  2. Buffer overflow?

    Date: 12/09/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: browser, virus, spyware

    I use McAfee and lately I have been getting this notice a LOT. I tried running a scan for virus and spyware. (came up clean) I also deleted my temp net files. It seems to pop up randomly. I'm not even connected to the net or have any programs running when it comes up sometimes. Can anyone tell me what is causing this and how I can stop/fix it? I know what a buffer overflow is (when a program writes information a buffer other than the memory space allocated for it) but I don't know why it is happening or how to fix it.

    I have a dell dimension and using windows XP. I use firefox usually but still have IE has the default browser.

    Thank you in advance!

  3. help! please?

    Date: 12/09/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, css, html

    I am attempting to create my very first TABLELESS layout (YAY!)
    It's about time.

    So, I've run into a snag. Already.
    The background image will fit wonderfully into the top left corner of the layout, which is great. I wanted to try the same background image as the background of the image I'm using.
    There is a gap. No matter what options I set, there is always this stupid gap between the top of the div and the top of the window.

    To show what I'm talking about, see this image:
    http://shikkaba.deviantart.com/art/blarg-71714027

    You'll see a bit of the finger in the background, repeated.
    That's the one set as the body background. The one I wanted to use was the one overtop of it, the one in the menu div. I'll be getting rid of the body one afterwards if I get this to work.
    This shows up this way in all browsers on my system, and I have 6 different ones so far, so hey.

    The numbers are to be ignored. I know what I'm doing with those. They're just already in place for what I'm doing and just so happen to be in the div I'm talking about.

    Here's the html:

    http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

    http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

    Untitled Document

    Here's the CSS:

    body

    {

    margin: 0px;

    z-index: 0;

    background-color: #ffffff;

    background: url(../images/side-film.gif);

    background-repeat: no-repeat;

    }

    #bottom_fade {

    width: 1000px;

    height: 200px;

    z-index: 99;

    position: fixed;

    bottom: 0%;

    background-image: url("../images/bottom-fade.png");

    background-repeat: repeat-y;

    }

    #menu {

    list-style: none;

    padding: 0;

    margin: 0;

    width: 220px;

    height: 1670px;

    background: url(../images/side-film.gif);

    background-repeat: no-repeat;

    position: relative;

    }

    #menu span {

    display: none;

    position: absolute;

    }

    Thank you for your help!

    (x-posted)

    EDIT: FIXED!!! I figured out that one of the elements inside the DIV I'd made "relative" instead of "absolute" so it was causing a problem in apparently all browsers except IE (which I do have, but on Parallels, so I hadn't tried it yet) Thanks to all who tried to help. I really appreciate it!

  4. Dream Weaver Issues

    Date: 12/11/07 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, browser, css, html

    Hello,

    Up till recently, the company I work at has built PHP applications by first writing static HTML pages from scratch and then rigging them up with enough PHP code to satisfy the short-term requirements of the project. This is fine for very small projects, but it just doesn't scale well. Up until I arrived at the company, all HTML/CSS and PHP was written in Dream Weaver, and all applications were built to display properly in Dream Weaver as well as in a browser.

    I am trying to adopt the use of PHP MVC frameworks, but I am running into problems with Dream Weaver. Dream Weaver practically expects to be working on a somewhat primitive architecture where the URL structure of a site is directly derived from the directory structure of the files on the filesystem.

    Has anyone here successfully configured Dream Weaver to play nicely with Cake, Symfony, or any other frameworks that make heavy use of URL rewriting and dynamically assembled pages?

    Thanks

  5. the red dot of doom

    Date: 12/12/07 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser

    Ever since upgrading to the newest version of firefox, I will get the "red dot of doom" as graphic files are loading, instead of the regular placeholder graphic that browsers, including firefox, usually have.

    In the past, this meant that the cache was full. Once you emptied it and restarted firefox, everything would be fine.

    Now, it seems to show up arbitrarily. My cache will be nowhere near full (4 MB with a 150 MB limit.) However, if I exit out of firefox and start it back up again, it is fine.

    Has anyone else been having this problem? (I'm on windows xp sp2) I'm also using the noscript and download helper add-ons.

    Date: 12/23/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, web, linux, google

    I started re-working my website for the new year, I gave in and started using Flash. And I like it - it's a pretty nifty thing.

    Problem is, I need my Flash animations to be transparent using the 'wmode=transparent' parameter, otherwise they float right above the text and block out everything. This isn't a problem in IE6 (or any other browser I've tested) but in Firefox it is impossible to use the Flash navigation. In Linux it does even stranger things.

    Does anyone know of a workaround for this? I've googled around to no avail. I've tried z-indexing, but that doesn't work.

    If it's just a bug in Firefox I'll just let it go and Firefox users can suck it up :P

    Link: the site is here functional, not fully complete yet. IE7 does some wonky things, but I'm working on that.

  10. Recommendations please

    Date: 01/04/08 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: browser

    Hey, I am looking for recommendations for online games. Something free. Something similar to a game I used to play called Ragnarok Online. Is it still around and free?. I liked that it was rather light on bandwidth and graphics. It had cute 2D graphics I also used to play Kings of Chaos and Kingdom of Loathing but those became difficult if I didn't log in at least once a day. As it is, I can do the online game thing maybe 2-3 times a week, sometimes as little as once a week for a few hours at a time. So a game where I can succeed on my own for the most part would be good. Also, something where I can develop skills in game and use those skills to make money AKA tailoring or Archery or such like in EQ. I prefer immersible environments like Ragnarok over browser based game like Kings of Chaos. Any recommendations please?

    Date: 01/06/08 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, browser, css, java, security

    One of my sites has a Verisign certificate installed for HTTPS serving. HTTPS is configured and works fine, except for this problem.

    Some pages have the proper lock & domain name in the lower right, other pages have a warning lock. Both pages are hosted with the same domain. Both pages are accessed via https://domain.net.

    Secure
    https://domain.net/subfolder/index.php

    "Contains unauthenticated content"
    https://domain.net/index.php

    What I've done so far is to view source through my browser on the second page. Then I did alt-F and searched for http://. I found no instances of http:// on the page.

    I also double clicked the lock on the second page, which brings up Firefox's Page Info window. On the Security tab there is a warning under Technical Details saying "Connection Partially Encrypted. Parts of the page you are viewing were not encrypted before being transmitted over the internet. Information sent over the Internet without encryption can be seen by other people in transit" On the Media tab several images are listed, all of which are served over https://.

    There are two CSS and one Javascript includes on the second page - I confirmed that no http:// content is located in any of these.

    Edit
    IE displays a secure lock on the second page:

  13. Flex 2 Builder not...building.

    Date: 01/08/08 (Web Development)    Keywords: browser, xml

    Rather urgent need here:
    I'm building an application with Flex 2 Builder and about halfway through today's work, the changes stopped coming through to the SWF files. The MXML and associated components are in place, the changes are saving, no errors are coming up but no changes will show when I RUN the application.

    I'm making the changes directly to the default application, I've Cleaned the project, restarted everything, cleared all private data from all browsers, even viewed the SWF files directly - with no result. I've had to plug ahead making changes, but with little assurance that they're functioning as they should.

    Anyone encountered this before or have any idea how to deal with it?
    Even ideas on how similar issues might be dealt with in other eclipse-related programs or hell, any environment would be most appreciated!

    The same problem occurs with my homemade RSS feed at http://eye.thelovebug.org/rss.php

  17. CSS/Dreamweaver help

    Date: 01/18/08 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, css, html, web

    Hey everyone, this is my first post here. I'm redesigning my website, or I guess just trying to "upgrade" it. I'm going from all HTML to CSS/HTML, and I've run into a problem.

    For some reason my external stylesheet isn't working. At least, it's not changing anything in the design view mode in dreamweaver. This is all i have on my style sheet so far. the sheet is named style.css:

    /* CSS Document */

    body,td,th {
    font-size: 12px;
    color: #999999;
    }
    body {
    background-color: #faf4da;
    background-image: url(newbackgrounds.jpg);
    background-repeat: repeat-y;
    background-position:center;
    margin-left: 0px;
    margin-top: 0px;
    margin-right: 0px;
    margin-bottom: 0px;
    }

    So, it should show the bg color as well as the background image, right? this is what the code looks like in html:

    <*head>
    <*meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1" />
    <*meta http-equiv="Content-Style-Type" content="text/css" />

    <*meta name="Keywords" content="Vivien Leigh, Laurence Olivier, GWTW, Gone with the Wind, Pretty, A Streetcar Named Desire, Hamlet, Wuthering Heights, Waterloo Bridge, Classic Film, Photography, Vogue" />

    <*meta name="Author" content="Kendra" />
    <*meta name="Copyright" content="©2007 by Kendra. All rights reserved." />

    <*link rel="stylesheet" href="http://www.vivandlarry.com/css/style.css" type="text/css" /*> (this isn't actually bold, I just made it that way to point out where i linked the style sheet for the purpose of getting help on this question)

    <*title>Viv and Larry {dot} com | a Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier Tribute | v2.0 | Anything Goes

    Am I doing something wrong? I've been looking at other site's page sources, and it appears the same as what i posted above, so I'm confused as to why nothing is showing up on my site, even when i preview it in a browser, it's just a blank page.

    any help would be appreciated. thanks!

  18. Opera as non-SSL e-mail client

    Date: 01/18/08 (Opera Browser)    Keywords: browser, database, web, yahoo

    Ever since I first installed Opera I've used it as my default e-mail client as well as my default browser, but recently I had to switch ISPs to (ick) AT&T Yahoo, and their e-mail service requires e-mail clients to be SSL compliant, while Opera uses TLS instead (oh, the curse of being ahead of the curve!) Ideally, there'd be a way I could continue to use Opera as my e-mail client, but while I've heard that TLS can transform itself into SSL3 if necessary, I'm utterly non-geek and would have no idea how to make it do this.

    I could use SSL-compliant Mozilla Thunderbird, but, while it's not the abomination Outlook Express is, I've tried it before and found it a bit clunky, and annoying to configure, so I would only use it as a last resort.

    Another alternative I've found would be to try an e-mail client called Courier which, while not SSL compliant itself, can be configured to work with an open source program called Stunnel which, as I understand it (meaning very, very dimly), would punk Yahoo's POP and SMTP servers and make them think I was using an SSL compliant e-mail client. I do like the description Courier gives of itself, but I've not yet tried it so I don't know if I'd really find it usable.

    Why, you may be asking, would I not simply use Stunnel with Opera directly instead of going through Courier? Well, I would, but I can't find anything on Opera's website (or on Stunnel's website) saying that Opera is compatible with Stunnel... but there's a nice little section of the Opera database that tells how to configure Opera to work with Courier, and a nice (though not so little) section on Courier's website that tells how to configure Courier for use with Stunnel. In other words, if I run as fast as I can I might be able to stay somewhere in the vicinity of the same place.

    Anyway, what I'd like to know is:

    1) Has anybody ever used Stunnel (or maybe something like it) with Opera and, if so, did disaster ensue?
    2) Has anybody ever used Courier, with or without Opera and, if so, is Courier as good as it looks from its self-description?
    3) Has anybody got a suggestion for any other alternatives, so I don't end up having to use Thudderbird?

  19. Weird problem

    Date: 01/26/08 (Computer Help)    Keywords: browser

    Whenever I click a link, I have to click on it five or six times (sometimes up to ten) for the link to actually register having been clicked on (i.e. make the little hourglass appear). It also happens when I click icons on my computer--I had to double-click the Firefox icon four times to actually open up the browser. This also occurs when trying to place the cursor where I want it, to type something, and choosing items from drop-down menus. It's starting to drive me crazy. I've restarted the computer and disconnected/reconnected my cable modem, to no avail. So basically the mouse is acting all wonky, not registering the first few times I click things--either that, or the computer doesn't "know" when links and icons are being clicked--and I don't know what's causing it or how to fix it.

    EDIT: Huh, it seems to be working now. Must have just been a temporary thing. I'll edit again if it starts doing it again.
