  3. Identity/proxy troubles

Date: 01/24/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software, browser, java

Um… I need some help here.
There is this persistent hacker who has been hacking me for some time now. A friend of mine told me download a software which would veil my IP address so said hacker couldn’t find me anymore. Ok. I did that. (Steganos Internet Anonym 2006).
Now the thing with this software is … just about everything. If I turn on the IP-blocking, none of the pages in my browser open. O.o
None of the other blocking options (like cookies, Java Script, etc.) are switched on, so I think it might have to do with the IP-blocking itself.
I am a total loser when it comes to IP and identity, and I don’t have a clue as to how to use proxy servers.
Does anyone know this software? And if yes, what am I doing wrong? Any tips?
And would this even prevent hackers from finding me and hacking my real IP? I really don’t have a clue.

Well. I know the hacker’s IP, and have put it into the block-list of my firewall. (I have Norton 2005 on Windows XP right now, and last month I used Zone Alarm.)
Yeah. Sorry about the onslaught of questions, but I’m kind of … well. Desperate… and annoyed.

Tips and help would be greatly appreciated.

  7. Logitech QuickCam for Notebooks - doesn't work with ANYTHING

Date: 02/01/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software, web

Hey all, I'm about at my wit's end trying to get my webcam to work with ANY chat program. I purchased the Logitech QuickCam about four months ago and it works seemingly at random with MSN Messenger and AIM...but lately it hasn't worked with either. I installed the software as directed and am currently still able to record video and take photos with it on my computer, but whenever I try to connect to a friend's camera through MSN Messenger or AIM, it looks like it's trying to do something (the LED turns green), and the chat client SAYS it's connecting, but after 30 seconds, nothing happens and the chat just ends. Like I said, it was working about two months ago and I was even able to get the microphone to work (another issue I was having), but I have looked all over AIM's support page (wholly unhelpful) AND I've called Logitech, and have come up completely emptyhanded.

I don't know if it's a firewall issue because my friend turned off his firewall once and we tried connecting...nada. The webcam is also listed in my firewall's Allowed Exceptions, and selected as the default video and voice device for both my computer AND for AIM. I have no idea what's going on; please help!

I'm connected through a wireless network and the internet seems to be working fine on both my friend's end and mine...no idea what's going on.

Please help! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  8. Intel Graphics Drivers Question

Date: 02/01/07 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: software

I picked up a new laptop last night (Toshiba Satellite P105-S6177), and everything is fine EXCEPT for issues with the graphics chipset (Intel 945GM).

This is basically my new gaming laptop, and I installed Vanguard on it but it doesn't run.

After hours of troubleshooting and researching the error I received, the issue comes down to the chipset apparently not have a vertex shading value of 2.0.

Intel.com says that the vertex shading for this chipset can go from 1.0 to 3.0, but it is basically set at 3.0.

Is there a way to change this value?

This laptop came with Windows Vista, and I am still learning my way around it. I have yet to find anything that will allow me to change this, and there is no software on the machine that is a "control panel" for graphics beyond changing brightness, color correction, resolution, etc.

    Any ideas?

I am very tempted to take this back and eat the 15% restock fee.

  13. Making .CUR files?

Date: 02/08/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: software, web

    I'm a bit flumoxed...

I don't really have much experience dealing with Web image-file formats outside of the .jpeg, .gif and .png arena, and have been searching with no resolution for a solution that would allow me to export, or draw a .cur file (custom cursor/pointer).

I found this piece of Windows software, which might be ok (I was highly turned off by the trial software), but highly prefer a PhotoShop or ImageReady plugin or even GIMP.

    Any recommendations? Thanks much!

  15. webcam drama

Date: 02/12/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software, web

I need serious help, guys. I'm completely clueless about what to do.

Less than a year ago I purchased a Packard Bell Platinum XI, with the Windows '98 program installed on it.

The woman who sold it to me threw in everything that she used with it, including a webcam. The webcam is nondescript. It's about an inch to 1 1/2 inch long, with a little black screen on the front and the Packard Bell symbol on the top. On the bottom is a sticker with some identification numbers or something of the like.

The thing plugs in just fine into the back of the tower...I just have no idea how to turn it on! There's no on/off switch on the actual webcam. Any search I make on my computer to figure out how to activate it comes up empty. There's no program for it, no indication that it has been used on this computer before.

Please help! Is there a software program that I need or something?

  16. Help?

Date: 02/12/07 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: software, web

Fellow geeks, the time has come to upgrade my dusty, worn out and quasi combustible dell inspiron 8600 lappy. I've been reading reviews and forums for about 3 months now trying to decide which notebook is best for me.

    Short description of it's uses:

I am a full time Graphic Designer (Daytime work for a software dev. co. in GUI dept. , Freelance Designer/Web Designer by night) I have a powerful machine at work and a soon to be updated machine at home. I need something in between and something I can carry with me everyday. Powerful enough to do the usual Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign/Dreamweaver/Visual Studio and maybe some light Unreal Tournament/Quake III i'm not looking for a gaming rig but if I can run some older FPS on it to kill some time at lunch... that would be lovely.
Size (and weight) Matters! I've been luggin' this 9+ lb lappy for far too long!

These are my choices so far (Mac's are not an option, not looking for a flame war with fan boys just... not my thing):

    Asus W7j   VS   Asus A8j

I'd love to hear any input.

    Thanks,

P.S. I will not be running vista, will stick to XP Pro/ Suse dual boot.

  20. Lots of stuff to store!

Date: 02/16/07 (IT Professionals)    Keywords: software

I'm currently working on a project that involves a photography studio!

    • They're on their 3rd TB of data
    • I want to get them away from those stupid RAID 1 enclosures that offer them 1tb of data storage
    • They have some backup scheme in place, but it involves cds.
    • They just hired a re-toucher guy, and hes going to use gobs and gobs of storage. (they only have 2 other employees, the owner and an assistant)
    • They don't want to spend a fortune.
I like those Infrant ReadyNAS NV+ boxes, but they only have 4 bays. So after you raid 5 it, its 2.25tb. So we'd need to purcahse two, and that would hold them over until they need to purchase another. Meh. Backing these things up would be a pain in the ass too... i could build a computer with a ton of storage and have it rsync to that computer, but even over gig-e it would take a while.

My other thought is an XServe RAID with a tape autoloader. But this is significantly more expensive than the Infrant boxes. I know, i know, you get what you pay for. But i don't think the business wants to spend that kind of money. The xserve I priced out is around $11,200 - 7 x750gb drives, 2x battery backup modules, applecare, 5% MA tax... a tape autoloader would be probably an extra $6500 after software and tapes were done. But I feel better about this solution because they can have some offline storage as well as online storage. They could put old years on tape and keep that somewhere safe, and restore parts when/if they needed to.

The client said that "my friend who does this too just uses two hard drives and saves copies to both" but I get the impression that he doesnt do as much as she does. I have problems suggesting really expensive solutions when there's something else we could put together.

Suggestions? Ideas? This is my first time with a storage related project. I'm confident in my abilities to set it up once the parts come in, but boy howdy do I love second opinions.
