1. Outgoing packets

Date: 10/07/05 (C Sharp)    Keywords: software, linux

Is there any way (besides using winpcap) to capture outgoing packets in Windows XP using C#.NET? I have written a neat socket class that binds to an interface and does a great job at throwing events for every packet received, but I don't see a single packet that's sent.

I have also downloaded several "example" applications from various .NET repositories on the internet that purport to capture outgoing packets, but don't.

I have heard of some issue (that may or may not be imagined) that outgoing packets capture using the stock network socket tools in Windows 2000 but not Windows XP. I don't know why this would be true, or even if it is true, but I do not have any software firewalls running on any of my PCs (I have a Linux machine acting as a combination firewall/router/PPPoE (*shudder*)/DHCP/etc. device, but that's my gateway and has nothing to do with the computers from which I am attempting to capture outgoing packets.

Any help, information, or source code is appreciated.

Hey guys. I'm new here and I would be lying if I said I didnt join just to make this post.

(this is not spam, just a good opportunity for students with mad skillz)

I work for a software company that sells discounted software to students and schools. Our hot sellers these days are the graphic programs like Maya and 3DsMax. Our student division, Studica - is hosting a graphics design contest, with $500 for first place in each software category. It is open only to students, unfortumately (sorry), and they will mandate student proof for an entry to qualify.

    http://www.studica.com/skills/

    Check it out.

(I get no perks if you enter, I'm just trying to promote this contest for my company. I also will not have any say in the judging, I doubt I will even see the entries as I work in the school division, Torcomp.

Apologies if this sort of post is not wanted here, I was told this community might have interested members)

  4. A step in the right direction?

Date: 10/09/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: software, security, virus, antivirus, spyware, spam, microsoft

Firstly, I just want this to be known that this isn't an anti-windows rant or anything. There is a question being posed here, I promise :P

With that said, companies like McAfee and Symantec have basically been making a living solely from Microsoft's security oversights. They've been charging people to use their software which protects those people from the vulnerabilities that Microsoft left open. The quality of these programs varies from function to function. Even then, they ignore adware since it's not considered 'malicous'. And even still, they have issues with using the same name for similar viruses. Users are faced with these same problems with any anti-virus/anti-adware/anti-whatever software they use. There is a lot of similar companies, but they don't have a common agreeance on what is and isn't a virus, or if they should detect adware. There's also the issues that come with the firewall program they install. Traffic from the internet isn't always malicious, but those firewalls can't usually tell the difference. Very few of these programs are free. None of these problems actually FIX the problem. They're only removing programs that exploit the initial vulnerabilities, leaving room for reuse value.

As many of you surely know already, Microsoft has recently released a beta version of their anti-crap (to summarize anti-spam, anti-virus, anti-adware, anti-spyware, etc) scanner and removal tool. Before that, they've included a firewall program in XP SP2. Microsoft is not charging anything for either of these programs. At least not as of yet if they ever decide to.

So, my question is this; Do you folks think Microsoft is taking a step in the right direction by adding the firewall and scanner tools? Will they do a better job than the other Antivirus vendors? Do you think maybe they are taking a step in the WRONG direction, like, why aren't they fixing the actual problems instead of covering them up? What do you all think?

An acquaintance recently asked me for help finding web development software. Knowing very little/nothing, I wondered what programs you might recommend. I'm not certain what he hopes to accomplish, but I imagine Dreamweaver probably wouldn't be necessary to start out with. What basic, bare bones programs might one use instead? Would a freeware XHTML editor be enough? If so, what?

Any comments appreciated. I hope this isn't too stupid a question for the community.

Date: 10/09/05 (Microsoft Windows)    Keywords: software

    Hey all,

I've been considering getting QTPro and wonder if anyone can provide some input.

I'm looking to play back mp4 video at full screen and the free QT player won't *grrrr* (if anyone knows of any player that does play .mp4 at full screen please reply)

Also, I'm looking at the authoring options, since I'd like to edit commercials out of shows I DVR on my PC and re-matte out the station logos *heh* and it looks like it would be good for editing mpeg video and pictures from my digicam together with music to make a DVD

It also seems Darwin Streaming Server could help with my idea of streaming media over my LAN to my laptop or hopefully my PSP

If anyone has any experience to share or recommendations of other software that'd be great - thanks in advance!

    btw - WinXP Pro / P4 3GHz / ATi Radeon 9800 if it matters

  7. Hewlett Packard Deskjet 5150 question

Date: 10/10/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software

Hi, my name is Heather, and IT services at this university are now sufficiently convinced I'm an idiot for not being aware of A4 sized printing paper, and so I am holding off turning to them for the moment, so here goes:

I have a Hewlett Packard 5150. It is quite beaten up, since it is from 2003 and on top of that has been roughly shipped across the Atlantic with no "Fragile" mark on it or sufficient packing, no doubt.

Enough personal stuff, though, my question is this. I have adjusted the settings and things for the aforementioned A4 paper, and the readings for ink say they're fine, and I am convinced the program is fine since it was not the software that was shipped across the Atlantic, but I continually receive this message when attempting to print:

    "L5C
    Paper Jam
Remove small media rear feeder and two sided printing module from the rear of the device and clear the jam..."

And then it goes on to say not to attempt to pull the jammed paper out through the front. Which is a dumb disclaimer considering it cannot even pull the paper into the gears to jam it.

    What should I do?

    Thank you.
