1. xml loads in Firefox but not IE

    Date: 10/10/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: xml, security

    I have a SWF loading an XML file from a remote location, on an HTTPS server. I'm testing the swf from a local machine. In Firefox, the XML data loads and displays just fine in the SWF, but in IE, the data doesnt display at all, and I'm not sure if it's even loading.

    Is there a security setting I need to be aware of? has anyone else run into this?

    Thanks.

  3. array to xml

    Date: 11/13/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, xml

    Been scanning through php.net's site for a couple of hours looking to see if there was a function that could convert a nested associative array into an xml object or into xml string. I see plenty of functions to take xml strings and convert them into a DOMDocument.

    I guess I could create something that loops through the elements and places tags based on key/value pairs but I would think with PHP's massive library of functions, such a simple function would exist? Just missing it I guess. Anyone know?

  5. Sitemaps?

    Date: 12/01/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: html, xml, web, seo, yahoo, google

    Do people still use these on their actual websites? I'm helping a woman launch her website and she would like to include a sitemap. I know you can generate XML and HTML ones specifically for Google and Yahoo! and things like that, but what about plain, easy-to-read ones to actually put on your website for people browsing your website to look at? Can that still be helpful in terms of SEO?

    Thanks!

    Edit: Two other questions...is it better to create your own sitemap or are programs that create them for you pretty good? I found one that I thought looked good: http://www.sitemappro.com/

    Also, the site in question is password protected, only members can view certain sites...should every page still be on the sitemap even though non-members won't be able to access it?

  9. Writing a SOAP server

    Hello everyone. I have a web service sort of like a gallery written in PHP, and I'd like to make it externally accessible to use in other remote applications. I was thinking of using the SOAP protocol, but it's hard to find how to write a SOAP server in PHP (everything I can find is making a SOAP client.)

    Anyone that could point me to a tutorial, give me a simple example, or point me to another protocol that's easier to write for (XML-RPC) would be great help. Thanks!

    P.S.  This will all be for internal use, so functions don't need to be exposed, and such.

  12. "dynamic" resizing

    Date: 01/15/07 (Javascript Community)    Keywords: php, html, xml

    i have a div that's populated ("ajax-ey") with search results.

    more text and stuff here
    blah blah

    if few results are returned, i want the div to expand vertically to accomodate them, and push the "more text and stuff" down a little. which is how it works by default. however, if the div ends up with a ton of data in it, i'd like to shrink it down and allow the user to scroll through the results. i don't want to shove the "more text and stuff" 8,000,000 pixels down.

    i tried this (the alerts are for trouble shooting):

    function search(search_val) {
        xml_http = ajax();
        if (xml_http) {
            document.getElementById('search_results').style.display = "block";
            url = encodeURI("./search.php?search="+search_val);
            xml_http.open("GET",url,true);
            xml_http.onreadystatechange=function() {
                if (xml_http.readyState!=4) {
                    document.getElementById('search_results').innerHTML="Searching...";
                }

                else if (xml_http.readyState==4) {
                    document.getElementById('search_results').innerHTML=xml_http.responseText;
                }
            }
            xml_http.send(null);
            resize_element('search_results',300);
        }
    }

    function resize_element(elem,size) {
        alert("checking...");
        if (document.getElementById(elem).clientHeight > size) {
            alert("resizing");
            document.getElementById(elem).style.height = size;
        }
    }

    no matter where i call the resize_element function, it keeps firing before the search_results element is fully populated, and oftentimes doesn't resize the thing at all. so, is there a better way to implement this? is there a way to say, "ok, the client has displayed all of the data, now check the size... ?

    As I look for alternative employment I see a lot of wanted ads asking for a web designer who are proficient in several web-programming languages (they usually specify PHP/ASP/CGI-Perl), the use of several different databasing formats (Access, SQL of some sort, Oracle) - proficient in several different forms of design (Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator, FreeHand, Quark, etc) as well as being a master of JavaScript, XHTML, XML, DHTML, CSS and any other acronym they seem to have found on google.

    To me this sounds like they are asking for a web-design team wrapped into one person. Am I crazy; or are they?

  16. Random Flash Image Banner

    Date: 02/06/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: xml

    This is not my favorite sort of thing as it looks very banner ad to me, anyhow I'm not in control of this project so……

    I need to create a 720x169 px strip that has images and words moving across and randomly changing fading in and out. Is there a base actionscript or fla file available somewhere that will just do this pulling the images from a folder and the words from an XML or text file? and hopefully freeware too.

    I could possibly put this together myself, but this is one of those needs to be done yesterday things.
    Eventually I will have to make the images and words links, but not right for this, so something that could incorpoate linking the items would be a plus though.

  17. Simple and consistent use of ajax

    Date: 02/08/07 (Javascript Community)    Keywords: xml

    Ajax Callbacks

    I've been slowly increasing the use of Ajax upon one of my sites.

    Since I'm only using it for two or three specific things it was simple enough to add the code to just those pages, and add the backend handler to return the appropriate data.

    Now I'm starting to consolidate things to make it simpler and to make sure that all my handlers are consistent.

    So I've written some code which looks like this:

    //
    //  Make an AJAX request.
    //
    // This function takes three parameters :
    //
    // 1. The URL to request.
    //
    // 2. The function to call upon successful completion of the AJAX request.
    //
    // 3. The function to call upon AJAX error.
    //
    function makeAjaxRequest( url, ok_function, err_function )
    {
        var xmlObj = getXMLHTTPRequest();
        if(! xmlObj )
        {
            err_function(nil);
            return;
        }

        xmlObj.onreadystatechange = function()
        {
            if(xmlObj.readyState == 4)
            {
                //
                //  Cancel the timeout.
                //
                clearTimeout(requestTimer);

                if (xmlObj.status==200)
                {
                    ok_function(xmlObj);
                }
                else
                {
                    err_function(xmlObj);
                }
            }
        }
        xmlObj.open ('GET', url,  true);

        //
        // Setup timeout of 10 seconds.
        //
        var requestTimer = setTimeout(function() { xmlObj.abort(); }, 10000 );

        xmlObj.send ('');
    }

    This gets called with three arguments, the URL to request, and two functions for either "OK" or "error" results.

    eg:

        makeAjaxRequest(  "/ajax/tags/type/" + type,

                         //
                         // Called on OK
                         //
                         function( obj ) {
                             // Show the result message.
                             updateObj( 'current_tags' , obj.responseText );

                             // Clear the tag input field.
                             updateObjValue( 'new_tag', '' );
                         },

                         //
                         // Called on error.
                         //
                         function ( obj ) {
                             // Show the result message.
                             updateObj( 'current_tags' , obj.responseText );
                         } );

    }

    Does this seem like a reasonable approach?

    Should I be using a very simple and lightweight library to do this kind of thing for me?

  18. How much open source progress flies under your radar?

    Date: 02/15/07 (Open Source)    Keywords: xml

    If you and your trading partners want to create your own flavor of XML you can do so, using any tags you want. So long as all of you attach the same meanings to the tags, so long as there is consensus and transparency, your scheme works for all of you. But the benefits really start growing when whole industries, or industry as a whole, uses the same set of tags, as in ebXML.

  20. Site Search Engine

    Date: 02/25/07 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, rss, xml, web

    I was wondering if there is a good place to use a php
    site search engine that will search your web site.
    I found a grep one and put it here:
    http://www.cardeologist.com/search.php
    but, it will show some files I don't want it to, like my
    sitemap.xml and my rss file, robots.txt file, etc.
    Is there a better one or a way to disallow files?
    And if I wanted to add subdomains, can I do that?

    Search cardelogist.com:

    " method="post">
    value="" size="20"
    maxlength="30"/>

    if (! empty($searchstr)) {
    // empty() is used to check if we've any search string.
    // If we do, call grep and display the results.
    echo '

    ';
    // Call grep with case-insensitive search mode on all files
    $cmdstr = "grep -i $searchstr *";
    $fp = popen($cmdstr, 'r'); // open the output of command as a pipe
    $myresult = array(); // to hold my search results
    while ($buffer = fgetss($fp, 4096)) {
    // grep returns in the format
    // filename: line
    // So, we use split() to split the data
    list($fname, $fline) = split(':', $buffer, 2);
    // we take only the first hit per file
    if (! defined($myresult[$fname])) {
    $myresult[$fname] = $fline;
    }
    }
    // we have results in a hash. lets walk through it and print it
    if (count($myresult)) {
    echo '

      ';
      while (list($fname, $fline) = each ($myresult)) {
      echo "
    1. $fname : $fline
    2. \n";
      }
      echo '

    ';
    } else {
    // no hits
    echo "Sorry. Search on $searchstr
    returned no results.
    \n";
    }
    pclose($fp);
    }
