1. Why won't cookies become enabled?

Date: 07/19/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: web

I'm really desperately wanting to buy a pair of boots from a website called schuh.co.uk but whenever I click to put the item in my basket it comes up with this message:

This happens on some websites and not on other when I've tried to buy stuff in the past. It also tends to happen on faceparty.com where it says I can't log in because I don't have cookies enabled, but it seems odd to me because at other times it works.

I use IE6 (corrected from original post) and have already gone to the privacy tab and selected the option to allow all cookies, so I'm really confused as to why it's still playing up! Obviously there's something wrong with my settings somewhere because it isn't restricted to just one site.

    Any ideas? :\

Date: 07/20/06 (Java Web)    Keywords: browser, web, google

I found a simple two step process to transparently circumvent any website access ban for non-password protected sites. 1. Install Google Web Accelerator. 2. Restart your browser. That’s it. Now enjoy any site that you want to browse, ban or no ban. Additionally you are likely to see some speedup on broadband connections. The catch: Now Google knows your [...]

  4. Controllin Form Submission

Date: 07/20/06 (HTML Help)    Keywords: html, web, google

    Hi everyone,

I'm new to this whole html thing and have been teaching myself the language for the last month or so. I've got a bit of an advanced question..or at least I think it's advanced since I can't find anything about it out there in google-land. My problem is that I have 2 drop down menus on my website. The second menu gets populated based on what the user selects from the first menu. When I make a selection from any of the drop down menus the ENTIRE page refreshes. I don't want this to happen...especially when the user makes a selection from the first menu and the second is populaed. I want the form to be submitted without refreshing the entire darn page. Is there a way that I can make this happen?

    Cheers,
    Meghan

Hello all. I'm using Firefox (version 1.0.5.4) and I'm really happy with it most of the time, but recently, it's been taking an extremely long time loading web pages on one site that I have a profile set up. All other pages on this site load fine, normal speed and all, but when I try to log in to my profile page, nothing happens or I get the "problem loading page" page that pops up. Is there some way to fix this?

  14. Laughably easy js problem

Date: 07/24/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: html, java, web

    Hello,

Can someone help me figure out some very basic javascript?

I have a page with a hide/reveal div to show samples of
    graphic work:
    http://www.beatcleaver.com/portfolio/print1.html
    The javascript is here:
    http://www.beatcleaver.com/portfolio/gallery.js

I am just starting baby steps in javascript and so don't know how to do the next thing I want to do:
on the web samples part of the site, I want the revealed div to also have links to other web sites. I tried doing this in the string that is passed into the revealed area, but I discovered you can't use certain symbols in strings (try not to laugh at me - I'm very new to this).
How would I go about adding text to the revealed area that linked to external urls?

    Thanks in advance!

  15. Suggestions for search engines?

    Date: 07/24/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

My company has been using a really awful, cheap search engine called Atomz, but our contract is about to expire and I'd like to find another search engine, mostly for finding articles on our website.

What are some suggestions and price quotes for search engines that need to sift through about 1,000 articles? Right now, you enter an exact title of an article and the search engine won't even pull it up...

    Thanks!

  16. Mail Function & HTTP Errors

Date: 07/25/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, web

I've discovered two things about using the PHP mail function on a page where there's an HTTP Error. First, I discovered that it's not allowed. By this I mean, the mail function just refuses to work when I put it on my error handling page (the objective here is for me, the webmaster, to get an email when somebody encountered an HTTP error). Why the mail function is disabled when there's an error, I haven't the slightest clue. There's nothing about it on php.net either.

Secondly, and more importantly, I discovered that there's a quick and easy way to overcome this quirk: simply place the mail code in another file and then include that file on your error-handling page. Works like a charm, and now I know when people are having problems with my site. For example, I discovered that bots were searching for (a non-existent) robots.txt and getting 404'd, potentially hurting my visibility to search engines, a problem I was able to quickly correct.

  17. HP ML 150 G1 and maxtor 147GB SCSI U320 10Krpm 80Pin Hot Plug HDD

Date: 07/25/06 (IT Professionals)    Keywords: html, web

    Any clues?
---my email to hp which didn't receive any good solutions ---

    ---
    i have is a
    HP ML150 XN2.8GHz 256MB
    36GB SCSI HDD +
    and 3 units of 72GB U320 10K HP ML150 HDD in a raid5 config

    and a Adaptec SCSI RAID 2010S ML150

the specs for this machine states
"Maximum Internal Storage 730 GB Internal drive cage maximum SCSI capacity (5 x 146 GB)"

I recently ordered a Maxtor 147GB SCSI U320 10Krpm 80Pin Hot Plug HDD , after plugging it in, it will not spin up at all. ie: at the point of power on, all harddisks lights should turn on, for this unit, it just blinks once and goes out.

I asked my vendor for help, they then contact hp enterprise support only to be told two part numbers that are discontinued.
    73 GB 10K Hot Swap Drive Ultra320 :344689-003 / 344689-001
    144 GB 10K Hot Swap Drive Ultra320 :344691-003 / 344691-001

-- alternative part numbers are suggested --
    289044-001 SPS-DRV,HD,146GB,U320,10K,HP
    404708-001 SPS-DRV,HD,146GB,U320,10K,HP
    377682-001 SPS-DRV,HD,146GB,U320,10K,HP
    347779-001 SPS-DRV,HD,146GB,U320,10K,HP

BUT none of these has any 100% guarantee of working, and the cost of it (eg: the first item 289044-001 is quoted at 3x the price of the maxtor harddrive I got. (sgd 3000 vs sgd 980) which is completely atrocious.

    I'd like some suggestions?
    a) is the problem with the raid card? ie: should I upgrade it, if so, do you have suggestions?
    b) is the problem that particular model of harddrive? should I change to another brand (quantum?)
    c) who is HP's harddisks' OEM, given the crazy pricing I'm being offered, I should try to get the OEM version instead.

    any other suggestions?

    --clueless HP helpdesk replied--

From your mail I understand that you are facing issue with the Maxtor 147GB SCSI U320 10Krpm 80Pin Hot Plug HDD configuration for the ProLiant ML150 server.

I need to share with you that in case if you are using third party hard drive then HP shall not be able to guarantee how the same will function, as HP have not tested the third party product with HP servers.

In this case I would suggest you to use the supported hard drives for ProLiant ML150 server. And in case if you face any issue with the HP supported part then HP will provide the technical support.

However in order to resolve this issue, I would suggest you to upgrade the driver of the array controller. Please download the latest available drivers for array/storage controller from the below mentioned web link:

  19. Web Hosting Reseller

Date: 07/26/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web, hosting

Recently, the small web host my company had been using for the past 3 years had a server crash and have never recovered (all my accounts are still down, 1 month later) and those files I was hosting are pretty much all lost with very little hope of ever getting them back, in addition to all the accounts we had setup for our clients.

Well here we are, a month later with all our client's files and ours over at Dreamhost. Which is a fantastic host.

However, we would like to find someone where we can get a reseller account through. We are mainly looking for the ability to set up quotas for bandwidth and space.
WIth our old host each client had cpanel access as well so they could do light admin work on their own accounts.

Anyone have any hosts that are like this?

For the record, we were with webspacedepot.net

    Thanks!

can anyone recommend a good php script or program that would be good for the following?:

i want to create a website that has a section for me to post recipes. the index page for the recipe sections, i want to be thumbnail's of a photo of each recipe (instead of just a text link - see FIGURE A). when you click the thumbnail, i want it to go to a page where i can put text and photos for the actual recipe page. i want to be able to categorize the recipes on the index page, so when i enter them, they appear in the correct section on the index page.. and only thumbnails for the most recent 4 or 5 recipes show on the index page. if you click on the "view more" button, or the category title, it takes you to another index type page with thumbnails of all of the recipes in that category (see FIGURE B).

    FIGURE A:

    FIGURE B:

i've worked a bit with customizing php (shopping carts), and i was wondering if anyone can point me in the direction to a good script or data entry program that might be able to help me to achieve this. i want to do it in php so i can easily update recipes, etc. i might eventually incorperate the same software/script to display crafts and projects.
