Arghhh!

(Computer Help) Keywords: virus, spyware
Grr. Basically, I am having some serious computer issues, based around Windows closing and error report sending the "Data Exucution Protector" and "DrWatson Debugger ..something".
My laptop is only 11 months old and runs on Windows XP. I have done a Norton virus scan on it with no results, and scan for spyware regularly.
1) "My Documents" no longer has my documents in it. I thought they had all been deleted, but for some bizarre reason they have all been moved to folders labelled "____'s Documents". WHY? 2) Lately it has been repetatively popping up those send error report boxes for "Data Exucution Protector" and "DrWatson Debugger" type things. After they appear everything pretty much breaks down and my desktop disappears (the toolbar etc.), making it unusable. 3) I took the laptop into PC World and was showed a way I could scan it for something that would make sure it was running at proper speed.. I cannot remember for the life of me what it was doing really, only that there were five stages to it on a grey screen in safety mode of the computer, but apparently I could do this off the desktop I would really appreciate any explanation or advice :)

Agh, my computer hates me!
Date: 11/28/06
(Computer Help) Keywords: virus, antivirus
My computer has been quite jackassical lately. Last summer, it started shutting down right when Windows loaded, and even when I went into safe-mode it continued the behavior, showing that it was either a boot-sector virus or hardware problems. So, first I took it to my girlfriend's brother who she said could probably fix it, he 0-filled the drive, but I guess he couldn't install RAID so then I took it to a local computer shop, it was fixed and according to the person, the only problem was that it got out of RAID formation (which I'm not sure if that was actually what the problem was). Even before this, every once in a blue moon at startup it wouldn't recognize the RAID formation, but then just by restarting it, I got to Windows.
Now, it seems as if one of my HD's died (I now have it in RAID 1), which, wasn't TOO big of a problem, since I can just click "continue to boot" and I can still access the computer. But the last time I turned the computer on after the motherboard screen thing, at first it gave me a message "overclock failed" Then, once I restarted again I could get to Windows.
So, what the hell? Is my motherboard shot? Could BOTH of my harddrives be shitting out on me? Could it be anything else? I mean, I haven't cleaned out the case in awhile, but I kind of doubt that could lead to anything this bad. I have McAfee antivirus and firewall along with spybot and ad-aware, so I really doubt it is a virus. Help! I am seriously worried that one of these days it just won't start for me.

Can't write to CDs anymore. =/
Date: 12/02/06
(Computer Help) Keywords: virus, spyware, microsoft
Hi. My computer is a Compaq Presario SR1011NX, with Windows XP installed. After not having done so for a while (I know, bad thing for me to do), I decided to back-up my important files (text files like writing, artwork stuff, etc). Ever since I had this computer, the only way that I've backed up files was to use XP's built in deal to copy the files to CD-RWs. And that process has worked just fine and good.
But now, I'm having some serious problems with that.
I collected together said CD-RWs and go to clean the old files off of them... and they won't delete. So I look around a bit, and see that I'll just have to erase the whole CD-RW -- okay! Only, there's no option to do so. The option just isn't appearing. Puzzled, I do some more poking around, some more tests, and now I know what's wrong. Apparently, whatever writing ability my CD drive had is... gone. Doesn't work. Any attempt to delete or even add files onto the CD-RWs is met with this error message:
"Files on this CD-ROM drive are read-only. You cannot copy or move files over to this CD-ROM drive."
Any attempt to take off the read-only status on those files results in:
"An error occurred applying attributes to the file: E:\path\file Access is denied."
I tried a third-party CD-writing program (NTI CD-Maker 2000 Plus) installed on here, and tried to erase the CD-RW or tinker with files on there, the error message was:
"No supported CD-RW drive detected."
So I tried copying files over to both a fresh CD-RW and then a fresh CD-R. Both times, the wizard for copying files wouldn't open, and I instead got this lovely message:
"E:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function."
I then checked to see if things like games would run by popping in The Sims, and that ran fine, so... it just won't copy/write to CDs anymore, or let me mess with the files off of data CDs. It'll read the files and let me access them, but I can't delete or alter them. Any options involving writing to/copying to/deleting for CD-Rs and CD-RWs just don't appear at all anymore.
On the My Computer screen, the drive still reads as "CD-RW Drive (E:)". Oh, and for the type, it's a Sony CD-RW CRX25E5, and the Device Status reads that it's working properly... even though it's not.
Basically, I have no idea what's going on. I never messed with any drivers or such, and my computer is clear of any viruses, spyware, and the like. I've tried contacting both Compaq/HP and Microsoft, but those attempts aren't going well. Hopefully I've provided enough information, and if not, let me know and I'll post more. Thanks ahead of time for any help on this problem! I just want to back up my files, as many of them are too big to fit on floppy disks (and I don't have anything like one of those nifty flash drives).

Viruses & adsl.

http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=426607
This sounds almost exactly like my problem:
The symptoms are:
- No web pages get displayed for any of the websites - If we reboot the pc/xp then internet web page access works fine for the first few minutes. After that it will not work. Tried both IEand Mozilla. But every thing in the setting seems to be fine. Checked the Tools Options, etc/host etc.All the connection settings are proper with DHCP enabled, Automatic IP address, DNS address etc. though:
- ping works fine - nslookup also works fine. it shows the correct ip address to hostname mapping I tried MS Antispyware beta1 and AVG Free both found some viruses and of course rebooted the machine. But no use. I still ended up with the same problem.
Finally I started removing winsocks entries in the registry. After that I could even use ipconfig and nslookup.
I tried system restore from the control panel. Wow. It worked. I restored the system to the day where I had no problem to access internet. After restore, the pc boots on its own and then finally, the problem is gone. Since I restored the system to a backdate, all the visuses are also got restored. Again used Antispyware beta1 to scan the pc to remove all the affected Drives. Also, used AVG Free to remove remaining viruses.
The solution: Use system restore.
There,in case anyone can help me with this(pretty, pretty please!?)In my case System restore doesn't work,Windows re-installation(few times),didn't work either. Also, after I reboot,I still can't open pages in any browser,it just allows me to connect. Without rebooting my pc I can't connect at all. And sometimes even that doesn't help. My dial up works fine,as you can see.
I'm not a computer expert,I know only basics,so please bear with me. Tnx.
x-posted everywhere,because I'm desperate like that.

Ok. In the bottom right corner of the screen there's a flashing icon next to the date that is either an exclamation mark in a yellow triangle or switches to a bomb(ball with spikes). I can't right click to try to bring up a roll window to click exit because like a left click it sends me to this friggin website virusbusters.com. I don't have their software, never downloaded it. I cleaned my internet history, cookies, saved text, etc etc. I've also run Mcafee virus scan, spy hunter spyware scanner, and spybot scanner. None of them can pick this up and I don't know where to look for whatever's causing it on my computer beyond add/remove programs and searching my hard drive with *virusbuster*.
Any suggestions? : /

Opera = virus or spyware?
Date: 01/04/07
(Opera Browser) Keywords: html, virus, spyware, google
If I do a Google search by typing g whatever in the Opera address bar, I'm now getting a 403 Forbidden response, with an apology page: We're sorry...
... but your query looks similar to automated requests from a computer virus or spyware application. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now. Then there's a captcha - "To continue searching, please type the characters you see below:"
I'm reasonably sure that the problem isn't a virus or spyware, but Google being suspicious of the Opera searches, so... Yuk!
Is this happening to anyone else?
Update: This seems to be related to where Google sees your request originating, and not anything to do with Opera. Apologies. It seems that Google has been doing this for quite a while. More info: http://www.spy.org.uk/spyblog/2005/06/stupid_google_virusspyware_cap.html

proxy to non-us server or ip?

greetings!
i am a former arabic student that would really like to practice her arabic by watching a certain lebanese channel that, while it luckily has a webtv option on its website, is for SOME REASON not accessible to the us. its definitely not for political reasons, as this is the entertainment/bullshitty/rich-youth channel, very superficial and known for it. i believe its because the channel is available int he us with direct tv-- so maybe there's a non competition thing.
while direct tv is expensive, the webtv option at the channel's website is cheap and convenient! but as soon as they register my ip as coming from the us, the programs don't get through.
is there any way around this? i thought of some proxy thing but i haven't had success in finding something good. either it doesnt work or its too slow. is there anyway to just disguise hte isp? any reliable and non virusy programs? if its a proxy, i guess it needs to be a fast connection, cause it has to allow for streaming video.
any ideas are very welcome! thanks so much for your time and thought energy!
best,
lisa

symantec and xdbdown.cmd
Date: 01/18/07
(IT Professionals) Keywords: virus
EDIT: Temporary solution in comments
If anyone is using Symantec Corporate AV, and have the XDBdown.cmd script set to auto download defs - make sure you check your systems for updates. Mine stopped updating on 1/12.
After googling and checking symantec's site to no avail, I started taking apart the script to find out what was broken.
It looks like Symantec changed providers for their FTP site, and the version of FTP server on the new host does not function the same as the previous version, for which the script was written.
One particular troublesome line does
dir *.xdb chk.lst >>check.txt
On the previous version this would simply get a directory listing of everything named *.xdb, and send it off to a text file to be parsed (extract filename and size)
The new FTP server does not properly support "dir *.xdb" and returns the whole directory listing instead. - thus making the parse not work properly, and you end up downloading a text file instead of the virus defs.
Symantec has been impossible to contact about this, and I found 2 references to this problem in Symantec's newsgroup - which were DELETED (probably by symantec?)
So.. For the time being I'm just going to download the files manually. I'll give symantec a few days to work something out and if not I'll just modify the script to properly parse out the xdb file.
Just a heads up, normally this thing updates itself and I don't even bother looking at it - I'd hate to have someone be on ancient virus defs while all along thinking the machine was updating automagically.

Files Becoming Corrupt, Crashing Explorer
Date: 01/20/07
(Computer Help) Keywords: virus
Basic info: Windows XP Pro running on a computer I built from a barebones kit a couple years ago. Pentium 4 2.8 gHz, 512 MB RAM etc. I'm running a legal version of Norton Anti-Virus with up-to-date virus info and all of my virus scans have come back clean. I also tried Trend Micro House Call, same.
I have two hard drives. C is its own separate drive and just as Windows and my apps. The second hard drive is partitioned into D and E and has no OS. D contains all of my multimedia (large quantities of images), E is miscellaneous, unorganized back-ups.
Over the last month or so, I've started to have problems with still images stored on the D drive. A couple would just stop working and I suppose become corrupt. Windows Picture Viewer would say "No preview available" and the image would no longer open in Photoshop or whatever. At first I thought these were PNGs that had been saved with the wrong file extension but in the last week, the problem has gotten worse. JPEGs that worked fine that I have had backed up for several years are becoming corrupt and Windows Explorer started to crash when accessing a certain folder (the "humor" folder of images, ironically).
Upon restarting my computer, Windows would occasionally run some sort of file recovery for "orphaned files" and this would solve the problem but no longer. It seems like every time I move files from one folder to another (all on the D partition), more images are corrupted and more folders have started causing Explorer to crash.
Again, I have updated by virus definitions several times and run two different virus scans to no avail. I opened one e-mail 3-5 months ago that Norton notified me of containing a virus but it was caught and there weren't any problems after that (till recently).
I have tried defragmenting the drive but it always shows up as being a whopping 1-3% fragmented.
I am in the process of going through each subfolder with Bad Copy but it's a very slow process and in spite of Bad Copy's claims, it is not fixing my spontaneously corrupted images.
For whatever reason, the E partition of this same hard drive hasn't had any problems, but it only sees about 5% of the use that the D drive does.
I'm GUESSING my hard drive is failing but... is this the case? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to save the data that remains in tact? Why are image files slowly getting eaten? It's 15 GB for starters. I was going to copy everything over to my husband's back-up drive but every time Windows comes across a corrupt file, it halts the copying process. As of now, I'm using Nero Backup for the first time and... I have no idea what I'll do after that. Go through every subfolder with BadCopy, I guess.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Sorry for the long post and thanks for your time.
