Win98 PC slows network down.
Date: 09/16/06
Keywords: no keywords
Okay, so we have 3 PCs on our network, two running WinXP (one Home, one Pro) and one running Windows 98. When only the two XP PCs are on, the network performs well. When the Win98 PC is switched on, the network drags horribly. Everything runs into a Linksys EtherFast router.
It's been a long, long time since I've done networking on a Win98 machine, and I'm not even sure where to start looking. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Can't connect to internet
Date: 09/16/06
Keywords: web, google
I can't connect to any websites on my backup desktop anymore. It seems to have suddenly stopped, and I'm not sure why. It worked a few hours ago.. and now, nothing.
I think it has to do with some windows updates that I ran on it, because after they installed is when I had the problem. Afterwards, I can no longer connect to anything. I tried firefox and IE, and I tried to ping google.com but got nothing.
There are no device conflicts with the netcard.
I tried to uninstall the windows updates and my desktop started to look a bit funky.. I may have uninstalled the wrong ones. :) The desktop icons were all pink and weird looking.. I tried to backup to yesterday's system restore, but that didn't get me back on the net.
After an hour or so of messing with system restore and testing the LAN cable on my laptop (it connected fine).. I figured.. what the hell, I don't have anything on this computer anyways.. and reinstalled windows and downloaded the latest drivers for the net card (which I had to do from my laptop and transfer them via flash drive).
That didn't work either.
I've tried running the LAN cable straight from the modem to the computer rather than through the router, and that didn't work.
I shut off the computer / router / cable modem, and turned them back on in reverse order.. nothing.
I don't understand why reinstalling windows didn't work if it truely was the windows update that did it. But if it wasn't the update, what was it? I've tried three different known working LAN cables, so it's not the cable.. and I bypassed the router, so I don't see how it could be the router. And I'm sending this message via my laptop on the same network, so it shouldn't be the cable modem's fault. If it's the NIC, then the updated drivers should have done something.. or it should be giving me some sort of conflict.
Under the network connections/local area connection status it says connected. When I click repair it says: "The following steps of the repair operation failed: renewing the IP address."
So.. any ideas? :)

un-installable software ..

I just got a new comp a couple of days ago. It's a dell dimention 4400, running windows XP home.
Everything is fine, except for the fact that when I looked in the add/remove programs box, NOTHING that was installed was there. There are a bunch of programs that it came with that do not have a uninstaller and arent in the list .. how the heck do I uninstall them?
here's the picure of the ones I want to install (some were blurred out because I don't want to uninstall them.)
--> http://i1.sell.com/0/121/46531/40/146/2631236-m.jpg
NONE of those programs appear in the add/remove window. There doesn't seem to be a way to remove them. And, I know deleting them would just leave bits and pieces everywhere, and I don't want that.
I find it odd a new comp would have this problem .. I hardly did anything to it besides set up the internet so I can post this problem.
Suggestions/thoughts/help would be appreciated.

My printer is being a whore.
HP photosmart 2710 all in one, scanner, fax, printer deal. I only use the scanner and printer.
I used to use the feature where you could put a memory card into the appropriate slot and it would transfer to the computer.
about a month ago that feature ceased to work. I put the card in the printer and the printer recognized that there were pictures on it but wouldn't let me transfer them to the computer.
Starting HP director and trying to transfer images via memory card doesnt work either. it insists that there is "no memory card in the image device" when the most definately is
:/
tonight I reinstalled everything...and still... the problem persists. I can still transfer images using the cord that came with my camera....but...that's kind of a pain.
any help would be utterly fantastic.

Mozilla Firefox - transfering bookmarks
Date: 09/06/06
Keywords: browser
Hi, I use Mozilla Firefox as a browser.
I moved to a new place, and all of my 'bookmarks' are in that computer.
Is there a way for me to get my bookmarks?
In Internet Explorer, you can find the 'favorites' folder and all of the bookmarks will show up as Internet shortcut icons; and you can right-click and copy them. I wonder if there is a similar option for Mozilla Firefox.

would anyone know why this is happening?
Date: 09/05/06
Keywords: virus, web, spyware
Ok.
I offically CAN'T take it anymore. I've tried to deal with it, it just keeps getting worse.
It's been happening more and more, when i'm trying to do normal, simple things online, like checking email, typing emails, surfing websites. Before, it only shut off while virus scanning and spyware checking, but it seems to happen more and more for what seems for no reason.
What is it doing?
It CONSTANTLY keeps shutting itself off. And when it does, just pressing the on/off switch doesn't work, you need to go to the outlet and switch the plugs for the computer and the monitor into different sockets, and then it will turn back on when you press the button. I have to do this sometimes 2 or 3 times before it powers back on. Sometimes I give it time to rest, but I can't always do that when I have important things to do on it.
I have a 8-year old HP pavillion #6630. It's running windows 98 SE, and has 64mbs of RAM (it came with that much.) Usually it runs fine, but this has been happening more and more and really annoying me. I've opened the computer to suck dust out of the insides, my dad and I had to buy a new fan and install it because my dad thought it could be overheating .. and I even removed the power strip w/ mulitple sockets on it because I thought it was causing the problem. It wasn't, because even after I removed it, it still kept happening.
Also, one time, I thought reformatting would work. Even after reformatting, it still happened, so that makes me think it could be something internal rather then with the harddrive itself.
I can't virus scan, it shuts off before it finshes the scan. I also can't use spybot to scan for spyware, that makes it shut off too.
I don't have any unnessary or unknown programs running at startup, and I try not to have too much stuff open at one time to save memory .. but i'm a multi-tasker, so sometimes that's hard.
When i'm doing something small or the computer is left alone and is just idle, it's fine. It only seems to happen when i'm doing something important .. you know, typing up a big document (i've learned the art of saving VERY often), creating graphics in PSP, chatting, or surfing. Sometimes i'll merely click on a link, and -- kaboom. No warning message, it's just as if someone pulled the plug. Then I have to get up and try 2~3 times to get it to turn on again. It's really fustrating, since i've tried basically everything to fix it.
Yes, I KNOW I need a new computer right now .. but i'm a college student and cannot afford it, (this is my only computer) so i'm trying to do the best with what I have.
I don't know what it could be .. a bad power supply? even since I moved to a new place, it kept happening, so it's not with the main wall power supply .. I tried replacing the fan (I bought a new one and my dad installed it), and it seemed to be working fine, but either it stops or just doesn't work right anymore .. or memory? even though the computer has a low amount of memory compared to most computers, i've never had that problem before. I used to be able to open about 10 IE windows without a problem, and I used to be able to use spybot before too.
I think it's a over heating problem though .. it only seems to be when i'm doing something very intensive, which would make it overheat alot faster, I think.
Anyways, does anyone have any suggestions to fix it? I really need help, since I use this computer for school .. I can't keep having it shut off on me ;(

Ok, I got more disk space and got rid of a few problems. except one. i still can't get my desktop wallpaper to work. I got rid of the spysherriff that was on here. I deleted the winstall.exe like this article told me to..but the problem is, i don't have the active desktop registry keys. i think this might be a good thing. i dunno.
well, i did get rid of the blue screen with the warning on it. now it's white. i can't get a pic to go on there. i can see a wallpaper pic when i pretty ctrl+alt+delte, and log on and off of windows. but i just can't get it to work on my desktop.
here's a thumbnail of what i have going on now. as you can see, i cannot edit my wallpaper settings. i can only choose a background color.
I also enabled customizing stuff. so now i'm pink and whatever. i couldn't do that before. but i just can't get this damn wallpaper problem out of the way.
i'd appreciate your guys' help. thanks :D

DVD question
Date: 09/04/06
Keywords: no keywords
A few days ago, I put a clean, unscratched DVD into my computer and besides the menus not showing up/it taking forever for a title to start playing after I'd clicked it, it played fine. I just took the disk out of my computer (I'd left it on pause for a few days - is that bad?), and it's all scratched on one part. I don't want to risk damaging any of my other DVDs so I haven't tried any, but this has never happened before.
Any ideas on what might have caused this/how I can fix it?
Thanks. :)

buying recommendation
Date: 09/03/06
Keywords: web
my nephew is planning on getting a laptop. he just needs something for WiFi, web design, file sharing, school, playing music and movies, nothing fancy
i gave him my recommendations, but I figured I would get your opinions. he wants an Alienware, but that's ridiculous and not necessary. he lives in LA-LA land and i know he's worried about status and what the other kiddies would think, but my wife and I told his parents that that crap isn't necessary, and Alienware is basically an overpriced Dell. he sent me an ad for an Area-51 m5550 Alienware, he doesn't need it. so, what would you recommend in place? he's a junior in HS and will hopefully be going away to college in a few years.
i told him to go for a 1.6GHz with 512MB RAM, Windows Office(unfortunately, but because it's necessary in today's educational world, but hopefully he'll be able to get it off someone without shelling out the dough), a long use battery, a 60GB hard drive and all the basic other stuff. a dual core processor is definitely not necessary. so, what say you? specific model recommendations would help. I haven't bought a laptop in a long time and I don't know what's reliable anymore.

Installation Issues
Date: 09/03/06
Keywords: no keywords
Yesterday I spent a good portion of my day trying to download a program onto my new laptop. Every single time I would get a file to download, I'd try to install it and get the same error message everytime and the install would cancel. I decided to try on my PC, went out, came home to find the download finished, tried it out on my PC, and everything worked beautiful. So I loaded that sucker onto my 512 mb jump drive and transferred the files on to my laptop. I go to install it and I get the SAME error message that I've been getting all day.
Any help would be greatly appreciated because I'm ready to throw my damn laptop out the car window.

Tablet Trouble
Date: 09/01/06
Keywords: software
Hi there. I need some help with my Wacom tablet. I'm not too knowledgable with computers and things like this, but I'll try my best to give as much information about the problem as I can. A few days ago, I had to reformat the computer. But the tablet software appeared to still be loaded. So I plugged the tablet it and tested it out. It still worked, but not as it did before. When you lift the pen and place it on another area of the tablet, the curser is supposed to jump to that position on the screen. Now, it will hardly move at all when I do this. I figured I should probably reinstall the software, so I popped the disk in. It brought up a message telling me I needed to restart the computer before it could install. So I did, but it only continued to bring that same message up. I went in and deleted the program because I thought maybe that was the problem. I guess it wasn't since it only continued to bring that same message up. I'm not really sure what I should do. The tablet's not that old, haven't even had it a year. It's a Wacom, model CTE-440. Anyone have any advice?

Weird internet connection error.
Date: 08/29/06
Keywords: browser, web, yahoo
Riddle me this, Batman, because it certainly confuses me, and I can't seem to get my cable company's tech support to understand what I'm trying to tell them.
At times-- most recently last night, after a minor brownout-- I selectively lose cable connectivity. I say "selectively" because what I lose is almost* everything having to do with a web browser. Other apps-- multiplayer games, instant messaging services, file sharing programs, etc.-- all work fine, but if it requires a browser, it's toast. This is true with AOL's built-in browser, versions of IE from 5-7, and Firefox, running Windows98 and XP (Home and Pro).
* I can, occsionally, get part of a page to load-- e.g., I let a page load go for five and a half minutes and got the top text from www.yahoo.com, and a placeholder or two for images before it timed out.
The systems are connected to a Linksys cable router, with a Motorola Surfboard modem between it and the wall. The router and modem are obviously working correctly, because I'm getting throughput from everything but the browsers.
Anyone seen anything like this, and know how to fix it? I have power-cycled everything until I'm blue in the face, and I'm assuming that there's nothing wrong ont he cable company's end, since non-browser proggies are working.
TIA.

Computer fan broken
Date: 08/28/06
Keywords: no keywords
Arrgh, I'm sorry for all my posts here.
The computer's fan has been acting weird lately (for about the past few days). It'll spontaneously stop, and you have to smack the side of the computer to get it going again. This morning when I turned the computer on, the fan didn't come on, so I smacked the side. Nothing happened, so I smacked it again, and it came on, but it sort of went fast, slow, fast, slow, slower, stop. Repeated side-smacking isn't helping, so I'm assuming that we need to get our fan fixed ASAP. How would we go about doing that? We'll probably need to call a professional, as neither my mom nor I are proficient in fixing the inside of a computer.
(The processor temperature is now 83 degrees F, but it's gotten up to 101 without any problems [on hot days mostly]. What is the max temperature that a processor can get to without breaking completely? And no, I'm not about to test those limits; I'm getting off of here as soon as this is posted and am going to turn off the computer.)
EDIT: Okay, as an experiment, I turned the computer off and then on again, and again, the fan didn't come on, so I whapped the side, and it finally came on and stayed on (for now anyway...) I know I should still get it fixed, though...
