1. Software for out-work

    Date: 01/12/07 (Software)    Keywords: software

    Hi,

I'm looking for some software to access my work PC from home. My home PC is rather old and performs not really fast. I was told it's going to be some sort of a problem... :-/ On the other hand I have a stable Internet connection :-) What program would you recommend?

  2. Scanner and Camera Wizard Problem ..

Date: 01/14/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software

I have windows XP home. I have a Lexmark X74-X75 all-in-one scanner, printer, copier and fax machine installed. It works fine; however, the "Scanner and Camera Wizard" won't work with the lexmark software installed, I have to manually use the 'Add-Device' wizard to make the Scanner and Camera Wizard actually work .. the problem is, I have TWO of the same printers listed, and if I delete either one, the Scanner and camera wizard fails to work for some reason. I only need 1 listed, not two .. so how come I can't delete one and have the wizard still work?

EDIT: actually, the "Scanner and Camera Wizard" doesn't really work even when I manually add the device. It brings up the dialog box to select which printer I want to use (both are the same device) .. but then I get an Error that says:

    (The Error)

How come the wizard won't work either way?

    it's kinda annoying.

    (Screenshot of what I mean)

    Thanks for any help!

  3. Project management

Date: 01/14/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: software, database

Looking for anyone's experience in coming up with some sort of deployment system to bring together 4 different programmers on a project that needs to be built rapidly.

I am pretty well versed in subversion, but the way the lead of my new company is explaining, the individual developers will need to be able to modify the site's core library at will. And the concern with this is, what if one developer breaks a needed component...suddenly the other 3 programmers are at a work stoppage until it's fixed. So he suggested creating 4 branches of the main repository for the other dev's and me. This way each Dev has their own code base to modify at will. This seems a little crazy, but maybe I am missing something here.

From my understanding, you can remerge different branches together...but to do so requires manually walking through diff's of conflicting revisioned files. So unless we merge all 4 branches on a weekly basis, this will be one massive cluster -ck eventually at the end.

Some quick thoughts on my own:
Dedicating one of the 3 programmers to developing the core library, basically giving him/her a "I need this functionality" memo or something.

Coming up with some sort of per-file branching scheme when a dev has to edit a library/base system.

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Update

To clarify my problem, we have a version/source backup/management software system(subversion) decided upon, it's just a question of how to use it correctly to meet our needs.

Programmer a,b,c might all be working on separate branches of the application, but suddenly programmer A breaks a database abstraction class in the core of the whole thing, the end of the day comes and A commits the work in progress. The next morning B,C update their working copies, grabbing the broken DB class and bam workstoppage

  4. Seeking open source (or at least, freely available) project management software

Date: 01/15/07 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: mysql, software, database, sql, web, linux, microsoft

I'm trying to find something that will do approximately what Microsoft Project does, without actually being Microsoft Project ... Things I'd be looking for (ordered approximately from most important, to least important...):

  5. Can track project schedules and resource allocation

  6. Open Source (or at least, freely available)

  7. Self-contained standalone application (e.g., not web based, does not require any additional software such as MySQL or some other database back-end to be installed in order to function)

  8. Runs on both Windows and Linux

  9. Ability to work with (at least read) MS Project ".mpp" files nice, not strictly necessary

  10. I found "Windows Planner" (a Windows port of GNOME Planner) on Sourceforge. Unfortunately, while it does install on my WinXP SP2 system, it does not run - attempting to start it results in a DLL error. There are some other things on Sourceforge that look very nice, but they all seem to either be web-based, or require a database back-end, and that won't work for what I'm doing at the moment.

    Any recommendations?

  11. No internet

Date: 01/15/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software, microsoft

The other day I was on my computer and a blue screen flashed up, the PC rebooted itself too quickly for me to see what the blue screen said. Then once it had rebooted, as soon as I tried to log on to my Windows XP account, the blue screen came back up and said that there was a serious driver error (paraphrasing here) and that it could be something to do with a software or hardware fault. Windows refused to start because of this. It said to check any new software or hardware installed ( I haven’t installed anything new for ages, besides drivers for my video card).
So it kept doing the rebooting thing, until I started Windows in Safe Mode with Networking (for the internet) and luckily all my files etc were still there and usable. I could connect to the internet etc. About a week beforehand, I had downloaded drivers from Nvidia for the video card, as my Sims 2 game kept crashing and the report back from Microsoft said it was a problem with the video card drivers. So I uninstalled those completely and what do you know – no more blue screen when I logged into XP normally. I thought the problem was solved, but unfortunately now my internet isn’t working (I am posting this from work). I have broadband, and there is usually a little icon down in the corner of my taskbar with two little computers, showing my LAN connection to my ISP (I guess) and it is just not there anymore. If I try to get my ISP to connect, it just says that the local area network connection wasn't found. I thought it might be a problem with my modem, but I don’t think it is because before, when I was still on dial up, the icon was still there, only it just showed a red cross over it to say that it wasn’t connected. The lights and everything on the modem are working.

I reinstalled those Nvidia drivers, thinking that might solve the problem, but unfortunately not. The blue screen hasn’t come back though.

I really know nothing about video cards, (my last computer had crappy onboard graphics) so I’m taking a guess here that the card controls the networking for the computer? If so, would it be a hardware issue where a new video card would fix it? I have been wanting a new one anyway, but I don’t want to get one yet if that’s not the problem.

I tried doing a repair installation of XP but no dice. I’m hesitant to do a complete reformat because I have about 160 gigs of stuff I’d have to backup onto discs first, and that is a royal pain in the butt – especially if I did the reformat and then discover that a new video card would have fixed it all along!

I hope some of this has made sense to someone.

These are my specs from where I had the PC built:

AMD Athlon 64 4600+ Dual Core
    • Nvidia Geforce 6600GT 128MB PCI Express Video Card
    • 1024 MB DDR2 RAM
    • Seagate 200GB Serial ATA Hard Drive

If someone could offer some advice, I'd be extremely grateful!

    Cross posted.

  15. Videocasting Software

Date: 01/17/07 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: software, web

I need to find if there exists software for live videocasting. That is, software that simulates/replaces the mixing board that a small television station might have. The ability to switch between the feed from a webcam (or even a bunch of good cameras that find their way into the computer, so, perhaps, three USB webcams), multiple AVI or MPEG videos queued and ready to play, audio sources, etc.

Does such a beast exist? Anyone?

users are completely clueless/can't be bothered to import an htm/template to do it themselves, I need a software so that I can manage at my end.

I've looked at Symprex Mail Signature Manager, but its US625 for a 50 user license, sounds pricey for a utility.. (its like the price of exchange itself..)

  20. Printer is offline

Date: 01/20/07 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: software

I've been able to print off my printer before, but now the button on it is flashing, and in the "Printer and Faxes" window, it says my printer is offline. I have an HP Deskjet 3915. I went through all the HP Troubleshooting and it was unable to figure out what the issue was. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the software. I've turned the computer off, unplugged everything, waited, and replugged...didn't work. I've right clicked the printer icon and it says "use printer offline"...which confuses me b/c I thought if my printer was offline it would say "use printer online"....but Under the icon it says "Offline" instead of "Ready". Actually it says "Ready" when I turned my computer on, but once I go to print, it switches to "Offline". I'm at lost on what to do now. Any suggestions? Thanks so much in advance for your help

I've done all I can to grasp them but I think my old methods have reached their limits, frustration took over and I threw my flash cards out the window. Now I'm looking to start afresh with some new approach. Maybe there is some kind of software that lets you enter words and phrases, then enter definitions, and then flash them on the screen of your computer. Or something like that. Basically, I'm looking for suggestions on any helpful application you may know about.
