  3. Intervideo WinDVD 5 Gold

Date: 09/24/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software

    Hey all.

Just hoping for a a few tips, maybe a little insight into a problem I'm having with WinDVD 5 Gold.

I purchased this software, own the original disc, and for the most part...the program works ok.

However, there are a few random dvds that, when played on WinDVD, the picture is completely black. There is audio, I can tell the menus are being navigated to, but just no picture. Ironically this only happens with my absolute favorite dvds - (Velvet Goldmine and The Adventures of Pete and Pete Season One *headsdesk*) Other dvds seem to play fine. NTSC and PAL formats both play fine...I can't really figure out what might be different with those two dvds other than I want to watch them more than my other ones. ;)

Now when I go to close WinDVD, there is a brief image of whatever should be visible - as in whatever screen the dvd has navigated to. Usually a main menu. But on restarting the program, nothing improves.

I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the program, but for some reason I get a "Socket Error" telling me that critical files are missing and to please insert the original disc for uninstall. Of course, I'm at a loss because I am using the original disc purchased retail.

Note: I don't know if this makes a difference, but none of the boxes under the "video" tab of my player's Setup are checked.

I've contaced Intervideo several times and they've proved only somewhat helpful. I'm really not looking forward to going through all that mess again, so I thought I might seek a few opinions here in hopes of solving my problem before diving into another long customer service quest.

If you need any details about my computer and such, just lemme know. I really appreciate the feedback.

    Thanks in advance!

  4. Random Geek stuff

Date: 09/25/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: software

I just got a copy of Macromedia Suite 8 (Including Flash, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and a few other lesser known software). I still have to learn how to use it of course, but I got time. As many of you know, I just love Macromedia products and teach courses in them for fun and a modest profit.

I just preordered some of the Macromedia Press Books from Peachpit Press. They say they're giving 35% off for those who preorder Macromedia Suite 8 books off their site. They also give 35% off if you register with them (the registration is free). So it's a total of 70% off their books. I'm in geek heaven right now :) I hope they don't figure this out and try to cancel.

However if you enter the promotional code, it's only 35% off, so check the receipt carefully before you place the order.

I'm looking at iPods and I'm seriously thinking of getting one this week. Yes there are cheaper and better devices out there, but the iPod is just so stylish and easy to use.

I have the following I'm seriously thinking of buying
    iPod (60GB) - Personalized
    iHome iH5 for iPod
    AppleCare Protection Plan for iPod

Eventually I'd get better headphones for them too, since the ones that come with it don't fit my earholes well.

Yeah that's right I'm even thinking of getting the extended warranty they call AppleCare. Granted their extended warranties are better than most, but it's still an extended warranty. I still remember how Homer Simpson got smart temporarily and was unhappy that way so Moe helped him get dumb again. To prove Homer was especially dumb again he said "Extended Warranty, how can I lose?". I'm thinking I must be brainwashed.

The Apple Store in Soho, NYC sells overpriced stuff so well, it's like being in a boutique. There's something in the air there as they seem to pump in some sort of "happy gas". They have a ritzy glass stair case and a Apple Theater where they do presentations on how to use their products. They even have Apple cult members they hire who all dress the same and tell you how much happier you'll be with Apple products. It's a little like a Hari Krishna trying to sell you a $2 flower for $5, but explaining to you how much happier you'll be if you buy it and they genuinely mean it.

The Genius Bar is a nice idea too. They have Mac experts there to help out people in a very stylish and organized way. They should serve overpriced drinks and snacks there too, but I guess they're worried it'll be harder to clean their equipment and store that way.

Unless someone can stop me and talk some sense into me, I may become one of the Pod People. Can anyone talk me out of this or at least make me feel better if I get an iPod?

  8. Google's New and Improved Firefox Toolbar

Date: 09/29/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: software, google

Annie Sullivan, Google's Software Engineer, has officially announced that after two months in beta, Google has released Firefox Toolbar with a couple of nifty Firefox-only features. One of these is the addition of Google Suggest, which shows useful query suggestions as you type in the Toolbar search box.

Attending the demand of many savvy Firefox users who wanted to be able to reorganize their Toolbar with Firefox’s Customize feature, in latest version of the Toolbar, you can go to the View--> Toolbars--> Customize menu to rearrange icons to your heart's content. You can even move the search box around! These goodies are not yet available for MS Internet Explorer.

Click here for more information about the new Google's Firefox Toolbar.

Note: The software requires Firefox 1.0.x and will not work with Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 (though it is expected that Google will make a version available for the final 1.5 release when it comes out later this year).

Ok, I'm a little frustrated right now.

I just bought aSony NW-DH3 and I'm trying to upload some songs on to the unit.
The wonderful software that came with it (Sonic Stage) tries to upload my Aphex Twin songs gets about 22% then encounters and error and shuts down. Also while sampling the songs it uploaded off my computer (on sonic software player) all of the songs sound very low in quality and some have replaced bass noise with an annoying standard sound, rather than the intended beat, noise whatever.

What the hell is going on here?

Do I have to use this software to upload my songs? Is there another way? A better way?

  13. Drawing Pen/Pad to computer?

Date: 10/03/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: software, web

    Hi,
I've been looking for hardware, that probably comes with software, to create what you draw manually through a "pen/pad" interface into a computer program. I haven't had luck at search engines because I get all kinds of random results because I can't put into two words or less what I'm looking for. I went physically to a store & they were like:"Oh we just sold our last one the other week, check back later", but didn't give me any specifics, and I went to their online store & didn't find any. I've seen the Logitech® io2™ Digital Writing System, but even on the Curcuit City website it gets a over 3.4 overall rating.

I just feel like I need to open my eyes to what's out there before I start spending money, because I know there has to be more products out there than what I'm finding. My birthday is in two weeks and I may get it then...that is if I can find it! Please help me communicate clearer to the correct name of this product, and more importantly, if you know any products, please recommend them.

    Thank you!
PS: My goal is to draw with it, not the "notetaking" part.
