I got a computer from a friend and have a windwos 2000 CD. The computer currently has XP but keeps popping up the old username and what not. It wouldn't be such an issue if it McAfee Privacy didn't keep me from getting online.
My question is this:
Can I override the McAfee privacy without having to install 2000 and if I can't, is there a step by step link somewhere on the internet to do this?

I have a Lemel notebook computer, and recently it's been going haywire. There's a built-in wireless card, but for a few days I haven't been able to connect to my home's wireless internet connection. It's driving me nuts, because my sister, who uses a Dell laptop, can connect perfectly fine. I can use an LAN connection, but the wireless just won't connect. I checked the settings, and it has Windows automatically configure the Internet, and it's supposed to automatically connect to one or two networks. The problem is that it can't seem to find those networks.
I did try the repair function, and the repair worked until it tried to connect; then it said that it couldn't complete the repairing thing because it couldn't connect.
Is there any advice on what this could be? Is it a problem with the wireless card?

That didn't work

I still need help with the computer that a friend gave me before mine dies. It's on XP and it thinks there's no modem. It doesn't even work with trying to install my modem from this computer that I KNOW works or else I wouldn't be connected right now. Someone told me to run services.msc but the plug & play is already set to automatic and the device manager is still empty. There's just no way to get a list of the devices to see why it won't accept a modem. When my friend used the computer she never had a problem getting online through dial-up, and it worked for her when she gave it to me but it just does NOT work for me. I really need to be able to get online and I don't know what else to do to get it to recognize the modem. There's nothing in the device manager to work with.

Now suddenly one day last week, the files wouldn't show on my computer. I was told that there's nothing on the hard disk and would I like to format it?
Are my files really lost to me? What can I do? Please help!

Apple/MOV/Quicktime sucks the big one!!
Date: 05/30/06

Ok I'm highly PO'ed here. I can't play an MOV file. I have quicktime and about 20 other video players. They can all play Rammstein videos in .mov that I've downloaded. But it won't play a movie trailer and no one will share their screen caps from it, so all I wanted was just to make my own screen caps since people are too stuck up to share simple pictures, but noooooooooooooo, it doesn't play! I'm tired of waiting 20 minutes just to view a web page, staying up until 1am to download yet another video player that's supposed to play MOV's all to have NOTHING that on the face of the earth that can play it!! How come I can't play this MOV file????? >:(

I have a little question for you and I hope that there will be somebody who can help me with that.
I need to configure Samba on a SuSE server (it wasn't my idea to do it all with SuSE..). I did most of the things to make it work but I have no clue how to configure groups... so it's like when I have server working I can only log in from another computer as root and I need another users to do it too but I don't know how.
is there anyone who can help me with that?

What... the hell. Problems saving files.
Date: 05/28/06
Keywords: no keywords
Okay, guys, this one has me stumped completely. Lately-- starting Wednesday, I guess. That's when I noticed it-- I've had trouble saving media files: videos, mp3, and zip files (pics are fine, though). The file will go through the whole download process, with the little progress window, but then when I go to locate the file, it's like none of it ever happened. Nothing comes up. Or, when I save it on something like my Desktop or in My Documents, the little icon will show up at 99%, then disappear completely. WTF?
I thought they might be going to a hidden folder, but all of my searches have turned up with nothing. So it's like I said, it's as if I never saved it. I've also had trouble receiving files on MSN. I had to ask a friend to send me the same damn picture three times before it went through.
any ideas??? this is driving me abolutely insane. I'm on Win XP, btw. I've already tried a system restore, but that did nothing.
Edit: Oh yeah, and I can't even download programs. I tried to d/l Adobe Audition, and everything went through, until I clicked "Run" when it came to the whole "Are you sure you want to download this file?" thing... then nothing happened. It just would not enter setup. Ugh.

Auto-run in Windows. How do I turn it off?
Date: 05/25/06
Keywords: no keywords
I have Windows XL Home Edition.
My problem is that every time I insert a CD-ROM or connect the external HD, the system starts up the Auto-run. Maybe not so much of a problem as an annoyance, but I'd really like to be able to turn this function off.
I've tried to disable it in the properties of both CD-ROM drive and E drive, but it doesn't seem to take.
Is there a way to tell the whole system that Auto-run is so last year and please not to do it again?
Thanks for any and all help ;>

I need help quick before this one dies
Date: 05/22/06
Keywords: no keywords
My hard drive is about to die. I've been hanging onto it for years because the computer I bought it with didn't come with a Windows CD and I can't afford to buy one. It sounds like shredding metal so I know it's about to die.
About a month ago, a friend gave me an "old" computer of hers (it's not old at all). I haven't used it at all because I can't get it online. I guess the modem doesn't work. It's an IBM ThinkCentre, runs XP, 256MB RAM, and something like 2.8GHz which is better than my generic barebones kit that I'm using now. So, never having had an XP computer before, I thought you had no control over the devices. But a friend online said that she can see the devices on her XP computer through device manager. Well, on the XP IBM, the device manager is EMPTY. There's NOTHING there. I mean it is BLANK. Think of an empty white image in MSPaint. Yes - it's BLANK. So I have no control over that machine and I can't find out why the modem doesn't work. And since I have a ton of additional hardware in this computer to transfer over to that one.... I'm afraid none of it's going to work because I won't be able to see the devices in the device manager. What's wrong??? I need control over that machine and I need it now. I'm beyond frustrated with the empty device manager. I can't do anything without a device list!!!
Also - is the file system in XP the same as ME? I also have a 2nd hard drive (relatively new) for storage and I don't want to lose everything by having to format it.

Hmm, can someone help me on this? I posted a while back but no cigar =/
When I go to sites like deviantart.com and wikipedia (not the main page, just when I type something in) the page never loads. Instead, it's just a blank white page.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

Laptop Problem
Date: 05/18/06
Keywords: virus
Okay I'm not really good with explaining things about computers, so please bare with me. Okay so I was busy messing around with adobe photoshop and I was signed online, but I was only downloading an episode of a tv show I missed. All of the sudden I get this blue screen with a bunch of writing in white flash by really quick and my computer shuts down. So the next time I didn't sign online and it still did it again. My brother's friend was over and said to restore it to an earlier date and he did. After he left it did it again. It'll probably be doing it soon too. Anyone have any idea what's causing this? I did a virus scan and everything came back fine. The screen goes by too quickly to read what the blue screen says and when I try to submit about the error it doesn't work anymore. It did the first time, and it said it could be anything from a hardware problem to a problem with my charger, which I just got a new one. I should also mention that I just got back my computer from the company not even a month ago for a problem with the charger outlet on my computer. I got my laptop in November of last year and I've already had to take it in to be seen 4 times already, none of which I caused. Any help would be appreciated!

Wordache
Date: 05/17/06

Hi, I use Microsoft Word often but every so often I will be in the middle of writing something and the saving window pops up as if I had clicked on the Save icon or went to File, Save, even though I all I was doing was typing. Then I'll click "cancel" but a few minutes will pass and it will come up again. Eventually, it gets to the point where it won't let me cancel or get out, and I have to ctrl+alt+del my way outta that mess. This happens only every so often, but I am worried that it will become a permanent problem. Has anyone heard of this happening, and whether it is caused by something I am doing wrong? It is a great headache, I would appreciate anyone's input! Thanks.
