viruses ruin my life
Date: 09/29/07
(Computer Help) Keywords: software, browser, virus, google
A pox on virus writers. Damn you all, you complicate everything needlessly and should suffer accordingly! But you won't, which is the greatest injustice!
Anyway. I got some virus protection software from Verizon, my ISP. Ever since then, when I click the "send" button in my browser as I'm composing emails with gmail (google mail), *nothing* happens. Other than the little depression graphic for the actual button looks like its being activated. But it LIES! Cause as I've said, nothing, in fact, happens. As in, the mail is not sent.
Anyone know a fix for this? I've tinkered with the software, and haven't found a way to resolve this. I'm guessing its just a pesky setting, but I'm uber annoyed and if anyone has a fix I'd be much obliged. If not, I'll be satisfied with some sympathy. ^_^ I'm also open to the possibility that it might not be the software, and just a coincidence with something else, but I'm skeptical. I think the virus software is by far the most likely culprit.

Windows XP Media Center
Date: 10/04/07
(Computer Help) Keywords: google
Okay, I need to get my hands on Windows XP Media Center Edition. Where can I legally / lawfully purchase such a thing? I found it on Amazon.com (Googled it) and found it for as little as $120 and as much as $450. I figure there can't be such a huge price difference, so the $120 one must be illegal, right?
I need to reinstall Windows XP Media Center on my computer so then I can get the restore disks from Sony to restore my Vaio laptop to factory settings (long story, don't ask) so I can have it back in working order again.

Google mojo comes from open source management

Google is so large that its many small failures can't harm it, and its people remain empowered by its open source management style. Microsoft could still behave in a similar fashion, but will its corporate culture allow that?

HP Officejet 7400 series and Firefox issues - Please Help!
Date: 10/14/07
(Mozilla) Keywords: google
Howdy
So my grandfather is having an issue with his HP Officejet 7400 when trying to print out of firefox. I've checked for updates with firefox but he's running 2.0.0.7 and there doesn't seem to be any other updates available. He's never had a problem printing out of FF before, but now he is.
He can print in I.E., Word and every other program just fine, but not in firefox. I've googled for issues linked between the two, but nothing other than Vista issues (we're on XP Pro here) came up. Does anyone know what's going on? Should I just downgrade a few updates in FF or just tell him that for now he's stuck with I.E.?
Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks a lot!
OH! I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that there's an error message that pops up when printing.
"System Error
The document cannot be printed due to a system error.
Try printing again. If unsuccessful, restart Windows and try printing again."
Bullshit - that doesn't work. I've restarted this computer a thousand times.
Thanks again!

deterministic finite state machines and regular expressions

(Algorithms) Keywords: google
Hi. I'm looking for an algorithm that can be used to translate a finite state machine directly into a regular expression without an intermediate step of a non-deterministic state machine. It's not necessary to get a direct explanation -- if you know of a good site for explaining said technique, would you please post it? There's a certain inefficiency in separating the wheat from the chafe in google searches on the matter.

Stuff working in safe mde, not in normal.
Date: 10/23/07
(Computer Help) Keywords: software, browser, java, security, virus, antivirus, spyware, yahoo, microsoft, google
I keep having bizarre computer problems, yet I can't detect any viruses, and the only spyware I had was a couple tracking cookies I get from time to time and I deleted them.
Earlier Word wouldn't open, now it will. Sometimes Spybot and Ad-aware will open, sometimes not. Semagic won't open, I get an error message that says "Can't enumerate device." I've gotten the same error when trying to open Word, but now it works.
And sometimes the things that won't open give me an error message that there is not enough memory to run it, even though I have plenty and recently defragged.
I started my computer in safe mode and everything was peachy. I opened Fix-it Utilities, ran some scans and a registry de-frag, as well as running ad-aware and spybot again. All clean. Restarted the computer in normal and tried to open Fix-it, just to test. Still doesn't work. Neither does Semagic and a couple other random things. And randomly, my internet browser fails. Weather I'm in Opera, IE, or Firefox...they all do it. Half the text and images vanish, some look like they are on top of each other. I don't understand.
I'm pretty sure it must be one thing causing all of this, because it all started two days ago together.
Any ideas?

The universe might be expanding but the tech universe is shrinking. Just as Oracle and SAP are dividing up what's left of value in enterprise software, Google and Microsoft are in competition to dominate the advertising and social networking spaces, with Yahoo trailing behind. The path to domination, or at...

Ok, we've got a form where people put in their first name, last name, email address, and a five digit number. On the confirmation page, we want to return to them: the first initial of their first name and full last name and then the first initial of their first name, first initial of their last name, and the five digits they put in.
For example, if I entered:
First Name: Brittany
Last Name: Jackson
5 Digits: 12345
I would want returned:
bjackson
bj12345
We are using Javascript for it, and where it previously worked, it suddenly stopped working. Thanks to all of your wonderful suggestions and help, I now have it working in Internet Explorer, Opera, and Safari, but it won't work in Netscape or Firefox and I'm not sure why. I have searched and googled it, but haven't come up with an answer.
On the form page, the javascript we have in the header is (with the script type="text/javascript" in the appropriate < >'s, of course:
//script type="text/javascript"
function verify(forms) {
var errors='';
if ((document.forms.first.value == "") || (document.forms.last.value == ""))
errors+="Please enter your first and last name.\n";
if (errors){
alert(errors)
return false;}
fa = document.forms.first.value.charAt(0);
la = document.forms.last.value.charAt(0)
var len;
var aryText = new Array()
var hyp = "";
if (document.forms.last.value.indexOf ('-') != -1) {
len = document.forms.last.value.indexOf('-')
for (var i = 0; i < len) i++; {
aryText[i] = document.forms.last.value.charAt[i];
hyp = hyp + aryText[i];
}
document.forms.username.value = fa.toLowerCase() + hyp.toLowerCase();
}
else if (document.forms.last.value.indexOf (' ') != -1) {
len = document.forms.last.value.indexOf(' ')
for (var i = 0; i < len) i++; {
aryText[i] = document.forms.last.value.charAt[i];
hyp = hyp + aryText[i];
}
document.forms.username.value = fa.toLowerCase() + hyp.toLowerCase();
}
else{
document.forms.username.value = fa.toLowerCase() + document.forms.last.value.toLowerCase();
}
document.forms.code.value = fa.toLowerCase() + la.toLowerCase() + document.forms.ssn.value;
return true;
}
//
The words after form relate to the fields in the form.
And then in the body, under the start of the form class we have (obviously these would have the start and end tags (<>):
form class="forms" name="forms" action="apply.asp" method="post"
input type="hidden" name="code"
onchange="javascript:this.value=this.value.toLowerCase();" /
input type="hidden" name="username"
onchange="javascript:this.value=this.value.toLowerCase();" /
On our confirmation page/asp page we have:
//
Name |
Username* |
E-mail Address* |
Code |
---|
<% Response.Write(first) Response.Write(" ") Response.Write(last) %> |
<% Response.Write(username) %> |
<% Response.Write(username) %>@oursite.org |
<% Response.Write(code) %> |
