1. well designed site

    Date: 02/28/06     Keywords: no keywords

I thought you guys might enjoy this - it's so well designed and a lot of fun. it really is about doodling cocks, so it's probably not work safe... but it's lighthearted and manages to avoid being offensive, so don't be afraid to check it out. plus, it's in support of a good cause (ending cancer, you pervs!!).

  2. after a website goes live...

    Date: 02/27/06     Keywords: no keywords

I've been thinking about providing my clients with a short little questionnaire a month of so after their site goes live. Besides just asking if they'd like to provide me with a testimonial, I think it would be a good way to find out what a client likes about their site, what their customers think and what I could have done to improve things. This would certainly be useful information and would help me to build better sites. Do any of you do this already? What kind of questions do you (or would you) ask?

  3. Audio player detection

    Date: 02/25/06     Keywords: no keywords

I've got a internet radio station that until now has had listen links that were simple links to .pls, .asx and .ram files

I want to spruce this up and have it so the listener can choose the speed of thier connection and then the player they want to use.

Is there anyone that has seen this done kinda slick like so it's easy to understand and works well? Maybe even a test that runs that the listener is then presented with a suggested way to listen based on thier connection and installed players?

  4. Need some critique

    Date: 02/24/06     Keywords: web

Hey guys. Wondering if you all would mind taking a look at a couple of layouts I've made. My company is re-doing their website once again and I have a couple of ideas in mind. Wanted to get your opinions on what you think is best as far as design and layout structrue. I'd really appreciate it.

    Test 1

    Test 2

No links are working except for Members. If you want to access that please use username: aacamember and password: aacaparts to login. ( Thanks to '[info]'malantha and '[info]'kaydee_c for helping me figure that out. :) )

  5. not exactly design but...i need web help :(

    Date: 02/24/06     Keywords: browser

Ok.. first off i'm not sure how to phrase or if this is the right place to ask so...sorry for the rambling.. but.. here goes nothing...

I have about 7 .mov files embeded on 7 different pages. They work fine.. they load fine. BUT my client says that most of his prospective clients have PCs withOUT quicktime and he wants to make it easy for them to view , and can i make them AVI files instead. (i know.. i know.. )
So I do that...but then my embed tag doesnt seem to work for some reason...

I found a way to insert> video but that will play my AVI files but it only works with IE.

So here's my question. How can i have one page check for the browser and then choose which string of code to read?
I don't know if that made sence but i now there's a way to have a page determine the browser.. i just.. dont know how.. and i'm not sure i can have it then go read the line that will work on said browser.
Any links or help would be helpful.. thanks!

OK.. so.. heh, i have new problem.
Now the my object tag isnt working.. See here> http://www.karlinpimsler.com/pages/tv/brava2.htm

    ideas anyone?

  6. Password Protection

    Date: 02/23/06     Keywords: web

Does anyone know of/have any good scripts for password protecting a section of a webpage? Or even know where I can find a good tutorial on how to do it? I've been looking around the net and have yet to find one that I really like. My client wants to have a member's section that will have bonus features to the site, and it needs to be password protected. All I want is for them to be able to login and then be re-directed to the member's section. There will be one username and password that all members will use. Any help and points in the right direction is appreciated. Thanks guys!

P.S. I just wanted to say that this community is awesome. I have learned so much from all of you over the past few months, and I just want to say a big thank you to everyone.

It should look about like this:

Please let me know what browser\OS you're using. I've tested thus far in FF 1.0 and IE6 on Win XP Pro.

Edit: None of the navigation links will work, so that's not an issue.

is wordpress or typo better for this? or something else?

i installed wordpress last night and was trying to figure it out. does it need a "plug-in" to have two updatable sections on one page?

    Date: 02/22/06     Keywords: no keywords

I've used CFM-Resources.com for nearly 5 years now, and I just got an email from that they are going out of business.

I rely on my email account with them. A lot. I need to transfer this ASAP, preferrably to another ColdFusion host since that's what my site is built in and I dont have time to convert it. Also, I need the host to allow email (me@domainname.com) .

    suggestions?

  11. Html emails in Outlook

    Date: 02/22/06     Keywords: html, google

A client of mine has requested an html email template to be used in Outlook. I'm almost positive this can be done, because I used to do them for clients at my last workplace. Problem is I never actually did the set up portion in Outlook.

I use Thunderbird so I can't really mess around with it that way, and google has failed me. I seem to only find how-to's on inserting a single picture or link. Rar.

Okay, there's my problem. Does anybody here know a link to a tutorial or can explain to me how you can set a template from a pre-existing html document?

    thanks!

  12. small thumbnails to larger images on the same page??

    Date: 02/22/06     Keywords: css, web

I'm currently making (yet another) portfolio web site. My main structure is fairly common--- a series (maybe 10-16) of tiny thumbnails of images is on the left. You rollover one of the small jpgs and a larger version of it appears on the same page off to the right. I've been trying to figure out how the heck to do this the most efficient way. I could easily do it in Flash, but am wondering if there's a better way since these images are fairly large for jpgs. I don't want to use frames and my CSS isn't great. (I'm fairly good with Dreamweaver and would rather not code if possible-- is there a behavior (other than the hide/show layers) that I'm missing that exists in Dreamweaver MX for this sort of thing???) Anyone have any suggestions or can point me to some dummy tutorials? Sorry if this is a very stupid question.

  13. Project time!

    Date: 02/22/06     Keywords: no keywords

    osteosarcoma online

I'm looking for critique if you have a moment. Not every page is done (new revised content is in progress, and/or it's a matter of converting lots of Word doc's into decent markup), but basically it's a kind of bone cancer that strikes teens and young adults for the most part, so that's the main audience. To a lesser extent, there's stuff for parents, teachers, and health professionals too. But its design is mainly for young people.

The main proplem is that about halfway through the project, the people I was working with decided they really liked curesearch.org and wanted to emulate that (just short of copying their whole content organization, and parts of the layout). I had to try and corral them back to something that takes that into account, but works more with what we're trying to do.

I guess the questions are 'can you navigate well', and especially when the content goes a few layers deep (http://www.freshformsolutions.com/osteosarcoma/patients/aftertreatment/ and then check out the 'late effects' first item there is one of the deeper-level sections that is done). Also, does the whole site seem cohesive enough?

    Thanks for looking!

  14. HTMLview problems with WMP10 due to security updates?

Date: 02/21/06     Keywords: software, browser, html, security, web, microsoft

Ok. This is a odd one...

In addition to running a web design firm, I also own a Classic Rock station. I've got a neat feature called "The 8 Track Player" which shows whats playing as well as the last 7 songs. This is a stand alone browser window that the visitor to the site opens.

This will also open inside Windows media player if a visitor chooses to listen to the station with that software (the station runs shoutcast natively).

until a week or so ago, the refresh code that I have was working fine in both stand-alone and Windows Media Player (WMP) but now the WMP does not refresh yet the stand-alone does.

Both stand alone and WMP use the same code, and there's not been any changes to the code.

The refresh method I am using is:

My theory is that MS has with a security update with Windows XP or WMP 10 changed something that does not allow the VB or Meta to work.

    a) does anyone know something about this problem?

    b) is there a good place to ask this in-depth question? Have posted on microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player.web already.

    c) do you think my meta tag or vbscript have an error in it that was working before in WMP with HTMLView until a tightening of code control was implemented?

    Thanks,
    Chris

I need to know price and turn around time estimate. Take a look at www.conxis.com and you will see what I have currently. Not really looking to change copy on the portfolio page or add new pages to the site.

  18. getting a server

    Date: 02/21/06     Keywords: web

Hey I am new to webdesigning...I have a few questions about getting a server.

-i use dreamweaver and I know I have to get a server for a remote site to upload my files to. I need to get a site that I can get a domain name for, and all that stuff. How exactly does that work?

-when i purchase a domain name and get a server, do they give me all the information and the password and all the stuff to type into the section for establishing a remote site?

-when i get the server, what would i select: ftp, local/network, etc..

-i dont need to get an additional file uploading program like cuteftp or anything if i have dreamweaver right? i assume i can just do the uploading straight on that program

sorry if these questions seem ridiculous, but i really just started learning and if you guys can help me out at all i would be so happy. any advice would be appreciated so much. thanks!

  20. Oh help! Who should host my site?

Date: 02/18/06     Keywords: rss, css, web, hosting

I've created a new website (Simple Vegetarian Recipes) as step one in trying to write a vegetarian cookbook. To make the site, I paid $299 for a service that does a whole bunch of stuff for you to help you submit it to search engines and the like.

Long story short (and I find it to be a funny story) I am on the brink of getting a refund and taking my site elsewhere. Except this service does a few things that I don't know how to do. Namely, they create and automatically update a sitemap for me, and they set up an RSS feed for me. They also use CSS, which I don't know how to do. I'm not sure how it's gonna work when I take my site somewhere else exactly. I know where I can go to get the site set up somewhere else, and fortunately, I don't even think too many links will break. Any recommendations on where I can take the site or how I can set this stuff up?

The short story is that the webhosting people are NUTS. Some lady put her site in a forum called "Submit Site for Review" and it was a terrible site and I told her that. Actually, I clicked on it hoping it would be great. It is about gardening. I wanted to bookmark it and use it as a primary resource in creating a garden. But it's a sales pitch with no content. The site drove me away and I told her why. She got all bent out of shape over it, and things kind of snowballed. I thought she would thank me for telling her why her site isn't doing well. That's why she asked to have it reviewed, right?

The owner of the company is now involved in all of this. It's like living in some altnerative world where everyone is crazy. I found a way to optimize the UI of the site and I put my suggestion into another forum. The woman with the bad gardening site found my post and put a link to the original post there, and lo and behold, the millionaire owner of the company found the thread and posted a reply. I really don't appreciate his patronizing attitude towards me. So now he's threatening to give me a week to move my site and then to refund my money - and I'm more than glad to take the refund and move. I just don't know where to go!!!
