1. Opera Fixes IDN Spoofing Bug

Date: 01/01/70 (Webmaster View)    Keywords: browser, security, web

Opera released the second Beta version of its next browser (8.0 Beta 2). It includes an answer to the recent security debate over Web site spoofing.

    Download Opera (8.0 Beta 2)

Opera has created a whitelist of safe Top-Level Domains for IDN. TLDs are considered safe if they have implemented anti-homographic character policies or otherwise limited the available set of characters to prevent spoofing. Current whitelist contains .no, .jp, .de, .se, .kr, .tw, .cn, .at, .dk, .ch and .li. List is updated automatically in the Opera version check. Domain names from other top-level domains that contain characters outside Latin 1 will be displayed in punycode.

What else to look for in Opera's Beta 2:

    • Easier customization and skinning
    • Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP) verifies that the certificate has not been revoked by the certificate authorities
    • Atom newsfeeds

  3. Help Removing EliteBar

Date: 03/05/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: software, browser, spyware, microsoft

I know you guys get request like this all the time, but any help is appreciated. My computer is really driving me nuts.

So, over the past week it seems I've gotten some nasty, impossible to remove spyware, causing a multitude of pop-ups on my computer. I always use Mozilla Firefox, but the other memebers of the house still use Explorer, so I know that's probably part of the problem.

I've used Spyware Doctor, Ad-Adware and Scan Spyware, but none of them seem to be able to delete something called EliteBar, which I've read causes obnoxious pop-ups amongst other things. They are all able to detect it and try to delete it, but when I restart my computer, it's back. Under the cut is my Hijack This log. I'm not very computer literate, so clear, step-by-step instructions would be great, but any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

  6. I'm New! Welcome Me!

    Date: 03/09/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser

I just got the whole Firefox/Mozilla thang when I heard that they have tabbed windows now. Whoop!

Anywho, here is my problem. My fiancee replied to a post while I was on LJ and just clicked to post under his name without signing out. No big deal, except now whenever I try to comment it keeps his name in the field and automatically tries to post it like that, instead of posting as the logged in user. What gives?

I'm also a GMail user and when I click "Reply at page" to post a comment it opens an entirely new window, even though I have it set in the options to open links in a new tab in the most recent window.

    Any ideas?

I hope I'm not being repetitive, I'm going to scroll through + read now...

(This is all new to me, I've been using Avant Browser for roughly two years now, I loved the tabbed windows!)

    Thanks!

  7. Kojo Nnamdi Show publicitiy

Date: 03/09/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: php, browser, security, web

I know this isn't totally an advocacy group, but I think some of you might enjoy seeing the publicity that moz and firefox are getting. The Kojo Nnamdi show, on WAMU-FM
(Howard University PBS radio) had a show on browsers today, and what I was able to catch of it sounded pretty positive to firefox. For a while they'll have a stream up on their web site: (updated edit: seems they're up for quite a while, the archive is back to 2003).

    http://www.wamu.org/programs/kn/index.php

The Kojo Nnamdi show is always pretty interesting. Glad I found out about it. Too bad it wasn't in time for the show to post here so folks could call in or email. :( It aired Tuesday at 12.06 hours Eastern US time. On air were guests columnist Mark Kelner from the Washington Times (bleh ..to the paper not the columnist) and Alan Paller, research director of The Sans Institue (computer security).

And if folks really don't want these kinds of posts, let me know. :)

  8. jpeg / pjpeg

Date: 03/09/05 (PHP Community)    Keywords: browser

So I have this program that uploads 4 pictures and some text. I have an array of the image types I support, image/jpg, image/jpeg. I test each images type from $_FILES against my array if its good I let it through if not, I print an error to the screen. Pretty simple.
So along comes my client, she tries to add her pictures and my program throws up the error saying that, pjpeg is not a supported file type. Which is exactly what it is supposed to do. So she sends me the images and I upload them without a problem. So I send the images back to her and tell her to upload them again. She again gets the pjpeg error.
So I do some searching and figure out that pjpeg is a progressive jpeg, yeah I know a little slow on the uptake. So I add the file type to my array and we try again.

So my question is, how are the files being converted, AOL? I send them by email to her, she saves them to her my_documents folder and then uploads from there, with out going through an image editor. She uses AOL for her email and a few people have told me that AOL screws around with your images in email and the browser.

Anyone else had to deal with this?

  11. Relevancy and Context in Web Pages with CSS2 and PHP

Date: 03/12/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, browser, css, html, sql, web

Hi all. This will be my first post to the community, so before anything I'd just like to say how educational its been reading your posts all this time. Now then, here's my contribution.

I've recently been playing with what I think is an interesting technique for adding relevancy and context to my pages. Basically, I embed a small, invisible message within the HTML of a page or within the link to that page which is only visible to people who follow special links. This enables me to embed certain so-called "relevancy messages" on the destination page of a link that helps keep visitors oriented when browsing through my site. (This is exceptionally beneficial when back-linking to old blog posts!)

A much more detailed explanation of what I'm talking about is on my site. A brief explanation of what I first did is this:

    1. When I write links that reference my old pages, I go back to those old pages and insert a named anchor (or tag the element with an id to reference in my link with a fragment identifier).

    2. I add a title to that element so I can hide it within the HTML for visitors who browse normally, but show it to visitors who follow links to that fragment.

    3. I've added a style rule in my pages to display that title text before the fragment only for visitors who follow the special links, specifically, *:target::before { content: attr(title); }

(See an example in action on my test pages.)

This means when visitors click on a link to a fragment within a page, they see a clear, short message explaining its relevance. Especially on long pages where my link only references a small part of it, this is an enormous enhancement to usability because it ensures a smooth transition of context between one page and the next. Coupled with helpful title text on the source link itself, it can help create an extremely smooth yet still unobtrusive browsing experience.

As an extension and major enhancement, I've also been experimenting with "dynamic relevancy messages" as a sort of mini-API to allow anyone to include their own relevancy message into my pages when they link to me. The crux of this technique uses a variable within a GET query-string to plug into the above CSS content-before rule.

So what do you think about this technique? Useless? Great? Superfluous? All feedback welcome.

I'd be especially interested to hear from web accessibility gurus who can test the accessibility of this technique and PHP gurus who can help break my site by using XSS attacks for the dynamically generated CSS rule. As I'm somewhat of a novice in that area (that is XSS in the context of CSS, since it's usually an HTML/SQL thing), I'd appreciate it if you can help me fortify my defenses against what is potentially a very obvious attack vector on my site now.

    Thanks for your time. :)

(Oh yeah, and, um, you gotta use Firefox or another CSS2-compliant browser such as Safari, or a recent version of Netscape, or Mozilla in order for the CSS to work, obviously. It won't work with any version of Internet Explorer or Opera. Sorry.)

  12. Just a couple of random questions.

Date: 03/14/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: browser, web

People have always been praising the glory that is Firefox, and I have seen from screencaps that people have edited that blank bar (well mine is blank now anyway) under the address bar to have things in there, like programs bookmarks and even Mozilla options like deepest sender.   Since I am new to the world of Mozilla, could anyone tell me how?

Also, sometimes whenever my browser (usually I.e5) cannot find a page it doesn’t come up with the usual standard I.e. “page cannot be found” page, but a website called “insta-finder” is there anyway I can block this site? It’s really annoying.

    IE7 Details Emerge
Posted by timothy on Tuesday March 15, @06:38PM

Varg Vikernes writes "Microsoft Watch has a story about new features we can expect in IE7 (code named 'Rincon') which they gathered through Microsoft's key partners. Apparently we can expect 32 bit PNG support, native IDN support, new functionality that will simplify printing from inside IE and, of course, tabbed browsing. The new browser also will likely include a built-in news aggregator. Apparently an important factor is security."

    And from the article:
Partner sources say Microsoft is wavering on the extent to which it plans to support CSS2 with IE 7.0. Developers have been clamoring for Microsoft to update its CSS support to support the latest W3C standards for years. But Microsoft is leaning toward adding some additional CSS2 support to IE 7.0, but not embracing the standard in its entirety, partners say.

What do you guys think? I won't trade my firefox for anything in the world, but it would be great to see css standards supported on IE7.

  15. displaying Japanese from mysql with php?

Date: 03/17/05 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, mysql, browser, database, sql, web

Hi, thanks in advance for any advice.

I am working on a website on my PC, and I don't know anything about servers but I wanted to develop locally, so I am using a WAMP package. I would like the site to be able to display database entries from mysql that are in Japanese, but when I call them I just see question marks instead of the Japanese (using various browsers and encoding options). I can, however, just echo Japanese text in the php file and it will display properly. Also, in phpmyadmin where I am creating the database the Japanese is displaying correctly.

I don't know if it's a problem with the server, mysql, or the script, so I don't even know where to start. I have tried it with the db, table and fields collated in both sjis_japanese_ci and utf8_unicode_ci, with the same results.

Does anyone know what the problem could be? Thanks!

  20. css / div / php / firefox issues.

Date: 03/19/05 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, browser, css, web

HI there. I'm having major troubles, and headaches, over a new layout I want for my website.

Pure css gave me a nightmare so I decided to use PHP includes, and that way have my site easier to overhaul each time I got bored.
Now, I've not had anything to do with PHP before, and rather than encode each piece by hand, I just made my headers, and footers, and renamed the content of each page whatever.php
(please don't point and laugh at me, I have no idea what I'm doing with PHP ...)

My test page shows up perfectly in IE, but there is only a small space for the menu in Firefox.
I have tried everything from resizing divs, taking divs out, etc etc and nothing has worked.

I want a site with no tables, and no frames that is cross-browser compatible.

    Test page is here:
    http://www.tehsheepie.com/test/donna.php

    css here:
    http://www.tehsheepie.com/test/stylesheet.css

    Header.php reads as such:

I'm going to lose my mind soon, the whole idea of me forsaking my beloved frames layout was to become more user-friendly.
What the heck am I doing wrong? :(
    Any suggestions are muchly appreciated.
I use Firefox myself, and I'd hate to have to force people to view my page in IE ...
