Development) Keywords: php, mysql, css, html, sql, web
Hello!
I was wondering if I could get some advice on how to increase my skills as a web programmer and become more marketable. I know HTML backward and forwards, know quite a bit of PHP (especially in conjuction with MySQL) and CSS. I recently bought one of Eric Myer's books on CSS. It gave me ideas for layouts and such but didn't really expand my knowledge much. I also have a Sams 21 days book on .Net for a VB programmer (which I used to be till I didn't have access to Visual Studio). I thought about learning .Net but .Net requires the Visual Studio IDE and a server with .Net support, neither of which I have. What next? Should I go with AJAX maybe ? Also, I am a programmer, not a designer and would like to improve the artisitc side so my sites don't look as bad as they do now. Is there a list of topics every web developer should know before moving to other topics? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

machine programming (CNC)
Date: 05/04/06
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: programming, web
Does anyone here have any experience doing CNC programming? I'm looking for advice on whether or not to invest the time and money into learning CNC programming. I live in northeast Tennessee and it seems the only industry bigger than medicine here is manufacturing. I have experience programming (VB,some C++, and assorted web based languages) and was wondering if it would be difficult to learn whatever language is used in CNC programming. I'm under the impression that programming one language isn't too different from another once you know the syntax and such, the fundamentals of programming stay the same. Any advice? Thanks!
If there is another comm better suited for this, please let me know.

Weird emails generated from php contact form
Date: 05/04/06
(PHP Community) Keywords: php, browser, security, web, google
I'm pretty new to php, and this may be the dumbest question ever asked, but it's freaking me out.
I have a contact form on a website in php and it works perfectly fine. Once in a while, however, I will get 5-6 emails at once, all sent from the form, with weird email addresses (i.e. with the domain name of my site) that fill in all fields with the email address and the message is some sort of garbled version of a story by Hans Christian Andersen -- (I only know this because I googled the lines).
I have the form automatically send me an email that fills in field so that I get an email like the following if someone has an issue with the website:
Someone has a website issue.
A user, $name, has an issue on the page $url
The issue is: $message
They are using $browser as a web browser and when asked if they would like a follow-up they said $followup.
Their email address is $email
But I will sometimes get emails like the following:
Someone has a website issue.
A user, blood7007@mydomain.com, has an issue on the page et

Their email address is blood7007@mydomain.com.
All of the emails are also blank carbon copying to the same address, the aol one as listed above.
So, I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how and why these are sent, if it's a security issue, etc... and what I should have in place to prevent it, if it's possible.

Throw IIS errors in Asp.net
Date: 05/04/06
(Asp Dot Net) Keywords: security, web
We're working on using Windows authentication on our intranet site. We're trying to block out users that do not have permission to various folders (NT security.) We don't like using the web.config allow/deny setting because we don't want to "prompt" the user for their information. We just want to either allow them or deny them. I'm trying to write authenication on the code side to check if the user is authorized. If the user is not authorized I want to throw the 401.2 Error Screen (Access is denied.) Does anyone know how to throw this specific error? My co-worker said that you can throw IIS errors in code, but I can't seem to find any information on this. Thanks.

Dynamically-generated images
Date: 05/05/06
(WebDesign) Keywords: database, web
I'm looking for information on dynamically-generated server-side images. For example, at a set interval, a program on my webserver could read some data from a database, and create a small image that contains this information, laid out all nice and neat.
I've browsed around for some information, but I can't seem to find any simple tutorials. How would I go about doing something like this? What languages should/could I use? Would I be able to assemble larger images from a composite of smaller images, or would I have to hard-code the entire image from hand?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

strange background....
Date: 05/05/06
(HTML Help) Keywords: web
hello peoples.
i'm using dreamweaver 8, and it is doing the most bizarre thing i have ever seen it do in regards to the background. if i preview the website within dreamwaver it looks fine, just as i want it (tested in both explorer and firefox). however, when i upload it onto the net, the background is quite smaller and tiling! another bizzare thing is that if i made the image bigger via photoshop (to compensate for the smaller view), reimport it into dreamweaver, then reupload it on the net, it does no change and remains tiled. i was thinking it might be my screen resolution, but that doesn't make sense since it looks fine in dreamweaver's previews. does anyone have any idea what is going on here?
thanks a million.

I'm currently moving hosts, from a host with mySQL 4.1.18 to 4.0.25. The site was made with a php templating program called website baker. For some reason when I backup the database in mySQL 4.1.18 (with compatibility for earlier versions) and I try to upload the database using cpanel in the new one, it just doesn't recognize anything and won't restore the database. Any ideas on how I could get around this?
