Quicken 2007 vs. Microsoft Money 2007
Date: 03/21/07
Keywords: no keywords
I'm still not 100% sure that I need to get either one, but I'm kicking around the idea. I've read tons of horrible reviews for both, but the most perplexing is Quicken. Cnet (who I have always looked upon fondly) rates it very well, an 8.0, and gives it an editor's choice award. However, the users of that site rate it at a 2.6, which is just mind blowing.
I can't even count how many different reviews I've read, but I thought I'd give a shot at asking in a place where I could at least have a little interaction with the people who respond.
I'm not looking for anything specific, I just want to be able to keep an eye on my finances. With credit cards, checking and savings accounts, loans and a 401k to keep track of, (not to mention bills and everything else) it would be awfully nice to have one place to track everything.. assuming either of these work worth a darn.
If anyone has any experience with either of these and can throw any advice my way I'd very much appreciate it.
Thanks!

vista?
Date: 03/19/07
Keywords: no keywords
a friend of mine is looking for a laptop and i have been recruited to be the one to pick it since i have a pretty good working knowledge of computers. i have up until this point avoided vista because of the problems i keep hearing about being it. also the person i'm buying a computer for doesn't know much about computers at all and i don't know how much of a learning curve vista has. on top of all this, i have been asked to get rid of the crap on the computer when it comes in and put in some good essential stuff (avg free, zone alarm, irfanview, office, etc) and i don't know how well these programs will work on vista if they work at all.
the problem is i'm coming up short on finding computers that don't have vista preloaded and i'm not crazy about downgrading a brand new computer to xp. so i'm either looking for advice about vista or where to buy a cheap laptop (new) with xp still loaded on it. i've been looking on newegg and tigerdirect and there are a few but not a ton. she wants a 17" monitor which is complicating the issue.
thanks for the help!

Backups
Date: 03/18/07
Keywords: no keywords
I have about 2TB of files I need to back up. Most of them are already backed-up on to a huge stack of DVDs (photographs I've taken over the past five years, including RAW, PSD and JPG versions).
I could go off and buy a 2TB RAID stack, but that's pretty expensive.
Are tape drives still a viable backup solution? How long do the cartridges last? And how much can you store on one?

cPanel Problem
Date: 03/17/07
Keywords: virus
Hey I can't get to my log in part for my cPanel and it seems like I'm the only one. My friend tried it on his computer and the guy who hosts me send me a screencap and showed that he can get to it too. The weird thing is I tried to get to my friend's cPanel and I can get to hers fine. My link would be http://hipscene.net:2082 and It won't load for me. I've asked several people to try but I can get to it. Anyone know what the problem might be? I figured Firewall or something but that wouldn't explain how I can get to my friends and not mine. I even tried disabling my firewalls, virus protectors, etc and it still didn't work.

I don't got the power
Date: 03/15/07
Keywords: no keywords
(crossposted a bit maybe)
So, the AC adaptor for my lappy crapped out. Brick gets juice (LED lights up), but power does not get from there to back of lappy. Lappy gets power fine from loaner AC adaptor, so problem is in inner link of AC cord.
Question is, where to get an inexpensive replacement? Lappy is a 2002 Dell Latitude C610, so it's not really worth putting a lot more money into it. (For example, I refuse to replace the mostly dead onboard battery, because they're worth more than the machine is now.) I've found some nice-looking pricing, around $33 and up, but I'm not familiar with any of the vendors, so I don't know who to feel good about or not. The Dell stuff either comes from Dell or authorised dealers (OEM wares), or as aftermarket knockoffs (much cheaper). I don't want to pay the steel OEM rates. I would, however, be okay with paying a bit more for the slightly better one (PA9 instead of PA6), since that would also be compatible with the same-age Inspiron whose cord I'm borrowing right now.
Advice?

MUP.sys issue
Date: 03/14/07
Keywords: google
So....I just got my new notebook last week (asus w7j). It came prepartitioned into 2 drives both fat32, I converted them using an asus utility then made the mistake of trusting partitionmagic to merge the 2 together. Now, I can't get into safe mode and it hangs up on MUP.sys.
Anyone deal with this issue before?
I googled around a few forums and nothing has been able to fix the issue. I'm ready to fdisk his bad boy.
Ideas?

OS X10.4 on bw G3?
Date: 03/14/07
Keywords: software
I recently acquired an old b&w G3 codenamed Yosemite and would like to install OS X. It has the 400 MHz proc., 40g hard drive and 256m of ram and fire wire. I updated the os to 9.2.2 and updated the firmware. Originally I was using a back-up copy of Tiger but discovered that the computer did not have a DVD drive. I put in an extra I had that of course did not have the apple firmware built into it. I got an apple drive that was broken. Finally get a working apple DVD drive and the machine will not boot from the disc. If you boot from the hard drive you can browse the disc and see that it is indeed a Tiger install disc. I tried an external USB DVD drive and got similar results. I tried to set the startup disk to both of devices and tried to double click on the installer which will also restart the computer. I get the error about unable to find hardware device and it won’t reboot to that device.
I got a new iMac and attempted to try target disk mode over fire wire. The G3 would not boot into target disk mode. Everything I read online says the Yosemite supports target disk mode. The iMac was an Intel machine so I’m not sure if that was part of the issue.
I finally broke down and got my own copy of Tiger. It will boot the machine and come up as if it were going to install OS X but then throws up an alert and says this software cannot be installed on this machine.
I tried installing it with xpostfacto4 but it won’t open on 9.2.2 saying it cannot find the appropriate program to open.
I’ve read about taking an image of the install disc and putting it on an extended fire wire hard drive, but I don’t have access to as external fire wire hard drive and I’d hate to purchase one if it is just another futile attempt.
I read that apple says the b&w G3 will only run OS X 10.2 but I was unable to confirm that from Apple's site. And I don’t want to have to buy another copy of OS X if it also will be futile.
Any suggestions or pointers to what I may be missing would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 RC
Date: 03/13/07
Keywords: web, microsoft
Microsoft quietly released Service Pack 2 for Windows Server 2003 - all editions. Their website calls it a release candidate, but given it's presence on the official update site, I suspect it's the final version.
You can get it via the update site, or if you prefer (as I do) to get it as one download and apply it offline, you can get the entire package here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsserver/sp2.mspx
Along with a complete rollup of all critical updates released since SP1, it also includes some new features, which depend on whether you are running the standard, R2 or SMS versions.
See the FAQs for more information.

5.1 question.

UPD: Thnx everybody, Foobar2000 rules ^_^
Hello, fellow geeks!!! Maybe you can help me...
I have internal soundcard that supports 5.1 sound. I connected my 5.1 system toit. In games and 5.1 movies everything is perfect, but here comes trouble: all my mp3 (and 99% of all other world's mp3) are in stereo. Is there any plugin for winamp that can solve this problem (emulate 5.1 or smth) Or is there any decoder, that transforms 2 channel music to 5.1 (I can't imagine such a thing, but who knows...)
Thank you so much ^_^

Web Comics
Date: 03/09/07
Keywords: software, web
I asked this once before about six months ago and didn't find what I was looking for. The project has come to the front-burner, so I'm asking again.
I'm looking for software to help me, a non-drawing-artist do a web comic. Sure, I could draw it by hand and scan it, or use Photoshop or Illustrator, but I'm not that talented.
I'd love something that would let me design my characters and place them into the storyboard with props, backgrounds and the like. Such a thing HAS to exist, if even for children.
That way, I could draw my characters or get an artist to work with me to do that, and then use the software to assemble it. The real heavy lifting is the story and arc, which I've already got down. It doesn't need to be visually stunning, just passable - and not stick figures, as that's been done.
Anyone? Tips?

odd network problems
Date: 03/08/07
Keywords: no keywords
At some random point today, a few applications decided that they didn't feel like accessing my network.. Specifically, the iTunes store, gmail notifier, and my LJ client (Semagic). Now, Firefox runs fine, as does bittorrent (uTorrent), Last.FM, Skype, & Trillian; but the previously mentioned 3 still hate me..... I've tried to do a system restore and that didn't accomplish anything, so now I am left scratching my head as to why these applications aren't connecting like everything else.... Am I completely missing something here?
