Hey there!
I'm looking for a portable web development program similar to Dreamweaver. I installed the PortableApps suite on my 1GB flash drive but it comes with NVU and NVU dosen't like to play with PHP.  Can I do something to Dreamweaver to get it on a flash drive? Is there a general guide somewhere on how to adapt programs for use on a flashdrive? Is there another program I can use that has the combined file editing and FTP capabilities like Dreamweaver? Sorry if this has been asked before, I don't have the time to search through all the past messages. Thanks!

Can anyone recommend any reliable and not too expensive UK based webhosting companies?
(only hosting, no domain name registration needed)

Necessary features:
- Linux/Apache server
- at least 150MB webspace
- bandwith/traffic on a normal scale, the more the better *g*
- PHP (version 4 okay, 5 better)
- at least one MySQL database
- FTP access and several email accounts should be a given

A plus, but not really neccessary:
- .htaccess
- cgi/perl
- shell access

Addendum:I just saw that in this comm's user info DreamHost is recommended as a webhost.
I do have a DreamHost account, mostly for dabbling around and trying out stuff, and love all their features (and low prices). But although I've never had any problems so far, hearing every now and then about down times or bad customer service makes me a bit reluctant to recommend them to a client for hosting their small business website.
Opinions, anyone?

Hi, folks. I just found out that in roughly 26 hours, I'll have to interview someone for a job at my company. That is to say, I already have a job. We're hiring someone else to do more-or-less what I already do, which is JavaScript and AJAX web development. (I occasionally have to mess with HTML, CSS and images, but that's a secondary duty.)

I've tried a few Google searches involving words like "javascript" and "ajax" prepended to "interview questions" and gotten some pretty hideous results, so I thought I'd ask here: What do you think would be good questions to ask? What questions would you ask a prospective employee for such a position? Ideally, I want to be able to figure out:

1. Does this guy actually know his stuff, or has he padded his résumé?
   
2. What's his coding and architecture philosophy like? Aside from simply knowing JS, will he actually write good code, rather than some kludged-up mess?
   
3. Will he be good to work with?

For the past five days or so, the ONE website that hasn't been loading on my computer is Deviantart. Now, I frequently use this site, and why it's suddenly shunning me, I have no idea. But it's driving me mad. Everytime I attempt to visit this site, I get your average "this page cannot be displayed" error. I've had friends visit the site, and they all say it works perfectly for them.

I'm running on Internet Explorer 7.0(and Netscape, which it also won't work in), and I'm pretty sure I've tried everything. I've deleted cookies and temporary internet files. I've even tried resetting the brower. The site isn't blocked either as far as I can tell. I'm not sure, but is it possible that I've had my IP address banned for some reason? If so, is there any way to verify this? I don't know much about the workings of computers, so....I'd much appreciate any suggestions.(:

I need to find if there exists software for live videocasting. That is, software that simulates/replaces the mixing board that a small television station might have. The ability to switch between the feed from a webcam (or even a bunch of good cameras that find their way into the computer, so, perhaps, three USB webcams), multiple AVI or MPEG videos queued and ready to play, audio sources, etc.

Does such a beast exist? Anyone?

Thanks in advance for any help. This is a probably a simple one but here goes:

I have this part of a script that doesn't wish to behave:

the db connection is in place, and when i echo back the query to the web page and copy and paste it into phpMyAdmin, the query works fine and returns my result. There should only be one row of results, which there is when I run the query, but when I try to fetch the result and store it in the variable $prefix it doesn't work. I'm not getting any errors thrown, it's just not working. Any ideas? Sorry if it's totally obvious. I'm under a zillion deadlines and have spent too long swearing at the computer over this one.

Yeah, Y!SB is getting on my last nerve.

Along with spiking from an average of 4,000 403 errors to 100,000+ 403 errors last month (and I have no idea what caused this), the site I run is getting constant 500 errors now anytime someone tries to post a news article via Movable Type

Does anyone know of a good business-oriented web hosting service that can easily support a site that generally has 150k pageviews/10-15GB of traffic (and this will most likely be increasing).

The things I'm running that I would like to continue using are:
Movable Type
awstats
phpAdsNew

As far as I'm aware, any hosting company should be able to let those work without a hitch, yet Y!SB is giving me a lot of shit the last two months and I'm getting pretty sick of them.

A good number of POP-capable email addresses would be nice, too, since if we leave Y!SB for web hosting we may want new email hosting as well.

I have three iframes there...but when you bring the browser window in and out (using your mouse) the top frame gets eaten up by the bottom ones. Is there any way to 'lock' the top and left frame so it doesn't change size. I put in the 'noresize' tag, but that didn't seem to make any difference. Any help would be appreciated! Take a look at my html, maybe I've done the tags wrong.

Hi guys,

I design and manage a site for my best friend, the Book Brothel*, which had been running for the last two years on Movable Type. Our installation messed up, we couldn't fix it, and our webhosting company was pretty much useless and we've now signed up with another host and have our eye on recreating the site in Textpattern.

I've played around with Textpattern some, and can be pretty creative with content management systems, but I was wondering if anyone out there has examples they can link me to of brilliant implementation of TxP sites?

The only site I know of offhand which is run on Textpattern is the website of a long lost friend, at Erisfree.com, and it's pretty wicked - but I thought asking around here may yield some suprises!

Thanks in advance! I'll be sure to come back here for suggestions when I get something up and running. :)

On this page I am trying to use the show/hide javascript technique. I can't seem to get it to work even with all the tutorials and such online (and I've actually done this before), so I am back to square one and confused as ever.

[EDIT: I am well aware there is no actual javascript there because I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START.]

As you can see, none of the links actually work; I only uploaded the one page. But you can see what I'm getting at, right? All the links are just that; links. The plain text is what I want to open up the lower options. If that makes sense. For example, when one clicks About Us one will see Meet the Instructors, Facilities, and Schedule. When one clicks Meet the Instructors, down will come the list of names. Clicking again will hide the options.

I am using FrontPage.

The web site needs to be up ASAP so I need this menu to work. Plllleeeease please please help me out *begs on knees*

A friend of mine's d/l speed is shot to hell when she tries downloading much of anything off a webpage (like an audio or video file). Perplexed, I gave her connection a speed test and it came out with the same results as mine (about .50 seconds). Now, I have tried to download the same thing, from the same site and my speed is normal. I've checked her CPU usage and that's at around 32% or maybe a little lower at times. Web pages load normally, but whenever she tries to download content from them, it's just total nonsense. I opened up GetRight and loaded the url of the download into there and it won't let her d/l saying it's "Anti-leech protected". But what puzzles me is that I had no problem doing the exact same thing on my end. I checked the settings and I made sure that they were exactly the same as mine and it still refuses to allow her to d/l doing anything other than letting it load in quicktime on the site, or right clicking the available link and downloading it that way. Everything is being done through Firefox and I switched over to Internet Explorer out of desperation for ideas and that is acting the same way. I've also tried downloading directly and through GetRight while getting a file she wanted off DivShare (I uploaded it hoping that one of the options would work), and it's still the same problem... very slow, and "Anti-leech protected". I am stumped. Does anyone have a solution or explaination or anything?

A few months ago my quicktime player seems to have become power hungry and took over all uses of sound clips, video files, and flash sites/games in my mozilla web browser. I've tried playing with the settings and nothing has changed, the only thing that has worked is deleting quicktime, but when I did that my iTunes wouldn't open anymore, and I'd rather have iTunes then vidoes and such. I downloaded Internet Explorer the other day and it plays videos without quicktime and it works just fine, except that Internet Explorer keeps freezing up my computer and making funny noises.

Anyone know how I can get quicktime to leave my firefox alone? :(
