question: rotating ad script/database for newspaper employment classifieds: "Top Jobs" style
Date: 08/03/05
(WebDesign) Keywords: html, database, web, yahoo
Hello, I am a long-time lurker to this community and have always found the advice given to other quite helpful in my webmastering/design endevors. I work for a local newspaper running their website, and have a small issue that I could really use some helpful advice on. Any fingers pointing in the right direction would be much appreciated!
The newspaper website I run is looking to do some major much-needed updating, and implementing a "Top Jobs" database option is one of them. Much in the light of larger websites like Yahoo Hot Jobs, and even smaller newspaper websites such as Lawrence-Journal World (Kansas), we are looking to have some kind of rotating script/database that will pull randomly from our uploaded employment classifieds and display links to these ads on several pages of the website (in the designated "Top Jobs" display box that will be created and placed on these pages).
I am really lost on even how to begin this project, as it was most recently presented to me that this Top Jobs section should include ALL of the employment ads posted (which can number over 300 at times), and rotate them on a normal basis so that each one has airtime, several times a day. Doing all of this by hand would take DAYS!
What I believe we need is a server side internal database with a perl script written that would automatically pull these ads off the .shtml pages created for the employment classifieds. If you have any info on how to go about obtaining this, or know any information on how to even go about doing this (assuming I am incorrect)....please let me know!
I would be very greatful!

Firefox's Market Share Slides in July
Date: 08/15/05
(Mozilla) Keywords: security, linux, yahoo, microsoft
I was taken by suprise this morning, when I read the news that FX's market share shrunk from 8.71 percent in July to 8.07 percent in June. On the other hand, IE grew its market slice to 87.20 in July from 86.56 percent in June. I was under the impression that FX had been receiving a push from the Linux side, attracting the corporate community to its side.
I wonder if negative publicity of security flaws detected in FX's v.1.0.4. and 1.0.5., scared FX's users to the IE's camp. Some of my friends and colleagues, have commented that they are very positive of new features to be included in next v.1.5. which would probably be announced by late summer. I, for one, am very excited about this upgrade.
FYI, Total Market Share Percentage is distributed as follows:
1. Microsoft - Internet Explorer: 87.20 2. Mozilla - Firefox: 8.07 3. Apple - Safari: 2.13 4. AOL - Netscape: 1.50 5. Opera - Opera: 0.49 6. Others: 0.61
Any comments regarding this news?

Volume Control / Webcam
Date: 08/16/05
(Computer Help) Keywords: web, yahoo
Howdy. I seem to be having trouble with the volume/sound on my computer. I can't hear music, I can't hear sounds, I can't hear anything. I turn up the volume and nothing happens except a buzzing noise. I tried to go to start > programs > accessories > entertainment > volume control, to see if there was a problem, but nothing comes up when I click it.
The speakers are plugged into the computer the way they're supposed to be. Could it be the sound card or something?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Second problem is, when I try to use my webcam on MSN messenger, it pauses for a moment and then says:
You have invited [ insert msn name here ] to start viewing webcam. Please wait for a response or Cancel (Alt+Q) the pending invitation. Your conversation cannot begin because your camera is currently in use or not plugged in. Make sure your camera is available and try again. You have canceled your invitation to start viewing webcam.
But the webcam works perfectly fine on yahoo messenger and PSP. I am so confused. Someone please help me, thanks it is appreciated.

Yahoo's Music LAUNCHCast and Mozilla's Firefox Don't Mix
Date: 08/19/05
(Mozilla) Keywords: browser, web, yahoo
Yesterday I tried to listen to a customized Yahoo radio station under the category of Yahoo Music LAUNCHcast. Probably you have also seen this ad all over Yahoo's web pages. They are copycatting, Apple's iTunes business model of selling or subscribing to music service over the Internet. They even designed a pretty looking music player named the Yahoo Music Engine. Well, to continue my sad story, I could not connect to "any" of their radio station. Instead, I got the following message: Error: Sorry, we do not support Netscape on the Windows platform. Error code 25-0.
Did I get the message right? Are Netscape's browsers being discriminated here? Has this happened to you? and if it has, what do you think? I felt rejected because I was using Firefox; in my opinion, the best web browser around.
I'm not happy, to put it mildly. I wrote them an e-mail expressing my disappointment, but as of this moment, no one has answered from Yahoo's Customer Service Department.
Regards,
Omar.-

two problems.

(Computer Help) Keywords: yahoo, microsoft
My error messages are enormous. When a program tells me that it has encountered a problem and asks me if I want to send an error report to Microsoft, the message takes up half the screen. The font is huge; I don't know what size it is, but it's huge. I don't know how to change the size of the font. How do you do this?
In addition, Yahoo Messenger is acting strangely. When I try to IM anyone, it shuts down and gives me...sigh...a huge error message. It won't tell me what's wrong or what to do.

No Gmail
Date: 08/28/05
(Computer Help) Keywords: security, virus, antivirus, yahoo, google
I cannot check Gmail. When I try to get to the Gmail.com page, Firefox says "The connection was refused while trying to contact www.google.com . But I can get onto Google just fine, I can't get to Gmail. And I can't log onto Google Talk, either.
I can get onto LJ just fine. I can get on AIM. I just can't check my Gmail.
I was online last night and it worked fine, then my sister got online [which is something I say a lot because it's always after she's on that something goes wrong] and she couldn't get to Yahoo Mail because Norton Internet Security launched the Parental Controls and blocked Yahoo, saying "Norton Antivirus blocked the page http://mail.yahoo.com" or something like that. So I went around and reset the accounts to allow Yahoo Mail and it was fine, so I thought. But when I got back on, I couldn't access Gmail. I cleared my cache, cookies, passwords, history, and rebooted. I ran MSCONFIG and set my startup to run all the programs it ran when I bought the computer, because I'd set it yesterday to not run anything it didn't need to. I thought that would make it better, but I didn't notice a change at all. I tried using IE, Mozilla, and Netscape after that. They all said "The connection was refused while trying to contact www.google.com" except for IE which pulled up a "This page could not be displayed" page.
When I got online this morning, my DSL box said that everything was connected and running, but Firefox would not load anything, AIM would not connect, and Google Talk still wasn't working. I restarted again and tried Firefox again and still no Gmail. LJ is fine, AIM is fine, GTalk is still not working.
Scratch that, GTalk just started working right now and told me I have 7 emails. I tried to check them through a link GTalk, but it said "The page you requested is invalid."
I'm completely stumped. I just bought this computer, a Compaq at Circuit City [I don't remember the model, but it was $374 which was all I had enough for] two weeks ago and have had problems with it since I bought it. I have an old eMachines that ran Win95 when I bought it, and even though it was on the fritz all the time, it is running better than this computer is, but it's not connected to the internet, so that might be what's making it go faster.
Does anyone have any idea what could be blocking me from using Gmail?
[Edit: It is now working, after trying for an hour. I've always had a problem on this computer with it not starting Gmail when I first connect. Is that a normal problem or is there any way to fix it?]

Possible Virus?
Date: 09/07/05
(Computer Help) Keywords: virus, web, yahoo
The history: Several months back I was looking for a certain model for a certain hair-do for a friend. I clicked around many different Web sites and links and whatnot. All of a sudden, while on a page, I started getting bombarded with pop-ups. Normally pop up blockers work for me. Then, even if not online (well, technically, having DSL means always being connected, but...) like if I'm in, say, Word, I get pop-ups! I told a co-worker, who has a lot more experience than I, and she said to run Norton, Anti-Spy, delete cookies, empty trash and restart. She said deleting my cookies every night would fix it. Wrongola. It helps a little, but not totally. When I ran Norton, there was a file it said was bad, and then it couldn't delete it. I recently noticed the toolbar on Internet Explorer is not something I put there. I had downloaded the Yahoo toolbar for the Anti-Spy thing, and it's totally gone! I downloaded it again. Gone again after restarting. So last night when Norton ran, it found the file again, and I caught trojan.elitebar or something along those lines...and isn't there a trojan virus??
So, am I totally screwed? Or is there a way to fix me?

MyWeb
Date: 09/20/05
(WebDesign) Keywords: asp, web, spam, yahoo
I work for a great dot-com and everyone here is an expert in some aspect of the Web. As it happens the core techie team is much smaller than the other specialities. As a result it tends to be myself or my team who find new sites or recommend trustworthy technical resources and I'd like to widen that field a bit.
Yahoo has a system called My Web 2.0 (beta) which I'd love to merge with webdesign (this isn't cross-posted). I'm always torn when someone posts a link to a handy new site because when I'm grumpy it looks like spam but when I'm in a better mood the links are almost always useful. I want to get more webdesign recommendations but I don't want to encourage people to post links here more often! I think My Web 2.0 is the solution (er, no, I don't work for Yahoo!).
In short, I'd like to swap My Web 2.0 community invites with people on this group and with my work-based Yahoo alias. I'm Andrew and if you'd like my to invite you to the community you'll need to leave your email as a comment. I suggest either screening the comment so spam-bots can't find it or writing like 'andrew at angrysockpuppet dot com'. I wouldn't mind if people wanted to put their own sites into the system too but perhaps we could tag them "homepages" or "mysite", etc, or even "lj webdesign" as appropriate.

I am trying to set up my Outlook Express account, but my e-mail is through Yahoo!, the free one. The only way you can configure Outlook to Yahoo is through Yahoo! Plus, which is $20.
Does anyone know of any e-mail hosts that configure with Outlook without being required to upgrade for a fee???

trojan horse Dropper.Generic.AGX

(Computer Geeks) Keywords: virus, web, yahoo, google
My AVG has a scheduled scan to run at 8am every morning, it did that today and ding'ed to let me know that I had a virus. There was a trojan horse Dropper.Generic.AGX in C:/Program Files/AIM/backup/uninstall.exe —i deleted the .exe (I can just re-dl AIM again if I need the uninstaller) and just wanted to know if a.) i definately got rid of the infection and b) if anyone knew of what the virus is. ive googled, came up dry, and this is rather odd since I never get virus'. not since the sasser when I installed back in June.
any help is appreciated.
eta; ive noticed notepad.exe is running slow, when that program never does. its too small to run slow. in any case, ive noticed that for two days and figured it'd stop once i stopped downloading a torrent. never did stop lagging. dont know if that has anything to do with it.
