1. Server Issues

Date: 01/09/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: web, apache

At my job we seem to not have the most competant IT department, so in my effort to help rather than criticize I'm looking into ways to help them out. One of the problems that they seem to have is that their web server (which I'm assuming has IIS 6, or maybe 5) will get bogged down to the point where it has to be rebooted. They host a mix of .NET and Frontpage pages. I seriously doubt that this is how things are "supposed" to be, because then Apache would have a great ace in the hole. Anyways since I'm not very good at server administration (and apparently neither are these guys) is there anything any of you can think of that would cause such problems? It seems like there's a problem with resources not being freed up or something along those lines. If anyone has any ideas/experiences with this it would be appreciated. Thank you.

Well it seems that this journal community has not communed for quite some time.
almost a year since the last post by me.
you know you can post to this as well, all you other members :).
well bidness has slowed down alot in this valley for custom web based apps so i have gone back to building custom homes for a while.
its nice, but it can be a pain in the back to go to that from sitting in a nice leather executive to building custom made homes for people.
well as that is the case, i have been out of the loop for a lil bit concerning new things added into the php function libs.
but if anyone ever wanted to post to this community about stuff, it would be a first and quite cool to discuss new techniques or answer questions.
    peace

oh btw if anyone is playin eq2 let me know cuz i just bought that to try it out and if you play we could meet up and rp for a bit.

I informed in my previous post that I have decided to shun all java frameworks for my current project and develop with basic Java / J2SE components instead. Here is a synopsis of my journey as it is unfolding. Today I was working with JDBC, doing the simple job of fetching certain data from the web [...]

  4. Hypothetical Pricing Question

Date: 01/09/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html, web

"If you had a the money, and wanted someone to make you a webpage with five pages of content, minimal serverside stuff, and a bit of spiffy DHTML on the clientside, how much would you be willing to pay?"

I ask this, and will also give a bit of background on why. I'm starting up a part-time on the side webdesign studio with two other people. Between the three of us we have a lot of experience and each of us specializes in a different area; graphics, serverside code, and dynamic clientside code.

I'd like to know what any of you would be willing to pay as a lower-end figure (I do not however, plan to partake in 'bidding' wars to get a client) for a non-corporate page, and a corporate page.

    Many thanks in advance!

    ***EDIT***
I should of mentioned, I have read the past articles about pricing by the hour, but I would like to have a nice figure for a base price for that kind of site. A friend of mine suggested something in the range of $300-$500, this including 2 months of 'customer support', basically helping the user to update their site/set them up with FTP, or fix minor bugs (read: limited warranty).

  5. damn you video!

what's a good filesize for video on the web?

beyond that, what's some good (free?) OS X software that can compress video. my boss wants me to put up some videos for the new site and all (which looks amazing thanks to you guys and the folks over at graphicdesign), but right now they're 10-13mb each and i'm quite sure that's a bandwith disaster waiting to happen.

  6. php frameworks and such

Date: 01/09/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: cms, php, html, database, security, web

    Hey all,

I know there's been a couple posts about this recently, so if I'm asking redundant questions, sorry.

A friend of mine has come up with a pretty novel idea for a MySpace-ish site, but for a specific niche market (kind of like those CatSpace and DogSpaces that exist) - users will have profiles, photos, a blog, message boards, send friend requests, yadda yadda yadda, you've seen it all before. I'm going to be developing the initial setup myself (since we have no money), and this is a somewhat long term project that I'll be picking at casually for a little while.

Right now I'm trying to figure out if I should give this a go coding from scratch, or use an existing CMS type solution (like Mambo, Joomla, Drupal, etc). I'd really like to code it myself, as I think it could be a fun project to work on. I'm a pretty solid PHP programmer, but as I have a feeling that this idea could jump in popularity pretty quick, I really want to make sure I keep this thing as efficient as possible for a large user base. For instance, I don't want to go making another MySpace which I think runs horribly as a web app compared to even LiveJournal.

Currently I use PEAR's DB_DataObject or my database interactions and I've just gotten into Smarty for templating, though I'm sure I'm not using either to their fullest potential. I saw mention of a couple of development environments and frameworks in someone's recent post looking for a visual studio-esque PHP environment - http://www.livejournal.com/community/php/388602.html but I've never used any of these.

I'm not really concerned here with using a "rapid development" framework - I don't mind coding, I like it - but what I'm really concerned with is stability, efficiency and security - I know of course that these also rely heavily on how well I code, and using a good coding environment or framework won't do the coding for me, but there have to be some tools/frameworks/etc out there that pros are using that I just haven't moved onto yet, and I wanted to see what you guys (and gals) are using on some of your bigger projects.

    - I know this comes up a bunch, but does anyone else think would it be handy at all for us as a community to maybe organize some of the more useful threads and frequently asked (and answered) questions in the php community at a separate location? Doing just a search on the community doesn't necessarily give you anything about the quality of the responses, and it may even be nice to be able to 'browse' solutions/posts by categories or something; maybe we could have some sort of quality ranking on posts, or some way to identify posts that contain questions that get asked all the time. I don't think this would be too tricky to put together, and I'd be willing to work on it, but I don't know if anyone would even use it?

  7. Firefox Extension Issues

Date: 01/10/06 (Web Hosts)    Keywords: browser, web

Not sure how many people use Firefox or the Web Developer Extension, but it seems there is a conflict with it somewhere. I noticed that Firefox was not loading when I tried to launch a new instance, however the process was listed in the Task Manager [and using about 53,000 K of memory]. Clicking links in pages resulted in no response from Firefox as well. I asked a friend who also uses FF and we compared our extensions, the two that we both have in common are:

    -Tabbrowser Prefrences 1.2.8.8
    -Forecastfox 0.8.2.5

Not sure if it is a conflict with one of these extensions, or just a bug with the Web Developer extension. I disabled the Web Developer extension, and everything is back to normal. but I thought I'd let people know incase they are having similar issues :D

  11. most images, thumbnails, placeholders not loading

Date: 01/11/06 (Mozilla)    Keywords: java, security, web

After switching to FF 1.5, iam facing these annoying problems.

    1) Most times when i load web pages, most placeholders like image links, thumbs, even smaller icons etc simply dont load. All are blank. Reloading doesnt really help much, still many places are blank. Its a big annoyance seeing blank even after successive reloads.
when only the image resource is loaded, that single thing loads perfectly.
bloody flash objects, adds all load, images, thumbnails dont.

    2) Not a big annoyance, still some pages fail giving the error message,
'unable load could not connect'.. when i reload it problem is solved. Its annoyance at times to keep reloading.

Regard to first problem, I use a laptop, in it all pages load perfectly with IE. Also both IE,FF work perfect in a desktop(same connection). So it should not be a problem with the connection.

Also i tried in another user, another profile, a completely new profile all these with no extensions, the same problem persists there also. So its not because of extensions either.

info : options->contents-> all image settings are correct with no filters. javascript, java enabled.

I run windows XP (with all latest security).

Can anybody help.. its big big nuisance.

    Thanks in advance

  13. Book recommendations / Web Hosting Recommendations

Date: 01/11/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, css, java, web, hosting

I'm looking for some really good web design books. I've been spending some time at the bookstores lately looking through what they have, and there seem to be a lot of books out there, but I'm not sure which ones are good and which ones aren't. What I'm looking for are some in depth CSS, PHP, and Javascript books that are thorough and easy to understand. I'm also open to any other books you guys could suggest to help improve my skills. I can't afford to take classes right now, and I really learn best on my own so, I figured this would be a good way to go. Also, any good websites out there are fine too.

Now onto the second question.. and I'm sure it's been asked several times so, thanks for any responses.

I'm currently set up with web hosting through Aussiehosts. I've been there for about 3 years now, and when I first got set up I was really pleased with it. I pay about $38 a year for 200MB of disk space (which I'm currently using about 477MB). The company was recently bought out, and I have not been happy with it lately. Email is my biggest problem. Half the time I can't even login to my email, and then when I do I can't actually send any emails. I'm considering moving elsewhere, but I have NO IDEA what some good, affordable web hosts are. I found this one by way of a friend. I've been looking around at different companies, but they all seem to be kind of expensive. I'd like to stay somewhere near that price range, but I'd also like to have more disk space which means I'll need to pay more. So, any suggestions?

Thanks for all your help guys!

Date: 01/12/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: web, spam

I own a domain name and it seems to have been hyjacked by spammers. I've checked with the webhosters and they say that the mail relay is closed.
I am getting a lot of rejected emails from recipients receiving emails from spoofed addresses within my domain. I am concerned about my domain being blacklisted.

  15. W3C compliance

    Date: 01/12/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

I'm the webmaster for my local city government. Because it's a government site, we have to have something that's W3C complaint, or "handicap accessible," if you will. Right now there's a text-only version of the site. However, it's horribly out of date, and quite frankly, it's a pain in the ass. What'd love to be able to do is just modify the main site, cityoffrederick.com, to be complaint, and then can the text-only site.

I've done a lot of reading up on making websites w3c complaint (alt tags for images, good color contrast, etc.), but I guess I'm still not sure exactly what I'm getting into. The site doesn't have a lot of pictures, the design is really very basic, and I use Dreamweaver MX. The layout is done in tables, and I have no idea if that messes up accessiblity or not.

So, my question is, based on what I have to work with, does it make sense to go through and modify each page (there's hundreds of 'em), OR would that be SO much work (or so out of reach based on the current design) that I might as well revise the text-only site and keep that going? I don't mind a lot of "one-time" work to bring the main site up to speed if it means getting rid of the text-only. I guess I'm just not entirely sure whether that's possible with the curent layout and all the tables.

  16. Broadcast Help

Date: 01/13/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: rss, web

As a hugely important part of the group we currently run -- which you all may or may not know about -- I'm initiating a live-feed radio broadcast, which will be linked on our site, via RSS, and various other things. Out of all the options, I'd decided ages ago that Shoutcast was the best option... and so this morning, after our cable internet was finally hooked up and I'd gotten a decent broadcast mic, I downloaded the necessary items to get it running.

However, whether it's because my medication's making me brain-dead or because I'm just a doofus, I seem to be clueless about creating a server. Do I need to host it on my website... and if so, how can I do this? [Step-by-step would be nice... heh.] If not, am I missing something on the instructions? Is there a process I can follow?

And if these things are too complex or just a general pain in the ass, is there a better, free -- for now -- broadcasting utility, like Live365, that I can download and run for free, at least for the moment? We'd been trying to get this running by tonight, but argh, gotta love it.

    TIA, guys. ;)

[EDIT: Okay. I found the server download, and apparently it's running. *dramatic brow-wipe.* However, I'd still be EXTREMELY grateful for any help and advice -- more setup? How to create a "Listen" link from our site? How to run a broadcast live via mic? You pretty much get the idea. Thanks!]

  20. free calendar app that doesn't suck?

Date: 01/13/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: html, sql, java, web, yahoo, google

i'd like to add a calendar to my site. it doesn't need to be editable by visitors to the page, only by me.. but it does need to have functionality that would allow visitors to flip through different months and see what days i'm available. ideally it could also be colorcoded based on different categories (completely available, someone has requested me but nothing is confirmed, not at all available.)

i have come to ask the experts if you know a useful app for this purpose. i'm definitely not a true webdev person... i only know basic html and a little sql/javascript/etc. i googled, but most of the results were for calendars which remain on the site of the calendar's creator (e.g. calendar.yahoo.com) vs. ones which could integrate into my own site's design.

(to give you an idea of my preferences, some of my favorite web-based tools are flickr, allconsuming.net (and 43 things), dodgeball, yelp, etc.)

any advice would be greatly appreciated =]
