Help with Dell error codes, and troubleshooting
Date: 06/05/05
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: google
For anybody with Dell motherboard diagnostic light knowledge:
Short and sweet story on my Dell, After lightning storm, the computer would turn on, but would not perform a POST on the system, and thus wouldnt boot my system. I noted the following diagnostic light code, and pulled my hard drives of the machine so hopefully they wouldn't be damaged anymore than they have
A-green
B-yellow
C-grn
D-grn
I've been in the Dell knowledge base, and it made no mention on what that code meant. I did a couple of googles, but I didnt see anything relating to the above code.
To note, the night before I lost the PC, the system rebooted, and BIOS gave me a "missing primary partition error" (or something to that effect, I was groggy and couldn't read the lines straight, nor remember them clearly if I did read them correctly) It gave me the option to continue hitting f1, did so, and the computer booted normaly.
And to that note too, I switched out hard drives, just to make sure it's not attributed to a fried disk, still no post (if you really think about it, a fried hard drive shouldnt really interfer with starting of the post test, unless that my prior training was wrong...)
I'm not a complete pc guru, nor am I an idiot. I don't care that some of the readers like or hate Dell. For right now this is my primary system, and I am basically broke, so please no caustic comments or responses. Let me just ask my question, and hopefully someone with greater resources could help me.
Thanks for any assistants given.

how to mirror lj entries?
Date: 06/06/05
(Web Development) Keywords: php, java, web, google

Does anyone know how I can mirror
my journal entries onto my own website?
I do believe it can be done (in real time, not c+p),
but need to know what type of code must be used,
(php or what?), +where to start.
(I can google the rest + hopefully learn to do it.)
If it can be done in java script, I was able
to find (+use!) tons of free code offered online.
I'd also like to build in a "random generator"
but haven't yet found this code in either php or java..
Many thanks to anyone who can give me some suggestions!

Join question
Date: 06/07/05
(MySQL Communtiy) Keywords: mysql, sql, google
I have two tables. They both use the same user ids. I need to compare the tables and get all the rows in table A that aren't in table B. I suspect I need a JOIN. I have read the MYSQL.com stuff on joining, and I've tried to find other tutorials on this, but I'm not having much luck finding something that addresses the issue. If you have advice, links or at least good Google search terms, I'd be most appreciative.

XP + USB2 = headache
Date: 06/13/05
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: linux, google
Hi folks,
I am having a problem with XP and USB2... basically, whenever i plug anything into a USB2 port I get a BSOD, but USB1 is fine. I thought maybe it was the windows halflife problem so I have tried it again with a fresh install.
If I have a completely clean system, ie installed off the disk with no service packs installed USB2 works fine, but as soon as I patch up to date (sp2 + all the other patches) the problem comes back.
It works on a fresh install so I don't think its a hardware fault... I'm guessing it must be one patch somewhere along the line that kills USB2. I have searched the knowledgebase and googled for the problem but i'm not really coming up with any leads... any ideas (other than to get rid of windows and install linux on the box - which is almost a possibility since I dont play games anymore)?
I can't recall whether i may have asked about this before, so forgive me if i'm repeating myself... :)

New to FireFox....
Date: 06/13/05
(Mozilla) Keywords: browser, web, google
I just installed Firefox today and everything seems okay but i have a few questions, maybe someone can help me out here.
1. I use MSN Messenger and whenever i receive an e-mail on my Hotmail account i get a little pop up letting me know. When i click the pop up it takes me to my e-mail. The problem is that it opens/uses IE instead of Firefox. Is there anyway of making MSN open Firefox and not IE? I made Firefox my primary web browser if that helps any.
2. Is Firefox compatible with Window Blinds?
3. Firefox has a google search thing at the top and whenever i use it to search the search opens in the window/tab i am using, is there a way to make it open a new tab?
Hope to get help soon. Thanks.
T.

I've tried looking in PHP and MySQL docs for this, and just regular google searches, and I'm coming up nil. (Despite being fairly sure I found this the other day.)
I have a date (YYYY-MM-DD), a length, and a length type (day, month, or year). I want to add the length to the date to get a new date. How do I do this?

be your own isp

(Computer Geeks) Keywords: google
I have a question. Recently I was thinking that it would be quite cool if I could become my own ISP. I would like to be able to set up a dial-up server and allow my parents and some friends to use me as their ISP. Presently I have 6mps+ up and down and I do not need all of that all of the time. Thus I was thinking tha ti could use an old box to serve out sme of that to them. I have several questions
1. would my ISP and my phone company kill me for this. I will not be receiving any renumeration for this but I am simply giving them free dial-up
2. where could I find information on doing this?
3. Is this like setting up a VPN?
4. What would I need to do this successfully?
I am throughly courious and I would love to be able to do this legally and feel free to point me in the right direction on google or where ever

DVD-R / DVD WRITER HELP NEEDED
Date: 06/18/05
(Computer Help) Keywords: software, web, google
my computer has a dvd writer, but i've never used it. i've had the computer for over a year, so i figured it was about time. yesterday, at target, i picked up some cheap "e-gear at target record: dvd-r" discs. i made this fun dvd with some software (arcsoft showbiz2) on my computer. i went to put in the disc, but this is where the problem is/starts.
i put one of this blank dvd-r's in the "hp dvd writer/cd-writer combo". (i've used it as a cd-writer, but never as a dvd writer, like i said before.) this cursor/icon (it's a pointer with a small cd beside it) appears for a moment, but that's all that happens. when i look at the drive under "my computer," it just says "dvd/cd-rw drive." the properties have it named as HP DVD Writer 300n. everything appeared to be working normally under the properties, but nothing is recognizing these discs. so, i (re)installed the drivers. i restarted the computer, and it said "new hardware installed--dvd writer" or whatever. so i'm pretty sure the computer is recognizing the dvd writer. (but i could be wrong, because i've never used it before.) because of this, i'm lead to assume that the media is "bad." i tried multiple discs, but all of them have done the same thing. i googled the discs though, and i found a few websites where people acted like they worked.
what do you all think is wrong? do you have anything else for me to try? (if it's the dvd-r's, do you know if target will take them back? lol) i'm sort of upset, because i was excited about my first dvd (which i had a fun time making, btw).
also....i'm running windows xp, service pack 2. i really appreciate any help you can give me. thanks!

First WordPress, then Syndic8 and now Financial Times! Link Spammers Demonstrate Upward Mobility

First we had WordPress which sported tons of hidden spammer links by ingenuous use of negative CSS positioning. Then Syndic8 decided not to be left behind and joined the fray. Google annoyances
Date: 06/22/05
(WebDesign) Keywords: google
I like Google. It brings in far more visitors to my site than all the other search engines and links put together! There are a couple of things which cause trouble for me and my site though.
Partial indexing, like this Google Search of The Warp Zone. My entire site was crawled and indexed by Google within a few days of the site launch, but now half of the pages have disappeared from the SERPS, and the rest have been totally stripped of their descriptions and titles. All the newsgroups suggest this is caused by DNS problems, but I'm not convinced, as I've never known my site or it's services to have any downtime. My pages were all crawled and downloaded fully, and Googlebot visits me around once a fortnight. Does anyone have any better suggestions as to why this happens to my sites (and many other people's sites) every few months?
The other problem I have, is that when my pages do appear properly in Google, they are often very out of date despite being crawled recently. Google seems to revert to old versions of my pages. It still has a cache of a page on one of my other sites, which was completely redesigned nearly three years ago! In fact it has been redesigned twice since the version which appears in the Google cache. The page in question has been crawled thirteen times in the last five months alone...

Drive Mapping in Windows XP
Date: 06/23/05
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: microsoft, google
My client has a brand spanking new XP box that I built, & installed the OS on. I did not install XP in the traditional boot from cd way. Instead I Ghosted from an image server we have here after using an OEM preinstall disk & installing all of the drivers, programs, etc. I know I used the correct image, and all of the drivers & programs were installed correctly. He needs to map a drive so that he can retrieve programs, etc. from it. Unfortunately, when he right clicks on My Computer & selects "Map a Network drive" it does absolutely nothing. No matter which way we try to map the drive, it still won't do anything.
I really am not sure how I can fix this, and can find nothing on Microsoft's knowledgebase or Google that pertains to troubleshooting this kind of problem. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Question
Date: 06/26/05
(WebDesign) Keywords: html, web, google
Hey, I have two basic web questions. The first is, how can I have my site refresh everytime someone visits? Whenever I'm working on quick updates or fixing typo's, I want to make sure that they constantly get the latest. Second question, for my site, I use only the meta description which is posted on my dreamweaver template. Thus, on every site, it contains the same description. Googlebot or MSNbot is only crawling on the index.html -- nothing else. What gives?
Here's my site so you can look for yourself.
Thanks

My apologies, but...
Date: 06/26/05
(SQL Server) Keywords: database, sql, microsoft, google
Hello everyone. I apologize in advance for being the typical newbie at this sort of thing, but I don't really have a choice. I just landed a new summer job at an Embassy and I really need some help.
I have been giving the task of sorting out maps in my department. I'm to build a database where I index all of the maps so that people in the Embassy can have easier, more organized access to them. However, I have never, ever done anything like this before and unfortunately I am stuck with Microsoft Access (I've already been told that SQL is far superior to MA). Believe me, I would switch to SQL in a heartbeat because I have heard that it is more user-friendly, but MA is what I've been given to work with and I cannot download anything onto my computer.
So far I've set up tables and created a couple of forms. I've probably already done something wrong just through that. I realize that people take courses to learn how to use MA and it's going to take more than a few LJ comments to help me get through this. What I was hoping you guys could direct me toward are some detailed MA tutorials online. I'm having specific problems trying to understand what 'queries' are and how to set up a main switchboard. The purpose of this index is to serve as sort of a search engine to look up these maps, and I don't know how to do that.
So if anyone has any links to tutorial sites, hopefully more specific to what I'm trying to do, that'd be great. I've already Googled for help and I've found a few tutorials, but I'm hoping for even more help.
Sorry about my sob-story. I'm really in a bind here. MA is making me feel really, really unintelligent.

Software synchronous detection

Well, without preludes :)
I need a software synchronous detection algorithm. I have been searching Google for already about a week but found nothing but mentions of using synchronous detection here and there; almost in all cases it was analog and implemented in hardware.
Please someone point me to the right place where to find any information about this!

The frustration of unit test
Date: 06/27/05
(C Sharp) Keywords: google
I like unit tests. It's cool to be able to try out little bits of your code, and make sure the small parts work before you try making it do larger things. It's good stuff.
But by god - does it have to be so poorly documented?
In this case I'm looking at NUnit.Util. This is part of the standard NUnit install, and it contains a bunch of classes - and no documentation on them. I've done searches through google - no documentation found.
Does this stuff get used?
What I needed: A way to trap output that is supposed to go to the console so I can make sure that something that writes to it is actually writing what I wanted.
What I eventually did: I took the NUnit.Util.ConsoleWriter, and inherited from it as below. Then, I passed it in as a TextWriter, which my console app would write to.
using System;
using System.Text;
using System.IO;
using NUnit.Util;
namespace moCSCXIImport.Tests
{
///
/// Summary description for MockConsole.
///
public class MockConsole : ConsoleWriter
{
private StringBuilder TextBuffer;
public MockConsole(TextWriter console) : base(console)
{
TextBuffer = new StringBuilder();
}
public override void Write(char c)
{
TextBuffer.Append(c);
base.Write(c);
}
public override void Write(String s)
{
TextBuffer.Append(s);
base.Write(s);
}
public override void WriteLine(string s)
{
TextBuffer.Append(s);
TextBuffer.Append("\n"); // newline
base.WriteLine(s);
}
public string TextWritten
{
get { return TextBuffer.ToString(); }
}
public long GetTextLength()
{
return TextBuffer.Length;
}
}
}
But I'm sure someone's done something like this before. But why couldn't I *find* it?
