  2. X Posted - SORRY!

    Date: 08/16/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: browser

    Okay, when I used to open my browser, my status bar was always there. Now it has disapeared. I had to keep on manually clicking the "Status bar" in the "view" drop down to see it. Is there anyway to always keep the status bar on? People were using my computer today and somehow now the status won't stay on.

    I'm sorry, I'm not computer smart at all, and I was just hoping that someone could help me.

  3. Take Your Firefox To The Beauty Parlor

    Date: 08/16/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser, web

    If you are tired of looking at your same antiquated and dull-looking Firefox; please don't switch to another browser. Just add cosmetics and an imaginative attitude. Your creation: a smooth-graded-silver color browser with cute rounded corners for URL and search bars. Add to that a note taking extension with advanced features and the ability to iconify your menus and pop ups. Now you'll love to take Firefox for a ride with flying colors.

    If you want all of the above, this is your lucky day. I just found this web page owned by Mauro Bartocelli who developed the Silver Skin theme for Firefox. Kindly click the following URL and send your browser to the beauty parlor:

    I truly hope you like it.

    Cheers,

    Hey guys, this time I have a question not about my computer but my brothers.

    Lately, it has been randomly shutting down. When it does, the entire screen goes black and the tower...sings? It plays 4 deep notes...Do sol Do Sol if anyone has studied Solfage.

    He had a host of Adware and 4 trojans, all of which have been removed but the problem persists.

    Not that I have any idea what it means, but here is the logfile from Hijack This!.

    I need to open a new window on the submission of a form (client request) where the results go in the new window. However, I want to drop all the browser menus and bars.

    Any ideas how to do both? (am also trying to write one window function for variosu pages. (Client request).

    function openWindow(url, name) {
    if (name == "build"){
    var param = 'width=640,height=480,left=50,top=0';

    if (name == "help"){
    param = 'width=640,height=480,left=30,top=0';
    }

  6. Yahoo's Music LAUNCHCast and Mozilla's Firefox Don't Mix

    Date: 08/19/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser, web, yahoo

    Yesterday I tried to listen to a customized Yahoo radio station under the category of Yahoo Music LAUNCHcast. Probably you have also seen this ad all over Yahoo's web pages. They are copycatting, Apple's iTunes business model of selling or subscribing to music service over the Internet. They even designed a pretty looking music player named the Yahoo Music Engine. Well, to continue my sad story, I could not connect to "any" of their radio station. Instead, I got the following message: Error: Sorry, we do not support Netscape on the Windows platform. Error code 25-0.

    Did I get the message right? Are Netscape's browsers being discriminated here? Has this happened to you? and if it has, what do you think? I felt rejected because I was using Firefox; in my opinion, the best web browser around.

    I'm not happy, to put it mildly. I wrote them an e-mail expressing my disappointment, but as of this moment, no one has answered from Yahoo's Customer Service Department.

    Regards,

    Omar.-

  7. layout not aligning right

    Date: 08/20/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, web

    Hi, I built an online portfolio using tables and it looks fine on Internet Explorer, but it doesn't align right with the background on Firefox. I have tried many different things to make it work right in both browsers, but to no avail.

    The url to my site is http://www.umich.edu/~gujacq. Could anyone check my coding and help me with this problem? It's really getting on my nerves since 1) I don't even know what's causing the problem and 2) I don't know how to fix it.

    (I'm probably going to crosspost this in several other web design communities, so sorry if this'll seem repetitive to some of you.)

    Date: 08/26/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser, linux

    Hello,

    I hope you can help me with a problem. :) I just upgraded to Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.8) Gecko/20050813 Firefox/1.0.4 (Debian package 1.0.4-2sarge2), through the (for Debian) normal apt-get sequence. But now 'close tab' seems to equal 'close Firefox', which seriously affects my browsing experience (this is the third time I try to get this posted, I accidently closed the browser twice).

    Is there something I can do except wait for a new update?

  13. Thunderbird Goes To College

    Date: 08/27/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: rss, browser, xml

    A few days ago, I shared in this community, an article about the introduction of Firefox to several thousand students in France in an effort to promote open source computer applications. It was an excellent opportunity to expose Firefox to high school students and their parents. When they finally go to college, Firefox would be their most probable default browser.

    Today, I ran across another interesting entry from The Hatchet, an independent student on-line newspaper from the University of Chicago. The students commented, that "while Thunderbird isn't anything new - it's been available for download in one form or another since December - it's now starting to get major attention. In April, Harvard University made a customized version available to students and faculty, and in May, New York University's Stern School of Business started using the program. This fall the University of Chicago will distribute Thunderbird to students."

    Thunderbird is now being used by top notch U.S. Universities. Their students and faculty members are excited about:

    * Management of multiple e-mail accounts
    * Customization features like themes, plug-ins and extensions
    * Live Bookmarks using RSS feeds

    This is what they wrote about Live Bookmarks and RSS feeds:

    "On the left side of the screen, along with a list of your e-mail folders, you can create a list of your favorite news sources along with their headlines. Today, most blogs and online news services, including The Hatchet, offer RSS feeds that allow you to subscribe to their news and receive news on your computer as soon as it's published or posted online. The benefit of such a system is that you get all your headlines in one place as opposed to jumping all over the Internet."

    "In my Thunderbird client, I have a list of my news sources - the Houston Chronicle sports section, The Washington Post Metro section, and the blog Wonkette, to name a few, above a list of my e-mail folders. Each headline appears as a new message in a folder named for the news source - click on a headline and the story is opened in the message window."

    To access your favorite news sources via Thunderbird, just go to a news site, find the orange button labeled RSS or XML, right click, and select "copy link location" or "copy shortcut," and paste it into your news management section."

    The student's ended their on-line newspaper with these very encouraging words; " Mozilla Thunderbird can help simplify your life - there's no reason not to download this program." I feel so proud to see that Firefox and Thunderbird are surfacing in the educational community. Thunderbird is now in college.

    Dear group

    Last week,a friend of my mine doing her Doctorate came home and while she was here for two some days she tried to hook her Mac notebook to my windows desktop for some internet connection. She had this wireless card and so she did some changes to my windows setting so that that her Mac could receive signals from the Windows machine which was running this internet.

    Now she is gone and though my internet still works, when i go to windows update page from tools, windows update in IE, the browser says " Sorry no update for Mac pc". Could anybody tell me whats wrong. Hope i made my self clear. If you need any clarification please do not hesitate to ask me.

  17. Firefox Accepted by Department for Work & Pensions (DWP)

    Date: 08/29/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: software, browser, web

    Firefox continues to make inroads in Europe. In a recent article written by Paula Demarzio and published by ABC Money in the United Kingdom, The Department for Work & Pensions (DWP) in London has awakened to the popularity of Mozilla's Firefox web browser and has vowed to make its websites "Firefox friendly." The DWP also said that it would try to make its sites compatible to as many browsers as possible.

    DWP is not the only organization, which has had to work towards making sites more compatible to a variety of browsers including Firefox and Opera. With the increasing market share of browsers based on open source software, many organizations are being forced to upgrade their sites. Software Company AutoDesk announced on Thursday that it was working towards Firefox support for MapGuide, "We consider Firefox support to be essential and are working on it for the next version of MapGuide," an AutoDesk spokesman commented.

    Date: 08/29/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, web

    Hi all. My coworkers want to use Univers for our company's web site. That is definitely impossible for browsers, yada yada. Isn't it Helvetica Condensed that ends up looking like Univers or Trade Gothic but can still be read by Mac and PC browsers? Please inform.

    Thanks.
