Date: 04/30/07 (Javascript Community)    Keywords: browser, html, web

Hello, I joined because I need a little help with a website I'm working on as a part of an assignment for school.

All I need to be explained is how to create a pop-up window for a HTML site.
I'm going to to hyperlink the word "Pictures" on my site so that when they click it, the URL it was linking to doesn't open in the same browser window or a completely new one, but a pop-up that is 400 x 300px appears with the flash content I have premade for it. It should be simple to shut by just clicking the X in the corner.

I'd be very grateful if anyone could give me the code to copy-paste, and some simple explanation :) thanks!

Date: 05/02/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: web

Okay, so this is going to seem like a stupid question.

I'm trying to register my ftp info with this site designer that I've used successfully with antoher site before, but it's telling me my ftp info is invalid.
My webhost gives me this info:

    login: bobbseytwins.about.vg
    password: -
    home directory: /usr/home/freehost/about.vg/b/bo/bob/bobbseytwins
    host name:bobbseytwins.about.vg

    the design site asks for:
    hostname:
    user id:
    password:

When I enter what the host says, it comes up as invalid. I also don't understand how the login and host name are the same thing?

  7. backgrounds and CSS

Date: 04/30/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: web

Hello all, I am having a problem implementing part of my design. The novelty of the design is that there is a subtle background on which translucent tables with information appear. I seem to be having difficulty laying out the background in a suitable fashion. Here are some images that might help you better understand.

This is a scaled-down image of the background I would like:
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Basically, I want there to be a background gradient that goes down to a solid color after some time. Besides that repeat background gradient I also have the upper curves image and the lower-right curves image:
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
I'd like the lower and upper curves to remain in their sports regardless of screen size.

I heard someone mention something to me about the z-coordinate, so I guess layering the items in that fashion. Do any of you have experience "layering" image items to create your backgrounds or other visual web elements? In the past I have created a class that repeated the background image and fixed it to the top, repeating only in the x-direction for a gradient background, but what about this kind of scenario? Thanks for all help in advance!

  10. Temp Passwords

Date: 05/04/07 (PHP Community)    Keywords: web

This is probably lame….If you think I’m going in the wrong direction, please shoot me your thoughts.

I have some users I want to support but they always loose their passwords.

The information is a little delicate, so I don’t want to store the passwords without encryption.
…And I don’t want to always be resetting people’s password information.

So I thought I’d write a little script.

Entering your email address on a webpage verifies the user is in the DB and sends them a temporary password in email that would only work for maybe 10 minutes or so.

Other than that, it would work like a typical secure site, except that I would check the (time) expiration of the password regularly.

(And I thought I might occasionally setup a CRON JOB (?) to wipe the DB of long-gone passwords.-----but I’ve never written a cron job so I’m not sure what might be entailed.)

    Is this wildly stupid?

    Hi everyone!
I'm new here,  but expect to come back soon enough with real insight and input.  In the meantime, I'm working on a tech report (whoever said going back to college would be easy needs to be shot on sight) and could use your help.

I've developed a questionnaire for web designers/developers and would love your input.  It will be used for a feasibility report that will analyze and recommend a core set of web languages for training and hiring employees of, say, a small webdesign company.  I am willing to forward to anyone the completed report if requested and am also willing to provide copies of other assignments that have been part of this report.  After all, I look at unsolicited surveys like this with quite a bit of skepticism and usually want some background.

If you frequent other webdesign forums/communities, please excuse the likelihood of verbatim cross posting, as I am desperately in need of responses (I need quantifiable results within two weeks, yikes!) and don't much have the time to rewrite an introduction six times.

If you have additional input beyond what I'm asking in the survey, please feel free to give your opinions.  Thanks in advance for your time and help.

  13. csrss.exe

Date: 05/06/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: rss, software, virus, web, spyware, google

I'm trying to help my Mom out with her computer.

She bought a Sony Vaio desktop in Winter 2003/2004 at Best Buy. She bought it to replace the Gateway desktop that my brothers had basically killed. She intended for them to use the old computer and she'd use the new one - but slowly my brothers got hold of her computer too.

We ran a virus scan this week and she had something like 30+ "threats" that were spyware, adware, or viruses.

I backed up all her photos to CDs and then used the Vaio Recovery Wizard which is supposed to restore your compute to the day the factory built it.

Now her 30+ threats are gone (where Norton couldn't get rid of them before), but she's still getting the same error message when she starts up her computer (she has to hit F2 to get to some screen - then from that screen she has to hit Esc and then Enter), but she's gotten used to that (I have no idea what the hell happened there!) All night, every couple minutes, she's been getting these error messages saying that she needs a registry cleaner, that there's an error, etc.

We Ctrl-Alt-Del to get the Task Manager up and click on the error message to find the process. The process is csrss.exe. I Googled it and it says that is a normal System file - but if it's located elsewhere it's a virus. Well, it is located in the folder it's supposed to be in, but she's constantly getting these messages. They're telling her that her system is corrupted and she needs to go to a website to download a registry cleaner. We tried about 3 of those web addresses, but she keeps just getting software that finds errors, but won't let her fix them unless she pays $39.95 (or whatever that particular program charges) for the program.

Any ideas? Should she pay for one of those programs? Should she just keep ignoring the pop-ups? Or should she just suck it up, bring her computer to Best Buy / Geek Squad, and have them fix it for her?

Date: 05/07/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, web

Hi! I'm hoping someone here can help me find the answer to a problem that has been driving me nuts today.

Can anyone here tell me how to set the user agent string in a PHP script that accesses a remote file? (My web host is Dreamhost, and I have PHP 5.2.1.)

I've tried to find info about this on the web, but the info I found (such as in this tutorial) didn't work for me. I tried it in a script that remotely accessed a file on another website of mine, on which other site I then looked at the log and did NOT find the user agent string I had tried to set according to the instructions in the above-linked tutorial.
