1. Remote Desktop \\tsclient\c is incredibly slow

Date: 01/13/06 (IT Professionals)    Keywords: virus, antivirus, web

I'd thought I'd ask around, my users are having problems with \\tsclient\c\whatever being very slow, I'm not sure whether its "by design" or I have interfering stuff like antivirus scans etc going on, suffice to say it can take 1 minute or more just to display the content from any folder.

is there anything I can do to speed this up? otherwise users are currently using outlook web access just to transfer files around.

  2. August Burns Red

Date: 01/13/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, mysql, html, database, sql, web

    Hey Guys

I'm new to this community. I am starting a web design company, and although I used to be decent at PHP, that was a couple of years ago and my knowledge is now pretty much non-existent. I need a script coded for a band website and I was wondering if some of you would give me a price estimate on it.

The script is for bands that want to add shows to their website. The script needs to do the following

    - Allow a user to add / edit / delete shows to their website. The shows will be in 2 categories (which will be 2 HTML tables) which are Upcoming shows, and past shows.
    - The user puts in information in a form and it's stored in a MySQL database. The most important information is displayed in an HTML table, and in the last cell of the table will have a link for more information. When a user clicks on this link it opens up a popup window and displays ALL the information of the show (eg. Date, time, venue, cost, directions, other notes yada yada yada) in another HTML table (within the pop-up window)

I realise that this is a pretty simple script (in comparison to what you guys have probably coded in the past, so I hope someone out there can code it for me at a reasonable price

    Thanks in advance

  3. Update / Seeking Guidance

Date: 01/14/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, html, web

Alright so in light of the responses with my previous post, I've decided to code this myself (I could really use the challenge and I've been meaning to get back into PHP for a while now anyways)

I've already got the code to add information to the datebase, now I'm working on displaying it. I have a question.

How can i have the HTML table add more rows to accomodate the added entry's in the "shows" section whenever the band chooses to add another show to their website? (so all the current shows are being displayed).

    Thanks

  4. A simple question compared to some of the ones on here.

Date: 01/14/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: browser, web

Novice Question here. All of the web pages I look at in my computers browsers (Internet Explorer and Mozzila Firefox) have always seemed too big when compared to other computers I’ve used. How does one shrink down all the pictures and graphics one is looking at, thus making the webpage look smaller. I can only change the size of the text at this point.

  5. icon associations / upload problems

Date: 01/15/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: software, web

After installing some software, I've somehow lost the icon associations for some graphic images. (jpg and gif, mainly) The icon is the windows white "square", with the bent corner and the windows "window" inside of it. (no, not the flying windows icon.) In a folders details view, all the extensions are intact, and by double clicking on them, the appropriate associated application launches. In Properties of the file, it says "Opens with unknown application", yet, as I said, double clicking does open it in the appropraie program.

Of course, Tools \ Folder Options\ File Types allows me to remedy this, but the icons for jpgs and gifs do not seem to be there for me to associate with the file types.

As a kicker, I've had some websites where I uploaded pictures to, bark at me when I attempt to upload a jpg or gif. I doubt these 2 are related, but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention it.

    XP, sp2.

    Any thoughts?
    !
    Thanks!

After a bunch of "RESTORE and "CHANGE ICON" clicks, it seems to have righted itself. Thanks!

  6. InfoPath 2003 VS Asp.Net

Date: 01/16/06 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: xml, asp, web

My boss has given me the task of looking into developing a web form that apparently needs to be read by other programs using an XML feed. He suggested using InfoPath 2003, but I then said "Well, ASp.Net would probably be able to do it too." But looking into InfoPath it looks like it may be a good tool for the job. Has anyone had any experience with Infopath, especially vs Asp.Net? I mean I'm not looking to do the most work possible, but also I dont' want to build it in 1 only to have to rebuild it in another to make sure that it can do everything we need it to do. So if anyone has any experience using these tools it'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  7. HP BIOS and motherboard issues.

Date: 01/17/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: web

It's time for me to reinstall XP. However, while Windows has no problem reading CDs, my BIOS (PhoenixBIOS 4.0 release 6.0.5) doesn't recognise the newer CD-ROM drive I've installed.

I could open up the box and put in the old CD drive just to for the reinstall, but I want to update the BIOS, as it's last been updated on 9/12/2000.

Here's the tricky bit. My computer, an ancient HP Pavilion XE783 does not have updated drivers available at either the HP site, the Phoenix site, nor the Asus site. Nor can I find updates anywhere else on the web. According to the HP site (link), my motherboard is a CUW-AM, however, this page for the Intel 810 (link) lists my desktop model as having that motherboard.

My question is: Can/should I find a BIOS update for the i810, and/or the MEW-AM motherboard (which I can't determine to be the same thing?)

    Thank you kindly.

  8. Language Choice

Date: 01/17/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, programming, mysql, database, sql, java, postgresql, web, apache

I need some advice in regard to which language to use for developing a dynamic website. My wife and I are thinking about creating a LMAO website, which will allow people to organize various LMAO projects. The website will allow users to register, log in, create projects, join projects, upload pictures, and so on. It's not terribly large project, but still pretty complicated for people who haven't done any web development and little programming in general.

The first problem is deciding upon a language to use. The site will, at least in the beginning, run on our server at home, which is FreeBSD running Apache2 (or anything else we want, to be honest. I'm not giving up FreeBSD, though!). It looks like all major languages in the field, including PERL, Ruby (and Ruby on Rails), Python, and PHP work well with Apache, so that shouldn't be a problem. For the database back-end, we'll be using PostgreSQL or MySQL (if we have to), both of which are widely supported as well.

My wife doesn't have much experience in programming, so for her it will be new experience one way or the other. I have some, but still little. The only language I'm familiar with and can actually write something useful in is Common Lisp. There exists mod_lisp and a couple of web development frameworks, TBNL and UnCommon Web, but the process seems hacky -- from what I can tell -- unless one uses a commercial CL implementations that cost a lot.

I've looked briefly at Python and Ruby, as well as asked for opinions from various groups of people (programmers who prefer Lisp, Ruby, or Python), but it's all still looks like mambo-jumbo to me. The only thing they agree on is that one should refrain from using PHP for anything non-trivial, so I'm inclined to believe that. As far as PERL is concerned, I've always had a distaste for it, so am not all that keen on using it.

Could anyone recommend one of these language, or perhaps another one, that would be suitable for our needs? I've pretty much made up my mind in regards to PHP and PERL, so I'm not looking for a debate about why they're good. I also wish to stay away from Windows-based and Java-based solutions.

  9. PHP layout/database question

Date: 01/17/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, css, html, database, web

I have a website, just a little personal project where I archive my writing. Over the years I have streamlined the code of this page as my knowledge of web design grows, so that it has gone from ugly frames to a smooth CSS-based design. However, this site has many identical pages (as far as layout is concerned, not content), and every time I significantly update the site layout, I always end up having to update each and every page manually. This is a pain.

So here is what I would like to do about this:

    1) Create a database of some sort, or maybe just a collection of .txt files, and when a user clicks on a link (say, to one of my poems), have PHP generate the page based on information parsed in the link. I have no idea if this is even possible.

    or

    2) Create one file containing all of the layout's HTML information, and have each page access it instead of having to hardcode such into each file. This file could also contain the CSS information if possible.

The trick to all this is that while I am a master of HTML/CSS design, I know next to nothing about PHP, beyond how to write the simplest of scripts and how to upload it to my domain. Is what I'm proposing even feasible, and if so, does anyone have any suggestions/advice/code/places to go for more information to help me make it work?

Thanks so much if you can help me, and apologies for being such a newbie pain!

  10. how do i not use the NOBR tag?

Date: 01/17/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: css, web

I am trying to rewrite this fairly simple web site to make it use DIVs instead of tables. The main page is basically about 10 very large images placed one after another, and the user has to scroll to the right to view them all. How would I use CSS to make it so every image is on the same line without using the NOBR tag? should each image be in its own div? do i use float: left?

  12. Writing Text File To the User Desktop

Date: 01/18/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: web

I've just begun researching how to write a text file to the user's desktop.

For reason's I can't understand, I have to be able to take the info contained in a web form and save it as a text file to the users desk (create an array, write a tab delinated file).

Later, I will have to allow the user to locate thsi file and re-populate the form with the data.

I'd appreciate any help and tips you have.

more: the user will click to save and select the location. And then find the file later. It's not automatic.

  13. SQL Server Question

Date: 01/18/06 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: xml, database, asp, web

I'm working on an ASP.Net page that will need to take information from a database, but the information needs to be multi-line, like a numbered list. How would I either store that or display that properly on the web page? Basically part of the output needs to look like this:

    Performance Objectives
    Participant will be able to:
    1. Explain the value of standardizing and institutionalizing performance management across all of X
    2. Describe the characteristics of a strong performance management culture
    3. Explain how to use the tools and processes that will enable differentiation
    4. Explain pay for performance and base salary administration

Any suggestions would be useful. I'm not sure how to integrate XML with this since this is so database driven. Thanks.

  16. A dynamic top ten downloads list?

Date: 01/18/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, web

    Hi everyone,

I'm working on a project that is a video archive, and my comrades would like the main archive page to feature a "top ten viewed" list that is dynamically up-to-date at any point in time. What I can't figure out is how to obtain the statistics that would deem the top downloaded video as the top one, 2nd as 2nd, etc. Is there a way I can parse our web stats via php to figure out which ones belong in the top ten? I view my stats using WebTrends, and it doesn't seem like there's any interface for that kind of activity (which I can't say I would expect, either).

Ok, I got the virtual hosts working. Now I'm wanting to set up a secure server. I've tried google and the apache website, and it's all seeming rather confusing and beyond what I need. I'm not worried about things like man in the middle attacks or anything like that, so certificates arn't needed. All I want to do is make a site encrypted, basicly https.

How do I go about doing this?

  19. major apache issues!

Date: 12/13/05 (Apache)    Keywords: virus, web, google, apache

Hello, I just joined this fine community...actually it's quite an amazing coincidence that I found it right when my Apache server is having terrible problems.
I haven't had problems with it up until recently, but lately it has just been really misbehaving on me! Normally I have one of my friends help me with it but he's really busy so hopefully someone here can be of service.

    Here it goes:

I got a new computer (an emachine with Windows xp Media Edition) a few months ago and ran Apache on it just perfectly. I was all set to start working on a new layout for my web page when something weird happened with Comcast: they actually kicked me offline for having a virus! I never knew comcast could do that...so I had to go to Best Buy where they swept my entire computer clean and reinstalled all the things the machine came with. Luckily I had back up files of most of my pics and such...but not of Apache of course.

So I had to re-install Apache from its website. This is around where the trouble started.
When I re-installed it, I followed the guidelines that my friend (who has always helped in the past) had written down for me in previous emails. I had saved the emails so that I could refer to them later in case of such things.
I installed Apache 2.0.55, or as the actual file is read: apache_2.0.55-win32-x86-no_ssl.msi to my desktop and then ran the file.
I typed in my information correctly (I even double and triple checked that!), and then continued to install...and Apache ran perfectly fine.

Then, of course, I had to go to the C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache2\conf file and modify the httpd.conf file. I copy and pasted what was in an email I received from my friend, which has always been correct in the past and which, previously, I have had NO problem with AT ALL.

However, when I restarted Apache, I got the following message: "The requested operation has failed!"
It hasn't started since then. *cries*

I have tried to do the following to remedy (and possibly understand) what is going on:

    1. I tested the Apache Server Configuration
when I did this, it said that there was an error on line 15 of the httpd.conf file. I checked line 15 and didn't see anything out of order, but I was also unsure of what I was looking for, so that didn't much help.

    2. I checked the Error Log File
when I did this, this message (among message that were not errors or problems) came up:
[Mon Dec 12 17:29:28 2005] [warn] (OS 995)The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request. : winnt_accept: Asynchronous AcceptEx failed.

What exactly does this mean? I had no clue...

    3. I searched for the words "Asynchronous AcceptEx" on google and came up with a few sites that I thought might explain what was going on, but mostly they were just a bunch of people talking about similar problems, rather than a solution to the problem.

Sooo...I still remain lost and need help!
If anyone knows anything about this or has suggestions please let me know. This has been going on for about a month now and I am not a person with money (being a college kid and all), so I can't just have my domain name sit here being unused.
    :(

Thanks to anyone who can help me!

  20. name based virtual hosts, suse

Date: 12/04/05 (Apache)    Keywords: php, html, web, yahoo, google, apache

I am beginning to work on multiple sites on my home test server and need to set up virtual hosts.

My server is running SuSE 10 with Apache 2, and is accessed by typing in "talon" in firefox's address bar.  I copied vhosts.template to site1.conf and edited it as follows:

Next I opened /etc/hosts and edited as follows:

    Then, rcrestart apache2.... ok.

And here is where I am stumped..  (and btw I googled the bit about /etc/hosts - i'm not sure if that's how it should be).    If I type in http://talon/site1 Apache says page can't be found.  If I try http://site1 page can't be found.    My site1 files exist in the DocumentRoot listed in the site1.conf file above.

I also read through apache's documentation on virtual hosts but the way they explained it didn't make as much sense to me.

Thanks for any and all help.. I've wanted to learn vhosts for some time now.
