PHP vs ASP
Date: 02/13/06
(Web Development) Keywords: php, database, asp, web, linux, microsoft, apache
I am responsible for implementing a new company intranet. I have experience setting up Drupal on my web host for my personal portfolio site, I set up the intranet on my G4 at work, but the Windows/IIS server causes all sorts of problems and the IT dept is unable to solve them, so there goes two weeks of work down the drain for me. I even asked them before I started if it was going to be a problem. Anyhow now they've set up Dotnetnuke and it is up but seems quite buggy, ie every 6th click results in a database error page. Yes I am definitely more of a front end designer and though I work mainly on Mac, by far an elitist (at least as far as OSs are concerned). Just for my own knowledge, what would the advantages over using Windows/IIS server/ASP vs Linux/Apache/PHP? A friend of mine suggests its just that most IT people learn the Microsoft stuff in school and that's what they stay with. Any insight would be appreciated.

SharePoint ignoring site groups?
Date: 02/14/06
(IT Professionals) Keywords: web, microsoft
Anyone have experience with SharePoint?
I am using the MicroSoft BI Portal Sample Application for Windows SharePoint Services. My site is something like http://myserver/bip
I have created 3 document libraries, one each for 3 different groups within the company (Marketing, Sales, and Finance). I have also created 3 site groups, so that each site group has access to only their document library.
All of the default groups remain in tact.
I have assigned users to each of the groups, some users are in multiple groups.
The problem is that some users cannot see any of the document libraries at all. They authenticate and are taken to the BI Portal site, but then can see no data beyond that. (They can see the web parts, but no data linked to those parts).
Other users, who are set up identically to the first users, can see exactly what they are supposed to see.
I have had users reboot, clear cache/cookies/history, and there is no change in behavior. I have even put some users into the administrators group to see if that would work, but still no change. It's as if SharePoint is ignoring the site groups for some users, and not for others.
Anyone have any ideas on how to clear this up?

strongly typed resources problem
Date: 02/15/06
(C Sharp) Keywords: microsoft
hiya.
I tried to use resgen.exe (/str:cs) to convert my .resx file into a nice class with get properties for all of my resources. I end up getting a MissingManifestResourceException whenever I try to access a resource from this class. It says it can't resolve the .resources file, even though I added it to and embedded it in my build.
Then I went the alternate route and used StronglyTypedResourceBuilder.Create("C:\\Documents and Settings\\bprice\\My Documents\\Visual Studio 2005\\Projects\\str\\str\\Properties\\Resources.resx", "Resources", "str", new Microsoft.CSharp.CSharpCodeProvider(), true, out errors); to generate the class. Now I don't know where it put the Resources.cs file(and I tried specifiying a path).
Any clues to how I can access my resources from either approach?
//EDIT//
These two tools are absolutely useless. My VP browsed the MSDN magazine and found you can do [proj namespace].Properties.Resources.[resource name], which accesses a get property of the resource.

Microsoft Exchange/Outlook Calendar Alternative
Date: 02/16/06
(IT Professionals) Keywords: microsoft
Hi
Our MD is putting pressure on me and my staff to start using Outlook as our standard mail client, chiefly so he can make us of Microsoft Exchange calendar features.
Obviously we'd rather mutilate ourselves with rusty breadknives than use Outlook to collect e-mails.
Is anybody aware of a preferably open source, or relatively cheap Windows XP based alternative (or failing that just an alternative, anything, please), that would allow us to interact with the Exchange calendar, whilst continuing to use regular, secure e-mail clients for sending and receiving e-mail?
I've had a look at Mozilla calendar (potentially quite useful as quite a few of us use Firefox and Thunderbird), but I don't think it's compatible.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Cheers.
Alex.

win32reg.exe problem

(Microsoft Windows) Keywords: cms, php, software, html, java, virus, microsoft, google, ebay
Yesterday, my roomy's 'puter kept freezing up. AVG found 2 viruses but it closed out and she didn't know what they were or where they went.
I attempted to run Ad-Aware but everytime it starts running, the computer restarts. So, I deleted all of the programs in the Control Panel that she didn't need, deleted the cookies, deleted all of the internet files she didn't need, restarted, and the computer seemed to work fine.
However, today she said "Win32reg.exe" keeps popping up a screen. I had already installed Google's Toolbar and so that is the same pop up blocker she uses. I ran Hijack This and got this:

Corrupt Word file?
Date: 02/20/06
(Computer Help) Keywords: microsoft
This has happened to my computer before and something fixed it... but I'm not exactly sure what, as my cousin fixed it before.
Anyway, when I try to open up a document on Microsoft Word (I have a Windows ME version computer), it takes forever to load and never does, and then a white box pops up and mentions something about it needing to be terminated, and system resources low. When I do CTRL+ALT+DELETE it doesn't work, and I have to end up switching my computer all the way off.
Now, uninstalling and re-installing word hasn't worked before, and it doesn't actually have anything to do with my system resources. I think my cousin mentioned last time something about a corrupt file...?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

HTMLview problems with WMP10 due to security updates?
Date: 02/21/06

Ok. This is a odd one...
In addition to running a web design firm, I also own a Classic Rock station. I've got a neat feature called "The 8 Track Player" which shows whats playing as well as the last 7 songs. This is a stand alone browser window that the visitor to the site opens.
This will also open inside Windows media player if a visitor chooses to listen to the station with that software (the station runs shoutcast natively).
until a week or so ago, the refresh code that I have was working fine in both stand-alone and Windows Media Player (WMP) but now the WMP does not refresh yet the stand-alone does.
Both stand alone and WMP use the same code, and there's not been any changes to the code.
The refresh method I am using is:
My theory is that MS has with a security update with Windows XP or WMP 10 changed something that does not allow the VB or Meta to work.
a) does anyone know something about this problem?
b) is there a good place to ask this in-depth question? Have posted on microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player.web already.
c) do you think my meta tag or vbscript have an error in it that was working before in WMP with HTMLView until a tightening of code control was implemented?
Thanks, Chris

weird BIOS/ACPI issue
Date: 03/01/06
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: virus, web, spyware, microsoft
Putting this out to a number of folks, in the hopes that someone can provide some insight:
Getting the following message, inconsistently:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*** STOP: 0x000000A5 (0x00000006,0x00000000,0x00000000) The ACPI BIOS in this system is not fully compliant with the ACPI specification. Please red the README.TXT for possible workarounds. You can also contact your system's manufacturer for an updated BIOS, or visit http://hardware-update.com to see if a new BIOS is available.
The BIOS in this system is not fully ACPI compliant. Please contact your system vendor or visit http://www.hardware-update.com for an updated BIOS. If you are unable to obtain an update BIOS or the latest BIOS supplied by your vendor is not ACPI compliant, you can turn off ACPI during text mode setup. To do this, simply press the F7 key when you are prompted to install storage drivers. The system will not notify you that the F7 key was pressed -- it will silently disable ACPI and allow you to continue your installation.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay, now..
The platform is a Dell Latitude C610, about five years old, with 1024M RAM in two parallel chipsets (512M each) -- this is the max. cap. for the stock system; HDD is an 80G (nom.) Hitachi. System is set up with triple boot: 1) Ubuntu (Breezy) -- default, 2) Knoppix (also 2nd-to-last stable build), and Win2K/Pro (heavily patched with Dell and MS). I mostly use the Win, because it supports my wifi card, as well as most multimedia. I usually do a complete purge and reinstall each year; this is about two months overdue right now, so there's some evidence of Windows artifacts I'm having. (I'm not including any of those here, since I don't believe they have anything to do with this issue, and because I don't see how Windows artifacts could affect the BIOS or system startup.) The multiboot is available through a selection interface provided under grub, which was installed under Ubuntu; grub replaced lilo, which was installed under Knoppix, as Ubuntu was installed last. Grub was installed in the MBR.
The message comes up most often on startup (or reboot), but sometimes without warning during use. The system halts completely, puts the message up, and that's it. It always requires a hard boot to get past it.
The issue may repeat a number of times in a row, and downtime does not seem to make any difference. Letting the system rest overnight may or may not work, and restarting it without rest over and over eventually results in a stable session. Just by example, this current session came after multiple restarts (most of them automatic, but quite a few also called, using the hardware switch), and this cycle of errors occured after many hours of downtime.
Following the instructions, I went to Dell's website, which provides excellent support. Dell confirms that my BIOS is fully up to date, and I would be awfully surprised if anyone other than Dell had a more current version.
Possibly related, I sometimes get this error, which only occurs at startup (or reboot):
"Memory write/read failure at [ADDRESS], read [VAL1] expecting [VAL2]. Memory address line failure at [same ADDRESS], read [VAL2] expecting [some other Value]."
The ADDRESS and VALs are different from one occurrance to another. I don't know if this indicates failure in a number of registers, or if it's just hitting an error by chance as it comes through some random register. If, as I suspect, a line spike is responsible, then there may be quite a number of damaged RAM registers. However, the inconsistency of the error, together with the fact that I can't imagine why it would seek different addresses at different startups (especially with no sessions in between), seems to argue against this. It would, however, be awfully convenient if the problem could be solved just by swapping out some RAM.
Now, these problems started right after the big blizzard we had. I suspect that a power spike might have frizzled some logic or memory hardware, or possibly corrupted some firmware. (It would be possibly useful, as a troubleshooting measure, to force a BIOS rewrite, but the interface in Dell's update patch detects the current BIOS ver. and won't allow a force overwrite. Don't know if a diff. ver. exists that would allow a forced overwrite, so unable to verify that BIOS is uncorrupted.)
The problem is not Windows-related; Ubuntu also fails on some startups, before the OS can launch, and sometimes after. (I haven't tried to see if Knoppix also suffers, but I have to assume that it would.) The errors occur most often at BIOS startup, before any OS is selected and launched.
Having said that, while the memory error (which is infrequent) always hits right at the very start of startup (before Setup is available), the ACPI message may occur at seemingly any time during system startup, OS startup, or normal use, so while it may involve a BIOS corruption, it's apparently unrelated to the startup sequence itself.
Malicious ware is not indicated: The system has repeatedly passed checks for viruses, spyware, adware, and rootkits.
It may or may not be related, in part or in whole, to some file corruption: I do regular cleaning and defrag, but for reasons unclear to me, there is substantial data that cannot be defragged. Thanks to some genius at Microsoft, more recent versions of Windows no longer provide a standalone DOS, and some DOS processes (e.g., chkdsk /f) cannot be run while Windows is running. I will try to do this from outside the OS, but I don't know how much luck I'll have. It's possible to instruct it to run these processes on next startup, but this is not working for me; I suspect this may be related to the grub multiboot process, which perhaps defeats automated pre-Win startup instructions. I will also try to investigate this, and any pointers are greatly appreciated. A nice chkdsk /f never hurts.
The problem is inconsistent; sometimes -- as now, for example -- the system behaves properly, sometimes for hours, sometimes all day and night, sometimes only for a few minutes. This leads me to some other theories, such as a possible physical circuit fault inside the box (perhaps triggered by some external event, such as atmospheric changes or some kind of vibration of cabinet motion); I can't help but wonder if the battery is involved in this.
I will try some other things to see if I can run this problem down, before I get to swapping out RAM or buying a costly new battery, but in the meantime I want to put this out to see if anyone can offer any insights that might save me a lot of time and effort (and possibly money).

I have one client who is starting up a Pilates studio and she's looking at http://www.pilatessoftware.com for her internal management. She would also like to have the website interact with it (ie. have members log in and register for classes, etc.) It seems that the network ready version of the Get Physical (pilatessoftware.com) uses FileMaker as it's underlying database. The FileMaker site has the following:
ODBC/JDBC source Exchange data with other applications via the ODBC/JDBC source support in FileMaker Server 8 Advanced. For example, you can replicate FileMaker information to other database products, use other reporting tools with FileMaker data, or build JSP or ASP websites based on FileMaker data, using popular tools such as Lasso Studio, Dreamweaver MX 2004, Adobe GoLive CS, and Microsoft FrontPage.
So it seems that I can get the info from the program but does anyone know if I'd be able to send info back to it? or is it a one-way channel?
