1. On-the-fly PDFs.

    Date: 10/06/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, mysql, sql, web, google

    My employer wants to start generating PDFs from our PHP management system. I'm still pretty new to really 'doing things' with PHP and the PDF documentation I looked at on the online manual lacks clarification on almost every command for it.

    I'm wondering if someone has an idea of where I can read something of substance on the subject. My google results turned up a few web design tutorials - but they are based on depreciated code.

    Specifically I need to learn how to open a PDF file as a template only with added data from form/mysql information.

  2. Hosting/Upkeep charges

    Date: 10/06/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

    Hi everybody, I have a situation where someone wants me to host a site and update it as needed after it's complete, and also host and update an existing site, both on their own domains. This isn't a problem for me, server space isn't an issue, but I was wondering what to charge for this sort of thing, since this is a new situation; they don't want to bother with any of these website issues at all, and I usually deal with academia, where they host and update all their own stuff.

    I was thinking that these two sites won't need that much maintenance, once they're both up and running, and they are pretty simple static 'brochure' sites of about 10-15 or so pages. I can't really see myself spending more than an hour on average, per month on these, and no stylistic changes, just content as needed.

    Taking a stab at it.... $50/mo - what do you think?

  3. Disjointed Rollovers with an Image Map

    Date: 10/07/06 (Javascript Community)    Keywords: html, web

    Can someone point me in the direction of an explanation on how to do this:

    How can I combine disjointed rollovers with an image map?  I'm using XHTML 1.0 Transitional.  Basically I have an image of a city and then another image that's a sign and when you hover on each building, its description appears on the sign in the 2nd image.

    I also asked about this in the webdesign community.  Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

    Date: 10/09/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

    Exhausted web administrator would love to meet willing victim and get them to run The Rumour Machine (www.rumourmachine.com), a popular genre film review website catering for the Horror, Fantasy, Sci Fi and Alternative Cult Cinema genres.

    The site has been built up and run by Lee Bailes for over 5 years. His new work commitments mean that he is unable to remain involved with the website and is planning to shut it down unless someone else demonstrates a willingness to take over the workload and wants to run the website. Lee is willing to hand everything over to the person who best demonstrates a love for the genres and a genuine enthusiasm for the momentous task of taking over the site.

    The chosen victim will receive one well used website, the domain name, an established readership and film industry contacts and a very useful marketing tool. If you're interested get in touch with the '[info]'rumour_man!

  7. Frontpage Class

    Date: 10/09/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: programming, database, web

    Still trying to figure out if I want to go to Ai online. There are no local college courses around here for me to just go learn how to build a website. I would rather be taught than fish around for information for however many years. Anyhoo - one course around here is for frontpage. $160. A far cry from $15,000. However, I've never heard much about frontpage. A total waste or useful knowledge?

    EDIT New Question:
    AI online Classes:
    * Digital Imaging for Multimedia & Web
    * Information Design
    * Screen Design and Graphics
    * Fundamentals of the World Wide Web
    * Basic Web Scripting
    * Computer Animation for Multimedia & Web
    * Web Site Development
    * Sophomore Digital Portfolio
    * Introduction to Programming
    * Database Systems
    * Web Site Development II
    * Interactive Telecommunications
    cost = $15,000

    continuing education around here offers these online courses:
    Creating Web Pages
    Creating Web Pages 2
    Designing Effective Websites
    Introduction to Dreamweaver MX 2004
    Introduction to Flash MX 2004
    cost = $89 per class. Same weekly amount...

    i just want a jumping off base. Do the cont. edu classes sound better for the price than the ai bit?

    i've been searching all the registrars and icanns website, along with many technical news sites, haven't found a damn thing . . . any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

    Ok so I have this full website layout I made, and I want to be able to put links and pictures on it, and I’m pretty sure it’s an image map type of thing? I’m not sure how to encode it to put the text ON the image, and how you make the text align to specific areas. If anyone could comment with an idea or something of what I have to include in the html that would be awesome =] thanks

  10. Visual Basic 6 question

    Date: 10/12/06 (IT Professionals)    Keywords: software, sql, web

    Hi all.

    Im new to the community. Quick intro is needed I guess:

    Im a 24 year old student from the North East of England, currently studying computing for business at Northumbria University.

    Im now on my 3rd year and I have been on my work placement for about 3 months. Its great. Three lads sitting in a room, supporting an entire companies I.T resources.

    My job is also to maintain and improve upon a piece of inhouse software called TrackIT. It pretty much keeps track of all telesales activity within the entire company. They sell training to other companies such as water and eletricity.

    Anyhoo!

    TrackIT, is wrote in that lovely language visual basic 6. Now I know nothing about visual basic 6, but im done a pretty good job so far. My education was within Visual Basic.NET, but that education left alot to be desired.

    So my issue is this:

    I know this is probably a really simple question and YES I have looked on every website I can find, and used every text book I can get my hands on.

    Im astounded I cant find this anywhere.

    I very simple need to take the value which has been selected inside a datacombobox, and send it as a string to an SQL statement. The result of which would be a filtered datagrid.

    I did a test with a message Box saying, "MsgBox (dcFilterCompanyName.Item.Text)", because that code wasnt working.

    Am I being completely stupid thinking that piece of code would return the value selected in the datacombo?

    If I am, then can someone please tell me what code to use to retreive the value selected?

  13. Site monitoring tools

    Date: 10/15/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: web, hosting

    Started writing a rather simple cronScript on the company dev. server that pings and fetches the index page of the companies websites.  The purpose is to track it's status (200 or 403), latency from the perspective of the dev server, and then if the server is down for twice or more in a hour, to page me.  Before I really put more energy into it, does anyone know of a free ware system (not service) that does the same thing?

    Note:
       Scripts can not be run on the production/live servers.  I have root via SSH, but I really don't want to login to them and modify the environment in anyway unless it's to fix something.

    Why:
        Previous developer randomly picked the current hosting service and they've become unreliable (network outages w/vague explanations as to why but its not our servers)

  16. Naming Your Site

    Date: 10/17/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

    I've spent two days trying to think of a great website name. (and will spend an absurd amount of time continuing to do so if I don't have an intervention of some sort) I want it to be my freelance web design site later down the road. I'm feeling the urge to pick something creative and semi-random. However, I think I might attract more business with a more generic name, or a name that says 'designs' or 'webdesign' in it. Do you guys have any advice for me? I know I don't want something too girlie sounding or too masculine. What about having my name in the address? tashadesigns tashasdesigns (I don't really like that - but would it be a bad idea?) or sotasha.com (i thought was cute, my husband didn't) sorry for the rambling. Main question: Does the name of your website affect the traffic to it that much?

    First let me say that my only experience with building a website was using Yahoo's GeoCities. My only experience with html is basic stuff on LJ and a couple things for customizing MySpace.

    I see that the user info recommends DreamHost for web hosting, but how do you actually build a site? Is it like GeoCities where you can open a page builder?

    Date: 10/19/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, web, google

    2 of the sites I look over dominate their target keywords, placing them at the #1 spot or at least in the top 10.  So to suck in more customers off google, I was thinking of trying to add the sub-links trait that you see on websites like php.net when you google them.  I have no idea what that's called, but I'd like it if my sites could do that as well.
