1. Beautiful Minimal WordPress Theme - Modern

Date: 12/19/05 (Java Web)    Keywords: rss

I came across a minimal and elegant theme from Ulf Pettersson. It has horizontal navigation with lots of white space, wonderful color selection. You can view it here (multi-page) and read about it here (single page) and download it here. Wonderfully done theme.

  2. RSS to MySQL

Date: 12/23/05 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, mysql, rss, database, sql

    Hiya,

I don't have a shell account and uploads via PHP are disabled on my server and this is why I'm looking for a robust RSS parser which feeds into a MySQL database. Since it's nearly impossible to install anything I'm looking for functions/classes I can use.

I have been able to get LastRSS to work but this does not use MySQL and writes to a directory. I need to leave that directory set to 777 - which is, clearly, no good.

I've lost faith in the RSS parser I wrote. It glitches too often.

    Does anyone have any recommendations?

  3. Firefox & RSS-Feeds

Date: 01/04/06 (Mozilla)    Keywords: rss, xml

I'm having troubles in adding RSS-Feeds into my bookmarks. Firefox won't show the RSS-Symbol on the sites, although they have RSS-Feeds. When I try to add the links manually they won't work. They are just... empty.

Here is a screenshot to show what I mean: Screenshot

The feed itself is a XML-File and I'm confused why it doesn't work, because the RSS from DeviantArt is XML too and that works fine. I have checked the settings of the other feeds and I can't see any difference between them (except the name and the URL).

I got the links from here: C64.sk (the entry from 4. January, 04:06 am, "RSS feeds of C= Homestead, C64.sk & Slay Radio")

    What is wrong there?

  4. Broadcast Help

Date: 01/13/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: rss, web

As a hugely important part of the group we currently run -- which you all may or may not know about -- I'm initiating a live-feed radio broadcast, which will be linked on our site, via RSS, and various other things. Out of all the options, I'd decided ages ago that Shoutcast was the best option... and so this morning, after our cable internet was finally hooked up and I'd gotten a decent broadcast mic, I downloaded the necessary items to get it running.

However, whether it's because my medication's making me brain-dead or because I'm just a doofus, I seem to be clueless about creating a server. Do I need to host it on my website... and if so, how can I do this? [Step-by-step would be nice... heh.] If not, am I missing something on the instructions? Is there a process I can follow?

And if these things are too complex or just a general pain in the ass, is there a better, free -- for now -- broadcasting utility, like Live365, that I can download and run for free, at least for the moment? We'd been trying to get this running by tonight, but argh, gotta love it.

    TIA, guys. ;)

[EDIT: Okay. I found the server download, and apparently it's running. *dramatic brow-wipe.* However, I'd still be EXTREMELY grateful for any help and advice -- more setup? How to create a "Listen" link from our site? How to run a broadcast live via mic? You pretty much get the idea. Thanks!]

    Hello!

    There's a new folksonomy software project - MyProgs.net.
You can store there list of programs you use, but the real point is something much more interesting:
You can easily find new / interesting / popular software in various categories, track after specific categories and many other things, like always knowing when your friend or colleague found another interesting program.
For example, here is my list: MyProgs.net/kuchin
There is also RSS support :)

  9. rss and css and oh my

Date: 02/08/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: rss, css, java

how can i apply stylesheets to outside rss feeds?

i'm using this to make the javascript needed to show an rss feed (... is that the best way? i'm oblivious) and because my body type is initially set to 62.8% (so i don't tear my hair out when trying to use EMs for font sizes) stuff shows up dinky. what I'm hoping is to set the output from the rss feeds with the same type I generally use for my bodytext (it also wouldn't hurt to remove those damn bullets that show up, too).

so how do I apply css to an rss feed? i want the font bigger and the bullets gone. that possible?

  10. slow server issue?

Date: 02/12/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: rss, xml, web

So I previously posted that issue with getting rss feeds to show up nicely on a website, and things are great save for the occasional happening of this:

Unable to open RSS Feed http://website.com/blog/index.xml with error Empty reply from server, exiting

...how do i make that happen less? or at least, in the event it does happen, not just give up loading the rest of the website?

along with that, it would be great if i'm more certain of what it even means. from the sound of things it means "we went to load this but it took too long and we gave up, sorry." is that the case?

  11. Oh help! Who should host my site?

Date: 02/18/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: rss, css, web, hosting

I've created a new website (Simple Vegetarian Recipes) as step one in trying to write a vegetarian cookbook. To make the site, I paid $299 for a service that does a whole bunch of stuff for you to help you submit it to search engines and the like.

Long story short (and I find it to be a funny story) I am on the brink of getting a refund and taking my site elsewhere. Except this service does a few things that I don't know how to do. Namely, they create and automatically update a sitemap for me, and they set up an RSS feed for me. They also use CSS, which I don't know how to do. I'm not sure how it's gonna work when I take my site somewhere else exactly. I know where I can go to get the site set up somewhere else, and fortunately, I don't even think too many links will break. Any recommendations on where I can take the site or how I can set this stuff up?

The short story is that the webhosting people are NUTS. Some lady put her site in a forum called "Submit Site for Review" and it was a terrible site and I told her that. Actually, I clicked on it hoping it would be great. It is about gardening. I wanted to bookmark it and use it as a primary resource in creating a garden. But it's a sales pitch with no content. The site drove me away and I told her why. She got all bent out of shape over it, and things kind of snowballed. I thought she would thank me for telling her why her site isn't doing well. That's why she asked to have it reviewed, right?

The owner of the company is now involved in all of this. It's like living in some altnerative world where everyone is crazy. I found a way to optimize the UI of the site and I put my suggestion into another forum. The woman with the bad gardening site found my post and put a link to the original post there, and lo and behold, the millionaire owner of the company found the thread and posted a reply. I really don't appreciate his patronizing attitude towards me. So now he's threatening to give me a week to move my site and then to refund my money - and I'm more than glad to take the refund and move. I just don't know where to go!!!

  14. RSS/RDS New Aggregator?

Date: 03/06/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: rss

Hello, I guess I'll preface my question by stating that I'm not too sure if I even know what I'm talking about here, but heck, it's worth a shot.

I currently write and keep a blog on the Boston Red Sox (SawxBlog.com) and had an idea. I'd like to create a site that's similar to below:

    http://redsox.feedster.com/

Basically what I'd like to do is subscribe to every and all Red Sox blogs and feeds and have them come up linkable, with a few sentences showing, much like the feedster example above. I'm looking to add a lot more blogs, as well as make the overall appearance more eye pleasing along with some original content. So that's what I want to do. Another site that does this is http://baseballblogs.org/.

From my limited knowledge I know that I'd need to somehow create a new Aggregator, and from that I'd get the URL's of the RSS/RDS feed. I am kind of in the dark on how to get this done, and was wondering if any of you have any experience with this, or if you know of sites/tutorials that I could walk myself through.

Sorry if this is vague, and thanks so much for any help that can be given.

    Cheers.

  16. Locale and strftime

Date: 03/08/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, rss

I need to produce date times in an ISO standard format for RSS feeds.

This requires the format to include month and day abbreviations (jan, feb, mar... mon, tue, wed) etc.

These must be in en_gb (same as en_us) format for the date format to be correct.

strftime insists on formatting to the locale settings, so I get things like

    Mi, 08 Mär 2006 14:42:05 +0100

Which is no use It has to be Mon, 08 Mar 2006 14:42:05 +0100

Is there anyway to do a getlocale so I can cache the old locale before calling a setlocale to override to en_gb briefly for the stftime operation then quickly set PHP back to the old locale for the rest of the processing?

Or do I really have to re-implement strftime in a locale-insensitive way?

    Cheers.
