Spyware issue.
Date: 05/30/06
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: virus, spyware
I currently have extremely large amounts of spyware on my laptop at the minute.
Nearly every thirty seconds, this pops up.
When I click it, it directs me to SpyFalcon.
Which is just a pain in the ass, and has slowed my computer down.
My laptop has ultimately no protection from viruses, spyware, adware, etc.
And it's been fine for well over a year--until now.
So I downloaded Ad-Aware SE--because I was told it was free, and worked pretty well.
However, it did nothing.
ARE there any free reliable programs that can be downloaded to remove this, as well as other possible threats I'll have in the future. Also, if I end up purchasing a program, what is the best choice?
I appreciate any help given.

Virus?
Date: 06/18/06
(Computer Help) Keywords: virus
I'll give you the rundown because I like to over specify and never leave anything minorly imporatant out:
For the past 4(?) years I've had Walmart Connect (basically like old AOL, just cheaper) as my internet provider (and Norton Anti-virus for the last year) a little while back (maybe three months) it would start asking me if I wanted to switch to Ntscape whenever I would log in, I'd say no and jsut go about my business. Then one day I go to click my icon, and it no longer says Walmart Connect, but Netscape, it changed itself somehow (my email still is the same..). A week ago my Norton Anti-virus expired, but I was dallying on renewing...
The Problem:
For the past two day most graphics/pictures/everything but words on ANY and EVERY site I go to (except for livejournal icons) are blank boxes with red x's. I hurried up and renewed my Norton thinking it would be fixed somehow..but I still have red x's. What's going on?

mlargh. taskbar being mean.

okay, so, this has been happening to me since i downloaded BearShare. Whenever i open a program that is non-microsoft, it will not appear in the takbar, except for my Wi-Fi router monitoring software. here are some pictures to describe what i mean.
It is very annoying, seeing as i use photoshop and premiere very often as a (very) ametuer film maker. Is there any way i can stop this, and also, any free anti-virus software that can run on 98 SE? Thanks much.

I have like 3 big problems.
Some virus or something had turned off my Firewall and I can't get it back on. All the links are like dead. And I can't fix it. So I have all these popups and they won't go away. And it's annoying and my computer is super sensitive to getting viruses. So that's one questions. Help?
The other one is that AIM virus thing. I'm really kind of dumb about that stuff. If I deleted AIM and redownloaded, would that work? And I can't download AIM from the AIM site. So someone once sent a link to download it there. I think it had something to do with CNet or something.
So I need helped with my Firewall, help with my AIM or the link to redownload AIM.
Thanks.
-Kate.

Grr.
Date: 06/26/06
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: virus, spyware
This is the most annoying problem.. EVAR I am so desperate to fix this problem, I'm going to describe every last detail of this problem.. and evvery detail I can provide about my computer. We are working with:
Windows XP on a..
2.53Ghz Pentium 4 Processor
1GB DDR RAM
260GB hard drive space
128MB ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Video Card
Sound Blaster Audigy 2
If you need anymore specs, let me know...
Heres the problem. I used to be able to make music videos, and any kind of videos in Windows Movie Maker, perfectly fine. I mean, WMM would freeze every once in a while, but I heard that that was common.
NOW... for the past few months... I can not do ANYTHING in ANY video editor. I've tried Premiere, Ulead Video Studio, Movie Maker, and countless others. They all do the SAME thing... I just get a Windows error message, and it closes.
In Movie Maker, it is whenever I try to play the movie I have already created... in the others, it is pretty much any random time.
I have tried downloading all the codecs I've been recommended.. I've downloaded updates.. I've reinstalled the programs.. I went to Control Panel, Sound and Audio Devices, Hardware, Codecs and erased them and reinstalled them.
NOTHING works. I have no viruses, no spyware or anything like that that is doing this.
Please.... does anyone have ANY idea what could be doing this??? Just ask if you need anymore info... I really want to find out what is wrong... I have tried searching EVERYWHERE... and I've tried a hundred things to no avail.

Boot problem
Date: 06/29/06
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: virus, spyware
Relevant parts:
Mustang 350W ATX power supply
Albatron PX915G PRO
Pentium 4 2.66GHz 550FSB Prescott core
I'd list the drives but the computer can't even get that far, so I can't see that it matters.
What happened:
We had a bunch of storms last week, and while I did my best to be careful and unplug things, there were a couple of surprise storms while I was stuck at work. Last Tuesday, the 20th, I was in the middle of working on a spreadsheet when the whole thing shut down and rebooted itself. It was fine for the rest of the day, so I sort of went, "Wow, that was bizarre," and then forgot about it... until Wednesday, when it did it again. It proceeded to get progressively worse, rebooting more often, and the last few times it did reboot, it took three or four tries just to boot the BIOS. Saturday night I tried to turn it on when I got home from work, and it wouldn't boot at all.
What I did:
When it was still just randomly rebooting, I ran Ad Aware and Spyware Blaster repeatedly, thinking that I had some kind of spyware or virus. When it started having difficulty booting anything at all, I decided it had to be a hardware issue, and probably not HD related since it sometimes couldn't do anything before it would have to start over and try again. I wondered aloud to a somewhat-hardware-savvy friend at work about whether the mobo could have gotten fried, and he said that when his own was hit once, it was completely dead, whereas on mine the fans and lights and junk like that all come on. We concluded that it might be the CPU that got fried. Replaced that today... and... nothing. Did some more Googling and forum-reading, and I finally realized that it's probably the power supply, which I had previously stupidly ruled out just because some stuff was running and was, therefore, getting power. I've never had one fail on me and I didn't know that they were capable of partially working. But then I read this:
"When the actual power supply fails, it can exhibit a number of symptoms. You could experience crashes, data corruption, or hardware failure. Another thing that could happen is that when you turn on your PC, the lights and fans come on, but it doesn't boot, because the BIOS cannot verify a sufficient and consistent power flow is established before it continues the Power On Self Test (POST) and the boot process."
which is from http://www.PCNineOneOne.com
I've also read in several places that the power supply is the most common thing to go out after an electrical surge. So at this point I'm convinced that the power supply is bad. Basically I'd just like some other, more informed opinions, because several hours ago I was convinced that the CPU was bad. I'd take the supply somewhere to get tested except that anywhere I can go will probably charge me more than the damn thing is worth, so... Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Computer "snagging"
Date: 07/11/06
(Computer Help) Keywords: virus, spyware
About every thirty seconds or so, my computer will "snag" (not exactly freeze, but anything typed will not show up for several seconds, the screen will not scroll, I am unable to click links, etc. etc.) for about three to five seconds at a time. I've done a SpyBot scan and updated that, and immunized my computer, and also did an Ewido scan as well, thinking it was some sort of weird virus/spyware thing, but it's still "snagging" and it's really starting to drive me crazy. Any advice?

2 issues
Date: 07/16/06
(Computer Help) Keywords: browser, virus, google
i have 2 unrelated questions.
the first one: my internet browsers on my desktop computer will not access the internet. i guess that isn't completely true, sometimes they do and then out of of the blue they won't, and i will get an "unable to connect to server" message, or something like that telling me i have no internet connection. i have to reboot to "fix" it. i figure the problem has nothing to so with ISP/Internet connection because while my browsers won't bring up pages, i can still stay on my messengers and dl stuff off soulseek and bittorrent, and other various programs can access the net to update (plus the fact that rebooting always fixes it). I have used both IE and Firefox and i have also scanned for viruses with norton anti virus corporate ed, checked for spy ware with spybot s&d, ad aware, and crap cleaner (and i updated all programs before using). I have checked my firewall settings (zone alarm) and i also checked all the processes running on my computer and only one i couldn't find using google (E_FATI99AA.exe). So i was wondering what i should try next.
the second questions: my laptop has a crack in it. when closed the crack is on top, it is slowly growing but it is still pretty small, so i wondering what i might use to seal it up and prevent it from getting any larger.

Different User Accounts
Date: 07/16/06
(Computer Help) Keywords: virus
My daughter and I have separate user accounts on my computer. Hers is a limited account and mine is the administrator account. We seem to have a lot of problems with her account getting viruses and things like that. I have PC-Cillin and it seems to work just fine on my account. Should we be running it manually on her account? Or should we not even have two separate accounts at all?
Any help/opinions would be greatly appreciated.
