MS Word for XP
Date: 08/24/06
Keywords: software, ebay
Hi. Is there any way to possibly download a free version of MS Word for Windows XP instead of buying software off of ebay (I kinda can't afford it now)? Cuz my version on my laptop didn't include MS Word and I need it for school.
Thanks.

User accounts?
Date: 08/23/06
Keywords: no keywords
Hi there,
I just got a new computer in April, it's a VAIO Intel Pentium D Processor running with Windows XP, only I think I got a lemon or something because it has been giving me problems since the beginning.
For example, I'll be in the middle of something, and it'll restart, just like that. At first I thought it the power cable that was wiggling or something, but then I tried wiggling it really violently when it was fine.
Also, I'm always getting these random system messages, like "*So and so application* has encountered a problem and has to close," and this can be with any application, but I get at least five messages like that every time I'm on the computer. My Netscape and Internet Explorer always quit unexpectedly which is, you can probably imagine, extremely annoying.
So I thought maybe I should just start over, save all my files and create a new user. But then I went into the control panel, and when I click User Accounts, I get a message that says "Invalid Argument." I pressed okay, and I'm in User Accounts, except where it says "pick an account to change" no accounts show up underneath that, it's empty. When I press back, it says "Object Required."
I know that this, among everything else, is a recent problem because a couple of months ago I changed the password to another account on the computer. Does anyone know what this means or how to fix it? Because I'm going to need to make changes to my user account, it's completely unnacceptable.
Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you,
~Natalie

HP hell
Date: 08/23/06
Keywords: web
Hey y'all...need some help here.
My friend's computer crashed almost two weeks ago. I've got it right now and I'm trying to fix it, but it's an HP Pavilion (*eyeroll*) and it's got me completely flummoxed.
The deal is that when his computer ceased working, he ran HP System Recovery from the special partition, but that rendered his computer unbootable -- when he got to the part of the process at which it was "done" recovering and was ready to boot into Windows, it would simply freeze up. So I ended up having to transfer the hard drive into my computer to recover files, and then reformatting the hard drive and trying to reinstall Windoze. Here's the state of things, though: if I reinstall Windows from the recovery partition, I end up with a computer that won't boot because "the system is not fully installed". If I reinstall from a CD, I get a system that boots into Windows properly, but the graphics and sound don't work properly. But if I then try to recover drivers and such from the recovery partition through the "non-destructive" restore option, I get thrown right back to "the system is not fully installed".
So, my questions are:
(1) is there just some step I'm missing in the hard disk recovery that would get it working properly? Or is it really a waste of my time?
(2) if the recovery partition isn't going to work, should I kill it, or will deleting it screw up his computer?
(3) if I reinstall from a CD, what files do I need to download from the web to complete the installation, and where can I find them?
Hope somebody can help, because this has got me tearing my hair out...

Windows Movie Maker
Date: 08/23/06
Keywords: no keywords
Hi, I really hope someone can help me...
I'm a rabid fan-girl who does a lot of multimedia work. Five days ago I began working on my third music vid for my current fandom and having finished the vid (made in wmm on XP Home SP2) discovered I couldn't save the project as a movie file: initially it kept freezing everytime I asked it to save. Having shut down absolutely everything other than WMM, the next time I tried to save I got a low virtual memory warning. In response to this I increased the size of my paging file and to my relief, WMM began to render. However, WMM now consistently cuts off the end of the vid: by this I mean that when saving as a movie it tells me it's completed, yet of the 6 attempts I've made to save it the end product is exactly 2 mins 40 long when it should be 4 mins 36. I am completely and utterly stumped. Transferred the whole project onto a different PC and encountered exactly the same thing even though the project plays fine before I try to save it as a .wmv.
PLEASE, I am desperate. Any suggestions?? Many thanks in advance - a 2 day fun fest has turned into a five day nightmare!

Windows Media Player installation problem
Date: 08/22/06
Keywords: no keywords
I'm trying to upgrade Windows Media Player from version 10 to version 11. When I try to install it, I keep getting an error message that says I'm not using "genuine" Windows. This is not surprising, as our computer was built by a friend. Anyway, I think I also got a similar message when I installed v.10, but I got around it somehow, however, I can't remember how I did it. Anyone have any suggestions?
Either that, or can someone just point me to a link where I can download a codec to play .avi files? That's why I'm trying to upgrade in the first place...

When I reinstalled SP2, my Favorites list started doing that annoying thing where anything that hasn't been clicked on recently dissappears, and then I need to hit the arrows to see the whole thing. How do I turn this off? I didn't see anything in Internet Options..
Thanks so much. ^^

Why not to buy from Dell (or Sony!) anymore

https://www.dellbatteryprogram.com/
Apparently the recent reports of Dell's laptops catching fire and burning down people's houses and cars were actually true! Dell has initiated one of the tech industry's largest recalls in history, announcing that 4.1 million batteries sold with their laptops between 2004 and 2006 could pose a fire hazard and should be sent back.
So, you might want to check and make sure there aren't any Dangerous Dells nearby ;-)

Something happened to where my ActiveX Yellow bar doesn't show up anymore.. You know the yellow bar that pops up on the top and asks you to accept or click yes or whatever..? Here's an example: http://zwinky.smileycentral.com/download/index.jhtml?partner=ZJxdm025 Click the "Click Here" Button and it takes you to the issue I'm talking about. Anyhow, no matter how much I fudge witht he internet options, allowing pretty much everything, I can't make it work.. Could it be because of something else? Maybe an accidental uninstallation? Anything I can do to fix it?
It's driving me nuts!! :p Thanks for any help!

DVD question
Date: 08/14/06
Keywords: no keywords
For some reason, a used set of DVDs I purchased a while ago doesn't play well on my computer. Even though I bought them as used, there are no scratches on them that I can see and the whole set arrived in the original plastic packaging. With some of the disks, every few minutes, the player (not the whole computer) will freeze for about a minute, and then when it starts playing again the picture will be jumpy for a while. Some titles/chapters won't play at all. This happens on every player I've tried (Windows Media, WinDVD, Real Player, VLC Player). I tried a different DVD for a few minutes using the same players and it seemed to play okay, although I didn't play it the whole way through. Restarting didn't help. I tried the bad DVD on a different computer and it played fine.
Anyone know what would cause this?

DVD Drive Help...
Date: 08/10/06
Keywords: no keywords
I was watching a DVD on my computer and suddenly the program (WinDVD) froze. I had to force it to close and now for some reason as a result, my DVD drive has stopped recognizing any disc as being in the drive. It'll act as if the drive is empty, even when it's not. I tried various sorts of discs (DVDs, Music CDs, Data CDs, etc.) and my computer will tell me that the drive is empty. I already tried toubleshooting the drive and it says that the device is working properly and I tried a couple of the troubleshooting directions for the drive and none worked.
My computer is an HP Pavillion 752n desktop, with Windows XP. It has a 60GB Memory & is a 2.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor. I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but the name of the DVD-ROM is: HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8160B
Any advice?
Thanks.

any help?

I am in a real bind. I have an EMachine, and it was nearly brand new when I got i. A few days ago, I went to burn a few CD's and I realized Nero wasnt reading my CD drive. When I went into My Computer, my E Drive wasnt even showing up! After an entire day of System Restores, I finally got the drive to appear. But then all my programs were going haywire. Im pretty sure I had a bad copy of Nero, so I deleted it along with any of burning program I had downloaded, I figured I find a program once I got it all settled. WELL, now I have Nero and the other burning programs still sitting on my desktop, and in Program Files, and the computer will not let me delete them. My questions are A) How can I delete this effed up programs, B) Whats a good burning program, and C) If I need to reinstall Windows will all my mp3's be there after I reinstall?
Any help is appreciated.
Cheers

Digital signatures

Is there any way to add a digital signature to a Mac Word document? I came across some windows programs that claim to let you add a digital sig to word documents, but I can't find anything in the Mac Office documentation or just searching around online. Normally this is the sort of thing that I'd tinker around with on my computer, but I'm trying to figure this out for someone else and don't actually have a Mac in front of me to mess with.

Hard Drive
Date: 08/05/06
Keywords: no keywords
Here's a little back story: I have a Dell PC that my family about around 1999 or 2000. It came with Windows ME. So it came with I'd say about 20 gigs of space on the hard drive. About 2 years ago, we got cable internet which needed Windows XP. So we took Windows ME off and put XP on. Since we did that, it said about 75% of the space was taken up.
My dad decided to buy a new hard drive. We got an 80 gig drive (well, it says 75gig capacity) and swapped it with the other one. Right after we did that, it said about 20% of the space was taken I think.
But NOW? About 99% of the space is taken up. I have not put anything on this computer that should've taken up that much space. I thought that maybe it was the Sims 2, but even the Sims 2 could fit on the old hard drive. I uninstalled it and there is still less than 1 gig of space on here.
I was looking around some forums for help, and a person said to go into my C drive (which is the hard drive), select everything, and his alt+enter and look at the properties. It calculated how much space everything in that it was taken up, and it says 14.6 GB. But when I right click on the drive itself and look at the properties for the pie chart it has, it says 74.2 gb used, 264 mb unused.
So I'm SO confused on why the computer says that all the hard drive is taken up. Does anyone have ANY idea that could have happened? Or what could be taken up all that space? I'm sorry that this was so long, I'm just desperate for some help.

Internet Trouble

OK Here is the problem. I don't know what happened or why. I have tried everything I know to fix this problem. I am using a Linsys router that has 2 other pc's connected to it, which is also connected to a motorola cable modem. The other 2 pcs have internet so the problem is with my computer. The router shows that a connection is active with the ehternet cable, but everything on my pc says that there is no connection. Under network connections I have Local area connect, which I believe is the connection to the router,it says it is connected and ut has packets sent and recieved.under properties and support when I click repair it tries to go through the process but it comes up with trying to renew ip address, then that it can't get a connection to do so. Any suggestions would be helpful. If you need more info just let me know.
Thanks

Does anyone know of a way to convert .rmvb into .avi or .wmv? I need a program that doesnt watermark the video. I prefer freebie programs or a really great program that is worth dropping money on that does more than one thing. I've tried a few programs I've found on google search but they either water mark the video or cant convert from .rmvb.
Any help would be awesome.
Thank you in advance!!!

Won't let me type
Date: 08/04/06
Keywords: no keywords
Hey, my computer's "internal" speakers keep randomly beeping (they usually beep a ton and jam up if I lag and type too fast, but this is just weird since they randomly beep.) My computer will not allow me to type sometimes, just randomly make me stop, and I noticed the "Num Lock", "Caps Lock" and "Scroll Lock" little flashing things on my keyboard sometimes all flash on and off at the same time and stop. I open on-screen keyboard when it doesn't let me type and type a bit with that, then I try to use the keyboard again and it works. Thing is, this doesn't run so smoothly with AIM. I recently downloaded MySpaceIM (no, I am not a fanatical MySpace user, but my friend "can't" download AIM because of a "firewall" so I opted to communicate with her over that) but after all of these troubles I deleted all the files and the program. The problem persists. What is this? I am a writer so it's really annoying when I'm typing and I'm not allowed to anymore.
