1. Killer Plugins for Firefox

Date: 04/12/05 (Java Web)    Keywords: google

Few killer plugins which will provide you key functionalities you enjoyed with IE and then add some great functionalities for Firefox. The best productivity boosters for Firefox I have seen and tested. One of the reasons I still kept IE around was because Google provided Google Toolbar for IE only. With PR Google Bar that requirement [...]

  4. sony vaio laptop sound issue

Date: 04/13/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: spyware, linux, google

I know how frsutrating it is when people post about issues and expect free support or have not googled the problem. Therefore I have exhausted both options to the best of my abilities.
Presently I possess a Sony Viao PCG-FXA53 with a 1.3ghz processor, 786mb of SDRAM, 40 gb (fat-32) HD, and Windows XP Pro. Everytime I play sound on my computer it sounds like a CD skipping and the sound is garbeled and distorted if anything besides the music player is running. Also whatever media player I use will uses at least 51% of my system Rescources. I have tried windows media player (9&10), Windows media classic, xmplay, winamp, and even real player. All of them do this. Therefore I thought it was an issue with something else on my computer. I have scanned for viriuses with (trend micro, avast, and AVG). All of them are current and found nothing, I have checked for spyware with Spybot Search and Destory and Ad-aware. In addition the only things in my startup are the necessary XP components and my A/V.  Naturally I used all of the latest updates of these computers. This problem has been existent for 3 years now and I have worked with Sony Continually on this issue. They said it was my HDD so they gave me a new one. This did not fix the issue. They stated I needed more RAM and this was not the issue. I have changed Windows Media Player and done a full FFR with the deletion of the MBR. After taking it to several tech places, doing reading online, and looking at the same model to see if it had the problem (it did not). I am now at my wits end. What is it? is it my on board sound card? or the driver?
if it is the driver what do I do?

The oddest thing is that: In my Linux partition of FC3, and Debian 3.3 I have no problems with the sound. Granted I have other issues but not the sound issue. In addition I have no trouble with it and Linux Live CD's.

Thank you so much for all of the wonderful help and support that you have supplied me with in the past. I appreciate your help in this manner.

  5. How to prevent robots (Google Bot, MSNBot, Yahoo Slurp! etc.) from displaying cached pages of your site

Date: 04/12/05 (Java Web)    Keywords: web, yahoo, google

Site Owners often detest the fact that google caches an old copy of their site and displays it on searches which brings up the site pages. A simple way to prevent robots (including Google, Yahoo etc.) from caching your site contents is to include the following within the head section of your web page.

Date: 04/15/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, css, html, web, google

I was just reading this explanation on google maps and thought this quote was interesting:

"I also think it bears noting that Google is pulling out all the stops to build rich web apps, no matter how weirdly they have to hack the browser to make them go. And I strongly believe that this is a trend that is here to stay -- XHTML Strict/CSS/etc be damned. At the end of the day, what really matters to users is compelling apps that let them get their work done quickly."

  8. Firefox Pros and Cons

Date: 04/15/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: software, browser, css, security, microsoft, google

I'm not really looking for an answer in this post, mostly just the community's thoughts.

The high school that I attend has internet access, like most other high schools now a days, but our computer tech seems to think that Internet Explorer is the browser of choice and won't even consider looking at anything else. He's dependant on Microsoft and can't really think outside of the box. Anyways, he told me that for him to do anything, the district would have to put Firefox (the browser that I'm pushing) on the "aproved software list". I can come up with several key "pros" that Firefox has over IE, but I was wondering if any of you could tell me some that I'm overlooking. Here's what I have:

    - Pop-up blocking
    - Correct CSS rendering
    - Tabbed Browsing
    - Increased stability (has only crashed once on me)
    - Increased security (in respect to its lack of security holes that have plagued IE since forever)
    - Easy access to various search engines
    - Constantly updated to fix security holes
    - Completely free

If I have any misinformation, I was just led to believe it from whatever source, so sorry about that. I tried mozilla.org for any other differences but couldn't come up with any.

Also, right before I posted this, I thought I should search google just one last time to pick up anything I might have left off. This site sounds very persuasive. Maybe I should send most of this article or a link to it to the District instead?

  14. PLEASE HELP!!!

Date: 04/23/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: php, software, browser, web, google

I have a few computer problems. If you can’t help me with all of them, that’s understandable. If you could just answer any of the questions, I’d really appreciate it.

    1) Tweak will let me set special folders but warns me about moving them. I'm assuming that this is really just a standard warning as I've moved the folders a few days ago and they all seem pretty harmless. (Including the Start Menu which I previously asked here and had a round robin suggestion. Anyways) Is it mostly harmless re-setting folder locations using programs like Tweak and/or TuneUP Utilities?

    2) I need to remove something off of "File" menu when you open a folder. It's driving me nuts. Well, I wouldn't mind if I could re-set the hot alt key. Does anyone know a program that controls what items appear on a folder’s File menu? Does anyone know a program that allows you to set “alt” letters?

    3) On Tuesday I downloaded Itunes. Ever since, the mp3s on my winamp playlist have gotten quieter and I don't know why that is. The wma’s play at normal volume on winamp but I have to turn up the volume way up to listen to any mp3. (almost like a throwback to my 2003 speaker problem.) As my playlist is a mix of both, I find myself constantly adjusing the songs. Does anyone know of software that checks what went wrong? I’ve already been in control panel sound and even system; all the drivers check out.

    4)
a - I guess it goes without asking that if I have an old win 95 deluxe edition of Norton, there's no way I could successfully install it and get live update to work, right? I'll just have to purchase a new version, right?

b - so, in saying that, what version of Norton includes crash guard and first aid. I love first aid. I've never had to do it but I love the idea checking everyday system functions.

    5) Start menu is driving me nucking futs. It keeps hiding programs i haven't used. i hate hate hate this. so i believe i turned this function off yesterday. I thought it was TuneUp but I guess not. How can I turn this function off.

    6) Tweak doesn't work when trying to prevent IE from stealing focus. I asked this question last month when i was still using win 98. I knew I'd be upgrading soon so I didn't fuss when the advice didn't do anything to help. Now I'm using win mx, i've installed tweak and yet again, it does nothing to prevent IE from stealing focus. Can anyone recommend another program that can help?

    7)
a - Internet Explorer has gone weird. I can't load lj userinfo pages correctly on the 3rd or 4th attempt. example, i open ie on my userinfo page and it loads properly. So whenever I say "new window" by doing ctrl n, instead of getting the "journal" menus at the top, i get < ************ > with the menus at the bottom. If i'm at download.com and i'm looking at my search results, i'll click on "by user rating". if at any point during this specific action i hit alt + tab to switch screens, ie crashes. no joke. so i have to sit and wait patiently while my slow 28kb connection loads that page. Has anyone else using XP experienced a similar problem? Is there an older version of IE that you think is better?

b - In addition, IE will sometimes automatically open a new window directing to a non-existing website: http://www.turbotones.net/uk/index.php . I will have hit ctrl + n ONCE (i don't do things twice) and my google search will have opened in a new window (whatever I was previously searching). After a few seconds, that page will open. I've searched all text in all files "word or phrase in the file" for "turbotones" to see who on my pc is asking to pop up to this page and this yielded no results. Can anyone help?

NOTE Please don't give me advice like "don't use IE" because that's not advice; that's just annoying. It's like saying "you shouldn't use automatic, you should use a stick shift" (or vice versa). Each browser has its own quirks and I've already gotten used to IE. In addition, I use IE at work, therefore I can mirror whatever I'm doing at work with what I'm doing at home.

    8) I want to remove "Local Area Network" from the system tray. There used to be a great program. I think it was simply sys_tray manager from a few years back. Does anyone have a copy? I also want to get rid of quicktime. I've uninstalled it but it's still lurking about. It's also in my system tray and it's annoying! Can anyone recommend a good, fast, free system tray manager program?

    9) Speaking of annoying, XP has reset the Page down/page up function to skip down/up "x" lines when using a drop down menu. I want to reset this figure. Does anyone know how?

    10) I have an old excel spreadsheet that i've opened. I've already said that the columns should be mm.dd.yy. for whatever reason (well, i'm based in the uk now not the us) excel has decided that despite my previously setting the column properties, it should be dd.mm.yy (the uk format) What other automatic changes should I look forward to (gulp) ? btw, language changes (example, us to uk) are easy to find in word. does anyone know where I can find it in excel?

    11) The last problem is quite generic. I have a few USB ports in the back that are working fine, but the ones in the front are fucked. I found under system, there's "code 28" error. I've searched for the drivers online but they are all no good. Initially when putting this PC together last Sat, it said something like "service pack #" with a link. Fair enough, I though. I didn't have a modem on me then so I couldn't connect my pc to the link. I just assumed that I'd get the link again. Well, I just made an ass out of me and me because lo and behold, I'm here trying to install the driver for the umpteeth time. Doesn't make a difference to me personally cause I have four in the back in working condition. The ports came with the tower and I don’t have a disk for the tower. Now I'm hoping someone out there has a link to driver installation file.
I was hoping this would help. But I guess not.

    12) I have to keep an eye on my hard drive temperature. I have 3 fans so hopefully it'll always be all good, but if not, what's a bad temp? currently, it's at 33.

Thanking you all in advance. Please let me know if you need further information!!!

  19. Let me introduce myself.... & then ask a question.

Date: 04/27/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: google

    Greetings,

I'm a geek. I started out on a TI-99 writing BASIC programs (first out of a book, then writing my own at the age of 3. Yeah, I couldn't type very well, more like a hunt and peck back then... but it got me there.)

I just wanted to introduce my geeky self before I asked this question. Get ready....

I have an Athlon 64, which right now is running windows 2003 server enterprise 64.... but my problem is that I can't find any applications that can utilize my cpu... I've done searches all over google, but to no avail.... Have any programs for the 64bit processors been written? If so, where can I get them? I'm not asking for pirated stuff, freeware or even stuff I could buy would be nice to know about. Also, are there any games that have been recompiled for these processors? It'd be nice to play some Doom 3 or Half-Life 2 with the full potential of this chip realized.

Thanks for any info anyone can throw my direction... I know it's a long shot.

  20. Backing up windows XP pro service packs and updates

Date: 05/05/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: google

Awhile ago I remember reading that it was possible to back up windows updates and service packs to a CD. Since I am back at College and I am on a dial-up connection I realized that I would like to do this in case of a crash so I do not have to spend the rest of my life re-downloading the updates. Also I would like to be able to do this so that i can free up Harddrive room. Is there anything special that I need to do or can I just copy C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$ and C:\i386 to a cd and than that is it? I can burn them to a CD than just simply double click the exe and be good to go? If not what files do I need to put SP2 and all other updates on a CD. I did try google however I did not know enough to turn up adequate results.
