  8. Making .CUR files?

Date: 02/08/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: software, web

    I'm a bit flumoxed...

I don't really have much experience dealing with Web image-file formats outside of the .jpeg, .gif and .png arena, and have been searching with no resolution for a solution that would allow me to export, or draw a .cur file (custom cursor/pointer).

I found this piece of Windows software, which might be ok (I was highly turned off by the trial software), but highly prefer a PhotoShop or ImageReady plugin or even GIMP.

    Any recommendations? Thanks much!

  14. Web Development/Design in Linux?

Date: 02/11/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, mysql, sql, web, linux, apache

I hate to be a bit obtuse. However, I wanted to gather people's thoughts on using Linux as a web development/design platform.

Are there any users out there that have used Linux and/or Windows in this capacity?

If so, what web dev/design tools for Linux do you find helpful and/or comparable to Windows-based applications (outside of GIMP, Apache, MySQL, LDAP and PHP-Eclipse, of course)?

Finally, if your user requirements for a website gave you the choice of either Mono or PHP, which would you pick and why?

    Thanks in advance!

  15. Grayscale Image Filter Code?

Date: 02/11/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: java, web, seo

So, I wanted to make a website with a particular effect on all my images, including images with links. All of the images on the page will appear in grayscale through a filter, and then on mouseover, they will fade into the original color scheme of the picture, and then when there is no mouseover, it will return to normal. In an ideal world, the mouseover will not change the entire image back to the original coloring, but only just a portion, like a spotlight. I remember seeing this done before on a website I can no longer find. It seemed to also glow with silver in the color change.

The codes I have found online over the last few hours are similar, but not quite what I want (most have been javascript with fade elements or opacity that work on the whole image). I was wondering if anyone knew of a code that was like the one I had in mind or would be willing to help me make it from existing codes that are similar?

  16. how to hide desktop icons

Date: 02/12/07 (Microsoft Windows)    Keywords: web, seo

I just updated to Windows XP, and I need some help. In 98SE, it is possible to hide the desktop icons by switching over to web active view. Is there a way to hide all desktop icons in XP? Thanks for any help. :)

EDIT: Argh, sorry to bother you all. I figured it out. For future reference to anyone trying to attempt the icon-hiding maneuver: right-click on the desktop, mouseover Arrange Icons By, and left-click Show Desktop Icons.

  17. webcam drama

Date: 02/12/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software, web

I need serious help, guys. I'm completely clueless about what to do.

Less than a year ago I purchased a Packard Bell Platinum XI, with the Windows '98 program installed on it.

The woman who sold it to me threw in everything that she used with it, including a webcam. The webcam is nondescript. It's about an inch to 1 1/2 inch long, with a little black screen on the front and the Packard Bell symbol on the top. On the bottom is a sticker with some identification numbers or something of the like.

The thing plugs in just fine into the back of the tower...I just have no idea how to turn it on! There's no on/off switch on the actual webcam. Any search I make on my computer to figure out how to activate it comes up empty. There's no program for it, no indication that it has been used on this computer before.

Please help! Is there a software program that I need or something?

  18. Help?

Date: 02/12/07 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: software, web

Fellow geeks, the time has come to upgrade my dusty, worn out and quasi combustible dell inspiron 8600 lappy. I've been reading reviews and forums for about 3 months now trying to decide which notebook is best for me.

    Short description of it's uses:

I am a full time Graphic Designer (Daytime work for a software dev. co. in GUI dept. , Freelance Designer/Web Designer by night) I have a powerful machine at work and a soon to be updated machine at home. I need something in between and something I can carry with me everyday. Powerful enough to do the usual Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign/Dreamweaver/Visual Studio and maybe some light Unreal Tournament/Quake III i'm not looking for a gaming rig but if I can run some older FPS on it to kill some time at lunch... that would be lovely.
Size (and weight) Matters! I've been luggin' this 9+ lb lappy for far too long!

These are my choices so far (Mac's are not an option, not looking for a flame war with fan boys just... not my thing):

    Asus W7j   VS   Asus A8j

I'd love to hear any input.

    Thanks,

P.S. I will not be running vista, will stick to XP Pro/ Suse dual boot.

  19. Small question

Date: 02/12/07 (Javascript Community)    Keywords: java, web

I started learning Javascript about ... an hour ago. I've just been playing around with it so far, but could anyone tell me why this breaks the Interweb doesn't work?

    Rawr

What I was expecting to happen was that "More text" would be printed/echoed (what's the correct terminology for JavaScript..?) next to "Rawr", or rather, on the next line since it's in a paragraph. However, if I mouse over it, the "Rawr" gets over written with "More text" and the page continues to load something forever.

Any one tell me why it's doing that? I'm not saying "please help me fix this!", I'm just interested in how it works. If that makes sense.

I'll add an lj-cut if anyone asks.
