1. Windows start-up error

Date: 05/19/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software, google

Hey everyone, I'm hoping you might be able to help with this problem my mom is having. When she starts her computer, she gets this error message:

"we apologize for the inconvenience but windows did not start successfully" and it goes on to say somethinga bout a change in hardware or software may have caused it. I googled it a bit, and it looks like a Norton Update could have possibly caused this, but otherwise everything (according to her and my sister, since I do not live there currently) was working perfectly fine earlier in the day.

I tried having them start in safe mode (or any of the other options that pop up), but nothing happens when they select the option to do so. I also tried to have her restart the computer with the factory DVD in the drive (And Insignia running Win XP Home), but it seems that is a one-way ticket to restoring the computer to the factory settings only, thereby wiping all of her data.

The only realistic option I can see at this point is to drive home with my computer, hook her HDD as secondary to mine, and get all her files backed up so I can wipe and restore it. Any suggested on how to fix this so that it doesn't have to come to that?

    Thanks in advance!

  2. Double dose of questions

Date: 05/21/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: rss, software, html, java, web, spyware, yahoo, microsoft, google

I have two computering questions I hope I can find assistance for. One is for me, and one is for my mom.

Mine: I have a Digital Camera with an Lexar Media 32MB MMC Memory Card. I put the card in the slot in my computer, it reads it, everything is dandy. I take the card out, go take some more pictures. Come back to my computer, stick the card back in, and...NOTHING. Light doesn't come on, card isn't seen. I make sure to use the proper removal procedure each time (stopping the process so the light goes off). The only way to make my computer see the card after it's already seen it once is to completely restart. You can imagine how annoying that is...help!

Mom's: My mother has a worse problem. Her computer randomly crashes. Completely shuts down and starts again. She has no idea why.

I had her run Hijack This, and here is her log.

  3. Introducing Network World Community Groups!

Date: 05/22/07 (IT Professionals)    Keywords: css, web, yahoo, google

We've just added a new feature to NetworkWorld.com Community: Groups. Our groups are similar to Google and Yahoo groups (only way networkier, of course). They're a way to bring together folks with a particular common interest. You can let anybody with a Network World Community account join your group or limit members to specific people. Member posts appear both in a Web archive and are sent out via e-mail.

When Cisco routers got blamed for an outage in Japan, users rose to the company's defense, saying it had to be misconfiguration of those routers, not the routers themselves, that was to blame. A story on Argonne National Laboratory ditching VoIP phones has some NetworkWorld.com users wondering if the lab could have avoided its problems. Discuss challenges for Cisco. A discussion on IT jargon has turned into a debate between whippersnappers and codgers (also see: Why young people aren't going into IT). One user ponders the re-vestiture of AT&T. Other users debate REAL ID.

Greg Royal explains how Nortel needs to start building communities of vested interest. Essential SharePoint discusses what every SharePoint developer should know. Paul McNamara battles it out with supporters of Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul At issue: Online polls. Brad Reese asks: Why go for multiple CCIE tracks? James Gaskin reports from the ITEC show in Houston. Mark Gibbs gets into it on the topic of "Winrot," or all that kruft that slows Windows PCs

So join in on the discussions and write about what you want others to know!

  8. fiddling with parameters in a query

Date: 05/24/07 (Javascript Community)    Keywords: google

Hiya all, I've searched and browsed and I can't find the answer to this, so hope you can help.

I have a query form and I need to stick some more content into value parameters before sending it off to the search engine (Google Mini in this case). I know the names and index positions of the textfields, and I've figured out how to do onsubmit, but I can't seem to get the existing values nor set those parameters.

Has anyone done this kind of thing before? I'm hoping it's dead-easy and I'm just being a confused newbie.

    many thanks in advance,

    Avi

  11. Open Source Store

Date: 05/30/07 (PHP Community)    Keywords: software, web, google

I wanted to ask for some recommendations for an Open Source online store webapp. Basically, I want to setup your standard site that allows me to sell some items and accept credit card transactions.

I've googled for different projects/merchants and found many options; there are a few I am already leaning towards (for example http://www.zen-cart.com/ and paypal for my merchant account seem to be an attractive option). I don't expect to have a high volume of sales (it is more of a hobby type of thing).

Any recommendations? I am not looking for something that "gets the job done", I am looking for a open source online store software that you actually loved using. To me, if I like it, it means I will also get involved with the project and contribute to it...

    Any suggestions?

  19. Large Hard Drive Support

Date: 05/31/07 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: google

Alright I come with a problem that may have a fairly simple solution, but I can't figure out what it is.

    Background Info:
I have an old computer with 1.2ghz AMD Athlon with 512mb RAM running (now) on Windows XP Pro (SP2) and before this it had no hard drive. So I decided that I would use it as a storage computer. I went and bought a ATA100 IDE hard drive with 500GB of storage. Previously this same computer had a 200GB drive that had absolutely no problem and it is now in my newer machine.

Anyway the install went fine and I had no problems installing XP on it. It recognizes all of my hardware and there were no errors whatsoever.

The problem comes from the fact that my system recognizes only 127GB of the very large hard drive. I Googled the problem and found that I had to enable the 48 bit LBA support from the operating system and from the BIOS. Okay so I did the first one and there was no problem on that end. Of course it's still not showing the rest of my hard drive still and I'm stumped.

    So my questions are thus:

How can I find out if my BIOS supports 48 bit LBA? Is there something I need to do to enable it in the BIOS itself?

If that's not possible on my BIOS, is the next step an ATA controller card? If it is, what am I looking for exactly if I purchase one? Any advice or suggestions on this would be great. Thanks!

  20. Mysterious copy text property on HTML form fields

    Hey there--

I noticed that when I highlight and carry a piece of text in Google search from one field to another, the action only copies the text there instead of moving it. (As seen in the image below.) I'm curious how one can do that using CSS. Does anyone have an idea?
