1. DVD-R / DVD WRITER HELP NEEDED

Date: 06/18/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software, web, google

my computer has a dvd writer, but i've never used it. i've had the computer for over a year, so i figured it was about time. yesterday, at target, i picked up some cheap "e-gear at target record: dvd-r" discs. i made this fun dvd with some software (arcsoft showbiz2) on my computer. i went to put in the disc, but this is where the problem is/starts.

i put one of this blank dvd-r's in the "hp dvd writer/cd-writer combo". (i've used it as a cd-writer, but never as a dvd writer, like i said before.) this cursor/icon (it's a pointer with a small cd beside it) appears for a moment, but that's all that happens. when i look at the drive under "my computer," it just says "dvd/cd-rw drive." the properties have it named as HP DVD Writer 300n. everything appeared to be working normally under the properties, but nothing is recognizing these discs. so, i (re)installed the drivers. i restarted the computer, and it said "new hardware installed--dvd writer" or whatever. so i'm pretty sure the computer is recognizing the dvd writer. (but i could be wrong, because i've never used it before.) because of this, i'm lead to assume that the media is "bad." i tried multiple discs, but all of them have done the same thing. i googled the discs though, and i found a few websites where people acted like they worked.

what do you all think is wrong? do you have anything else for me to try? (if it's the dvd-r's, do you know if target will take them back? lol) i'm sort of upset, because i was excited about my first dvd (which i had a fun time making, btw).

also....i'm running windows xp, service pack 2. i really appreciate any help you can give me. thanks!

  3. content script?

Date: 06/19/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, web

I have a website that's currently using b2 (one of my partners installed it last year). We really don't like it and want to change to something else, but this is a new area for me as I've never used something like this. I'm wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a PHP script for content management. There's too much stuff to just make static pages (artist profiles, reviews, calendar, etc).

  4. SOAP in Python

Date: 06/19/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, web, apache

Has anyone built a SOAP based application in Python? I was looking at using Mod_Python under apache to create some web services and wanted to get some feedback. Its going to be that or use PHP at which I am already quite familiar. The greater control over apache offered by Mod_Python vs PHP and the ability to have byte compiled files pre built are making me take a good look at Python for this.

    PROBLEM SOLVED. THANK YOU, ZACHKESSIN

    Hey all,

I have a generic includes script that I deploy for all new sites (I run a small web design company).  It has basic page formatting and a ready-made menu system all ready for instant deployment.  The script itself prints nothing--it simply defines a lot of functions that I then use to make the magic of the site.  I'm not an expert PHPer (I just read 3/4 of a book a while back), but I know my way around.

This script/library (I don't know the jargon) has had many many miles and hasn't once given me problems (except for the original bugs in its early versions).  Only..  Now it's not doing anything I want it to.  Quite simply, it's not doing anything.  I have no idea what I've changed, but now all it's doing is printing "" on every page that includes it.  I have seen php do this before, but I don't remember what I did to make it do this in the past.

I reiterate that the script itself doesn't have a single "print" or "echo" line outside of a function.  Yet if I access the script directly it gives me the same result (printing the html and body start/close tags).

I have tried disabling certain functions with the all-mighty */  /*, but I can't seem to root-out the problem.  If need-be, I'll post the whole script here, but I'd like to know if anybody knows what causes PHP to print the html and body tags instead of sending an error or simply printing nothing at all.

Any help would be *greatly* appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

  6. i hope i'm in the right place...

Date: 06/21/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: web

hi there. i have a quick question about the temporary internet files that are found by first going to i.e. internet options, then selecting 'settings' for temp. internet files (on general tab), and then finally view files. (i'm trying to be as specific as possible so you'll know EXACTLY what i'm asking about.)

anyway, i've noticed that all websites i've visited, even ones i've deleted from i.e.'s history view, are stored in that folder.

my question is: are the only sites stored in there the ones that i've CLICKED ON (accessed knowingly).. or are sites from ads (NOT clicked on / directly accessed) stored as well? for example, if i went to abc.com and an ad for xyz.com was on that site BUT I DIDN'T CLICK ON it, would xyz.com appear in the aforementioned temp int. files folder?

hopefully someone can help. thanks a million in advance.

  7. multipage survey...

    Date: 06/21/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

This is more a coding thing than a web design issue...but maybe someone here can help me.

I need some help doing something that is probably quite simple.

I've been using a basic form for email sign ups..the results of which are then e-mailed to me. That works fine.

What i need now is a way to create a survey with about 15 questions the results of which will be e-mailed to me.

I can understand how to do this if it's on one page. But how do i fix it so that you only view one question per page...then submit to go to the following question... ??

I'm a bit lost and .. not really even sure what to search under to get an answer.

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks

  8. i need some help

Date: 06/22/05 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, web

I've ran into a problem which i can't solve nor understand.. so i'm gonna need your masterminds to help me out.. if you can. thanks ;)

    Description
i'm using php sessions and when i run my site on my computer, it runs smoothly. no problems. but when i uploaded to my host server my session values started to get lost. like, i set a certain variable with a different value, and two pages after (or simply reloads) that value either disappears or returns to the old value..

i ran a few tests, and realised i suspect it was due to a php.ini option.. "register_argc_argv". If i have it On (which i need it to be, since i'm using argv's throughout my website), this "leaks" occur, but if i set it off, it works out fine, apparently.

    Test pages
Check out these two pages, the only difference between them is the php.ini. on one it has the register_argc_argv on, and the other has it off.

What does the test page code do?
The code simply starts the session with session_start(), and then print_r()'s the $_SESSION. After that it echo's that it's gonna change a certain session variable's value, and does it. source code is available below.

    "How do i test it?"
Just open one at a time, and wait it to load. at first the $_SESSION should be empty, of course. after that, reload a couple of times. it should have the value set after the 1st reload..

anyways, you probably know what i'm asking..
Is there any link between register_argc_argv and how php handles sessions?

    Page1 (register_argc_argv ON)
    http://files.andr3.net/Untitled.php

    Page2 (register_argc_argv OFF)
    http://www.andr3.net/Untitled.php
(if you happen to see the variable disappearing, the error is still there after all. i have refreshed it dozens of times, and it's always there)

    Here's the page code: http://wwww.andr3.net/Untitled.phps

If you need to have a look at the php_info() page, let me know.

i've searched the web, asked around irc.. and nothing. :-\

    Thanks!

  9. Secure Online storage - read/write access for set user group

Date: 06/22/05 (Software)    Keywords: php, mysql, sql, security, web, linux, yahoo

I have a group of users (100 or so) that need read/write access to a document (excel) of sensitive information. Since they are all over the place, they requested a web application to be able to access from anywhere whenever they need to modify or look at this document. I'm trying to figure out what is the best way to provide a secure way to only allow these specific users to access this document.
    ideas have included:

Plone - complex, looking for simplicity
phpBB - requires me to set up a mysql linux box somewhere which might be possible
Yahoo groups - not very secure but basically what i want

any other ideas? Security of this information is the biggest priority. i currently have both linux/windows available to host.

i know some html, coldfusion, asp, but hosting coldfusion is a problem which is why i'm looking for preconfigured apps if possible.

  11. Enrollment forms and information fields

    Date: 06/22/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

I have recently joined a research project for which I've been appointed to make a few updates on a very unhealthy website. I have been asked to add an enrollment form and I was given a printed document to follow that seems to request pretty basic user information. Anyway, I would like to know before I get started the best way to go about this, overall. I will be using Dreamweaver and am unsure of a few specific items: How and where do I store the input data? Where are the options located to build the boxes for users to enter information? I once experimented with FrontPage years ago on this, but I'm sure you wouldn't urge me to use that. Any help or links to guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Here's the page:

    http://www.shifuimam.com/php_tutorials/database_trial/drfe/resources_lj.php?id=1&sort=codedesc

See the little cross things next to "Assemblies,Engineering" and "Assemblies,Manufacturing"? Click 'em. They open a litle box with revision history information for that document. I'm using a little javascript I found online to swap the image between the "+" and the "-" (like browsing a folder tree in Windows Explorer, etc etc).

However, the script isn't working correctly. I want each image to switch independently...if you click the first "+" it switches to a "-", but if you click the "+" in the next row, it doesn't switch. Then you have to click them each a few times to get them both with no history showing and with the "+" displayed. What do I need to fix?

    Script:

The images are coded with the "id" and "name" objects, as such:

There is also an onclick event for the tags surrounding the images, which is the script that shows/hides the blue boxes, so I need to use the onclick event in the image tag (unless I expanded on my show/hide script to include the image swapping...

    Help is appreciated.

  19. html tables for community info page

Date: 06/24/05 (HTML Help)    Keywords: html, web

Hi. I was wondering if anyone could help me out with creating a table to organize my community's info page so that the edges of my text line up with the edges of my "headers." If you look at the info page of my community '[info]'squittified, I think you'll see what I mean. I know I've got to put all of my userinfo including my main header at the top into a table with each item in a different table row/column/cell, but I'm not really sure how to do that. Any help or suggestions would be great! Thanks!

Oh yeah. Or if anyone can suggest a good table html website, that'd be awesome too.
