1. Video camera to computer question....

    Date: 01/23/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software, web

    I am using a Panasonic Mini-DV model: PV-GS9. It has the port to be hooked up to the computer and the computer recognizes it as a "web cam", but I can't find any software online that will work to be able to transfer video onto the computer/internet. I have baby videos and my husband's wrestling shows I wanted to put online, say, on youtube.com.

    Is there any kind of program anyone might suggest? I can't find any that work and I don't have a working cd rom drive right now.

    Thanks! ^_^ ~Min

  2. chinese characters in the title tag

    Date: 01/23/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

    I'm working on a Chinese translation of a website and I've added the Chinese text into the body of the website and the characters look great. However, when I cut and paste those same characters into the title tags, I get some Chinese characters and some question marks. What's going on? Can anyone give me a solution to get rid of those question marks?

  7. Regex fun - nested "tags". (x-posted to linux)

    Date: 01/25/07 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, web

    I am still learning Regex's so doing crafted complicated patterns is just a little bit out of my reach.

    What I am trying to do:
    Messing around with different output handling schemes for a webscript. The logic I am using is that at the end output would be broken down into blocks. So inner most tags would all be appended to a buffer of that tagName. So at the end of script execution I might have 2+ buffers of names like system,application,template, etc that I can then handle. One of the justifications for investing time in this is to come up with some sort of sectionized caching system (so everything is rendered previously except say 1 small section). Otherwise if regex can't do this fast enough, another thought was to "improve" the PHP output buffering system.

    What I got: '(?:%OB_(?P[A-Z]*)%\n?(?P.*)\n?%/OB_\1%)'
    Mode: Single-Line
    Engine: PHP/PRCE

    Test data:

    %OB_SYS%
    System started: 0492
    Good to go!

  10. WMP device sync kill

    Date: 01/26/07 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: browser, web

    This is driving me crazy. I listen to an online radio station VIA Windows Media Player (11 I think, look Vista like) and the thing that bugs me the most is every time I plug in my thumb drive while listening, I get a prompt about sync stuff. Thing is, I don't want this (and I don't what extra files on my thumb drive, only 256 MB, and I tend to get big files to put on it) because I don't download music at all. Hell, almost all my MP3 files I have could fit on a 650MB CD (or whatever that smaller size that was the most common)

    Is there a way to tell Windows Media to not even bother, or do I have to go back to using my web browser to listen to the station (and have to deal with upping the volume every time I play it)

  12. Blocked sites

    Date: 01/29/07 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: web, google

    Hi,

    I hope I'm not posting an inappropriate question, but I'm hoping someone can help me.

    My work has often blocked useful internet sites (like penny-arcade.com and xbox.com), but lately they've started blocking sites that I need to access, like rentertainer.com.au (our Australian equivalent of gamefly) and even, briefly, Google. Can you believe it?

    I remember hearing some time ago about a website or sites that will allow you to bypass blocks and will retrieve websites anonymously for you. Now I'm wishing that I'd paid more attention.

    Is anyone able to point me in the right direction for something like that?

  13. phantom line break thanks to blogger?

    Date: 01/29/07 (HTML Help)    Keywords: browser, html, web

    okay, so I'm not that well versed in HTML, but I know enough to make a basic website, which I have been working on for a while now and am finally just finishing up.

    I want to have a weblog on the first page so I set up an account with Blogger. I think everything is okay, except in certain browsers Blogger puts in an extra line break in my menu header and I don't know how to fix it!

    this is what I mean:
    Blog page
    versus
    no weird line break!

    I am building the page on a Mac using Firefox. when I look at it with Safari there is no break on the blog page. when I look at it with a PC using Firefox there is.

    I tried to put that teal-green color as the background of the table row, but it didn't seem to work.

    any advice? thank you so much!

    (also, if you see anything else error-wise, let me know... and let me know if this post is not allowed. it has nothing to do with LJ layouts which are mentioned on the main page a few times. I am kind of desperate.)

  14. I need your help...

    Date: 01/30/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: cms, web

    ... I have been given the task of working on a site which is a mess of frames, etc. I don't think they care how I redo it as long as the top and bottom stay static. This leads me to a question. Is there a way that I could make the content in between scroll without using frames?

    Here's the site: http://www.tateresearch.com

    Whatever top menu bar I eventually create and whatever bottom menu bar I create, they must stay static with the centre content scrolling.

    Also, what would be a good CMS to use so they could do there own website updates without touching any of the layout?

  15. Roundcubemail email package

    Date: 01/30/07 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, programming, web, hosting

    Hello everybody,

    I am still new at PHP programming and have already picked up some tips by watching this community. This is my first time posting and I hope to solve my problem this way. Thanks in advance!

    Ok, here is what I'm trying to do. I have installed the email package 'Roundcubemail' on the hosting server and website and am trying to modify the code so that I can add a fixed message to each email that will be sent out. Something like a disclaimer at the bottom of business emails.

    File 1 -------->
    In the following directory, I found this file...

    /mysite/roundcubemail/config/main.inc.php

    and this code....
    171> // path to a text file which will be added to each sent message
    172> // paths are relative to the RoundCube root folder
    173> $rcmail_config['generic_message_footer'] = '';

    File 2 ------->
    Then, I found this file in directory...
    /mysite/roundcubemail/program/steps/mail/sendmail.inc

    and this code...
    163> // append generic footer to all messages
    164> if (!empty($CONFIG['generic_message_footer']))
    165>   {
    166>   $file = realpath($CONFIG['generic_message_footer']);
    167>   if($fp = fopen($file, 'r'))
    168>     {
    169>     $content = fread($fp, filesize($file));
    170>     fclose($fp);
    171>     $message_body .= "\r\n" . rcube_charset_convert($content, 'UTF-8', $message_charset);
    172>     }
    173>   }

    File 3 ------->
    Ok, I have created a text file 'footer.txt' and added a new directory '/mysite/roundcubemail/footer/' that now contains my footer-file.

    The contents of this file is for now...
    _____________________________________
    email footer
    _____________________________________

    I have changed line 173 in file main.inc.php to this ...
    173> $rcmail_config['generic_message_footer'] = '../footer/footer.txt';

    But alas, the message in the text-file is not added to the email sent. Any advice? Thanks!

  17. Portfolio website for a web design novice

    Date: 01/31/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

    I'm building a portfolio site of my print design work. My goal is a very simple, clean homepage - essentially one column on the left with a list of my work. When someone clicks on one of the items, say "Poster design for art show"...an image of the poster design will pop up. When a different item is clicked, the new image pops up where the poster image used to be.

    With some googling, I learned how to set "Show-Hide Layers" in the Behaviors panel, and it works. The problem is that I have about thirty items in my portfolio (each image is on a separate layer), and it's insanely tedious to go through and click "hide" on 29 other layers. It's easy to make mistakes, and I already dread updating. Also, I'm running into a problem where some layers don't get hidden if they're clicked in a certain order, and all sorts of weird quirks.

    There must be an easier way to accomplish the click-and-show-image-in-one-spot goal...after all, tons of websites use this interface. I want to learn how to do this the RIGHT way and have a perfectly functioning page and clean code!

    Any helpful advice or links to tutorials?

  18. Logitech QuickCam for Notebooks - doesn't work with ANYTHING

    Date: 02/01/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software, web

    Hey all, I'm about at my wit's end trying to get my webcam to work with ANY chat program. I purchased the Logitech QuickCam about four months ago and it works seemingly at random with MSN Messenger and AIM...but lately it hasn't worked with either. I installed the software as directed and am currently still able to record video and take photos with it on my computer, but whenever I try to connect to a friend's camera through MSN Messenger or AIM, it looks like it's trying to do something (the LED turns green), and the chat client SAYS it's connecting, but after 30 seconds, nothing happens and the chat just ends. Like I said, it was working about two months ago and I was even able to get the microphone to work (another issue I was having), but I have looked all over AIM's support page (wholly unhelpful) AND I've called Logitech, and have come up completely emptyhanded.

    I don't know if it's a firewall issue because my friend turned off his firewall once and we tried connecting...nada. The webcam is also listed in my firewall's Allowed Exceptions, and selected as the default video and voice device for both my computer AND for AIM. I have no idea what's going on; please help!

    I'm connected through a wireless network and the internet seems to be working fine on both my friend's end and mine...no idea what's going on.

    Please help! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Just a quick update here.

    I just re-launched Diana and My Wedding Announcement webpage, and I am having difficulties perfecting the CSS and HTML and how the page is viewed in different browsers. IE7 works great, Firefox 2 does NOT understand half the crap happenning and I have yet to try Opera or any other alternative browser.

    Please take a few minutes to click around on the site, if you have access to different browsers, use them all and then comment here with any formatting issues.
    Also, if anyone out there knows ANYTHING about CSS or HTML formatting for universal viewing, please, PLEASE contact me and give me hand. I would really appreciate it.

  20. Internet connection or laptop setting?

    Date: 02/01/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: browser, web

    Hello, I've been having problems connecting to www.fanfiction.net for almost three days already and I cannot find what might be the cause. I haven't altered my internet settings or anything so I'm really baffled by it. I tried checking the same site from other PCs (at our school) and it works just fine. I'm using Firefox as a browser and even if I launch my Internet Explorer, it still doesn't show up.

    Firefox always shows this message to me:

    The connection has timed out

    The server at www.fanfiction.net is taking too long to respond.

    * The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
    moments.

    * If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
    connection.

    * If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
    that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

    Please help me, I'm starting to get frustrated over this.

    I think I'm particularly having difficulties with fiction sites. I cannot connect to http://slash.boywholived.com also
