  6. setting up domain hosting

    Date: 05/09/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web, yahoo

    I have a question.

    I just bought a domain from Yahoo. I was looking and I found someone else to host me. She e-mailed me all this information [under cut]

    Here is the information for your domain.
    +===================================+
    | New Account Info |
    +===================================+
    | Domain: -
    | Ip: -
    | HasCgi: y
    | UserName: -
    | PassWord: -
    | CpanelMod: x
    | HomeRoot: /home
    | Quota: 800 Meg
    | NameServer1: -
    | NameServer2: -
    | NameServer3:
    | NameServer4:
    | Contact Email:
    +===================================+
    Your ftp info (when the domain resolves) is:

    ftp.DOMAINHERE.net
    username: -
    password: -

    I took out all the information she gave me. Now my question is. Where do I put all this information? I went to Yahoo's DNS Management thing and to Change Nameservers but it says that Yahoo has to be either the Primary or Secondary [the girl gave me 2 nameservers]. I'm lost with that. Also I have no idea where to put the IP address and everything else.

    I know the FTP info goes into the FTP Client [which i'm using SmartFTP, btw].

    Any help would be greatly appreciated. I e-mailed the girl twice and have yet got gotten responses, so thats why i'm posting this here.

  7. free web design software?

    Date: 05/10/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: software, html, web

    Hi, I'd like to design a simple web page for a branch of a nonprofit youth organization. Any suggestions on free software I can download? I've edited simple HTML in the past, but now I was hoping for a WYSIWYG kind of thing. I downloaded FreeSerifSoftware, but I'd like to know what else is out there. Thanks.

    Date: 05/10/07 (MySQL Communtiy)    Keywords: php, mysql, software, database, sql, postgresql, web, linux

    I am currently working on 2 great jobs for Linux-loving database folk.

    1-MySQL and PHP software engineer in PA near Philly (NE). This is for a young software co founded by a guru who had already built another company. He wants hot programmers who will grow with the company. He currently is looking for a Sr person as well as 1-2 junior folk.

    1- Linux DBA in Utah - a company with several websites and millions of pageviews and transactions/day. Needs both senior and junior database tuners to keep their PostgreSQL DBS running smoothly. Every millisecond counts. He will take people w/ MySQL and Linux admin and perl  background for the junior position. Full benefits, great work and flexible working conditions, and powder days!

    My email is on my info page if you want to pass this on. Thanks!

  10. A question concerning tables..

    Date: 05/10/07 (HTML Help)    Keywords: browser, html, web

    I recently joined this community to see if I could get some help or advice with my new website. It's been a few years since I've built a website, and there is one issue that keeps nagging at me.

    I was wondering if there was a way to keep a level top to a table, or a way to attach a scrollbar without the use of iframes. In the past, I used iframes for everything, but I know now all of the problems and annoyances they can make for browsers. My problem is that my middle bottom td needs to expand down to accomodate more information and images on certain pages, but I would like the top of the table level with the sidebars. When the information expands, it pushes upwards and makes the table uneven.

    My case in point is here http://www.studiopsycho.com/art.html.

    Thank you in advance for any help or advice you may have!

  12. Radios on webpages and song storage

    Date: 05/10/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: web

    Hello! Thanks for the earlier help! Now I have another question.

    I am currently helping someone set up their own webpage in Geocities. They want to have a scroll down radio on their front page, for which I have already found the code. However, you have to link to the URL of the song's location, and it doesn't look like Geocities allows you to upload MP3s and the like. If this IS possible, I'd like to know how it's done, or where I might be able to "store" the song (much like how you can store video clips at PhotoBucket.com) and link to it that way. (I found a site called Radio.Blog but I still don't think it would work through Geocities).

    I did warn her that some people don't like meeting music as soon as they click on a page, but she is determined to have this.

    She'll probably kill me if I can't figure this out. I hope this all made sense. Thanks!

  13. Flash (and other format) Encoding - average file sizes

    Date: 05/12/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

    I encode many video for the web in various formats , QT, WM, Flash, etc. Depending on the size / type of file / action vs talking heads, the file size can vary.

    I was curious what file sizes all of you guage per minute of video. For example, would you shoot for 3MB/min for flash video...on an average broadband connection? What about QT? Windows Media?

    Again, I know many factors go into the encode process, but what average total file size per minute do you shoot for?

    Thanks!

  15. Rich Text Cut/Copy/Paste on GoogleDocs and LJ

    Date: 05/13/07 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser, java, security, web, google

    If you've ever edited a document in the word processor of docs.google.com and right clicked to select "copy" or "paste"; you've likely seen a message telling you that Firefox/Mozilla doesn't support the copy/cut/paste functionality. You can see a similar error message in LJ's post/comment web interface: copy and paste isn't allowed?

    Well, it just ain't true! Our preferred browser simply has some security settings that must be modified to allow clipboard functions from Javascript. Just add the following to your user.js file:

    user_pref("capability.policy.policynames", "allowclipboard");
    user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.sites", "http://docs.google.com");
    user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.Clipboard.cutcopy", "allAccess");
    user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.Clipboard.paste", "allAccess");

    The same technique can also be used to activate the copy/paste right click in the rich text editor on LJ, but I'll leave that as an exercise for the reader.

  16. McDonalds.com

    Date: 05/15/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: technology, web

    Is it just me or does McDonalds have a really awful web layout? http://www.McDonalds.com

    Here is a note I wrote to McDonalds about it:
    Your website is really awful. I've been looking around the net for all the major brands I can think of (I'm a designer/developer and am always looking to see what other designers come up with) and I expected a corporation as big as McDonalds to have a better page than this. I realize not many of your customers have any need for McWeb interaction, but as a major (perhaps one of THE major) corporations in the world, you should do some justice to your product and have a nice webpage. You might want to take a look at what http://www.gotmilk.com/ has done with the get the glass campaign http://www.gettheglass.com/ for example. I would think that particularly with all the contests you have going that you could come up with something better than this. I would suggest aiming at more content and a more interactive web 2.0 layout. The future is now, after all, and if McDonalds has been able to adapt and survive, even grow as a corportation for the past 50 years, you'd think you would be keeping up with the times and technology of 2007.

    Whereas, oddly enough Burger King seems to hire pretty good designers: www.bk.com

    On a different note, if anyone knows of some really excellent corporate pages (especially retail) I'd appreciate you pointing me in the right direction. Thanks in advance!

    Hi everyone, just stumbled across this forum in search of my answer for a project.

    Our teacher has asked us to do a plan for a non-existant client. We have to create 4 different deliverables one of them is a website. I'm trying to figure out if you have your own company who would do what, how long it would probably take and what would the cost/charge be per hour vs flat rate.

    Anyone that can help me with this? Thanks!

    Date: 05/15/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: software, html, java, web

    Hi everyone,

    After ten years out in 'the real world' I've returned to college and am studying website design. So far I've taken two courses; HTML and Javascript. This summer I am signed up for a course on Dreamweaver...so I am finally leaving the land of Notepad ++ for fancier software.

    My javascript professor recommended buying studio 8 even though the course only requires dreamweaver. My class starts in roughly two weeks. Does anyone have any recommendations of where to buy from, what a good price would be, etc.?

    Thanks for the help.

  24. Editing Links in Pop-Out Menus, But Where?

    Date: 05/17/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html, asp, java, web

    I'm currently working for this company. It's my responsibility to edit the website.

    I'm having a problem finding where exactly I can edit the links for the pop-out menus. I'm relatively new to ASP, but I've been fine for most editing thus far as the majority of the code is actually HTML.

    I am not seeing which file has the pop-out parts of the menu. I found the ASP file for the menu, but it doesn't seem to have the pop-out parts. I know the code has to be somewhere, I'm just having trouble finding it. I think it's mainly because I'm not seeing the file names for the items linked in the pop-out menus anywhere in the file for the menu.

    I'm suspecting it has to do with the JavaScript, but I've never used "cswmShow" before, so I don't fully understand how it's working.

    I'd really appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction. Thank you!
