Convert .wmv to playable DVD/VCD
Date: 09/10/05
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: software
I have a .wmv file of some video that I'd like to be able to put on a DVD or VCD so it can be watched using a regular DVD player. Windows Movie Maker will write it out to a DVD but the resulting disk will only be playable on DVD players that support something called 'HIMAT', which very few do and mine certainly doesn't.
The other software I've got needs a .avi file.
Can anyone reccommend any software that will either make a playable DVD from a .wmv or convert a .wmv to .avi.
Thanks

Firefox 1.5 Beta Looks Better Than Ever
Date: 09/11/05
(Mozilla) Keywords: software, browser, css, html, asp, java
Recently Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols published on eweek.com his first views pertaining to Firefox 1.5 Beta. The title of his article, hints his impressions on the recently announced software; "1.5 Beta Looks Better than Ever".
However there are some initial problems. One of the main problems with Beta 1, is the incompatibility with the vast majority of existing extensions programs. Extension developers are aware of this problem, so new, 1.5-compatible extensions should be in place well before the final version of 1.5 hits the street some time in November or December. Mozilla will be releasing a list of 1.5-compatible extensions within the week.
Improvements Made to Beta 1:
a) Taking a leaf from Opera browser, works much faster at rendering pages that you have already read.
b) The overall performance of the browser is better. Gecko, the layout and rendering machine behind the browser, has been tightened up and made faster.
c) Easy to get rid of private information with the new Tools/Clear Private Data Command.
d) It is very open-standard friendly. The program comes with support for SV (Scalable Vector Graphics), CSS (Cascade Style Sheets) 2 and 3, (DHTML (Dynamic HTML) and JavaScript 1.6.
As a beta, without any technical support, without support for 1.0x extensions, it should not be used as a replacement for Firefox 1.0x or any other browser. Come December and its final release, it will be a different story.

Basic HTML editor
Date: 09/12/05
(Software) Keywords: software, html
Hi folks,
Another one from me :-)
I am after some very simple HTML editing software. Something akin to Notepad, but which has support for and will add basic HTML e.g. bold, underline, italics. As well as this, also has the ability to display the result, ideally in an updated preview pane.
Is there such a thing?
TIA

Web Counters/Trackers
Date: 09/16/05
(Web Development) Keywords: software, virus, web, tracker, google
Hi everyone,
I'm a total newbie, and I have a question about web counters/trackers. Is there any web counter software (particularly something free) that you would recommend? My boss wants something that will track not just individual hits, but individual users (who may or may not have repeat visits), repeat visits, etc. I've done a search on Google and found quite a few free ones, but I want to be sure there isn't a hidden cost to them (pop-ups, viruses, whatever).
Something free is best, but if you know of a company that sells a really good counter/tracker, I'd be happy to hear about that too.
And as a last resort, is it difficult for somebody who knows web design (not me!) to come up with one on their own?
I'm afraid this may be an elementary question; so I apologize in advance if it is, or if it's been discussed before (please provide the link!), or appears in a community FAQ (I couldn't find one -- if it exists, please let me know).

Should election software be open source?
Date: 09/16/05
(Open Source) Keywords: software
Should the election software be open source or closed source? How open should it be? Should we be able to see it? Wouldn't that give hackers an easy way to control the election process? Or does our present use of closed source means they already have that?

Does anyone know how much one can expect to spend to hire someone to create a mysql/php script? The one in particular is for allowing a member to view online statements at a gym website and needless to say, quite secure. The software we use for gym management uses a mysql database. I've got to run this by my manager in two days so I'm looking for how much he can expect to spend and what is a good and reliable source to get this done. Thanks for any assistance. Trinity

eCommerce question
Date: 09/20/05
(PHP Community) Keywords: ecommerce, software, web
This is my first time posting here so hi!
Just a quick question... I've been asked to design a website and write a booking form for a local company that's just starting up. The thing is they want online payment which is something I'm a little nervous about setting up - I don't want to be sued by them if something goes wrong. I've had a brief look at eCommerce software already out there but the problem is they work on a catalogue basis which just won't work in this situation. So does anyone know of any eCommerce software that only deals with a payment system (i.e. via PayPal, etc) or one that has some form of catalogue that would be easy to bolt something else on to?
Has anyone had experience of writing software dealing with payments and have any idea how to "cover your arse" when doing so? This is the first time I've done such work for money so I don't want it to go wrong!

Today is one of those days. I am designing a new software and in a reflective mood. my roommate has a 54 Mbps NETGEAR WGR614 v4 wireless router but has lost the installation cd, the router is installed and working on her computer from when she first got the thing but we have no idea how to install the plug-in usb part on my computer without any installation software.
i downloaded the firmware offered on the net gear website but that didn't help. it downloads as a zip file and when uncompressed it's an adobe file and an IMG file which can't be opened (even by img file opener).
it says new hardware found when we insert the usb wireless thing and tries to search for "cohiba 3887 rev0"
both computers are running on Windows XP and we are trying to set up a home (wireless) network. also we have DSL.
help, i've no idea what to do and am so frustrated :(

recompiling apache and PHP
Date: 09/23/05
(PHP Community) Keywords: php, software, apache
I recompiled apache and PHP months ago to install mcrypt and cURL so billing software would work. I've recently changed billing software, and while troubleshooting the install, found that it wasn't working correctly because mcrypt wasn't installed. So I'm wondering...where'd it go? It *was* installed. Even if apache has upgraded itself recently, it wouldn't make sense that mods would need to be reinstalled each time. I'm just wondering if this has happened to anyone else? I know I'm not providing a lot of details....but I'm not quite sure where to start looking.
X-posted to apache and my own journal.
