  • I was wondering...

Date: 07/14/06 (PHP Development)    Keywords: php, security, web

I was wondering, just how many people write PHP to be console based "applications"? I find myself more and more using the language with the #!/usr/bin/php at the top to make it an executable script. I've found some great uses, one of my projects in fact is a SHOUTcast Automatic DJ system, customizable and modular of course, but it needs to be purely console based for the simple fact that the person I'm writing it for and myself want security and don't care about a web interface for this as it's unnessicary and very bloating. He'll want a web interface later, but I figure that can be done once I lay out the "application" in console, yanno? Back to what I was posting here about, I wanted to know how many people are using PHP in the command line environment as handwritten "app" to be able to do something or another. Curiosity gets the best of me, and if the response is high, I'll go ahead and post my library of functions i've found, written myself, compiled, and edited for CLE usage for everyone else to enjoy and use as well.

  • In search for the app-dev solution.

Date: 07/14/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: technology, web, hosting

    Hi people,

General question here. Say, I am about to create a huge web application, with potentially many accounts, different ways to communicate for account owners, different ajax implementations, and moreover, lots of smart algorithms, which will operate on the back-end and do different magical crap. Think okCupid sort of thing, with better design. (No, I'm not making online dating, but okCupid is the closest I've seen).

    five important thingies:
    1) Expandability (different features/modules should be addable without much pain)
    2) Complete control over design (no pre-made stuff unless absolutely customizable)
    3) Clear separation between designer and programmer. (well, as much as it's possible)
    4) Quick development/good community
    5) Fast-working result

five unimportant thingies (really, I don't care about them):
    1) the difficulty of deploying the product to hostings
    2) high price of hosting to support the technologies
    3) lack of hostings that support technology
    4) learning curve
    5) that's it

Seems like my lists lean towards Ruby on Rails, but I'm afraid about its customizability (the designes of sites I saw made on Ruby sorta sucked). Also, the okCupid is made on C++. When I found that out, I thought "whoa". Then I thought, maybe it's a good thing, when you have to program lots of algorithms. Some say that J2EE is good for these things. People also argue about OO vs. view-centric approach. Help with your ideas please.

  • Database Binary Conversion

Date: 07/17/06 (C Sharp)    Keywords: database, web

Hello, long time lurker, first time poster here. :)

I'm currently working with your typical sandbox Northwind Database and C# .NET. I have set up a Datagrid class to spit out the contents of a certain table in the database (Employees). However, one of the fields in the database, "Photo", currently takes a Binary representation of an image.

My goal is to take the binary and convert it into a relevant image for display on a website, all in a Datagrid control.

Would anybody know of a way to go about doing this, or at least point me in the right direction?

    Thanks!

  • Film Noire in Web Design

Date: 07/18/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, css, html, web

I am looking for some help and inspiration.

I have a client who wants a "film noire" web site. I know what film noire is and the basic style of it but am having a hard time capturing that for the web.

Are there any sites done in a film noire style I could peek at to get a sense of the overall look and feel? Anyone ever done something like this before and have some pointers?

I am looking to build in xhtml, css and php. No flash other than perhaps SIFR or a related method for headings.

Any help would be much appreciated. :-)

    Thanks in advance!

    4. NVU Users

Date: 07/13/06 (Javascript Community)    Keywords: html, java, web

I posted a few weeks back and someone recommended a WYSIWYG program called NVU, which has proven itself impecable.

I have a question about uploading straight to FTP or what not.

That's what the program looks like, and right there is uploading that html file, but to the side you see all those .jpg files?

I've noticed it uploads all these pictures too, when the code i have is linking the images from a photobucket account.
      . . .How to explain. . .

Is there a way to stop this program from uploading all these huge picture files that are stored elsewhere?
(When you go to the site...the pictures are being linked from the photobucket account...so, why are they being stored in the website's host space?)

      Can i delete them?
It's slightly frustrating because each picture is about 1 MB big, it's taking up space (which could be used otherwise), and time to upload these pictures .-.

      Help please?
I know this is not Javascript per say, but since someone here recommended the program, i was hoping to find an answer.:)

      Thanks~

BTW, this is what the written code looks like:
