cPanel or WHM
Date: 03/13/05
(IT Professionals) Keywords: software, web, hosting
I am looking for opinions on WHM systems.
I have a very limited hosting base right now and I can manage to maintain it for the most part.
I have used Webmin with restricted permissions to provide access in select cases, but I don't know if it is the most intuitive solution for non-technical folks.
I went to cPanel's site and they want an arm and a leg for the software.

PHP Form Mail

(WebDesign) Keywords: php, linux, hosting
Is there similar features in Linux to send form mail (I'm using MailEnable in my window hosting. I am still learning PHP ) or ready to go reliable PHP Form Mail code (besides Matt's form mail) ?
I found this http://phpfmg.sourceforge.net/home.php which looks quite good but haven't tested it yet.
Cheers

I wanna hear your opinions!
Date: 03/22/05
(Web Hosts) Keywords: software, web, hosting
So, I'm doing some work for a web hosting company in Austin, TX (www.webii.net) and we are doing some marketing research. I'm a LJ fan, so I thought I'd join this community and see what you all thought about web hosting in general, our site, our packages and offerings, ect. Please, let me know any comments you have, negative or positive.
Also, if you have a domain, what is it you like or don't like about your service. Is it cost effective. How does it compare with our rates? What software do you use? Would you consider switching to our services, why or why not? What do you think about Unix hosts as opposed to Windows hosts?
Thanks in advance!

oh man this is rich!
Date: 03/29/05
(Web Development) Keywords: css, html, web, hosting
So I left my old job a while ago, and since then a slew of people have "left". The bookkeeper (she was cool), the personnel/training/business relations director (another cool lady) and a few other people. That is not cool, but what the heck right? The public website (which should not be hard for you to figure out who I worked for or just ask) was something they had on the drawing board for what sounds like years; I got up an running. Me and my two hands. They had a graphic designer who had the design all ready made but made it work. I also took the intranet server and did something with it. Put documents on-line, created a calender (by hand), and had some nice things (like birthdays and anniversaries) on the main page. We were told by corp that they wanted out of the hosting business and we needed to move the public site to a new host. No problem, I back it up to a CD and hand it to the consultants since they did hosting also (side note, when ever consultants get involved, you are gonna get fired, it might take a while but it will happen). So for shits and grins I go look and see if the public site has had any updates, since when I was there getting content was like pulling teeth, managementwas too busy micro-managing to give content. The thing is that the public site (as of mins ago) had the html (but no images or css) of the intranet site; and corporate is still hosting it (netcraft & netsol confirm it). Thats just rich.

Hosting Options

(PHP Community) Keywords: php, mysql, sql, web, linux, hosting, apache
I am currently hosting my web site with powweb, the problem is that I am outgrowing its feature set. I’m working on some applications that need the MySQL InnoDB table type, or at least would find it very useful. Does anyone know of a hosting provider that supports the following:
PHP 5.0x
MySQL 4.1.x With InnoDB
Apache (1.3 or 2.0 would be fine)
Ideally running linux or BSD

need help/advice with ssl certs
Date: 04/20/05
(Web Development) Keywords: hosting
Since I'm usually more on the design end of things, I'm having a lot of trouble trying to figure out which type of SSL certificate I need and how to set it up. If this isn't usually covered here, please feel free to suggest somewhere else that I can ask or get some info on my situation!
Here's my setup: I've got a virtual private server, and I'm hosting multiple sites for multiple clients. I was told that "one certificate will cover an entire IP" which, originally I thought meant any sites on that IP, but now I'm realizing that doesn't mean exactly what I thought it did. If at all possible, I would like to avoid having to buy a seperate cert+ip for each client (mostly because the whole verification process is tedious and time consuming since these people don't know what they're doing).
So I'm thinking that now I might be able to just create a cert for my company and use that one for each of their sites. Is that possible? I've seen mentions of a Shared SSL Certificate but I can't really find any info on exactly what that is or how to use it, I'm just seeing "here's how to use ours!"
Thanks a lot in advance. :)

Suggestions?
Date: 04/23/05
(Web Hosts) Keywords: php, mysql, sql, web, hosting
I manage two domains, each under 10MB. For the past two years, they've been hosted with dr2.net, but then service got spotty and then they merged with Mesopia and the reviews got worse.
So, I'm looking to switch both domains to a new shared host. After checking out webhostingjury.com, I like the features of the standard plan of u-hs.com but the price seems a tad too steep. Looking for something in the area of $10 to $25 a year. One of the domains I expect to migrate to PHP and MySQL in the next few months.
Suggestions?

ALLOWS MULTIMEDIA (really important I've been searching around hosting sites, but the ones I'm finding doesn't allow it)

Virtual Subdomains
Date: 04/25/05
(PHP Community) Keywords: php, web, hosting
Hello,
I'm not sure if this question has come by before, but I was wondering if I could get some help creating virtual subdomains. I've searched everywhere over the Internet and have tried most things I've come accross but nothing seems to work.
Also I have contacted my hosting support who, I think, don't have a clue in how to do it. They also say that virtual subdomains are enabled but to create them you have to go through cPanel and a problem with this also is that it creates a directory in the root folder.
I'm just wondering if I would be able to get some sort of virtual subdomain automation. So as soon as a user signs up, they are able to access their page at "http://[username].website.com".
And also being redirected to their page internally like what mod_rewrite does.
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /journal\.php?action=view&user=[username] [L]
Something like that. But of course, the above example won't work.
Just wondering if anyone had any ideas or could help me get something working.
Thank you.

Beyond Weirdness: Windows 2000
Date: 04/28/05
(PHP Community) Keywords: php, mysql, database, sql, web, linux, hosting
I have a hosting company that runs Linux with PHP and MySQL through Plesk (a kind of server control panel) I can’t get into the control panel at work because I’m behind a firewall that blocks port 8443. I can, however use “my network places” in windows 200 to create an FTP connection to my server. The down side is: with FTP I can’t interface with the MySQL database… but, at least, I can upload and download files…Right?
Wrong.
This is the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen. The files I upload using FTP on my home computer or Plesk at home can be accessed from the web by typing the URL, but they do not appear in windows FTP flooder for the site. Yes, I have refreshed and restarted and connected and disconnected. They just don’t show up.
I can copy a file in to the FTP folder in windows… and it returns no error and appears to have uploaded correctly. But, if I type in the URL for the file the server says “file not found” I believe the upload is not working because when I go home and look in FTP on the other side of the firewall the file is not there! But, it appears to be there in windows. It was even there the next day. What on earth is going on!
Moreover, if I use a web-based FTP like http://01ftp.com/index.php it will show be a different set of files depending on what side of the firewall I’m on.
I can’t turn the firewall off but I’d like to, at least, understand why this is happening.
Why didn’t windows return an error when the file failed to upload? What if that file had been important? How can it show the file in the FTP folder for my site when it’s not really there? I think that’s a pretty scary and unreliable thing for an OS to do!
I think this might have something to do with actve and passive FTP... I'm reading up on it now... but honestly I don't have a clue.
The firewall is Mcaffe desktop firewall, and it's centrally controlled so no way to shut it off without being some kind of evil little haXX0r.
