Recent problem with GIF's
Date: 06/23/06
(Computer Help) Keywords: browser
I just noticed this last tonight, but now whenever i'm looking at .gif icons or avatars, the picture is very grainy and pixel-ilated. So the picture is not blending together well.
I first noticed this when looking at my Forums avatars, and then on everyone else's avatars that are .gif's. I then went through my Photobucket and it's all the same. All my Gif's are like retarded looking now; but it seems to only be affecting the Gif's.
I've posted my problem on 3 other sites (2 of my forums, and my LJ) and I've heard that it's something about DLL files or something, but i'm not 100% sure about that.
The only thing i've installed or re-installed in the timespan that this all started to happen was the game "Red Alert 2". I uninstalled the game after playing a few rounds and getting bored with it quickly, and noticed some of the pictures (which I now assume to be GIF's) looking weird, but everything else was fine until last night. I cleared the Cache for my Firefox browser and then I immeditly noticed the problem.
Any idea on what's wrong with my computer, and how to fix it?
The worst part is, I have 2 College Research Papers that I need to get done, and all I can think about is 'Why is my computer screwing up?"
Oh, and this has happened to my old computer very long ago. However, this computer that now has the problem is only a year and a half old.
I am using Windows XP, and my old computer was Windows 98.

Google is massively pushing its web browser toolbar everywhere around the world. Google has agreed to pay a “significant amount” to have Google toolbar bundled with select Adobe downloads.
Initially it will downloaded with the popular and free Shockwave multimedia player, replacing current Yahoo Toolbar option. I am less than impressed with recent Yahoo products like [...]

HELP: transferring database files into another computer
Date: 06/28/06
(MySQL Communtiy) Keywords: mysql, browser, database, sql
My friends (team-members) and I are working on a Final Year Project, and we have a problem with mySQL!
My team member has a complete database of our project, but i'd like to copy her database into my laptop and work from there too.
I've copied the folder 'fyp' (C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.0\data\fyp) into the same directory in my laptop.
The following happened:
1. The database 'fyp' showed in mySQL query browser.
2. 'could not fetch columns' error appeared under this database in mySQL query browser.

3. Under "Catalogs" in mySQL administrator, the schemata 'fyp' is there, but it doesnt show its tables when i clicked on it.
DID I MISS OUT ANY FILES? DO I HAVE TO COPY ANY OTHER FILES OTHER THAN THE DATABASE 'FYP' FOLDER?
Kindly advise!
Thanks!
With love,
the mySQL noob. =/

More blocked windows issues
Date: 06/29/06
(Javascript Community) Keywords: browser, html, java, security, yahoo, google
Last week I posted about a guy I work for is not getting popup windows on XP IE... we wrote it off for the meantime but I am back trying to figure out why he is not able to open windows via javascript.
One window is opening, but I also noticed while visiting my PM, that the JS to remove the location bars, menus, etc so that its just a simple window seem to fail. He is getting a full blown window.
Anyone have any idea why that would fail? Could it have anything to do with his browser security levels? He also has these toolbars: Google, Yahoo, MSN, LInkedin, Linkman.
[updated] OK - it looks like the two windows that are opening are forms that are submitted via Javascript or that the window is opening via HTML target=
... So he's browser is definitely blocking the new window JS. Based on a suggestion from the last post I found this page

Photoshop and text
Date: 07/01/06
(WebDesign) Keywords: browser, web
Obviously, Photoshop is terrible when it comes to text handling. This is especially true when it comes to creating client comps for web. The text on the comp, if it is generated in PS, is far inferior to what it will look like in the browser.
I have a clumsy method or two for generating comps with text that looks a more or less like the finished product. But I have known for a long time that I needed to find a more efficient way to deal with this issue.
So, my question is, how do you deal with it? Do you set the text in illustrator or just make browser comps? Perhaps I should just do my comps in code but I am looking for the fastest possible solution.
Thanks in advance for those who answer my question.

Using Opera 9 to update my Website
Date: 07/04/06
(HTML Help) Keywords: browser, html, web
I just tried to update my website using Opera 9 as my default browser. Whenever I try to close out and save all of the updates, I DO NOT get the confirmation notice that I am about to update my site and, consequently, the changes do not "take". Can you not update HTML with Opera as your default browser? Any help appreciated.

Positioning div at bottom of another div
Date: 07/06/06
(WebDesign) Keywords: browser
I'm working on this site for a friend: http://www.11oh1.net/kamel
She wants the image of the restaurant and the contact info to always be positioned at the bottom of the content area. I can do this by fooling with the top margin but that doesn't work so well as the browser is resized.
What would be the best way to go about this?

Auto-Write script for splash page
Date: 07/15/06
(WebDesign) Keywords: browser, java
I want to add a splash page to my site that displays a users IP address, browser, resolution & color depth, and potentially their name address (like ppp-69-223-177-96.dsl.wotnoh.ameritech.net)
I know I need to figure out how to detect these variables and accordingly display them in the browser. However I don't want it to just display on screen, I'd like it to scroll up, to appear similar to the scene in the Matrix early on when Neo is asleep on his PC. A similar page can be found here but the information displayed is static.
At one point I remember seeing a javascript that would do everything I want, from automatically pulling user info and displaying it and auto-writing it.
Any suggestions or places to look would be appreciated.

2 issues
Date: 07/16/06
(Computer Help) Keywords: browser, virus, google
i have 2 unrelated questions.
the first one: my internet browsers on my desktop computer will not access the internet. i guess that isn't completely true, sometimes they do and then out of of the blue they won't, and i will get an "unable to connect to server" message, or something like that telling me i have no internet connection. i have to reboot to "fix" it. i figure the problem has nothing to so with ISP/Internet connection because while my browsers won't bring up pages, i can still stay on my messengers and dl stuff off soulseek and bittorrent, and other various programs can access the net to update (plus the fact that rebooting always fixes it). I have used both IE and Firefox and i have also scanned for viruses with norton anti virus corporate ed, checked for spy ware with spybot s&d, ad aware, and crap cleaner (and i updated all programs before using). I have checked my firewall settings (zone alarm) and i also checked all the processes running on my computer and only one i couldn't find using google (E_FATI99AA.exe). So i was wondering what i should try next.
the second questions: my laptop has a crack in it. when closed the crack is on top, it is slowly growing but it is still pretty small, so i wondering what i might use to seal it up and prevent it from getting any larger.

IE not displaying a table correctly
Date: 07/17/06
(WebDesign) Keywords: browser
I'm working on this site:
http://feelgoodcars.com/site/
And I'm using tables to display the links across the top. I thought this would be a bullet-proof way to get the site to display properly in all browsers. But for some reason, IE will mis-align the links at the top - they're images and I've checked that they are sliced correctly. They should all be the same size but IE isn't lining them up properly??
Can someone help me figure out what's wrong? I'm going nuts here.
TIA.
(x-posted)
Edit: should mention that this is IE on the PC that's not working properly... looks fine in Mac IE.
