ethernet card troubles
Date: 11/03/06
Keywords: no keywords
I've been using my ethernet card on Windows XP for months with no problems, except that I have to remove it and re-insert it every time I restart, so the computer will recognize it. The other day I restarted it, pulled it out and stuck it back in as usual, and instead of recognizing it properly, my computer says, "NEW HARDWARE DETECTED."
Since I can't get the internet without the card, it can't find the proper drivers over the internet. So, I put in my disc that came with the card which has all the drivers on it. The computer said that it could not find the drivers on the disc.
So... what in the world do I do? Thank you!

DL help

Just recently, my school ended up blocking all ports instead of some of them for the usual p2p apps. but now torrents don't even work. Do any of you know any other way to get movie downloads (get past the blocking of ports?) When torrents used to work, I kept azureus on port 80. Any alternate routes of DL movies besides torrents or p2p apps like limewire?
advanced thanks to any replies.

Please Help!
Date: 11/03/06
Keywords: software, spyware, microsoft
My dell laptop is fairly new (got in in July 06) and it started causes problems from the start without even getting on the Internet. A whole range, I could tell you them but that would take forever my main two problems:
My system/computer is deleting some stuff of mine (i.e music, word documents) (started about a month ago) I deleted that user account after all my fles got delted, it started after I did this LogMien thing with someone to detect my cd drive problem. This user account deletes and moves some of my files but I am saving them not such a big problem. Anyone know any good place to save files? I currently use GMail and eSnips.
My optical/CD drive is not being detected (Started about two months ago)
I heard the best thing to do is to some how save my files and then reinstall my Windows XP (the system or program I have) My main two questions are:
Does reinstalling Windows XP fix the optical drive?
Can I reinstall Windows XP using the WINNT32, since my CD drive is not being detected?
I cannot take it in so please don't say that as an option, any help please?
What is C:\WINDOWS\system32\fxscom.dll do I need that? It says it is missing in my Abexo
Also my internet has been not working well and very slow and sometimes I can get on, and sometimes I can't
And my computer space has been going down what could cause this?
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP, Home Edition Version 2002, Service Pack 2
Computer: Dell Inspiron 6400
Memory: (c drive): 450MB (it was 4.65GB yesterday)
Broswer: FireFox 1.5 and Mozilla 1.7
What is the processor speed of your CPU?
Have you recently installed or uninstalled any software or hardware? If so, what?
A lot to save space:
(uninstalled)
Adobe Photoshop Elements
Yahtzee
MicroSoft ActiveX Control Pad (and installed)
(installed)
StartUp
ArtTray
NoteTab Light
4Tray (and uninstalled
Mozilla Thunderbird
Anti-Malware programs:
Ad Adware SE Personal
Spybot S&D
AVG
Abexo
CCleaner
AdvancedWindowsCare V2 Personal
SUPERAntiSpyware
Spyware Blaster
Some links I checked out:
WIndows Install
Windows Reinstall Two
Should that be okay?

language problem in XP
Date: 11/02/06
Keywords: ebay
So I just bought a computer on ebay and want to enable Arabic and Hebrew on it. It has Windows XP (which theoretically comes with tons of languages), but these languages weren’t installed and the computer didn't come with the operating system CD for me to get the necessary files from (I know, I know, it was dumb to buy the machine without the CD). To clarify: I already tried going to “change language and regional options” in the control panel and selecting "Install files for complex and right-to-left languages (Including Thai)", and got a message that I needed to insert the XP CD. I also searched the Windows Update site and didn’t find anything useful (though maybe just didn’t have a good enough idea of what to search for). Given the current situation, any ideas for how can I get the files necessary to enable right-to-left text/Arabic/Hebrew without having to borrow someone else's XP CD? Thanks for your help!

The file-extension for both text and animated files says .rar and I'm all kinds of confusicated.
Is there a kindly soul who can walk me through what I need to download (preferably free) and then what to do to get my computer to recognize these mysterious files?
I've got Windows XP.
Thank you muchly in advance.

possible explorer or connections problems
Date: 11/01/06
Keywords: browser, web
Posting it here because it starts to get fucking irritating.
First some stats about my PC
Fujitsu Siemens Computer
Intel Pentium 4 CPU
3.06 GHz
1,00 GB RAM
Window XP
Fritz Box SL
AOL DSL
1.) Fist of all, I still do have the problem that sometimes the host adresses get fucked up. I tried to manage that with someone from that community using hijackthis, we found the source, I deleted it and it worked again. I did that everytime the problem showed up and at some point it stopped working. Now I have to restart my PC every time when I wnat to it be working again (i.e. ebing able to visit webpages without the adresse sgetting fcuked up)
2.) Sometimes it works for the first 5 to 10 minutes after I started my PC, and then I can't open any website anymore, or rather, my PC acts as if I had no connection, but I have, actually. Also AIM and ever yother messenger still does work fine, just the websites won't open anymore. To get it fixed, I have to restart my PC. But isn't there any other way?
3.) Probably I do have a week connection or something (which shouldn't be since I own DSL wtf), but rather often when I want to visit a website firefox (and the aol browser, just tested it) shows me the usual thing, timeout, you know. What to do? It's extremely bothersome.
Help, anyone?

My computer hates me
Date: 10/22/06
Keywords: security, microsoft
(This was cross-posted to a few places and is still unsolved.)
I'm trying to play a MMORPG that attempts to download and install DirectX before it's playable, and I've been getting that error where DirectX fails to pass Windows Logo testing, and I have tried several things that're posted on the Internet (renaming catroot2, checking to make sure that Cryptographic Services is enabled/started, etc.).
My computer says that I have DirectX installed already, but the game still prompts me to download/install it, and it still doesn't pass Logo testing.
I've also found that Windows Update, whether I initiate it from Microsoft.com or from the Security Center, will not update. I have 33 updates to download, and 1 succeeds no matter how many times I try.
For both the DirectX problem and the Update problem, I have tried everything I could from this article, with no luck.
I'd also like to note that Internet Explorer's installation also gives me this error: "Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf."

Help Meeeee!!!!
Date: 10/21/06

Argh! My brand new laptop (I bought it about 2-3 months ago) is not working!!! Its an HP Pavillion and Im freaking out because I have two papers on there that are due monday and tuesday. Needless to say Im taking it to get looked at first thing tomorrow morning but I wanted to ask for advice on here to see if I can do something about it without having to pay for it to be fixed if its just something stupid.
Ok so heres the situation. I was playing a PC Game (Army Men, Sarge's War) when my battery goes dead and my laptop goes into hibernation mode. Ok, no problem, its happened before. So I get out my power cord and plug it in and then I press the power button. I get a screen that asks me what mode I would like to start windows in. I select "Start windows normally" mode. It starts to load fine and then just before the desktop would load a blue screen pops up with lots of writing and then quickly disappears and the computer retarts with the screen asking me which mode I want to start with again. I've tried everything. Restarting, Unplugging, opening with safe mode, you name it. I cannot figure out what is wrong with it! I just keep getting the blue screen and then it tries to restart again.
Please tell me this isn't a fatal computer function. :( I really need my stuff back :*(
Anna
*EDIT* Im home on fall break from college so all my instruction manuals/1-800 numbers/re-install disks are at school so I dont have access to them right now.

Wireless Cards

Keywords: no keywords
Is it possible to install a wireless network card into a PC? I'd rather not be connected by LAN to my modem, so that I can have my PC in a different spot in the house.
If it is possible, can anyone suggest a reputable card for me to buy?
..and a place for installation instructions? >_o
Thanks!!

Device Manager Issues
Date: 10/20/06
Keywords: no keywords
In trying to upgrade the drivers for my new graphics card, I can not seem to access anything in the Device Manager. I right-click My Computer, click Properties, click the Hardware tab, click Device Manager. The Device Manager window opens up, but the window is not populated with any devices. None. Toolbar and titlebar are there. But just a blank white space where my devices should be listed.
This issue just started this week, before installing the new graphics card.
Any thoughts?

How do I get the "open file" prompt box after downloading?
Date: 10/19/06
Keywords: no keywords
Okay, so this may sound like a dumb question, but I can’t seem to find the answer using the XP help menu. I have windows XP and I would like to be able to have the option of opening a file as soon as I download it. On every computer I have ever owned as soon as I download a file another box will open up asking me if I want to open the newly saved file. I have a new computer and for some reason this prompt never comes up. So after I download a file I have to go into my documents, find the file, and then open it that way. How do I change my preferences/settings to make this work? Thank you so much in advance for your help!

Hoping someone can help

I'm using a Compaq Presario S4220NX PC with Windows XP.
So today my computer was having some issues so after a few things I decided to load up the recovery console and try the Non-destructive system Recovery. Well after I finally get the computer to load up, I can't seem to find any of my personal files that were under my user name. Anything that was saved directly in the C drive is still there (program files, etc.) but most everything was saved in my documents and in various folders on my desktop. The strange part however, is that the hard drive space for all of those things is still being occupied. 80+ gigs. I did a seach for specific files, a more broad search for mp3s and got nothing each time. I talked to a tech support person from Compaq in an online chat and we went in circles. She told me that the non-destructive system restore deletes files that are in my documents and on the desktop of user accounts, however, she couldn't give me any reason why that space is still occupied, so it is my own thought (and hope...god I hope) that these files are still somewhere in my computer. It certainly didn't take long enough that it could have deleted all of those files, in my opinion. Does anybody have any ideas. It would make my day if I could recover those files.
If any additional information is needed don't hesitate to ask....also my next step at this point would be to just take it to a local best buy or somewhere similar where I can get it looked at and talk face to face with someone. Even if the files are actually gone, there's still the problem of 80+gigs of phantom space being used. Thank you in advance for any and all help.
Mike
