1. Google Web Accelerator: An Alert for Web App Designers

Date: 01/01/70 (Webmaster View)    Keywords: java, web, google

    37 Signals says:

Google is essentially clicking every link on the page -- including links like "delete this" or "cancel that." And to make matters worse, Google ignores the Javascript confirmations. So, if you have a "Are you sure you want to delete this?" Javascript confirmation behind that "delete" link, Google ignores it and performs the action anyway.

We discovered this yesterday when a few people were reporting that their Backpack pages were "disappearing." We were stumped until we dug a little deeper and discovered this Web Accelerator behavior.

  2. One doubt about php_dev

Date: 05/07/05 (PHP Development)    Keywords: php, rss, web, google

I found a website in Google which fetches the LJ content of '[info]'php_dev, is it the official site of PHP-Dev Community?

If it is so, then i'll suggest some changes in that website and we can try the code i wrote in my earlier post. Also we have many efficient web designers in this community who can design that site very nicely.

BTW, did anyone find the solution to identify the LJ-Cut? What '[info]'acidofil wrote against my earlier post about Lj-Cut, am afraid that LJ-cut can't be recognised in that way through RSS. If anyone can give the code then it'll be helpful

  4. Help Me! Please!

Date: 05/06/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: web, spyware, google

OK, now a few months back, this site started popping up for no reason, no matter what. It pissed me off so I ran adware and spyware checks and cleaned everything out. But it still din't stop. It kept popping. So then just recently I decided to search for the name of the website on google. Turns out it's a big "hijacking" thing and there's a way to remove it. It's called sgrunt. The point is, the help that was offered and the solutions were very confusing and it was pretty much for the computer literate, which I'm not. So if anyone knows about this and can help me in a simple way, please please. This is becoming very annoying and distrubing and...I just hate it.

Again, it's called sgrunt. So if anyone can help me. Please do!

  5. problems after getting new ISP

Date: 05/05/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software, web, google

I'm so glad I found this community =)

Last Friday, I finally received the modem from my new ISP (Bell Sympatico DSL, if there are any Canadians out there familiar with it). I installed the modem on my laptop first, since we didn't have a long enough phone cord to reach to my boyfriend's desktop. Everything worked really well, the service was fast and there were no problems.

Then I installed the modem on my boyfriend's desktop, and hooked up a wireless router. Since then certain websites like Google, Gmail, Hotmail won't load for us at all. He's not having any problems sending or receiving email through Outlook Express, but I can only receive. I've checked all of my email settings, and they're all fine. Some sites are loading very quickly (livejournal is doing well, but a forum and my local newspaper are annoyingly slow)

Any idea what might be up? Mostly why certain wesbites won't load, others are really slow, and some are fine. I never had problems at all before I got Sympatico. I checked out their website to see if there was any information, but most of the stuff is decently useless. As is the "Net Assistant" that came with the software. I'd love to avoid calling customer support, becuase I'm moderately tech-savvy and I really hate being treated like a complete idiot over the phone.

    Thanks in advance =)

Date: 05/11/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: google

Okay, I should be able to figure this out. I have googled for an answer, and have followed most of what i thought were valid fixes ie: Install newest driver, uninstall/reinstall, plug into the same USB slot every time, but I still get this

    Image hosted by Photobucket.com
The external runs fine, but it always asks me to install this SCSI Adaptor. It is annoying, that I have to hit cancel and then get this little msg.
    Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Lower right hand corner, but as you see the hard drive is recognized and ready.
Before, when I had this problem, I also had Norton Ghost installed, and this seemed to make my system crash out. Maybe it was ghost, but I had ghost on and all the hardware for the External removed and it ran fine, it just wasnt able to send the image to anything since this is a laptop with only one hard drive.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks for your time!

Date: 05/14/05 (Java Web)    Keywords: web, google

  11. Help with Date fields on a form

Date: 05/18/05 (PHP Community)    Keywords: mysql, database, sql, web, google

    This is driving me nuts.

I've got about a dozen different forms on my website that all have a date field of some sort, whether it be news date, dob, etc.  All of them are used to insert data into a mysql table.  I've got the corresponding fields in the table set as "DATE" fields.  But I'm having issues getting the date to convert properly.

Since the format of a mysql date field is YYYY-MM-DD, I have to do some converting in cases where I need to retrieve the date from the table.  For example, if I'm showing somebody's date of birth, I pull the info from the table and then use date() to convert the date to MM-DD-YYYY.  As in $dob = date("m-d-Y", strtotime($dob)); where $dob is the date pulled from the table.

    The problem is changing that date and updating the table. When stuffing the date back into the table, I've gotta convert it back to YYYY-MM-DD, so then I use $dob = date("Y-m-d", strtotime($_POST["dob"]));

Works fine unless the date is entered on the form with / instead of - as a separator.  So what this leads me to discover is that on forms where the user enters the date, they could enter it any number of ways.  Even if I specify that they use dashes instead of slashes, there's no way to guarantee that they will.  That means that my date in the table will only be correct some of the time.

So what can I do to the date fields on all of my forms to ensure that no matter how the user enters the date, it will be converted properly to YYYY-MM-DD and stuffed into the table?

The best answer I could find on google was using dropdowns for month, day and year.  That would be fine on forms where the date is being entered for the first time.  But it would be a huge pain to implement on "edit" forms where the fields are populated from the database when the form loads.

I'm about to start pulling my hair out here, so hopefully somebody has a good idea.  I'm open to nearly any suggestion.

  12. Fedex shipping calculator in PHP?

Date: 05/21/05 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, java, google

Hi, I need to set up a Fedex shipping calculator in PHP for work. I was looking around the Fedex Ship Manager API, but it says it only supports Java, C/C++, VB and JScript. I've also searched Google to try to find a solution, but to no avail (all the "solutions" I found did not work). This seems like it should be a very simple problem. Does anyone know if there is already a simple solution available or if I could reverse-engineer a script in another language? Thanks in advance for your help!

  13. PHP + MySQL Paging

Date: 05/23/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, mysql, sql, google

Well, it turns out this whole PHP and MySQL project was a heck of a lot easier than I thought.

I have hit one hitch, though. I've looked all over Google for an easy script for using paging with my SQL queries. When all is said and done, this table I'm going to have will have somewhere around 5,000 entries, so I really need to enable paging.

Problem is, all the scripts I've found won't work.

I'm using a somewhat complex SQL statement (it's not just a SELECT * FROM TABLE kind of thing), and I've got all my query display and search functions working correctly. I just need this paging thing to work. I understand the general idea of how the whole function is supposed to work, but I keep getting errors.

If anyone can give me any help at all, I'd really appreciate it. I've totally resorted to cut-and-pasting code and just modifying the SQL statement to work with my existing tables, but it still won't work. I can post code portions if necessary..

    Thanks in advance.

  16. best forum for coldfusion developers?

Date: 05/31/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, software, java, web, google

Hi folks, new to the community, and new to ColdFusion - however I have many years of experience in software development and web design using other languages and technologies.

I've checked out the excellent ColdFusion links in the community userinfo, and beyond those I was wondering - where's the best online forum out there for ColdFusion developer brainshare?

I saw the one at Macromedia's own site, it was okay but not very impressive. Coming from other development communities like PHP and Java I was wondering if the ColdFusion community is just much less talkative, and that's as good as it gets? Also I'm usually leary of forums run by software manufacturers, as sometimes they are questionably moderated when critcism gets posted.

Anyways thanks in advance for any reccomendations. Serious CF developers only please - I can Google for random sites all by myself. I'm wondering what the "pros" prefer.

  18. Google Sitemaps

Date: 01/01/70 (Webmaster View)    Keywords: xml, web, google

Google Sitemaps is a new experiment by Google. Web site owners can place an xml-formatted sitemap on their webserver and notify Google.

By placing a Sitemap-formatted file on your webserver, you enable our crawlers to find out what pages are present and which have recently changed, and to crawl your site accordingly.

My Sitemaps page will show information about downloading and processing of your sitemap by Google.

Google also offer Sitemap Generator, an open source client in Python to create sitemaps. Sitemap Generator can create sitemaps from URL lists, webserver directories, or from access logs and notify Google.

Create a new index template with the following code: <$MTEntryPermalink$> <$MTEntryModifiedDate format="%Y-%m-%d"$> .

Screenshot of creating new Movable Type template

    Save and build the file.

The above code creates a Google sitemap file containing individual entry links. If you want category archives links and date-based archives links you can add them easily using MT Template tags. Your sitemap file may not be larger than 10MB.

Now you can submit your sitemap to Google through your Sitemaps account or using an HTTP request to the following URL: http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/ping?sitemap=http://url_of_your_/sitemap.xml

There are two more tags you can put inside : changefreq (how frequently the content is likely to change) and priority (priority of the page relative to other pages on the site).

    Example:
    daily
    0.3.
