  2. all men condemned by men to die

Date: 10/16/06     Keywords: software, virus, microsoft

There are no stupid questions, only stupid people.

My mother runs an older PC. Windows ME, small memory, etc. It’s what you would have expected to get by default six or seven years ago, from big box retailer. I don’t really remember all the specifics of it, and the majority of the paperwork is misplaced.

Despite having to reformat the hard-drive four times over six years, the PC’s been working fine for the last two and a half. Now, the machine reboots on shutdown and has a box that pops up prior to downloading the desktop asking for a password (you can bypass the box by clicking escape).

I reinstalled all her drivers and checked her hard drive for errors, but there was nothing. It’s also virus and spy-ware clean (there’s a possibility I’ve missed some, always). We recently installed DSL. She only uses the Internet, Microsoft Outlook, Firefox, the calculator, and the system tools (like scan disk and disk defrag). She also has software for her camera (so she can format pictures and send then over email), but she doesn’t edit her photos besides reducing them in size.

I’m not against reformatting her hard drive once again, although I’d rather not unless there’s no other way.

Buying a new/used PC isn’t an option. Nor is upgrading to Windows XP (she doesn’t have the memory to support it and I have a feeling that within the next two years, it’ll be completely overtaken by Vista).

Any solution or advice is really welcome. My computer-fu isn’t what it used to be and I really do want to fix it for her.

  3. System fonts going crazy

    Date: 10/15/06     Keywords: no keywords

I have a neat collection of fonts on my laptop and wanted to transfer them to my PC. As you can't replace the font order or delete its content and I was too lazy picking out the fonts I already had, I just copied them all, dragged them to the PC-font-folder and skipped every time Windows told me that this font had been already installed. I didn't delete or overwrite any of the original fonts I had, though.

Now, after I did this my laziness was punished with the following problem that occurs to me in some of my windows. For example the AntiVir updater.

Other examples are the saving window of Photoshop and the Flickr-uploader, which is usually a small window but now is bloated up to full screen size (screenshot is shrunk to a manageable size).

    Thanks for any help!

  4. Vizard/Graphics Card

    Date: 10/14/06     Keywords: programming, software

I have been offered work on programming the Python half of a motion capture project using World Viz's Vizard software. I downloaded a trial copy of the software until my employer gets me a license for the full version. As I am running through the tutorial, my processor runs between 0% and 4% usage. As soon as I run the script, though, my processor seems to get bogged down by the 3D graphics and maxes out at 100%. My frame rate is under 5fps, sometimes dropping even below 1fps! In wireframe mode I can get it up to about 15 or 20fps.

I run Windows XP Home on a MSI K8N Neo Platinum motherboard, AMD Athlon 64 3000+ processor, 1GB of DDR333 clocking at 166Mhz(?), and my graphics card is an older Radeon 7500 64MDDR.

Would upgrading my video card take some (or all) of this load off of my processor and allow me to move freely through my 3D environment?

If so, can somebody suggest a good graphics card for gaming/development? My only requirement used to be dual-display support, but now with programming/3D modelling I realize I'm going to need a bigger punch.

    Any help appreciated.

  5. looking for a computer / TV desk (all in one)

    Date: 10/11/06     Keywords: no keywords

I realize this is probably a dumb question .. but I wanted to know, do they even make desks specially for your computer AND tv?

what I mean is, not just a regular desk you would put your computer and TV on. I mean a desk that is a TV stand and a computer desk combined into one .. sounds odd, I know, but i've been looking for something like that and I can't seem to find anything.

Here is just a simple mock-up of what i'm looking for (I made it in ms paint, so it sucks, but oh well, it's just a general idea of what i'm looking for.)

This is what is going on now. On this laptop we are able to get online and browse via dial up and when we connect the dsl line directly to the laptop. We cannont browse using the wireless, we even tried connecting to wireless router of a different brand at another location. This is what happens. We are able to actually connect,(it says we are connected and signal strenght etc) we cannot browse or run anything else that need a connection. So any ideas? Thanks!
Oh its a Compaq Presario V2552US

    Original post:
I reformatted my laptop a few days ago, its a low end compaq presario..
I've never had trouble connecting to my wireless network.
I input all the IP adresses and such, and it shows that its connected, I also pinged the router, and it had a response. So, as far as communication between the router and computer it was..
But if i try and run any internet application,Internet Explorer, Itunes.. It doesn't function.
I also notice that in the Network Connections folder of other computer on the network, a icon titled "internet gateway" is displayed, where as on my laptop, it isn't
I am really at a loss as to what to do
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

  7. Netscape keeps getting "illegal operation" messages when I try to update my blog

    Date: 10/03/06     Keywords: browser

Every time I click "Update Journal," the page loads partway, the ads start to load, and then either I get an "illegal operation" message or--this drives me crazy--the browser just closes by itself. The "illegal operations" just happened three times in a row. Right now I'm in IE. I just updated Netscape to 8.1.2, and I'm wondering if that might have had something to do with it?

(Also, sometimes Netscape will close automatically, with no warning, no matter what I'm doing.)

EDIT: I found out that I can fix this problem by going to Tools > Options > Site Controls > Click "Internet Explorer" button under Rendering Engine.

  9. Firefox keyboard shortcut problem

    Date: 10/01/06     Keywords: no keywords

When I'm using firefox and I'm typing something (on forums, or a LJ reply or whatever) sometimes when I hit the apostrophe key it brings up the FIND box at the bottom of the screen. Then whatever I'm typing goes into the find box. So I click back on whatever I was typing before, and try to finish my abreviation, only to get the damn find box again.

Looking at the keyboard shortcuts, it says this about the wonderful ' key: "Find As You Type Link"

    Huh?

Find as I type a link? What the hell does that mean? I certainly wasn't typing a URL link.. and I wasn't talking about any of the Zelda adventures or anything! :)

If I knew what I was accidently doing to trigger this, I could presumably undo it.

  10. Monitor turns itself off

    Date: 10/01/06     Keywords: virus, spyware

Hey. Lately I've been having this issue with my computer. In the middle of doing something my monitor will turn off by itself. It doesn't come back on by clicking on the mouse or pressing a button or anything. To make matters worse, pressing the power button does nothing, the computer will not turn off. I have to actually reach in the back of the computer, unplug the power chord and then plug it back in, and turn my computer back on. That's the only way I can restart my computer in this situation.

At first I thought maybe I just was low on diskspace (because I download a lot) or something so I deleted some junk I didn't need. That hasn't seemed to do anything. Ran some virus-scans and spyware checkers. Nothing. So what is this? A RAM issue? A power supply issue? Maybe I need to open up my tower and clean off some dust? Is there something I should check. Hopefully I can resolve this issue without spending money or reinstalling windows.

Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for any advice you can offer. If there's any info you need to help you understand my problem ask and I'll try to supply it.

  11. Wireless Woes

    Date: 10/01/06     Keywords: google

I have a Gateway laptop with Windows XP. One day, the wireless in our apt. was working fine, but it "flickered" out for a second, and then my computer refused to reconnect to it. My roomate's went back on no problem, but mine, nope.

It can see the wireless, but it refuses to connect to ours, saying it cannot acquire a network address. Now, here's the weird part. I can connect to anyone else's, aka all the unsecured wireless within good range in our building, it finds those no problem and lets me connect, and I went home this weekend and it connected right up with no problems to my dad's wireless.

I am computer illiterate, so any suggestions need to be said in layman's terms, please. I'm thinking it has something to do with the IP addresses, but i'm not quite sure where this problem lies and have NO clue how to fix it. I've googled it, and there's plenty of solutions, but I have no clue how to even start! Help!

  14. problem removing dialer - ias860.dll

Date: 09/26/06     Keywords: security, virus, yahoo

I am running Windows XP home.

Ok, I don't know I got this, but I can't remove it. I've virus scanned 3 times (I am up to date), used spybot search & destroy (but it found nothing, even while updated), and used hijackthis to delete it, but everytime I do, it just keeps coming back. The virus scanner (I use AVG) found some of the virus but it didn't remove it all, despite me scanning more then once.

I went to the registry and deleted all references to ias860.dll, and all it's keys, but it seems to magically reappear on startup.

I also tried deleting the file, ias860.dll, but it won't let me. It's not in my process list and it only shows up in my startup list when I use spybot's 'system startup' tool (msconfig doesn't show it.) It's not read-only .. I also rebooted in safe mode and tried to delete the file, it still wouldn't let me. Also in spybot, there is a tool to remove BHO's. The BHO is there, it references to a place in the registry. I tried to delete the key in spybot, it removes it but it doesn't matter since it .. just keeps coming back.

I can use spybot to delete the file, but it just keeps coming back. In spybot, this is the startup info:

  15. Audio driver won't install

    Date: 09/24/06     Keywords: software

I recently formatted my harddisk and reinstalled Windows on my PC. Everything is running just fine, only the audio driver is giving me headaches.

The device manager tells me the "audioncontroller for multimedia" is missing. I have a SiS 7012 audio device and got drivers for it without a problem from the 'net. I tried three different sources, beginning of course with sis.com, but it just won't install. Windows tells me it doesn't find the correct software and when I install it manually from the file, the setup is interrupted by two failure messages:

"-536870397" and then "Fail to install audio driver for Windows XP. Setup will exit."

I already surfed around for answers and got told to install the chipset drivers for my motherboard first. They worked like a charm. But the audiodriver still won't install. Anyone got any ideas?

    *cross-posted*

So I'm trying to reinstall iTunes and I'm having a lot of problems with it.

All the support sites for the software point back to eachother. Here's what the error message is that I'm getting.

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v74/enflamedphoenix/1.png

So I googled that and saw that it's an issue with installshield. So I go to the installshield site at http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q110641 and see how to fix the problem. So I go to the place where you fix the problem and follow the instructions at http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108322.

Ironically enough, that causes the original error again. After the first error in iTunes shows up, I get this error: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v74/enflamedphoenix/2.png

I've uninstalled iTunes and Quicktime. I've used spybot and adaware and antivir to check for spyware or viruses. I've registered files per the installshield website. I've used Windows Installer to delete any quicktime or itunes installer files. I just can't seem to get it to work. I don't know what else to do. I would like to be able to use my ipod haha

If anyone has any advice for me to try?

  17. Using the Firefox search bar

    Date: 09/23/06     Keywords: java

Okay, gang. You know that search bar feature in Firefox?

How do I use it? I type something in and hit "Enter," and nothing happens. I click on "Add Engines" as shown above, and it takes me to this page, where I can choose some search engines to add to that bar. But when I click them, nothing happens. Let's say I want to add the Wikipedia engine. I click on it, and this thing pops up:

I click "OK," and that little java alert disappears, but then I'm back where I started. The search bar doesn't do anything, and when I click it, it just asks me to add some engines.

So, uh . . . what am I doing wrong?

    Here's the deal.
My computer won't download Flash 9.0
    It just won't.

I went to troubleshooting on the Adobe website. Went up to internet options making sure nothing was blocked. I downloaded the uninstaller, then re-installed it. I've rebooted many many times.

The same thing happened with the previous version of Flash. About 3 or 4 months after that one finally started working (only God knows why) the whole world decides that this Flash isn't good enough. It just has to be 9.0 now.

So please please PLEASE. I am dying. Is there anything else I need to do? Is my computer just screwed up? Am I overlooking something incredibly simple?

  20. Wallpaper

    Date: 09/20/06     Keywords: virus

I had a wallpaper on my computer and I got some type of virus that made it turn black. I did a million virus scans and a bunch of recovery system scans and I was finally able to change the color of my background so now it's purple. I tried going to control panel, then display and wallpaper, and all the options are colored gray so I can't click on them. My task manger, I also noticed, has been 'disabled by the administrator'. Does anybody know how to get my wallpaper option back along with the task manager? I also tried right clicking on a picture online and then setting it as my wallpaper for my desktop, and nothing happens.
