School file / print / management server ideas
Date: 09/16/06
(IT Professionals) Keywords: software, html, security, virus, antivirus, linux, hosting
So... I am trying to help a (very) small school actually get some IT going. Could I get some opinions on how to build a low-cost file and print server for a place with about 50 computers?
Right now, they're running a mix of MacOS X and Windows XP Home / Win98. They have NO server to speak of (not even an IT guy), and teachers print by connecting to some other workstation's shared printer or they figure it out on their own. They have no backups whatsoever, and many computers don't print because they don't have the right drivers installed, etc. I think they should have some solution that costs very little in recurring maintenance, and I'm torn between the options at this point.
I was thinking of 3 ways to go about this, but I'd love to see what others may recommend...
1) Buy Windows 2000 Server (because it's cheaper) and get 50 CALs.
Perceived pros:
- Any IT guy should know how to help them administer a windows server.
- File sharing and print services are built into the OS, no additional tweaking required.
- Domain controller could help them manage group policy, push software updates out, etc.
- Other software (antivirus management, etc.) can run straight on the DC.
Perceived cons:
- I still think that'll run over $500 for the software licenses, right? Then upgrades, of course.
- System maintenance will be essential if the server's to be kept virus-free. Will maintenance cost more?
2) Build a Linux server that has Samba / CUPS services
Perceived pros:
- Very cheap (free) to set up
- Many features can be added to the server
- Not very susceptible to viruses or other security holes (provided auto updates are in place)
Perceived cons:
- Unfamiliar interface for the non-technical administrator
- Services will have to be set up manually, perhaps tweaks will have to be made to be compatible with newer OSes.
- Can 3rd party software run on this? (i.e. antivirus managment)
- Not any IT guy will know how to fix the server?
3) Buy an appliance built for the job, like the PowerElf II (http://greencomputer.com/solutions/school.shtml)
Perceived pros:
- Quickest setup (possibly)
- Many services provided out of the box (including ones they probably will never need, like email hosting)
- Automated maintenance and backup is part of the system.
Perceived cons:
- Initial cost is $2000 at least, possibly more for hardware maintenance
- Vendor lock-in is possible
- Incompatibilities with 3rd party software??
Anyway, I wondered what you all thought.

Wallpaper
Date: 09/20/06
(Computer Help) Keywords: virus
I had a wallpaper on my computer and I got some type of virus that made it turn black. I did a million virus scans and a bunch of recovery system scans and I was finally able to change the color of my background so now it's purple. I tried going to control panel, then display and wallpaper, and all the options are colored gray so I can't click on them. My task manger, I also noticed, has been 'disabled by the administrator'. Does anybody know how to get my wallpaper option back along with the task manager? I also tried right clicking on a picture online and then setting it as my wallpaper for my desktop, and nothing happens.

Installing iTunes Issue
Date: 09/24/06
(Computer Help) Keywords: software, asp, virus, web, spyware, google
*cross-posted*
So I'm trying to reinstall iTunes and I'm having a lot of problems with it.
All the support sites for the software point back to eachother. Here's what the error message is that I'm getting.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v74/enflamedphoenix/1.png
So I googled that and saw that it's an issue with installshield. So I go to the installshield site at http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q110641 and see how to fix the problem. So I go to the place where you fix the problem and follow the instructions at http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108322.
Ironically enough, that causes the original error again. After the first error in iTunes shows up, I get this error: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v74/enflamedphoenix/2.png
I've uninstalled iTunes and Quicktime. I've used spybot and adaware and antivir to check for spyware or viruses. I've registered files per the installshield website. I've used Windows Installer to delete any quicktime or itunes installer files. I just can't seem to get it to work. I don't know what else to do. I would like to be able to use my ipod haha
If anyone has any advice for me to try?

problem removing dialer - ias860.dll
Date: 09/26/06
(Computer Help) Keywords: security, virus, yahoo
I am running Windows XP home.
Ok, I don't know I got this, but I can't remove it. I've virus scanned 3 times (I am up to date), used spybot search & destroy (but it found nothing, even while updated), and used hijackthis to delete it, but everytime I do, it just keeps coming back. The virus scanner (I use AVG) found some of the virus but it didn't remove it all, despite me scanning more then once.
I went to the registry and deleted all references to ias860.dll, and all it's keys, but it seems to magically reappear on startup.
I also tried deleting the file, ias860.dll, but it won't let me. It's not in my process list and it only shows up in my startup list when I use spybot's 'system startup' tool (msconfig doesn't show it.) It's not read-only .. I also rebooted in safe mode and tried to delete the file, it still wouldn't let me. Also in spybot, there is a tool to remove BHO's. The BHO is there, it references to a place in the registry. I tried to delete the key in spybot, it removes it but it doesn't matter since it .. just keeps coming back.
I can use spybot to delete the file, but it just keeps coming back. In spybot, this is the startup info:

Monitor turns itself off
Date: 10/01/06
(Computer Help) Keywords: virus, spyware
Hey. Lately I've been having this issue with my computer. In the middle of doing something my monitor will turn off by itself. It doesn't come back on by clicking on the mouse or pressing a button or anything. To make matters worse, pressing the power button does nothing, the computer will not turn off. I have to actually reach in the back of the computer, unplug the power chord and then plug it back in, and turn my computer back on. That's the only way I can restart my computer in this situation.
At first I thought maybe I just was low on diskspace (because I download a lot) or something so I deleted some junk I didn't need. That hasn't seemed to do anything. Ran some virus-scans and spyware checkers. Nothing. So what is this? A RAM issue? A power supply issue? Maybe I need to open up my tower and clean off some dust? Is there something I should check. Hopefully I can resolve this issue without spending money or reinstalling windows.
Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for any advice you can offer. If there's any info you need to help you understand my problem ask and I'll try to supply it.

Logitech webcam problem.
Date: 10/03/06
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: html, virus, antivirus, web
My roommate is having a connection problem with her Logitech webcam, and I have no idea how to fix it. She is not running a firewall program, all appropriate ports are open, and her internet is properly configured. She has gotten it to work before, but it has mysteriously lost the ability to connect when she came to the University. Does anyone in this community have any ideas about what might be wrong?
Here she explains the problem in her own words:
I bought a Logitech Quickcam Messenger from Target expecting it to properly work with my mac iBook. I immediately found out the camera wasn't compatible with my laptop. After quite a few hours of research I finally found a way to get it to work. I had to go into my router's html page, into advanced, and into forwarding to change the in and out ports to properly accept the cameras image. I also downloaded a program called Macam, which was recommended to me. Now I'm not sure what necessarily got the camera to work but it was fine all summer. Now I've come to college and have an ethernet connection. Of course I can't change the forwarding settings but I was told from the tech help that all the ports necessary are open, so that's not it. It's really wierd to because I can recieve someone else's video image, and I can see my own with the camer, so it's properly connected, but when I send it to someone else, it says it's waiting to be sent and then it cancels. It simply can't get through. When I got here I also had to download Symantec Antivirus, so I'm thinking that might have something to do with it. But that seems very wierd and unlikely, especially since I can recieve someone else's image. Please help me out if you have any ideas!!

Locked XP Home Machine
Date: 10/04/06
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: virus, spyware, google
My neighbor's son has apparently locked their family computer.
A dialog box has been brought up indicating that the computer is "locked" and requires a password to continue. However, nothing appears in the box when my neighbor tries to type in the password. Google has brought up multiple ways to lock a workstation down, but none of them seem to present the same behaviors as what's happened to my neighbor. Does anyone have experience with behaviors like this?
As an aside, this might be a virus or spyware, as it seems to exhibit a normal behavior in an abnormal way.

all men condemned by men to die
Date: 10/16/06
(Computer Help) Keywords: software, virus, microsoft
There are no stupid questions, only stupid people.
My mother runs an older PC. Windows ME, small memory, etc. It’s what you would have expected to get by default six or seven years ago, from big box retailer. I don’t really remember all the specifics of it, and the majority of the paperwork is misplaced.
Despite having to reformat the hard-drive four times over six years, the PC’s been working fine for the last two and a half. Now, the machine reboots on shutdown and has a box that pops up prior to downloading the desktop asking for a password (you can bypass the box by clicking escape).
I reinstalled all her drivers and checked her hard drive for errors, but there was nothing. It’s also virus and spy-ware clean (there’s a possibility I’ve missed some, always). We recently installed DSL. She only uses the Internet, Microsoft Outlook, Firefox, the calculator, and the system tools (like scan disk and disk defrag). She also has software for her camera (so she can format pictures and send then over email), but she doesn’t edit her photos besides reducing them in size.
I’m not against reformatting her hard drive once again, although I’d rather not unless there’s no other way.
Buying a new/used PC isn’t an option. Nor is upgrading to Windows XP (she doesn’t have the memory to support it and I have a feeling that within the next two years, it’ll be completely overtaken by Vista).
Any solution or advice is really welcome. My computer-fu isn’t what it used to be and I really do want to fix it for her.

My Boyfriend is Moron
Date: 10/23/06
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: virus
Well, I thought he knew better, but I guess not. I go on my boyfriend's computer & all sorts of weird stuff is going on. The homepage in IE won't come up right & I get warnings about things being a virus, & I find a bunch of new unknown programs on the computer... My boyfrined tells me he downloaded them... All I could do was stare at him blankly for about two seconds, before completely ripping into him. I mean he should know better, but I guess not.
So anyway, I want to completely wipe the hardrive & start over. I found his system disks, & I was wondering if there was anything else I should do before I try to do this. Keep in mind the system restore is not going to do anything, because it only goes back so far, & I've been wanting to do this for months now. This is like the tenth time something has happened in the time I've been able to use this computer. So there's damage I can't undo from before.
The computer is a Dell XPS Gen5, running Windows XP (not sure what edition).
Thanks in advance.
