1. frustrating problem(s)

Date: 01/08/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: virus, antivirus, web, yahoo, microsoft, google

On my older computer (a Dell that runs Windows 98), I keep getting invalid page fault errors. Several occur after Windows has loaded:
    YOP (that's Yahoo Online Protection)
    rundll32
    and something called autodown

It also occurs when I startup Internet Explorer, I get that program error message asking me if I want to send data to Microsoft and then the program crashes. I can't access the Internet even though I'm connected.

All the errors say that the program caused an invalid page fault error at module "unknown"

I've tried running anti-virus (AVG) and Ad-aware... I have that computer networked with this one (running Windows XP) and sharing a DSL connection. After some issues in the beginning, I finally got the network up and running so I've been using this computer to download the antivirus programs so I can run them on the other one since I can't get IE to work there at all.
Another thing that may or may not be related: if I uncheck automatically detect settings under LAN settings in internet options, then IE doesn't crash, but the pages won't load.

I'm also having a small, unrelated issue on this computer (the windows XP one). I can't get the internet options setting for "never dial a connection" to stick. I have DSL, so I'm always connected, but certain sites make the dial a connection box pop up. And when I head back to internet options, the "dial whenever a network connection is not present" option is checked off.

Any help or suggestions are much appreciated! I've tried Dell's support website as well as Microsoft's and Googled 'til I couldn't see straight, but I haven't come up with any solutions for my problem.

I would like to build a site using php that has several repeated elements (headers, footers, menu) that appear on every page, with only the central content and some of the styling (to highlight menu items) changing.

It works well so far, but a friend tells me that this method is less search-friendly than coding out each individual page and that it will be ignored by Google. Is this true?

Also, give then common-template model, is it better to:

    1. Load all pages from a single php file with page-specific content in individual functions

    2. Load each page with its own content and use includes for common elements

    3. Have a central controlling php file that assembles each page by includes from a separate file for each part (header, content, footer, etc)

    4. Make each page a complete static unit with duplicate headers, footers, etc identical to other pages.

I can make any of these work, though #4 seems highly tedious. I just want opinions on which ones are considered more efficient and more "searchable."

    Hi folks,

Can anyone recommend a program for benchmarking hard disk speed in Windows? I know I can check Google, but I'm after personal recommendations.

I thought Nero had a tool for this, but having checked in 6.6 I can only see tools for checking the speed of CD and DVD drives.

On another topic, has anyone upgraded to Nero 7? Is it any better, or just bloated with more useless features?

i'd like to add a calendar to my site. it doesn't need to be editable by visitors to the page, only by me.. but it does need to have functionality that would allow visitors to flip through different months and see what days i'm available. ideally it could also be colorcoded based on different categories (completely available, someone has requested me but nothing is confirmed, not at all available.)

i have come to ask the experts if you know a useful app for this purpose. i'm definitely not a true webdev person... i only know basic html and a little sql/javascript/etc. i googled, but most of the results were for calendars which remain on the site of the calendar's creator (e.g. calendar.yahoo.com) vs. ones which could integrate into my own site's design.

(to give you an idea of my preferences, some of my favorite web-based tools are flickr, allconsuming.net (and 43 things), dodgeball, yelp, etc.)

  10. major apache issues!

Date: 12/13/05 (Apache)    Keywords: virus, web, google, apache

Hello, I just joined this fine community...actually it's quite an amazing coincidence that I found it right when my Apache server is having terrible problems.
I haven't had problems with it up until recently, but lately it has just been really misbehaving on me! Normally I have one of my friends help me with it but he's really busy so hopefully someone here can be of service.

    Here it goes:

I got a new computer (an emachine with Windows xp Media Edition) a few months ago and ran Apache on it just perfectly. I was all set to start working on a new layout for my web page when something weird happened with Comcast: they actually kicked me offline for having a virus! I never knew comcast could do that...so I had to go to Best Buy where they swept my entire computer clean and reinstalled all the things the machine came with. Luckily I had back up files of most of my pics and such...but not of Apache of course.

So I had to re-install Apache from its website. This is around where the trouble started.
When I re-installed it, I followed the guidelines that my friend (who has always helped in the past) had written down for me in previous emails. I had saved the emails so that I could refer to them later in case of such things.
I installed Apache 2.0.55, or as the actual file is read: apache_2.0.55-win32-x86-no_ssl.msi to my desktop and then ran the file.
I typed in my information correctly (I even double and triple checked that!), and then continued to install...and Apache ran perfectly fine.

Then, of course, I had to go to the C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache2\conf file and modify the httpd.conf file. I copy and pasted what was in an email I received from my friend, which has always been correct in the past and which, previously, I have had NO problem with AT ALL.

However, when I restarted Apache, I got the following message: "The requested operation has failed!"
It hasn't started since then. *cries*

I have tried to do the following to remedy (and possibly understand) what is going on:

    1. I tested the Apache Server Configuration
when I did this, it said that there was an error on line 15 of the httpd.conf file. I checked line 15 and didn't see anything out of order, but I was also unsure of what I was looking for, so that didn't much help.

    2. I checked the Error Log File
when I did this, this message (among message that were not errors or problems) came up:
[Mon Dec 12 17:29:28 2005] [warn] (OS 995)The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request. : winnt_accept: Asynchronous AcceptEx failed.

What exactly does this mean? I had no clue...

    3. I searched for the words "Asynchronous AcceptEx" on google and came up with a few sites that I thought might explain what was going on, but mostly they were just a bunch of people talking about similar problems, rather than a solution to the problem.

Sooo...I still remain lost and need help!
If anyone knows anything about this or has suggestions please let me know. This has been going on for about a month now and I am not a person with money (being a college kid and all), so I can't just have my domain name sit here being unused.
    :(

Thanks to anyone who can help me!

  11. name based virtual hosts, suse

Date: 12/04/05 (Apache)    Keywords: php, html, web, yahoo, google, apache

I am beginning to work on multiple sites on my home test server and need to set up virtual hosts.

My server is running SuSE 10 with Apache 2, and is accessed by typing in "talon" in firefox's address bar.  I copied vhosts.template to site1.conf and edited it as follows:

Next I opened /etc/hosts and edited as follows:

    Then, rcrestart apache2.... ok.

And here is where I am stumped..  (and btw I googled the bit about /etc/hosts - i'm not sure if that's how it should be).    If I type in http://talon/site1 Apache says page can't be found.  If I try http://site1 page can't be found.    My site1 files exist in the DocumentRoot listed in the site1.conf file above.

I also read through apache's documentation on virtual hosts but the way they explained it didn't make as much sense to me.

Thanks for any and all help.. I've wanted to learn vhosts for some time now.

Ok, i am a little new to apache, so go easy on me.

I have an database based website that uses id's to call each page e.g http://www.somesite.co.uk/index.php?id=1

now this i all very nice, but i find that url a little long for me, so i would like to be able to make it into something like http://www.somesite.co.uk/1

now i know this would have implications like if i wanted to sent to a folder past the root, like http://www.somesite.co.uk/images/1.jpg so it would have to have exceptions setup to.

now i have been told that this can be done with a mod_rewrite, but i have spend days pouring over documentation, google hits etc and i have yet to manage to do this. is there anyone out there who has a any clue's?

    Thanks for any help

  13. virtual hosting

Date: 01/03/06 (IT Professionals)    Keywords: html, web, hosting, google

I need some iis help here. (or meta refresh/redirect?)

I'm not a web guy by trade, but this thing falls on my lap anyway.

    --
ok: I just did a domain transfer of mydomainB.com from some china registrar to godaddy.com

godaddy.com doesn't seem to have URL forwarding, only domain forwarding and A and Cnames, mx

(as opposed to the one i use for my own private domain www.domainbooking.com)

I just turned on domain forwarding to point to mydomainA.com/mywebsite but I'm not sure if it will corrupt the mx entries for mail. (which should point to mail.mydomainB.com , in turn A for mail.mydomainB.com = 12.34.56.78)

assuming it does and I reverse the domain forwarding.
then what I have is that my current A for www.mydomainA.com = 11.22.33.44
and my new A for www.mydomainB.com points to 11.22.33.44 as well

but they are supposed to be two distinct websites.

so I need to redirect by url? perhaps on my index.html. those that originate from www.mydomainA.com proceed to index1.html and those from www.mydomainB.com proceed to 11.22.33.44/mywebsite/index.html

I think this falls under the category of virtual hosting, i've been searching google for bit with not much luck.
I'm not sure host headers work for wan/internet domain names, and godaddy/A addressing doesn't quite allow you to specify port numbers either.

to add to the complication, the website is also hosting an exchange outloook mobile access site. so http://www.mydomainA.com/exchange should be accessible.

so how do I do this?

Does anyone have any experience removing this from a Windows 2000 system w/o rebooting into Safe Mode? We are running SAV corporate 8.x on most of the systems in our network, and it is not able to remove MSAOL32dll.exe from the system. I am also unable to kill the process from the task manager.

I've been to SARC.com and done google searches for it, and haven't found any way to remove it other than rebooting the system into safe mode. Unfortunately, I have two servers that take miracles to reboot (they control our entire floor) that have been infected.

    hi, i'm new here *waves*

so slashdot has pointed to articles rumoring that opera is being / has already been bought by microsoft

okay, stop screaming.  this is following another reported rumor last week that google was about to buy out opera, which fortunately opera themselves laughed off as false, as they also did with this (even more ridiculous) rumor here, here and here, so we can all sleep well tonight.

there's even a hilarious poll asking opera fans to vote on who the next comany to be rumored opera shopping will be here.  they need to add microsoft (microsopera?  microsoft internet oxplora?  how about micrapera?) to the list.

    which makes me wonder:

exactly what would a micrapera bastardized half-breed broswer be like?

i imagine lots and lots and lots of completely unnecessary and ridiculous features no one uses while they'd take out all the useful ones.  maybe they'd hide them under eighteen million extra (ugly) buttons and menus.  when micrapera would crash (and it would of course) so would your computer and everyone else's computer on your neighborhood, and maybe your printer would get possessed by the devil.  the opera logo would be changed to a blue O with a hoop around it like an orbit.  maybe the 404 error would be replaced by a blue screen, or maybe a red one?  oh and it would come preloaded with a worm or two.  i don't know.

i'm too creeped out now, so feel free to add to the list :-)

Latest one I came up with is for Google Maps. "map" is the key, so to get directions you'd enter (if you knew the addresses, of course):

I also made sure dictionary.com, merriam-webster.com, and wikipedia were available as those are popular places for myself and I think others would find them useful.

  19. Optimising MySQL

Date: 06/28/05 (PHP Development)    Keywords: mysql, database, sql, google

I'm working on a site at the moment and I'm trying to optimise the MySQL queries, to place less of a strain on the server and make generally neater code. I'm currently using this technique to pull the last 10 topics flagged as news from the database:

    $query = mysql_query( "SELECT * FROM frm_topics t WHERE t.tpc_news = '1' AND t.tpc_news_mod_id > 0 ORDER BY t.tpc_sticky DESC, t.tpc_time DESC LIMIT 10", $_GLOBALS[ 'sql' ] );

Then in the loop created by $results = mysql_fetch_array( $query ) using a second query to pull the content of the post:

    $news_sql = mysql_query( "SELECT * FROM frm_posts p WHERE p.pst_tpc_id = '".$results[ 'tpc_id' ]."' ORDER BY pst_time ASC LIMIT 1", $_GLOBALS[ 'sql' ] );

Now, although this works, it currently uses 11 queries, plus various others I'm using to create each page; so I'm trying to find a neater solution. I've tried some tutorials on sub-queries found on Google, to no avail. The following works if there's only one news topic but falls over if there's more:

    $query = mysql_query( "SELECT * FROM frm_posts p, frm_topics t WHERE p.pst_tpc_id = ( SELECT tpc_id FROM frm_topics t WHERE t.tpc_news = '1' AND t.tpc_news_mod_id > 0 ORDER BY t.tpc_sticky DESC, t.tpc_time DESC LIMIT 10 ) AND t.tpc_id = p.pst_tpc_id ORDER BY p.pst_time ASC LIMIT 1", $_GLOBALS[ 'sql' ] );

I'd really appreciate it if anyone could lend a hand or point me in the right direction.

    http://www.sqledit.com/dg/

Yesterday after lunch, I got one of those famous, hurried "critical" requests to export some data to a vendor for an important project. Someone from our Stock Administration team insisted on meeting with me to give me a USB drive to get the database image. Apparently, they needed someone to import the data on our system, then export it in a format requested by the vendor in order to test and configure a new offering for us.

I was already irritated that yet another team had failed to document and obtain resources for their data requirements, therefore making an emergency for me that very important people would hear about if I didn't follow through. I did what I aways do, I said I'd look at it and see what could be done. Oh man...you know what I saw? This dude had been walking around all over the place with this little flash drive in is pocket with stock administration data for EVERYONE IN OUR COMPANY. This data included Social Security Numbers, Birthday's, Names, Addresses, Salaries, and Stock Options. AND he wanted me to just send it off to some company to play around with. I was pretty mad, especially when he had his manager call me to complain.

I explained that this was in violation with our SOX commitments and that the data would have to be at the very least cleansed before it was sent out. I also mentioned that I didn't particularly want my SSN sent to parts unknown for a proof-of-concept project. After that I found a kind way of mentioning that carrying around sensitive data in an unsecure format is grounds for termination. Then his manager called the CIO. All the better, at least the CIO understands INFORMATION and the protection thereof!

I didn't have a clue how to cleanse data, but it had to get done fast, so I did a google search for tools, and I found this little gem. The DTM Data Generator contained a robust set of tools for analyzing the SQL tables field by field, while retaining the referential integrity. It's very versatile. I'm definately going to use this again. I think I might finally generate those mean sets of data for our QA team to test against. This tool rocks.
