Editing Links in Pop-Out Menus, But Where?
Date: 05/17/07
Keywords: html, asp, java, web
I'm currently working for this company. It's my responsibility to edit the website.
I'm having a problem finding where exactly I can edit the links for the pop-out menus. I'm relatively new to ASP, but I've been fine for most editing thus far as the majority of the code is actually HTML.
I am not seeing which file has the pop-out parts of the menu. I found the ASP file for the menu, but it doesn't seem to have the pop-out parts. I know the code has to be somewhere, I'm just having trouble finding it. I think it's mainly because I'm not seeing the file names for the items linked in the pop-out menus anywhere in the file for the menu.
I'm suspecting it has to do with the JavaScript, but I've never used "cswmShow" before, so I don't fully understand how it's working.
I'd really appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction. Thank you!

Finding the "Right Sized" Store/Admin
Date: 05/17/07
Keywords: php, oscommerce, web, shopping
I realize questions have been asked frequently about online webstore/shopping cart sources. I've checked out both oscommerce and zen cart, and they both seem great, but oscommerce is far too bloated with features for the limited functionality I need, and zen cart doesn't seem to support the payment gateways I'd like.
Does someone have a recommendation for a vary basic web store? It's for a site for an artist/licensor who would like to sell some of her published items on her own site. It is not primarily a webstore, and the store part will function as a hybrid gallery/store.
Basically, here's all I need, no more no less:
- Customizable (to intergrate with existing site)
- An admin area that enables the client to add or remove products on her own
- Capability for about 30 items for sale (that's all)
- I would prefer to have a payment gateway for standard credit card processing and paypal, but mostly standard credit card processing (which, from what I can gather, zen cart does not offer)
- Integrated checkout (not one that takes you to a gateway's checkout page)
That's really all I need. It's really simple and low on features. What should I be looking at?
I have a very basic knowledge of php -- can't write it but can work my way around pre-written php.

Can someone reccomend a decent beginners book for Ruby?
I'm leaning towards this but I have no experience with that particular line.
For my PHP reference, I use this and it has everything layed out nicely for me, but the only Ruby book I could find in that line was for Ruby on Rails E-Commerce, which is not the way I'm wanting to go.
Thanks so much!

McDonalds.com
Date: 05/15/07
Keywords: technology, web
Is it just me or does McDonalds have a really awful web layout? http://www.McDonalds.com
Here is a note I wrote to McDonalds about it:
Your website is really awful. I've been looking around the net for all the major brands I can think of (I'm a designer/developer and am always looking to see what other designers come up with) and I expected a corporation as big as McDonalds to have a better page than this. I realize not many of your customers have any need for McWeb interaction, but as a major (perhaps one of THE major) corporations in the world, you should do some justice to your product and have a nice webpage. You might want to take a look at what http://www.gotmilk.com/ has done with the get the glass campaign http://www.gettheglass.com/ for example. I would think that particularly with all the contests you have going that you could come up with something better than this. I would suggest aiming at more content and a more interactive web 2.0 layout. The future is now, after all, and if McDonalds has been able to adapt and survive, even grow as a corportation for the past 50 years, you'd think you would be keeping up with the times and technology of 2007.
Whereas, oddly enough Burger King seems to hire pretty good designers: www.bk.com
On a different note, if anyone knows of some really excellent corporate pages (especially retail) I'd appreciate you pointing me in the right direction. Thanks in advance!

Flash (and other format) Encoding - average file sizes
Date: 05/12/07
Keywords: web
I encode many video for the web in various formats , QT, WM, Flash, etc. Depending on the size / type of file / action vs talking heads, the file size can vary.
I was curious what file sizes all of you guage per minute of video. For example, would you shoot for 3MB/min for flash video...on an average broadband connection? What about QT? Windows Media?
Again, I know many factors go into the encode process, but what average total file size per minute do you shoot for?
Thanks!

help with a:hover and IE

I'm using CSS to create a simple rollover effect with borders on this page. The usual: works fine in all other browsers except IE (6 or 7).
Any suggestions?

As I understand it, browser versions prior to ie7 did not support the :hover selector on anything but anchors... well, these are applied to an anchor pseudo class, so I'm not sure why they're not working....

Discography Section Ideas
Date: 05/10/07
Keywords: google
Hello everyone. I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this and if this in inappropriate a mod may delete this, but I am in need of ideas. I really want to re-do the discography section of my site but I a unsure of what to do different. I want to make it more easy to navigate with less scrolling but I don't want to make a separate page for each release, I feel that is too many pages and it will only get more cumbersome over time. I am really just looking for any ideas anyone has or even if anyone knows of any sites that have nice discography sections I can look at. I've been spending the past few days looking at different sites I Google trying to get ideas but nothing has really struck me yet. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

setting up domain hosting
Date: 05/09/07
Keywords: web, yahoo
I have a question.
I just bought a domain from Yahoo. I was looking and I found someone else to host me. She e-mailed me all this information [under cut]
Here is the information for your domain.
+===================================+
| New Account Info |
+===================================+
| Domain: -
| Ip: -
| HasCgi: y
| UserName: -
| PassWord: -
| CpanelMod: x
| HomeRoot: /home
| Quota: 800 Meg
| NameServer1: -
| NameServer2: -
| NameServer3:
| NameServer4:
| Contact Email:
+===================================+
Your ftp info (when the domain resolves) is:
ftp.DOMAINHERE.net
username: -
password: -
I took out all the information she gave me. Now my question is. Where do I put all this information? I went to Yahoo's DNS Management thing and to Change Nameservers but it says that Yahoo has to be either the Primary or Secondary [the girl gave me 2 nameservers]. I'm lost with that. Also I have no idea where to put the IP address and everything else.
I know the FTP info goes into the FTP Client [which i'm using SmartFTP, btw].
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I e-mailed the girl twice and have yet got gotten responses, so thats why i'm posting this here.

CSS problem in Firefox?
Date: 05/08/07
Keywords: browser, css, html
I'm having an issue with the display of my div boxes, and I'm not sure what the problem is. The weird thing is that I've tested using the exact same browser as the client (Firefox v.2.0.0.3), but we are not seeing the same thing, so I can't even try to recreate the problem at my end.
I have several divs stacked on top of each other, with a grey border and two columns of text. It should look something like this:
and it looks fine in both IE and Firefox at my end. However, my client says that, while it looks fine in IE for her, in Firefox, it is looking like this:
She says that the grey lines are not static. They drag around as she scrolls up and down the page. However, they appear to be contained within the div (ex. they are not moving up to the header area or across the page)
Here is my CSS (.services is the container, .servicespic is the left column, and .servicesdesc is the right column):
.services {
width:90%;
padding:10px;
margin-left:30px;
margin-bottom:20px;
border:#CCCCCC solid thin;
overflow:auto;
}
.servicespic {
text-align:center;
vertical-align:middle;
}
.servicesdesc {
width:60%;
float:right;
font:0.9em Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
text-align:left;
}
and here is an example of the HTML for the divs:

iframe crazyness
Date: 05/07/07
Keywords: asp, web
Ok.. yes.. I know... iframes is not the ideal thing to have.
I've got a client that needs iframes so they can bring in external real estate listings (they're a remax agent) into the website.
The problem is the remax site is not completely flush-left in the iframe. I've tried to get this to work to no avail.
www.bobcoxteam.com/searchall.asp is the address.
The code I have is
src="http://rochester1.minnesota.remax.com/Listings/Residential_r4.aspx?CID=11775944" name="playing" id="playing" width="730" height="800" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" hspace="0" vspace="0" align="left" scrolling="yes" frameborder="0"
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris

Questionnaire
Date: 05/05/07
Keywords: php, browser, css, html, xml, asp, java, web
Hi everyone!
I'm new here, but expect to come back soon enough with real insight and input. In the meantime, I'm working on a tech report (whoever said going back to college would be easy needs to be shot on sight) and could use your help.
I've developed a questionnaire for web designers/developers and would love your input. It will be used for a feasibility report that will analyze and recommend a core set of web languages for training and hiring employees of, say, a small webdesign company. I am willing to forward to anyone the completed report if requested and am also willing to provide copies of other assignments that have been part of this report. After all, I look at unsolicited surveys like this with quite a bit of skepticism and usually want some background.
If you frequent other webdesign forums/communities, please excuse the likelihood of verbatim cross posting, as I am desperately in need of responses (I need quantifiable results within two weeks, yikes!) and don't much have the time to rewrite an introduction six times.
If you have additional input beyond what I'm asking in the survey, please feel free to give your opinions. Thanks in advance for your time and help.
~Ang

divs for backgrounds
Date: 05/01/07
Keywords: no keywords
Is there any easy way to create a div which would act as a container that says everything in the container takes up 100% of the width and height that is in view? I have found links like this but it's not been very helpful as I try to make a div that sets all of its content to take up 100% of the screen space. This link was useful for me to successfully make the appropriate divs for upper and lower curves (see my original dilemma here).
Any suggested links or tips on how to say "hey, make all of this content take up 100% of the width and height the user can see on screen" so that my lower right-side curves appear fixed to the lower-right side of the screen, not just the small div area? Thanks a bunch!
