Search Engine Optimizers?
Date: 02/01/07
(WebDesign) Keywords: web
Hi folks,
Was wondering if any of you working in the corporate world have experience in working with or hiring consultants that specialize in website marketing, specifically Search Engine Optimization. My company is currently in the market for someone to help us out in this area, and I wanted to know if anyone here had any leads.
Huge thanks in advance!

Wrong Time
Date: 02/01/07
(Microsoft Windows) Keywords: web
Hello, everyone. This is my first post. How do I stop my computer (Windows XP Home Edition) from arbitrarily going back an hour in time / having the clock stop when I close the laptop? I'm CONSTANTLY having to reset the clock as it randomly messes up every 20 minutes or so. I read something on the Windows website about this happening with a certain time zone, but I'm only dealing with PST and EST, so I'm not sure if it applies to me. It annoys me most because it messes up when I'm listening to music on Last.fm and the tracks don't scrobble. Anyway, thanks for any help you may be able to provide.

Show/Hide Elements Question
Date: 02/03/07
(Javascript Community) Keywords: java, web
Hello everyone,
I have been stuck on a JavaScript question and hoped someone here might have an answer.
Here is my situation:
I am currently designing a webpage that will have hide/show elements. The idea is to list names along the left-hand side, and when one clicks the name, to have the corresponding biographical information appear in a section to the right. I found code for this from an online tutorial.
Quick One Page Information
The problem comes when I want to create a link on a separate webpage to a specific element. In other words, I would like to create a link elsewhere on the web that will load the webpage with the desired biographical information showing. I could not figure out a way to do this.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a way to create this kind of link? Or would there be better code to use for this purpose?
Thank you for your time! :)

Probably off-topic but...

(PHP Community) Keywords: php, programming, css, html, xml, asp, sql, java, web, google
As I look for alternative employment I see a lot of wanted ads asking for a web designer who are proficient in several web-programming languages (they usually specify PHP/ASP/CGI-Perl), the use of several different databasing formats (Access, SQL of some sort, Oracle) - proficient in several different forms of design (Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator, FreeHand, Quark, etc) as well as being a master of JavaScript, XHTML, XML, DHTML, CSS and any other acronym they seem to have found on google.
To me this sounds like they are asking for a web-design team wrapped into one person. Am I crazy; or are they?

Call for Papers
Web 2.0 and the Semantic Web: Hindrance or Opportunity?
The World Wide Web (Web) is in transition; a fundamental evolution of the model which underpins the traditional Web. This new Web, Web (2.0), is a mesh of enhanced semantics, push application widgets, and embedded scripting languages and was developed to pursue the promise of enhanced interactivity. The possible benefits of the Web 2.0 is great but it seems that without timely and prompt action disabled users will be barred from these benefits. Indeed, using sites which such as: Flicker, YouTube, MySpace, Google Maps, and Google Portal will rapidly become `off-limits' to disabled users. Semantic Web technologies have already shown themselves to be useful in addressing some issues of Web Accessibility. However, this new technology has not yet started to make its way into mainstream applications. Without change, will the benefits of the Semantic Web be lost? Will the promising enhanced interactivity of Web 2.0 technologies become increasingly inaccessible to disabled users? We pose the question: Web 2.0 and the Semantic Web: Hindrance or Opportunity?
In this case topics of interests include (but are not limited to):
- Advances in Web 2.0 and Semantic Web technologies;
- Tools and technologies based on Web 2.0 and Semantic Web to support Web accessibility;
- Tools and technologies to make Web 2.0 and Semantic Web applications and systems accessible;
- Design and best practice to support Web accessibility;
- Technological advances to support Web accessibility;
- End user tools;
- Accessibility guidelines, best practice, evaluation techniques, and tools;
- Psychology of end user experiences and scenarios;
- Innovative techniques to support accessibility;
- Universally accessible graphical design approaches;
- Design Perspectives;
- Adapting existing web content;
- Accessible graphic formats and tools for their creation.

Freelance website development
Date: 02/06/07
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: php, html, web
Hello all,
Just out of curiosity, how would one go about getting into a bit of freelance web development? What skills would they need? How would they advertise themselves? etc.
you see, I've been a student for a while now, and I've come across two major trends; A lot of free time, and not a lot of money, so I figured I could kill two birds with one stone. I'm pretty damn good with html and php also (all self taught though, not an official qualification in sight).
So, where would I go from here?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Sam

Is there any place I can buy those all together, pre-assembled, or would that just be to easy?
I want to use my computer has a gaming rig, and I want to stick with most of the components I have now, without having to reinstall Windows or anything, and I want to make sure it has the PCI 16x slots.

Stop Loading Page
Date: 02/06/07
(WebDesign) Keywords: web
I need to access a form in an 8MB++ webpage regularly, the form is located in the first 30Kb of the webpage.
What I want to ask is, is there a plugin for Firefox where I can stop the page from loading completely after 40Kb was downloaded? Or bookmarklet or whatever. (I'm desperate!)
Notes:
* I cannot change the said webpage
* The programmer won't change the webpage, even though we already ask like 3 years ago.
Thanks.

needed: flash aficionado with time on their hands
Date: 02/07/07
(WebDesign) Keywords: web
A fellow web-designer & collaborator friend of mine just asked me for some RUSH Flash help on a project he's working on. He's a hardcore standards-coder... doesn't really specialize in Flash. I, however, don't know enough to help him out in time--my skills are rusty & I'm not confident enough in them. So, I thought I'd pass this subcontracting opportunity on to you deserving and dedicated folk (I've admired many folks' technical problem-solving abilities here...).
Here's the deal: the website is for a band. It's pretty simple -- a flash-only set of 6 or 7 animated buttons that loads into an iframe, and 3 audio files that play continuously with stop/pause/play buttons. Pays $400, and we need it by 2/13. If you're curious/need more details, I have a Photoshop comp so you can get a good idea if it'd be worth your time & do-able. E-mail me at jmathewes [at] gmail [dot] com, please, by the end of the day. We need someone on this project right away. No nonsense... we'll sign papers, and you deliver.
