1. help!!

    Date: 10/17/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: css, html, database, asp, web

    I'm going freakin' insane here, and it is (of course) because of the different ways IE and Firefox display HTML and CSS.

    Here is my site:

    http://www.shifuimam.com/site.zip

    I can't post links to it, because the only Windows web server I have access to is from my university, and it's password-protected.

    There are three pages in that archive, plus all the includes and whatnot to make them display properly. browse.asp displays fine in IE and Firefox. faq.asp and category.asp, however, shift the content of the page down a bit for no explicable reason. I thought it was because of the tables on those two pages, but when I added a table to another page that was working fine, it displayed without any problems.

    Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

    Oh - the databases are also included so all the stuff displays correctly. I know some of you might tell me to not use Access, and I normally wouldn't, but my teacher in this class requested we use Access databases so that he could see our database structure more easily.

    Thanks in advance for any help provided!!

    A worm is being propogated via Instant Messengers (MSN and AOL affected).

    I received this message today:
    LOL!! http://home.earthlink.net/~xxx/picture007.com
    Real link removed for your protection.

    I downloaded the file, McAfee VirusScan 9 didn't detect a virus, but it's a good thing I ran it through multiple scanners before I ran it.

    Bottom line is, if someone sends you a link to a .exe or .com file, especially if its an unknown contact, you better damn well know what they are sending or else its most surely a virus.

  3. S.O.S.!!!

    Date: 10/21/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html, asp

    I am unfamiliar with asp but somehow i messed up this whole site I just got hired to update. I was working on the top.html include and uploaded it and it messed up the whole fitting together of the page sections. Then I put top.html back the way it was and that didn't work!
    Any ideas?

  4. XML/XSLT issue

    Date: 10/21/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: xml, asp

    I'm not sure about the XML expertise around here but I don't wanna go around to multiple groups posting this question. I'm trying to take output from a dataset that is outputted to an XML file and associate it with an XSLT to basically make a reverse table, so instead of,

    Column1Column2Column3
    Value1Value2Value3

    I want it to display as

    Column1Value1
    Column2Value2
    Column3Value3

    Putting the whole table displaying aspect aside, right now my question is how do I get the XSLT to display the actual ELEMENT NAME as opposed to just the element values? So for
    (id)101(/id)
    I want it to come out as
    id101

    The XML structure is:

    NewDataSet
      Table
        Element
      Table
    NewDataSet

    Obviously there are multiple elements. The thing about this (and why I'm even EXPLORING this) is that the XML files have dynamic tags.

    If anyone has any information as to how I would get to display this information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  5. Disable Ctrl Arrow Key

    Date: 10/22/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: asp, google

    I've got a flash file and I don't want people to be able to hold the control key and press the arrow keys to advance the movie. How can I disable these keys or how can I make it so that the flash player cannot be advanced by the actual player and only by actionscript? Both the control key and the arrow keys are used seperately in the movie, so they can't be completely disabled, only the advancing aspect of it. Nothing good on google. What I could find anyways.

    Thanks

  6. mozilla to firefox...

    Date: 10/22/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser, asp, google

    i've been a mozilla user for a while now. (before that i used netscape. (and of course before that i used ie.))
    i thorougly enjoy the tabbed browsing aspect of the browser.

    anyway, i'm trying to make the switch over to firefox, because support for mozilla is waning.

    besides not having the composer, my main complaint with mozilla is that i cannot figure out how to make it load new links on tabs in the background. i have it set to load links on new tabs in the same window... but it makes the new page over top of what i'm doing. i want it to open a tab in the background.
    i'm pretty sure it's not something having to do with the options because i have checked and double checked that, but it is possible i am missing something. if it is there, where is it?
    if it isn't something in the options, is it something i can change some other way?

    oh, and another complaint is that i can't search google just by entering stuff in the address bar and moving down to the search google option. but i've been trying to train myself to use the google search field instead, but i just don't like it.
    is there any way i can set the address bar to do google searches like mozilla does?

  7. Event Handlers Suddenly Drop in ASP.NET

    Date: 10/25/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: asp, web

    I was trained in ASP.NET with C# codebehind but my new job has me working with VB.Net. I kinda miss the structure of C#, but that's an aside. Basically a problem that I've had with both of these is that randomly, sometimes when I make changes to web forms, parts of the form (not the WHOLE thing) suddenly stop working. Like most recently I had to work with a web form that had lots of validations and hidden panels, and one day I was adding a new panel with its own options and validations and all that good stuff. Then I went to test it out, and 70% of the form just stopped working. The Validations weren't validating, and panels that should have been visible remained hidden. After going through about 2 hours of soul/sledgehammer searching I found out that the Event Handlers had magically disappeared from most of the functions. Basically the "Handles..." part of the functions disappeared, and I had to either add it manually or double click on the various functions/validations on the design view of the form. Has anyone else run into this problem or knows where this stems from? Someone at work told me that it has to do with if you copy controls from various parts of the forms to other parts, but I'm pretty sure I didn't do any of that before the form screwed up. Also, like I said, about 70% of the form just stopped working properly. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

    BTW its ASP.NET 1.1, not 2.0 with VS.NET 2003

    My concerns here are with the table, not really anything else just yet.

    All the the text, link or not, should be red at the top of the table. I feel like I've done everything correctly to enable this.

    Why is the first column pushing over so far? There's no text bumping up against the date column on the "title" side, so why is the date smashed into the column to the right of it?

    Also, any suggestions at all to help this look less cramped (though it doesn't seem like I have many options) would be appreciated. This page is going to be filled with content dynamically via asp so the table could conceivably get quite large depending on what search is run.

    Checking mostly in IE, but checked in Firefox too and similar/worse problems with the text color arise (no change to the table layout though, still date is smashed up against participants).

    Thanks!

  13. debugging in classic ASP

    Date: 11/10/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: php, database, asp

    I apologize for the semi-off-topic post but I'm not finding what I need in any other places...

    I have some legacy Classic ASP code I need to deal with. In ColdFusion and PHP I can do things like this:

    print_r( someComplexDataType )

    ...and PHP will display not only the data in that structure/query/whatever, but also the names of the colums/members in it as well. So I can get a query back from some arbitrary source, and figure out the names of the database columns returned just by calling that function. Is there a similar thing in Classic ASP? Response.write doesn't seem to work.

    thanks.

  14. Visual Studio 2005 Panels in Design Mode

    Date: 11/14/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: asp, web

    If you saw my previous inane message you know I'm working on converting an ASP.Net webform from 1.1 to 2.0, and I'm having an "issue" with viewing my page in the VS design mode. The page uses ALOT of panels that are visible/invisible depending on what you select on the form. In VS.net 2003 the design mode shows all the panels fully opened, which made design rather easy, but now I can't see any of the panels, which cuts off about 75% of the web page. Is there a setting option or viewing thing that I need to enable to allow the panels to be viewed? If you want I can post a picture of what I'm talking about, but I'd like to think my explanation is fairly straightforward. Thanks in advance.

    BTW If I find a solution before one is posted here (ie I answer my own questions) I'll commit a self-imposed ban on myself here so that I don't keep putting up stupid posts on this board. :-p

  16. Of Character Encodings

    Date: 11/18/05 (C Sharp)    Keywords: database, asp, sql, web

    I am converting a web app from ASP to ASP.net and have stumbled on an annoying problem.

    1. ASP code accepts user input and stores value in the database
    SQL field type is nvarchar(200).
    BUT the query does not use N'' to specify that the string is unicode.

    2. Value stored in the database is '陳小春'

    3. Value displayed on web page (utf8 encoding, no server side changes) is '陳小春'

    4. Actual UTF data in the database is displayed on screen as ???
    (database value: 人, display value: ?)

    5. ASP.net application using the EXACT same queries results in point 4 being displayed correctly (as japanese) but the values that were displayed correctly in the ASP app are now exactly as they are in the database.

    Please Help ... My only guess was that the ADO connection was converting the UTF in the database to Non-UTF for display in ASP and the ADO connection in .Net is preserving the Unicodeness of it.

    But i did a simple test in ASP where i selected the data, stored it in a variable and then inserted back into the database (non using N'')
    and well ... i got the exact same .... japanese was japanese the rest was garbage.

    Anyone have any ideas???

  18. Hotmail

    Date: 11/23/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: asp, web, microsoft

    I have a couple questions about Hotmail.

    First, my mother uses Hotmail's web interface, and she often gets message delay notifications containing the text "Delivery to the following recipients has been delayed." From the messages that I've been able to find in her inbox, this has happened only when she's emailing AOL users. That leads me to assume that it's a problem on AOL's end (especially since my mother uses Hotmail's pay service), but if anyone has any input or solutions, I'd be appreciative.

    Second, my mother, like I said, got a paid Hotmail account so that she could use Outlook Express to send and receive her Hotmail email. However, even though I've tried everything I can think of, I can't get OE to send mail via Hotmail's outgoing server. I get the error message "The server does not support the required HTTP methods (I'm using http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp and have checked multiple times to ensure that I have her account configured per Microsoft's instructions). Can anyone give me any suggestions? Would she do better just to have her Hotmail email forwarded to her Gmail account, which, presumably, would work just fine with OE?

    Thank you very much, in advance.

  19. Any PHP Gurus wanna answer a question for me?

    Date: 11/26/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: php, programming, mysql, browser, html, database, asp, sql

    I've done plenty of ASP.NET programming but this is my first foray into the wonderful land of PHP and I've got a question about how often you hit the database in a normal page load... basically I have tags like:

    within the front end page and listing.php goes something like

    $database = mysql_connect("localhost", "your_database_user_id", "your_database_password");
    mysql_select_db("your_database_name", $database);

    switch($type){
    	case 'thumbnail':
    		header("Content-type: image/jpeg"); // act as a jpg file to browser
    		$query = "SELECT thumbnail
    			FROM your_table
    			WHERE id = $id";
    		$result = mysql_query($query, $database);

    		$row = mysql_fetch_array($result);
    		$jpg = $row["thumbnail"];
    		echo $jpg;
    		break;
    	case 'address':
    		header("Content-type: text/html"); // act as an html file to browser
    		$query = "SELECT address
    			FROM your_table
    			WHERE id = $id";
    		$result = mysql_query($query, $database);

    		$row = mysql_fetch_array($result);
    		$address = $row["address"];
    		echo $address;
    		break;
    }

    Now if I understand this correctly, anytime the parser hits a tag (or w/e) it will connect to and select from the database. So on a page with 5 tags that pull from listings.php, the scripts will connect to, select from and disconnect from the database 5 times right? Is this is proper way to do things? It kinda makes me uncomfortable to make so many database hits but this seems to be the average way php developers do it.
