Laptop monitor... destroyed
Date: 06/23/06
Keywords: google
I can't even believe that I'm writing this, but I guess I have to accept the truth. And, that is my laptop monitor is destroyed. It fell off the desk and now the LCD monitor is shot to hell. I cried for like an hour. Anyway, I tried turning the machine on again and it actually did go through the windows screen and the whole bit and I'm pretty sure it went to the desktop. Only thing is, I can't see it because the screen is a white-ish blue with big black blotches where the machine made impact with the floor. Christ.
My question:
a) Is there anyway to fix a laptop monitor. I know it's the stupidest question ever. I imagine it costs a million dollars. I did a google search and saw how this guy only replaced the actual LCD part of his laptop monitor, but I looked at mine and there aren't any screws. But, maybe there is a chance I can fix the LCD part if I took it to a shop... I don't know. I also don't know if it's worth the money.
b) Until I can buy a new machine (tears...) would it work if I bought a PC monitor and connected it to my laptop? I would have to open the laptop flat and then use the keyboard on it, but look at the PC monitor. Not the best solution, but is it possible? I'm pretty sure I have a port (?) in the back of my machine for it, one has a picture of a printer, the other a rectangle. How much would a used monitor costs anyway?
I'm sorry for sounding like an air head, but computers aren't my forte. Plus, I'm so distraught right now I could faint...

The memory could not be written. Click OK to terminate the program. Click on CANCEL to debug the program." but when I try to use the debug program that doesn't work either.

I have like 3 big problems.
Some virus or something had turned off my Firewall and I can't get it back on. All the links are like dead. And I can't fix it. So I have all these popups and they won't go away. And it's annoying and my computer is super sensitive to getting viruses. So that's one questions. Help?
The other one is that AIM virus thing. I'm really kind of dumb about that stuff. If I deleted AIM and redownloaded, would that work? And I can't download AIM from the AIM site. So someone once sent a link to download it there. I think it had something to do with CNet or something.
So I need helped with my Firewall, help with my AIM or the link to redownload AIM.
Thanks.

Computer randomly restarts itself?
Date: 06/18/06
Keywords: no keywords
I'm running on windows xp home, and umm...I recently got a new motherboard. Now my computer randomly restarts itself =\ There is no pattern...sometimes it restarts 10 minutes after I turn on my computer, sometimes a few hours later...
I still suspect the motherboard...cause this never happened before. If it's not the motherboard...then it's most likely another piece of hardware.
So, any suggestions? Or someway I can find the problem before bringing it to some place to fix?

Virus?
Date: 06/18/06
Keywords: virus
I'll give you the rundown because I like to over specify and never leave anything minorly imporatant out:
For the past 4(?) years I've had Walmart Connect (basically like old AOL, just cheaper) as my internet provider (and Norton Anti-virus for the last year) a little while back (maybe three months) it would start asking me if I wanted to switch to Ntscape whenever I would log in, I'd say no and jsut go about my business. Then one day I go to click my icon, and it no longer says Walmart Connect, but Netscape, it changed itself somehow (my email still is the same..). A week ago my Norton Anti-virus expired, but I was dallying on renewing...
The Problem:
For the past two day most graphics/pictures/everything but words on ANY and EVERY site I go to (except for livejournal icons) are blank boxes with red x's. I hurried up and renewed my Norton thinking it would be fixed somehow..but I still have red x's. What's going on?

Laptop Battery Problem..
Date: 06/16/06
Keywords: no keywords
Hi :)
I've got a Compaq laptop that is only running from AC Power at the moment. This means that if I accidentally move the laptop and pull out the power cord then the laptop switches off. The battery is two years old and was working ok until last night although it never held the charge for long.
My questions are:
Is there a simple way to make a laptop hook up to the battery? Could this problem be something to do with changed settings?
OR
Could the battery be totally flat? Would getting a new battery be the solution?
OR
Is it a mystery third option?!
I've checked the BIOS settings and can't find anything about ac power/battery power in there. I've also looking in the Power Management section in the Control Panel and there's nothing about switching between battery power and ac power.
Thanks for reading (and double thanks for answering!) :D

Help

Keywords: web, microsoft
I've been trying to download the Korean language pack from the Microsoft website so I can actually read the text on Korean websites rather than see rows and rows of squares. The Microsoft website kept mentioning that the language pack needed Microsoft Office, which I don't have. (I have something called Wordperfect.) So there's a link on the page that said, "If you don't have Office XP, download here." I clicked and it downloaded (I think), then there was a pop-up that said it wasn't going to work with my computer or something...
I swear I'm not a blonge bimbo, I'm just not talented with computers...could somebody help me?

AVI format Converters..
Date: 06/10/06
Keywords: no keywords
Hi,
I'm sure this has been posted on here before or something similar to it... but I apologize in advance if it sounds like a repeat.
Which is the best converter out there to use if I want to convert *.avi files into readable format (i'm assuming .dvd?) on a DVD-R -- need to burn entire seasons of shows on DVD-Rs in order to watch on regular dvd players. I've heard of a lot of converters out there but dont know which one is the easiest to use. I already have a dvd shrink program to shorten the size in order to fit on a DVD-R but just need a program to convert the file type, so that I may watch the copy on a regular DVD player.
Thanks to all responses and suggestions in advance.

Lookin for input

After several years, my faithful motherboard has died, so that means I get to upgrade. mwuhahahahaha. I'm on a budget, and I've found two mobo/cpu combo's that fit my budget, and are an upgrade in the processor. I've read all the specs and what not for the Athlon 64's, but reviews are one thing, what people who use them have to say is another. What's the basic performance like, temperatures/cooling issues, will 32-bit xp run with it?
My other question is about the two motherboard companies. I know ASUS by reputation, and a friend back in college was an ASUS fanboy, but I know next to nothing about Biostar. Since I've never dealt with either company, I'm really just curious about the reliability of the boards and how well they hold up, along with, how their customer support is, and if they speak english(bad bad experience with ECS)
Anyway, here's the two combos I'm lookin at. Any and all input will be appreciated.
BIOSTAR K8M80-M7A with Athlon64 3000+ Socket 754
or
Asus K8V-X SE with Athlon 64 3300+ Socket 754

emachines help
Date: 06/08/06
Keywords: no keywords
Hey! I need help with my emachines T2082. It keeps freezing and I'm having to restart it by switching the power cord off and sometimes it will freeze up immediately after it starts back up. It also sometimes shuts off on it's own... like if I go to site with a ton of graphics... I guess? This problem happens a lot! It's been doing this for about 2 weeks now. Finally I got an error message that said I needed to re-download a video driver (or something like that) and I did that, but it's still locking up. I tried emachines help site, but they wanted to know things I couldn't answer in order to get help and I'm too broke to call them. Please help me. I hope this description helps any. If not I'll go into better detail if needed!
Thanks a ton in advance!

My onboard sound thinks it's better than the sound card...
Date: 06/06/06
Keywords: software
Hey there. I've got a bit of an annoyance with my PC and I was hoping someone would be able to help me with it.
The motherboard has an onboard sound card, but I bought a 5.1 card so I could use my speakers. However, in order to use the front ports (the mic and headphones) I need to have the onboard sound on instead of the new sound card.
It wouldn't be that big of a problem, if I didn't have to keep switching out my speakers with my headset.
So:
Is this a hardware or software problem?
And can I switch the front ports to be used with the sound card?
Thanks for the help, if I get any. :D

printers - dry toner laser / inkjet ?
Date: 06/06/06
Keywords: no keywords
Can I ask about printers in this community?
I'd like to print something from a dry toner laser printer.
I have several printers at home, but I don't know if they are this kind.
Someone once told me to use a magnifying glass to distinguish a laser print from an inkjet print. Is there any other way I could find out what kind of printer I have?
I have an Okipage 6e (it's an obsolete model)
and a Hewlett Packard Desketjet 695C.
The latter prints slowly, with a mechanism applying ink side to side on the paper.
The print for Okipage just slides out--I have a feeling this one is laser, but I don't know if it's dry toner laser.
